It really bugged me that out of the Quins Itsuki was the first to be introduced, but ended up being the least prioritized out of all of them. (Still crying up about nino.)

Had he shown all five together at the very start he’s would have had to still introduce each one individually, leading to the same “first girl” scenario (since he needs to choose which girl gets properly introduced first).

Nino blowing a kiss to Futaro almost knocked me out. She was easily the cutest, had the best storyline and in my opinion, the best girl of the show. The fact that she didn’t win breaks me.
I still can’t get over nino not winning i was raging while reading the manga and i had hope that he might change his mind until the end but the whole show was ruined for me
Ichika DID actually meet him when they were younger. She met him when they were at their grandpas spa. They played cards together. He Just didn't believe her because of the stunts she pulled. Which then incited that scene of her bawling her eyes out because she was actually telling the truth. As an Ichika stan, the later chapters with her really pulled on my heart stings. I wanted her to win so badly in the beginning. But she just did so much shady shit. I still stand by her, but totally understood why she wasn't picked.
I personally liked Itsukis character and development. Not every quint needed to a love interest and I thought her and Futaro having a student-teacher like relationship was fine.
This is so true imo. If yotsuba just didnt have the plot to make her win. Itsuki would have been clearly the winner and then maybe ichika and then the rest. Idk but itsuki and ichika got great dynamics with futaro.
The ending felt like the author also forgot that character for the entire of the series and then remembered that she exists in the end and for compensation he gave her the win

The MC says that Yotsuba was his inspiration at his lowest point in life. We also saw in the show that MC decided to turn his life around, to be "someone who was needed," after he met one of the Quintuplets as a child. This my speculation, but I believe this low point he was referring to was when he was a kid and was being left behind by his friends. Having an energetic, interactive soul step into his life and unconditionally spend time with him would have had a significantly positive impact on his life. And it did, hence his desire to be helpful. The major and only problem with this is that when he explained to Yotsuba why he chose her, was he aware the Yotsuba was the girl he met? It could have been any of the five girls. Hell, he didn't even realize he was playing cards with Ichika after meeting Yotsuba. While I can recognize this as his low point, his reason for choosing her is insignificant as it could be applied to all five of the girls provided he doesn't know which met him as a child. Also, Miku has my vote.
I don’t think it matters whether she was the girl from Kyoto or not. He chose Yotsuba because she changed him a lot. She was always pushing him to get out there and live his life with no regrets. I really do wish they would have shown her more in the anime, because she definitely was great for him, and they just didn’t give them any moments for some stupid reason
I can't believe I finished season 1, season 2 and the manga in 1 whole day, what a rollercoaster of emotions and betrayal but despite the problems I have with the show, I had a great time being a miku stan till the end.

Sounds like the writer wasted her character arc just for the sake of the development of the other sisters. She was a decent character but the writer ruined her for the sake of melodrama. People should hate the writer for botching Ichika, not the character herself.
@@zemox2534 He really did botch both Itsuki and Ichika. Worst is that he actually pat himself on the back for the Ichika debacle, apparently proud of the entire “Ichika becomes selfish” conflict. Without realizing it went entirely against her characterization at the start. The only two characters he seemed to enjoy writing organically were Miku and Yotsuba, and he had to stop himself from writing more Miku scenes because she had begun to take over the role of main heroine... except he kept writing future arcs with Miku being recognized as the main girl to beat by both Nino and Ichika.
As an Itsuki fan, the manga left a really bitter taste. Throughout the whole series, the show always put Itsuki as the "center piece", the plot mover. She was the first girl, close friends with Raiha, she was being lead on as if she was Rena, and near the end, she was the only one who wasnt head over heels for Fuutarou. This gave so much potential to Itsuki's character to grow, in which they just said "sike, Yotsuba wins." Even in the selection scene, Itsuki starts talking as if she's the one who got chosen. Ofcourse, Itsuki fans got blue balled again. Also, the reasons Fuutarou gave for Yotsuba could easily be said about all the other quints. And Season 1 Yotsuba is nearly identical to ending Yotsuba, while all the other quints changed drastically. The author already said that he had Yotsuba planned to be the winner from the start because she was Rena and the first to support Fuutarou, but that doesnt mean you can just ignore her character development for the rest of the story. It kinda takes a piss on all the other character's development. Not to mention, the School Festival arc was kinda lame
Yotsuba changed a lot in the series. Just because she still felt hella guilty in the end doesn’t mean she didn’t get hella development. The lengths that woman would go through to self-sacrifice. And the final development of “you can be happy, your sister’s won’t hate you for choosing happiness” was magnificent. A classic trope. But Itsuki def was more a plot device. I thought her main point was to trick us into thinking she was going to win the entire series. But I held firm to my belief that Yotsuba was gonna win from Chaoter like 40

Yotsuba felt so random of a choice... Nino and Miku were the best possible endings as they were developed so well. Still a top tier manga and anime. Just slightly disappointing.
Nino had nice development but Miku had the most time cooking and needed a proper conclusion and it would’ve been good if Fuutarou learned to move on from the past and let go of “Rena” and realize that Miku truly loved him but that’s because I have a bais

The 5th quarter of the manga chapters petrified my heart. When Itsuki realized her feelings too late, and then seeing that "Friends Forever" picture, my heart shattered.
The manga did Itsuki dirty by giving her that arch AFTER Fuutarou chose someone else. It felt like a douche move for her to do such a thing when things have already been decided. The author should have made that arc way earlier so at least Itsuki is still somewhat in the competition.

Technically, Ichika did meet Fuutarou when they we're young. When they we're in that place in where they played cards he met Ichika. So Fuutarou met two girls. Yotsuba in that shrine and then Ichika at that place.

