So true. I look forward to these videos and they brighten my week. So much smart advice, so many great tips, plus an articulate, wonderful expert who delivers the material with verve and personality!
I've told my shag trauma story many times. Let's put it this way; if you have shag, I know you have never had shag before. As far as the TV problem I solved it by taking a 6 month break. May will be month 192. Best thing I ever did. What I can't stand; people who buy old houses and don't try to match the widows when they put in new windows. Like a Cape Cod with multi-pane windows replaced with a plain sheet of glass. It ruins the house. Now moving inside; vertical blinds. Ugly dust collectors are not window dressings.
I was color drenching in 1975. I had a red shag carpet, a red bean bag chair, a red lava lamp and a red lucite bong in my bedroom. I made my own red/orange window treatments out of the sheet set fabric, so they matched my bedding.
Garrett, I absolutely agree with your preference for the same flooring throughout contiguous spaces and also the difficulty it can be to achieve. From my black slate (very classic) floored foyer I can see medium tone oak floors left and right (living room and den) and an oatmeal color pergo floored kitchen ahead. This flooring is in excellent condition and runs through the half bath, laundry room, and mudroom right off the kitchen, and I appreciate that continuity. I would prefer that all of the visible floors surrounding the foyer be oak of the same color, but it would be both difficult and expensive to change. So what I did was place large matching oatmeal colored wool rugs in the living room and den. Now when I look ahead I see pale kitchen flooring and when I look left and right I also see pale flooring - beautiful wool rugs the same color as the kitchen floor with narrow borders of the underlying oak - much more cohesive. Black accents in all three rooms (living room, den, and kitchen) also pick up the black slate foyer floor. Sometimes we need some creativity!
I suppose they must crave it. I have lived by the sea all my life and can't imagine not being in sight of it. If they desire that beachside life - good for them.
I loved your comment about a house vs a home. We are planning a move from Florida to NC within a couple of years. I've been looking online at homes for sale in the area we want to move to, and I've also looked at homes when I've been in NC. I hate the empty and staged homes, because you really can't see how real people/families live in those homes. They're just so devoid of any personality and warmth. Seeing how these houses function as a home is as important to me as the actual structure.
I like shag rugs. I listen to you, I hear you.... But every time I need to buy a rug for my living room, I end up with slag. I look att others, I try too like other rugs but, I don't. Shag feels RIGHT!.
Maybe I’m mellowing in my old age, but I no longer worry about what other people do in their homes, as long as no pets or children are damaged in the process. Can someone whose first grown-up apartment back in the sixties involved an orange shag rug and diagonal paint stripes on the wall throw stones at anyone else? …But Lordie, I loved that rug.
Oof. I will never understand why anyone would paint a brick house. The point of brick is lower maintenance because you do not have to repaint it every so often. There are quite a few painted brick houses in my neighborhood (I think there was a phase where that was just "in" here) and it honestly breaks my heart. By the way, as Garrett said, if you do choose to paint a brick house, understand that it needs to be able to breathe, so you can't just buy regular outdoor paint for it.
I agree that televisions shouldn't be a focal point. Mine is positioned between the dining and living area on top of a low modern curio cabinet that holds my treasures, next to the fireplace which is the room's intended focal point and easy to see from all areas when viewing. When panning across the room the eyes pass by it without automatically stopping there and the black blends in with other black elements throughout the room. The point is, I agree that extra thought is required into incorporating it without having it distract from the design aesthetic. Positioned at eye level when seated and no larger than a modest 45". I think people get in trouble having giant sized monster tv's in their main / formal area. I went to someone's house recently where their tv was a behemoth leering at me from every angle. If Tv is takes that much of a center stage in someone's life, perhaps they should go occasionally take a walk or something. lol
I love that you are constantly reminding ppl our homes should be a refelection of what we love, and say who we are. Cant say that of my sewing room....or maybe i can. LOL. Bar stools tho are interesting - depending on your family type, you either love them or hate them. At 5'10", im the shortest in ALL the family, we all just plonk our bums on them, so much less energy to sit at, no "climbing up" onto them.
Thanks so much! That’s my belief. Why would we want to have a home that looks like so many others. Great design reflects allot of individuality and curation.
When we built our current home we went with a traditional pressed red brick with a blue spot. It is so beautiful! The only time brick should be painted is if it is ‘70’s flat mission brown brick. If your home isn’t a brutalist masterpiece that brick needs bagging and painting! Get a painter who knows what they are doing!
I live in the Dallas area and there are a lot of brick homes, especially in the suburbs. Several in my neighborhood have been painted white and some put black windows in. I have mixed feelings about it.
I have barstools and i love the design. They match my home. But i agree with you about the kids. Mine swivel on top of that. I get anxiety when my small son sits in them or my elderly mother climbs on top. Someone is gonna break an arm.
well that sounds good But i have only 1 place in Lvroom to put TV. can’t afford cable, room strange arrange, don’t get reception in any other room on deck 1. 😢
everyone is not as good at their job as you. i live where most people hire help with house. many come in making a house with no personality for homeowner using just what makes them $. wish they would hire you ❤

My mom had me rake the shag rug in our “formal living room”, then we couldn’t ever walk in there. So dumb! 😂
"...and in the background they were watching Shrek" OMG. I'm not sure why that made me laugh so hard, but it did.
Oh,my! Your neighbour with the pole needs your help, pronto! But they did provide a good laugh!🤣❤
😂😂😂
😂😎
lol "manual labor is not my energy" 😂 you're the best

We realized a smaller TV would fit in a short, Asian-style wardrobe cabinet. We don