I literally would have been happy with the ending if Futaro ended up with any of the other 4 XD Yotsuba x Futaro just simply didn't get the screen time/panels to have their relationships developed like all of the others did. It made for a bitter pill to swallow especially after the author put an emphasis on letting go of the past. This series deserves a visual novel treatment.
QQ was my first and last harem anime/manga, when even one as good as this one can end badly, really turns me off from getting into any others. You basically hit the nail on the head with the problems with the ending between the reasons for picking yotsuba could be used for several of the other quints or the fact that she lacked moments compared to the others including Itsuki whom we see never actually had a chance. I guess that's another thing, at the end you know Itsuki and Ichika have no chance, so you just have it between the 2 best girls(Miku and Nino) who are also by a huge margin the most popular girls vs. Yotsuba and then are given the most heartbreaking Miku and Nino faces on top of the terrible reasoning for why Yotsuba wins and it just feels both poorly executed and depressing. I've seen some people say that Neji admitted to using Itsuki as a plot device, along with favoring Miku and Yotsuba, and that kind of makes it worse as the sheer volume of Miku moments exploded her popularity way beyond the other quints. Neji really could have given more moments to Yotsuba. We see with Nino that great moments can really get people behind a quint that was at first unlikeable. Imagine what it could have done for Yotsuba that really didn't have any hate. I could go on, but not really a point unless the anime has an anime original ending.
As soon as Itsuki was introduced until the end, I just assumed her role in the story was to be the red herring. She was always positioned slightly above the other sisters. It felt like she was going to be the obvious one the MC ends up with. BUT... because the story begins with the wedding, I just knew it was never going to be her from the start. She is the red herring quint.

I was rooting for Miku/Nino because they had the most development and the strongest feelings. But Yotsuba? Whaaaat? It was a surprise that Fuutaro chose her. She didn't have much development like the other two. I had mixed feelings for the end too. One girl is happy, the other four are sad and still love Fuutaro even after five years during the marriage ceremony. We need multiple endings for each girl.

What's funny about that ending is the fact that Itsuki flatout tells Yotsuba to tell Futaro it was her he met all those years ago, kinda killing the point of the mystery.
WARNING: THE FOLLOWING COMMENT CONTAINS SPOILERS FOR NON MANGA FANS. . According to me most people are unable to understand why Fuutarou chose Yotsuba. The entire story can be taken into 2 parts the side of the quints and fuutarou's side. When Fuutarou entered their lives all of them experienced some kind of change but out of those 5 the one who made the biggest change in Fuutarou's life was Yotsuba. We need to stop looking at it from the perspective of a third person and look at it from the Fuutarou's perspective. If it wasnt for Yotsuba he probably would have given up at the beginning. She pushed him into becomming the class rep which made him have a different opinion on school life. In chapter 86 he thanks rena saying if he hadnt met her he probably would have been alone his entire life, even though he didnt know who rena was among the quints he knew that Yotsuba was the catalyst that has been causing all these changes in his life. Miku and Nino have the best arcs because by meeting Fuutarou they discovered themselves and thats why they fell in love with him but if you reverse the perspective Miku and Nino did make Fuutarou a more sensitive person but didnt cause the way of change Yotsuba did. I do understand that Yotsuba herself didnt change the way everyone else did but she didnt have to , she pushed fuutaro out of his comfort zone and showed him what more to life there is and for that he was thankful. During his confession he said that it is his selfish wish that yotsuba stood besides him as without her he would have collapsed long ago. Yeah so that was what i took from the story, I could be wrong so feel free to correct me. I was team miku btw.
Finally someone thjnks about it from futaros perspective lol nino is my favorite in the show but if I had to choose one of them to be w in real life I'd choose yotsuba EVERY time because she's fun positive gets me out of my comfort zone, keeps me going, selfless , and I can be playful w her and act like a child w her, and she's like a supportive best friend ,,, would I be flattered cause the other girls like me and confess to me of course but its usually the supportive friend that doesn't show romantic feelings that you end up falling for and yotsuba was all that 💖
Bro they are just salty and biased. Because it broke the law of the harem animes' ending norm. The one who one was most unanticipated won the race. It is literally impossible for a type of Yotsuba to win in harem animes. So fans just got slapped in the cheek for it being unique and give the actual best waifu win, getting out of the norms. Yotsuba is literally best wife material. Fans are so used to get the generic girls to win. The only thing I was sad about I would want more to see the time within that 5 years pass and the honeymoon later on, so that other fans could also cooled down and like Yotsuba more.

Why not show all of that development to the audience instead of sidelining that character for almost the entirety of the story. SPOILER RANT I Honestly like how itsuki doeesn't get a confession scene or even much of any shows of affection towards fuutaro . She simply doesn't like him as much as the others which is a pretty normal thing in life . At the start of the show i thought that itsuki would be the one who ends up with fuutaro despite vastly preffering miku simply because of harem anime tropes as basically the first one to be introduced which made this a fresh change of pace. Itsuki is my second favorite quint behind Miku. Seeing her develop into a independent woman and learning to become her own person rather than trying to be the mother figure amongst the quints was nice
My problem with it was that, it was never a mystery. the winner was the childhood friend that helped him change. The author could've change it to him knowing and playing with the 5 girls thinking they were just one. That would be an actual mystery who he chooses. But nope, he just said @he is gonna marry Yotsuba, but Im giving him time with the other girls to make the story as long as possible@

Actually they did specifically show the "You helped me out of a hard time" event in the anime, it was a flashback memory of him & Yotsuba talking to each other at the shrine as children. The advice she gave him turned him from miscreant upstart to academic MVP, she quite literally saved him from himself...
When I read the manga, I honestly didn’t care who won. I loved each of them respectively that I would’ve been happy with whoever was the winner. Nino is great, Ichika(she apologized. I still love her. I love her chill personality) is great, Miku is great, Itsuki is great, and Yotsuba is great. They’re all great with their own respective traits. Even after Ichika ruined Mikus confession, she learned that playing dirty and being a slimy lying snake doesn’t always work, as she got shit on by Fuutarou. She decided to help with Miku’s confession as a means of saying sorry, as well as legitimately saying sorry to Miku. I still loved her even after what she did. Even though the ending was super lackluster, I was super happy for Yotsuba. Even though she had some of the biggest plot armor I have ever seen in any manga or anime, I was still happy for her. But it was because she had the most positive impact on Fuutarou’s life. She constantly supported him throughout his time tutoring the quints. She’s the reason he became the super mega loner nerd he is. She was fun, energetic, hardworking, optimistic, but most importantly for me, she’s understanding. If it wasn’t for her, Fuutarou prolly would have given up on the quints. But since Yotsuba was always there to support him, he was able to push through and help the quints graduate. Love is most often found within those who’ve made the most positive impact on ones life. If I was Fuutarou, I prolly would have done the same. When I’m reading manga or watching anime, my enjoyment always comes first. If I’m able to enjoy an anime or manga, it’s served it’s purpose. Was Quintessential Quintuplets good? Very. Did I enjoy it? Much so. Did it have its problems? Most definitely so. But just because a show has its problems, doesn’t mean it’s bad.
Ever since the manga was done there was a little conflict in people's hearts about the ending. As a Futaro x Miku stan I was quite bitter with the ending and hoped to have a "We Never Learn" multiple endings 😭😭😭. That wouldve been so good... but as well I kinda appreciate the ending in the manga cuz Yotsuba's case is that no one really notices her. And you said "oh I didn't even realize she's here" in the anime. Which I think is what the vibe of the animators and writer was going for. Shes essentially supposed to be a rick roll when you least expect it. Since we all expected that Itsuki is "main girl" and will probably win. In the end we get to have the ending of a 2nd rate middle child who gets little screen time due to the fact they are hiding the chances of fuutarou being with her. I really like Yotsuba but I dont think anyone expected her to win. 😅😅😅 which is honestly funny to me. Ive watched so much harem anime and theres always the main girl winning and I liked how refreshing it is that the girl who is most under represented, not main girl, but also not the most loved in the fandom (Miku and Nino) gets to win. Just the normal, awkward girl who wants her sisters to win rather than herself. Yotsuba is the epitomy of generousity and I believe that her development comes from needing to be more selfish with her sisters. But not to the point of Ichika's selfishness. A selfishness that's pure and kind that she can still have hope that someone like Futarou will notice her among the other girls. She is after all the first to become selfish out of all of them, starting by wearing a ribbon and changing her hair. She wanted to be more individualistic and the others strayed away like she did. Yotsuba is generous but shes also the most selfish character in the whole series. Which is kinda ironic. A lot of people say she won because she's fuutarous first love but I believe Yotsuba is still great without the first love arc because she's the girl who cried "notice me senpai". 😝👍 thanks for listening to my TED talk. let's be honest here out of all five of them none of them are really selfish, yotsuba might be the least one since throughout the final chapters she literally tried to avoid and let the sisters hang out with him instead. She cared so much about him as she is with her sisters and even so she can't deny her feelings for him, Yotsuba was one of the character who cared for Uesugi the most since the beginning, who stuck by his side no matter what, though i respect your opinion but i gotta let you know the ending was fine-written and made sense

The author wanted to change the ending in the Anime. Which if he still does want to do that it will be Nino or Miku who will be the bride. So we still have hope!

@@Rhaasen I am biased towards the manga. I think that the anime is underbudgeted and often looks off for me, but my friend thinks it looks great. :shrug:. If I try to be unbiased I can only say that manga is really good and fun to read.
I'm not even going to go into full detail about how Yotusba definitely deserved to win. Just go to r/5toubun and look up the dozens of essays explaining how Yotsuba was the sister that stood alongside Futaro throughout the entire series, from beginning to end. As to what was Futaro's lowest point? Basically the entire story, he had to find himself, and the one who helped him achieve that was Yotsuba. The girl who supported him the most and not the other way around.
There should have been an ending where at the mariage, the other sisters came one by one in the church with a wedding outfit and there all like « why are you here, i’m the one whose suppose to marry him » and then Futaro tries to run away but the quintuplets try to run after him and it ends there to give every fan the time they need to imagine their perfect ending
That would be lazy and boring. you've seen it a hundred times. While logically not everyone will be happy with the ending no matter who wins, it's definitely better to have a clear ending. People will be happy for Yotzuba and at the same time mourn for the others who didn't win. But unfortunately that is the nature of love and relationships and accepting that and also understanding how painful it can be is shown extremely well in this series

About Yotsuba, I think we have gotten the bad habit, after watching that much anime, of just not acknowledging moments if they are not presented in slow motion and a lot of glitter around. Yotsuba always helped Fuutaro. Of course, the others also did sometimes, but (apart from Itsuki) they were a lot more focused on winning his love. By the other hand, with small gestures, Yotsuba could make Fuutaro to enjoy his school life, to get recognized by his classmates, to participate in activities and to make friends (not to talk about how it was thanks to her he could afford her sisters). Big shiny moments? Not as much. A lot, constant and cotidiane moments? Yes.

Yeah. People also forget she was the one who was routing for Miku at first and tried to help her but Miku was too much of a coward. Ichika is also the only one who's never given Fuutaro a hard time. From the get go she was supportive of him before even knowing he was their Tutor.
I wish we could start a petition. One where Negi Harua is supposed to split Volume 14 into two volumes and take its time like the volumes before it did. So that everything doesn't feel rushed. That would be my dream. Alternativ maybe another bonus manga. With what if stories. 🤔

Yotsuba was comic relief for the whole series and never wanted nothing to do with Futaro that boat scene, but all of a sudden when the story is nearing the end she decided “ok I’ll confess my feelings” She’s like that one NBA player that’s benched throughout the whole game and the team is winning and getting glory and the last 5 minutes she tags in and acts like she was the MVP this whole time

Yeah the anime did her a little dirty. For example when they said she was the girl futaro knew (rena), it's a big thing in the manga. Followed up by all the reasons why she can't or doesn't wanna tell futaro they know each other. (Low self esteem, depression, not finding worth in living) while in the anime it's more like "oh hey me and futaro knew each other but i'm not gonna tell him cuz i'm selfish and stupid." I am on team Yotsuba and Ichika (tho the other girls were really likeable as well so i respect anyone's opinion.) But i do know that she doesn't get that much screentime and is more written off as a side charcter for a big part of the series. I already knew who was gonna win before i read and watched, so i began paying more attention to HER from the very beginning. Know I’m late but personally I think Yotsuba being picked still made sense. Romantic love isnt given to someone just because they had the most character development, it’s given to someone who had the most positive impact in their life. From day 1 Yotsuba has always supported Fuutaro. Realistically speaking I believe given the kindness,understanding, energetic, and helpful nature that Yotsuba has + how she is consistently like that from beginning to end with everybody she met, in Fuutarou shoes you’d love her. You can even see the impact she made on Fuutaro, a completely distant loner to helpful class president(again nominated by Yotsuba) with a couple of supportive guy friends. It’s clear she had the most impact on him when you acknowledge his personality and actions, so ofc he’d love her the most
Exactly like people get mad because she didn't get as much development but that has nothing to do with the mc's choice. Not only was she the one who suported him the most, she also put all her sisters's feelings above her owns until the moment he made his choice, helping all of then in one way or another with their relationship with fuutarou, like hiding the fact she was the one he met back in Kyoto not to make the others have less of a chance. She is a really great person and really does deserve being chosen
The only problem is that we never see them fall in love. Like I know they knew eac hother as kids and liked each other but that dosn't mean true love and marriage. We were never shown Fuutarou in love or falling in love with Yotsuba. It really didn't make sense
I just finished the manga.. I’m team Nino, but I’m going to be flat out honest with y’all right now: The ending lacked deliverance and it felt, as an excited audience participant, received a vexing outcome. Season 2 is easily the best no doubt, but I feel like once the movie airs and as people start watching it, the ratings will go down a smidge along with some backlash review. I’m not mad about who won (Yotsuba), however, seeing Fuutarou wake up after all that, the unsatisfactory led to cringeworthy disclosure. Let me know what you think 🙃
Finished reading the whole thing a second time this morning. If you look up the phrase "did him/her dirty", Nino's Pic would be right next to it as example A. She had the most complete character development arc of any (miku being a strong second) but is the only one not get any sort of meaningful resolution or closure. Her moment in the final "quintuplet game" is still an emotional sledgehammer blow to the balls.

SPOILER WARNING REGARDING THE BRIDE Yotsuba is the most dynamic character in the series: From TV Tropes - Yotsuba began as a child with little self-worth who yet had big dreams, but later became obsessed with being the most special of her sisters after Ichika was mistaken for her by Fuutarou. As a result, she became increasingly selfish, prideful, arrogant, and spiteful towards her sisters throughout the years. But after her sisters refused to let her transfer alone after Yotsuba's terrible grades got her expelled from their school, she discarded her surperiority complex and began living for her sisters. In the beginning of the series, she has reverted back to her cheerful personality, though she has become self-sacrificial to a fault, has severely low self-esteem, and suffers from guilt and emotional pain, which she hides behind a facade that is sometimes prone to crack. You explained yotsuba perfectly. I just watched this show, i was so excited for the ending since it was not spoiled for me, but the ending... I mean in the movie, right? Each of the girls had their final moments in the festival, i think only itsuki didnt kiss him. I just dont know why he chose yotsuba over Miku, Nina or Itsuki. I guess Nina was really annoying in the first season, so maybe thats why she got rejected, still though she was being the one who had done the most progress overall. Though her love for him was developed wayy too quick, its almost as if it was fake. Itsuki was not really sure about her feelings, and she mainly focused on being independant from the sisters and from Futaro. And that she was dressed up as Reina and stuff, and she got the closest to his family. I genuinely thought Miku would be chosen at the end, because she was as supportive to the mc as Yotsuba was, and also she failed to confess her feelings so many times, she deserved a reward, she was also the one that had feelings for him from the start and ended up loving him the most, so I thought it would be obvious that it would be down to Miku and Itsuki. But at the end of the movie it was explained that they throughout all these years (Futaro and Yotsuba) they changed drastically because they made a promise to each other, they made a promise to study harder and help their families. It was kind of explained at the end why they ended up together. One issue though, did Futaro know that, that was Yotsuba that he met in Kyoto? This is the most important question in the series in my opinion, if no then the ending makes no sense, but if yes then i guess it would make sense that he chose her, since he also changed for her. Also in the gallery when they were shopping (Itsuki, Yotsuba, Futaro and his sister), Futaro told Yotsuba that he met an important girl 5 years ago, she seemed that she was actually intrested in who that girl was, she didnt forget the fact that it was her (The scene where Itsuki asks why she wont confess that it was her at the end of some nearly last episode in season two). So it was the only time that she could actually tell a good lie? How did she manage to do it so perfectly? That is a little question, still kind of confusing. But still the biggesr question is if he actually knew that he met Yotsuba that day in Kyoto.
idk if anyone will still see this comment, but for me I was kinda sad that Itsuki didn't rlly get her moments bc I think shes overall the best character out of the 5... tho I do think she got her confession and was even the first one... kinda... I am not sure if that is a real thing tho but I heard it a couple times now that a way of saying 'I love u' is sometime portrait when someone states how beautiful the moon is tonight and Itsuki did that in that one scene (I think s2 e3) and she said the two times, the first time more casually but the second time it stood out bc she repeated it... as I said idk if that's a thing but I would have been happy if it was Itsuki
What I've notice from negi, is that hes writing is really let's says "english teacher analysis writing" if you just see the picture (read without paying attention) youtsuba winning is random, but if we start analysis like negi intended, youtsuba was to one who change him, twice. Futaro without noticing she was the closest to her, she was the only one who he got physical with and had fun with without changing how they act. They left a lot to be desire for her but at the same time it was inevitable. Youtsuba story is of guilt and is trying to get futaro to hit up with any other but her, constantly trying to help her sister and putting herself down. So having moments with him wouldn't make any sense with her character. What should have happen is after the confession we see moments together, have her own "redemption arc" where she can let go of the past guilt and be happy. Yotsuba was the only real option for the winner but the execution In the last quarter of the manga wasn't there
The more I see people rationalize it the more I keep thinking “sure, that is all good but maybe WRITE THIS INTO THE STORY CLEARLY”. And if you completely fail to stick the landing then her story failed. If we only got as far as “guilt-ridden guilt can’t find happiness” then it failed. Not to mention, the very fact Yotsuba was conceptually created as Fuutarou’s “Princess in distress” whose happiness revolves around her being selfish enough to monopolize him kind of cheapens her. It’s like she was written just for him, while the rest of them are clearly shown to grow stronger and independent.

At this point its so hard just deciding on one. I just finished watching the anime and my god did i love it… up until the end. I as well had the ending ruined for me and i wasn’t mad at all(I’m lying that shit had me furious). With that in mind Im not gonna shit on yotsuba, due to the fact that there is another season coming so they can easily do to her what they did to nino. I never would have thought that nino would be my favorite ever but here we are, i love her and at this point in time the only real options that would make sense and leave you somewhat satisfied would be nino or miku. Thats why character development is important, look how quickly you can like a once unlikable character. The premise of yotsuba being the one who gets chosen just because she just so happened to be the one who was with the MC when they were kids is just not good enough of a reason. Ichika was also with him at that time for some period and he probably wont ever know that. Again, if your going to pick yotsuba as the winner, then maybe you shouldn’t have her literally be the one with the least amount of screen time/character development, and yes I’m aware that itsuki didn’t really have any involvement either but that makes sense if she isn’t the winner. Thats why everyones mad and/or think it should of been another quin. Lets just hope season three does her justice. Yotsuba is a nice girl, but she is forgettable and the entire story between them is offscreen. Plus his choosing her makes you scratch your head because if the stated reason he claims. He claims she helped him, but guess what we know for a fact the others have helped him just as much. It was so obvious Negi had totally given up on the manga and was just winging it by this point (others point out that he had also begun getting sloppy in drawing it too).
Yotsuba was: first one to accept MC as a tutor, also first one to confess (lap pillow was cute af don't lie) even though she says it was a "lie". Also, this is just my take, but Yotsuba is the most suitable sister to help MC take care of the other 4 for the rest of their lives.
Her character is the least interesting and the least developed it kinds remind me of the SpongeBob ones. This ending is like game of thrones season 8 ending it doesn't make sense because till the end of the manga yotsuba doesn't exist or she doesn't do anything great.

From what I remember, Yotsuba was the only one helping Fuutarou with his actual responsibilities (she was his partner as class-rep and helped him set up the festival and before that she helped get the other sisters to trust him so he could do his job as a tutor) while the other sisters (except Itsuki) were just mindlessly chasing Fuutarou for themselves.

And still the others have a lot more time with fuutaro than her. For example Nino even in the first season saved fuutaro's job ,yotsuba couldn't even think of a solution. Yotsuba could be the perfect girl for him but only if the author gave her a proper character development. Ichika DID actually meet him when they were younger. She met him when they were at their grandpas spa. They played cards together. He Just didn't believe her because of the stunts she pulled. Which then incited that scene of her bawling her eyes out because she was actually telling the truth. As an Ichika stan, the later chapters with her really pulled on my heart stings. I wanted her to win so badly in the beginning. But she just did so much shady shit. I still stand by her, but totally understood why she wasn't picked.

The MC says that Yotsuba was his inspiration at his lowest point in life. We also saw in the show that MC decided to turn his life around, to be "someone who was needed," after he met one of the Quintuplets as a child. This my speculation, but I believe this low point he was referring to was when he was a kid and was being left behind by his friends. Having an energetic, interactive soul step into his life and unconditionally spend time with him would have had a significantly positive impact on his life. And it did, hence his desire to be helpful.
The major and only problem with this is that when he explained to Yotsuba why he chose her, was he aware the Yotsuba was the girl he met? It could have been any of the five girls. Hell, he didn't even realize he was playing cards with Ichika after meeting Yotsuba. While I can recognize this as his low point, his reason for choosing her is insignificant as it could be applied to all five of the girls provided he doesn't know which met him as a child.

I really do wish they would have shown her more in the anime, because she definitely was great for him, and they just didn’t give them any moments for some stupid reason

@@zemox2534 He really did botch both Itsuki and Ichika. Worst is that he actually pat himself on the back for the Ichika debacle, apparently proud of the entire “Ichika becomes selfish” conflict. Without realizing it went entirely against her characterization at the start.
The only two characters he seemed to enjoy writing organically were Miku and Yotsuba, and he had to stop himself from writing more Miku scenes because she had begun to take over the role of main heroine... except he kept writing future arcs with Miku being recognized as the main girl to beat by both Nino and Ichika.

As an Itsuki fan, the manga left a really bitter taste.
Throughout the whole series, the show always put Itsuki as the "center piece", the plot mover. She was the first girl, close friends with Raiha, she was being lead on as if she was Rena, and near the end, she was the only one who wasnt head over heels for Fuutarou. This gave so much potential to Itsuki's character to grow, in which they just said "sike, Yotsuba wins." Even in the selection scene, Itsuki starts talking as if she's the one who got chosen. Ofcourse, Itsuki fans got blue balled again.
Also, the reasons Fuutarou gave for Yotsuba could easily be said about all the other quints. And Season 1 Yotsuba is nearly identical to ending Yotsuba, while all the other quints changed drastically. The author already said that he had Yotsuba planned to be the winner from the start because she was Rena and the first to support Fuutarou, but that doesnt mean you can just ignore her character development for the rest of the story. It kinda takes a piss on all the other character's development.
Not to mention, the School Festival arc was kinda lame

Yotsuba changed a lot in the series. Just because she still felt hella guilty in the end doesn’t mean she didn’t get hella development. The lengths that woman would go through to self-sacrifice. And the final development of “you can be happy, your sister’s won’t hate you for choosing happiness” was magnificent. A classic trope.
But Itsuki def was more a plot device. I thought her main point was to trick us into thinking she was going to win the entire series. But I held firm to my belief that Yotsuba was gonna win from Chaoter like 40

The manga did Itsuki dirty by giving her that arch AFTER Fuutarou chose someone else. It felt like a douche move for her to do such a thing when things have already been decided. The author should have made that arc way earlier so at least Itsuki is still somewhat in the competition.

Yotsuba x Futaro just simply didn't get the screen time/panels to have their relationships developed like all of the others did. It made for a bitter pill to swallow especially after the author put an emphasis on letting go of the past.
This series deserves a visual novel treatment.
Ichika was the girl back then, at least she was the one that played cards with him.
Yotsuba was the girl who spent all day with him and Ichika was the one who played cards with him before he went back to school
QQ was my first and last harem anime/manga, when even one as good as this one can end badly, really turns me off from getting into any others.
You basically hit the nail on the head with the problems with the ending between the reasons for picking yotsuba could be used for several of the other quints or the fact that she lacked moments compared to the others including Itsuki whom we see never actually had a chance.
I guess that's another thing, at the end you know Itsuki and Ichika have no chance, so you just have it between the 2 best girls(Miku and Nino) who are also by a huge margin the most popular girls vs. Yotsuba and then are given the most heartbreaking Miku and Nino faces on top of the terrible reasoning for why Yotsuba wins and it just feels both poorly executed and depressing.
I've seen some people say that Neji admitted to using Itsuki as a plot device, along with favoring Miku and Yotsuba, and that kind of makes it worse as the sheer volume of Miku moments exploded her popularity way beyond the other quints. Neji really could have given more moments to Yotsuba. We see with Nino that great moments can really get people behind a quint that was at first unlikeable. Imagine what it could have done for Yotsuba that really didn't have any hate. I could go on, but not really a point unless the anime has an anime original ending.

As soon as Itsuki was introduced until the end, I just assumed her role in the story was to be the red herring. She was always positioned slightly above the other sisters. It felt like she was going to be the obvious one the MC ends up with. BUT... because the story begins with the wedding, I just knew it was never going to be her from the start. I was rooting for Miku/Nino because they had the most development and the strongest feelings. But Yotsuba? Whaaaat? It was a surprise that Fuutaro chose her. She didn't have much development like the other two. I had mixed feelings for the end too. One girl is happy, the other four are sad and still love Fuutaro even after five years during the marriage ceremony. We need multiple endings for each girl.

According to me most people are unable to understand why Fuutarou chose Yotsuba. The entire story can be taken into 2 parts the side of the quints and fuutarou's side. When Fuutarou entered their lives all of them experienced some kind of change but out of those 5 the one who made the biggest change in Fuutarou's life was Yotsuba. We need to stop looking at it from the perspective of a third person and look at it from the Fuutarou's perspective. If it wasnt for Yotsuba he probably would have given up at the beginning. She pushed him into becomming the class rep which made him have a different opinion on school life. In chapter 86 he thanks rena saying if he hadnt met her he probably would have been alone his entire life, even though he didnt know who rena was among the quints he knew that Yotsuba was the catalyst that has been causing all these changes in his life. Miku and Nino have the best arcs because by meeting Fuutarou they discovered themselves and thats why they fell in love with him but if you reverse the perspective Miku and Nino did make Fuutarou a more sensitive person but didnt cause the way of change Yotsuba did. I do understand that Yotsuba herself didnt change the way everyone else did but she didnt have to , she pushed fuutaro out of his comfort zone and showed him what more to life there is and for that he was thankful. During his confession he said that it is his selfish wish that yotsuba stood besides him as without her he would have collapsed long ago.

It is literally impossible for a type of Yotsuba to win in harem animes. So fans just got slapped in the cheek for it being unique and give the actual best waifu win, getting out of the norms. Why not show all of that development to the audience instead of sidelining that character for almost the entirety of the story. I Honestly like how itsuki doeesn't get a confession scene or even much of any shows of affection towards fuutaro .
She simply doesn't like him as much as the others which is a pretty normal thing in life .
At the start of the show i thought that itsuki would be the one who ends up with fuutaro despite vastly preffering miku simply because of harem anime tropes as basically the first one to be introduced which made this a fresh change of pace.
Anyway great video.
Itsuki is my second favorite quint behind Miku. Seeing her develop into a independent woman and learning to become her own person rather than trying to be the mother figure amongst the quints was nice

Actually they did specifically show the "You helped me out of a hard time" event in the anime, it was a flashback memory of him & Yotsuba talking to each other at the shrine as children. The advice she gave him turned him from miscreant upstart to academic MVP, she quite literally saved him from himself...
When I read the manga, I honestly didn’t care who won. I loved each of them respectively that I would’ve been happy with whoever was the winner. Nino is great, Ichika(she apologized. I still love her. I love her chill personality) is great, Miku is great, Itsuki is great, and Yotsuba is great. They’re all great with their own respective traits. Even after Ichika ruined Mikus confession, she learned that playing dirty and being a slimy lying snake doesn’t always work, as she got shit on by Fuutarou. She decided to help with Miku’s confession as a means of saying sorry, as well as legitimately saying sorry to Miku. I still loved her even after what she did. Even though the ending was super lackluster, I was super happy for Yotsuba. Even though she had some of the biggest plot armor I have ever seen in any manga or anime, I was still happy for her. But it was because she had the most positive impact on Fuutarou’s life. She constantly supported him throughout his time tutoring the quints. She’s the reason he became the super mega loner nerd he is. She was fun, energetic, hardworking, optimistic, but most importantly for me, she’s understanding. If it wasn’t for her, Fuutarou prolly would have given up on the quints. But since Yotsuba was always there to support him, he was able to push through and help the quints graduate. Love is most often found within those who’ve made the most positive impact on ones life. If I was Fuutarou, I prolly would have done the same. When I’m reading manga or watching anime, my enjoyment always comes first. If I’m able to enjoy an anime or manga, it’s served it’s purpose. Was Quintessential Quintuplets good? Very. Did I enjoy it? Much so. Did it have its problems? Most definitely so. But just because a show has its problems, doesn’t mean it’s bad.
Ever since the manga was done there was a little conflict in people's hearts about the ending. As a Futaro x Miku stan I was quite bitter with the ending and hoped to have a "We Never Learn" multiple endings 😭😭😭. That wouldve been so good... but as well I kinda appreciate the ending in the manga cuz Yotsuba's case is that no one really notices her. And you said "oh I didn't even realize she's here" in the anime. Which I think is what the vibe of the animators and writer was going for. Shes essentially supposed to be a rick roll when you least expect it. Since we all expected that Itsuki is "main girl" and will probably win. In the end we get to have the ending of a 2nd rate middle child who gets little screen time due to the fact they are hiding the chances of fuutarou being with her. I really like Yotsuba but I dont think anyone expected her to win. 😅😅😅 which is honestly funny to me. Ive watched so much harem anime and theres always the main girl winning and I liked how refreshing it is that the girl who is most under represented, not main girl, but also not the most loved in the fandom (Miku and Nino) gets to win. Just the normal, awkward girl who wants her sisters to win rather than herself. Yotsuba is the epitomy of generousity and I believe that her development comes from needing to be more selfish with her sisters. But not to the point of Ichika's selfishness. A selfishness that's pure and kind that she can still have hope that someone like Futarou will notice her among the other girls. She is after all the first to become selfish out of all of them, starting by wearing a ribbon and changing her hair. She wanted to be more individualistic and the others strayed away like she did. Yotsuba is generous but shes also the most selfish character in the whole series. Which is kinda ironic. A lot of people say she won because she's fuutarous first love but I believe Yotsuba is still great without the first love arc because she's the girl who cried "notice me senpai". 😝👍 thanks for listening to my TED talk.

let's be honest here out of all five of them none of them are really selfish, yotsuba might be the least one since throughout the final chapters she literally tried to avoid and let the sisters hang out with him instead. I'm not even going to go into full detail about how Yotusba definitely deserved to win. Just go to r/5toubun and look up the dozens of essays explaining how Yotsuba was the sister that stood alongside Futaro throughout the entire series, from beginning to end. As to what was Futaro's lowest point? Basically the entire story, he had to find himself, and the one who helped him achieve that was Yotsuba. The girl who supported him the most and not the other way around.
There should have been an ending where at the mariage, the other sisters came one by one in the church with a wedding outfit and there all like « why are you here, i’m the one whose suppose to marry him » and then Futaro tries to run away but the quintuplets try to run after him and it ends there to give every fan the time they need to imagine their perfect ending
That would be lazy and boring. you've seen it a hundred times. While logically not everyone will be happy with the ending no matter who wins, it's definitely better to have a clear ending. People will be happy for Yotzuba and at the same time mourn for the others who didn't win. But unfortunately that is the nature of love and relationships and accepting that and also understanding how painful it can be is shown extremely well in this series

About Yotsuba, I think we have gotten the bad habit, after watching that much anime, of just not acknowledging moments if they are not presented in slow motion and a lot of glitter around. Yotsuba always helped Fuutaro. Of course, the others also did sometimes, but (apart from Itsuki) they were a lot more focused on winning his love. By the other hand, with small gestures, Yotsuba could make Fuutaro to enjoy his school life, to get recognized by his classmates, to participate in activities and to make friends (not to talk about how it was thanks to her he could afford her sisters). Big shiny moments? Not as much. A lot, constant and cotidiane moments? Yes.

Yeah the anime did her a little dirty. For example when they said she was the girl futaro knew (rena), it's a big thing in the manga. Followed up by all the reasons why she can't or doesn't wanna tell futaro they know each other. (Low self esteem, depression, not finding worth in living) while in the anime it's more like "oh hey me and futaro knew each other but i'm not gonna tell him cuz i'm selfish and stupid." I am on team Yotsuba and Ichika (tho the other girls were really likeable as well so i respect anyone's opinion.) But i do know that she doesn't get that much screentime and is more written off as a side charcter for a big part of the series. I already knew who was gonna win before i read and watched, so i began paying more attention to HER from the very beginning. So i can understand why it comes out of the blue to the people who didn't know. She was a wasted opportunity and that's really sad, but nonetheless she was really likeable!!

Know I’m late but personally I think Yotsuba being picked still made sense. Romantic love isnt given to someone just because they had the most character development, it’s given to someone who had the most positive impact in their life. From day 1 Yotsuba has always supported Fuutaro. Realistically speaking I believe given the kindness,understanding, energetic, and helpful nature that Yotsuba has + how she is consistently like that from beginning to end with everybody she met, in Fuutarou shoes you’d love her. You can even see the impact she made on Fuutaro, a completely distant loner to helpful class president(again nominated by Yotsuba) with a couple of supportive guy friends. It’s clear she had the most impact on him when you acknowledge his personality and actions, so ofc he’d love her the most
Exactly like people get mad because she didn't get as much development but that has nothing to do with the mc's choice. Not only was she the one who suported him the most, she also put all her sisters's feelings above her owns until the moment he made his choice, helping all of then in one way or another with their relationship with fuutarou, like hiding the fact she was the one he met back in Kyoto not to make the others have less of a chance. She is a really great person and really does deserve being chosen
The only problem is that we never see them fall in love. Like I know they knew eac hother as kids and liked each other but that dosn't mean true love and marriage. We were never shown Fuutarou in love or falling in love with Yotsuba. It really didn't make sense

I just finished the manga.. I’m team Nino, but I’m going to be flat out honest with y’all right now: The ending lacked deliverance and it felt, as an excited audience participant, received a vexing outcome. Season 2 is easily the best no doubt, but I feel like once the movie airs and as people start watching it, the ratings will go down a smidge along with some backlash review. I’m not mad about who won (Yotsuba), however, seeing Fuutarou wake up after all that, the unsatisfactory led to cringeworthy disclosure. Let me know what you think 🙃

Finished reading the whole thing a second time this morning. If you look up the phrase "did him/her dirty", Nino's Pic would be right next to it as example A. She had the most complete character development arc of any (miku being a strong second) but is the only one not get any sort of meaningful resolution or closure. Her moment in the final "quintuplet game" is still an emotional sledgehammer blow to the balls.
I wish the author would do 5 routes for all the quintuplets so it’s fair for all of them like We Never Learn

Yotsuba is the most dynamic character in the series:

As a result, she became increasingly selfish, prideful, arrogant, and spiteful towards her sisters throughout the years. You explained yotsuba perfectly. I just watched this show, i was so excited for the ending since it was not spoiled for me, but the ending... I mean in the movie, right? Each of the girls had their final moments in the festival, i think only itsuki didnt kiss him. I just dont know why he chose yotsuba over Miku, Nina or Itsuki. I guess Nina was really annoying in the first season, so maybe thats why she got rejected, still though she was being the one who had done the most progress overall. Though her love for him was developed wayy too quick, its almost as if it was fake. Itsuki was not really sure about her feelings, and she mainly focused on being independant from the sisters and from Futaro. And that she was dressed up as Reina and stuff, and she got the closest to his family. I genuinely thought Miku would be chosen at the end, because she was as supportive to the mc as Yotsuba was, and also she failed to confess her feelings so many times, she deserved a reward, she was also the one that had feelings for him from the start and ended up loving him the most, so I thought it would be obvious that it would be down to Miku and Itsuki. But at the end of the movie it was explained that they throughout all these years (Futaro and Yotsuba) they changed drastically because they made a promise to each other, they made a promise to study harder and help their families. It was kind of explained at the end why they ended up together. One issue though, did Futaro know that, that was Yotsuba that he met in Kyoto? This is the most important question in the series in my opinion, if no then the ending makes no sense, but if yes then i guess it would make sense that he chose her, since he also changed for her. Also in the gallery when they were shopping (Itsuki, Yotsuba, Futaro and his sister), Futaro told Yotsuba that he met an important girl 5 years ago, she seemed that she was actually intrested in who that girl was, she didnt forget the fact that it was her (The scene where Itsuki asks why she wont confess that it was her at the end of some nearly last episode in season two). So it was the only time that she could actually tell a good lie? How did she manage to do it so perfectly? That is a little question, still kind of confusing. But still the biggesr question is if he actually knew that he met Yotsuba that day in Kyoto.
idk if anyone will still see this comment, but for me I was kinda sad that Itsuki didn't rlly get her moments bc I think shes overall the best character out of the 5... tho I do think she got her confession and was even the first one... kinda... I am not sure if that is a real thing tho but I heard it a couple times now that a way of saying 'I love u' is sometime portrait when someone states how beautiful the moon is tonight and Itsuki did that in that one scene (I think s2 e3) and she said the two times, the first time more casually but the second time it stood out bc she repeated it... as I said idk if that's a thing but I would have been happy if it was Itsuki

What I've notice from negi, is that hes writing is really let's says "english teacher analysis writing" if you just see the picture (read without paying attention) youtsuba winning is random, but if we start analysis like negi intended, youtsuba was to one who change him, twice. Futaro without noticing she was the closest to her, she was the only one who he got physical with and had fun with without changing how they act. They left a lot to be desire for her but at the same time it was inevitable. Youtsuba story is of guilt and is trying to get futaro to hit up with any other but her, constantly trying to help her sister and putting herself down. So having moments with him wouldn't make any sense with her character. What should have happen is after the confession we see moments together, have her own "redemption arc" where she can let go of the past guilt and be happy. Yotsuba was the only real option for the winner but the execution
In the last quarter of the manga wasn't there
The more I see people rationalize it the more I keep thinking “sure, that is all good but maybe WRITE THIS INTO THE STORY CLEARLY”. And if you completely fail to stick the landing then her story failed. If we only got as far as “guilt-ridden guilt can’t find happiness” then it failed.
Not to mention, the very fact Yotsuba was conceptually created as Fuutarou’s “Princess in distress” whose happiness revolves around her being selfish enough to monopolize him kind of cheapens her. It’s like she was written just for him, while the rest of them are clearly shown to grow stronger and independent.

2. If u would have noticed she always stands for any of her sister and futuro like thinking just about them .... She nvr thought about herself (like in an EP I don't remember where futuro asked her what she wants but she only cared about her sisters)
3.shes the one helping others to confess or to go through their luv for futuro although she herself loves him
4.yotsuba nvr treated others as her enemy like the other sisters
5.salute to the writer who has undergone such a beautiful story....pure love is what filled inside yotsuba for every character in the series ❤️

At this point its so hard just deciding on one. I just finished watching the anime and my god did i love it… up until the end. I as well had the ending ruined for me and i wasn’t mad at all(I’m lying that shit had me furious). With that in mind Im not gonna shit on yotsuba, due to the fact that there is another season coming so they can easily do to her what they did to nino. I never would have thought that nino would be my favorite ever but here we are, i love her and at this point in time the only real options that would make sense and leave you somewhat satisfied would be nino or miku. Thats why character development is important, look how quickly you can like a once unlikable character. The premise of yotsuba being the one who gets chosen just because she just so happened to be the one who was with the MC when they were kids is just not good enough of a reason. Ichika was also with him at that time for some period and he probably wont ever know that. Again, if your going to pick yotsuba as the winner, then maybe you shouldn’t have her literally be the one with the least amount of screen time/character development, and yes I’m aware that itsuki didn’t really have any involvement either but that makes sense if she isn’t the winner. Thats why everyones mad and/or think it should of been another quin. Lets just hope season three does her justice. Also yes I understand that yotsuba was always the uplifting and putting others as well as the MC first before herself type character, always trying her hardest when in fact all five of them were working there ass off, there just wasnt enough of that to say that she deserved to win. Right? Im trying not to be biased here. Now that i know how it ends, manga wise, i just need more, it feels rushed for a reason, WE NEED MORE!!!!!!!!
All in all in my personal opinion (now being biased) my heart just wants it to end in a harem lol… realistically speaking though I’m hoping for an anime original ending, cause this shit right here ain’t it. I don’t understand how someone “deserves” to be with someone else? Like you don’t just start loving someone because they’ve grown to be a better person. I totally understand how disappointing the ending is, but I feel like the Yotsuba choice made sense. If only we got to see more romance between the two, I’m sure less people would be upset :/

@@amelied9303 First, manga is not reality, they are only drawings. So, if a charcter that made a lot for the mc, or has shown a lot of love for him, it should be clear who people would chose. That´s because 5 toubun hanayome didn´t have a good ending, because it felt like it was a bit careless of a development of a love relationship.

Essentially I'm saying that my biggest critique of the manga is story progression (specifically at the end) rather than the content of the ending itself.

Yotsuba is a nice girl, but she is forgettable and the entire story between them is offscreen. Plus his choosing her makes you scratch your head because if the stated reason he claims. He claims she helped him, but guess what we know for a fact the others have helped him just as much. It was so obvious Negi had totally given up on the manga and was just winging it by this point (others point out that he had also begun getting sloppy in drawing it too).

Yotsuba was: first one to accept MC as a tutor, also first one to confess (lap pillow was cute af don't lie) even though she says it was a "lie". Also, this is just my take, but Yotsuba is the most suitable sister to help MC take care of the other 4 for the rest of their lives.
Her character is the least interesting and the least developed it kinds remind me of the SpongeBob ones. This ending is like game of thrones season 8 ending it doesn't make sense because till the end of the manga yotsuba doesn't exist or she doesn't do anything great.

From what I remember, Yotsuba was the only one helping Fuutarou with his actual responsibilities (she was his partner as class-rep and helped him set up the festival and before that she helped get the other sisters to trust him so he could do his job as a tutor) while the other sisters (except Itsuki) were just mindlessly chasing Fuutarou for themselves.

Yotsuba didnt convince any of her to help him he accomplished this by himself. Yotsuba knew him from the start if she didnt know him from the start she wouldn't be so nice with him its kind of unfair for the others. And still the others have a lot more time with fuutaro than her. For example Nino even in the first season saved fuutaro's job ,yotsuba couldn't even think of a solution. Yotsuba could be the perfect girl for him but only if the author gave her a proper character development. And btw Miku is the one that truly supported fuutaro and arguing with Nino from the start for the shake of him.
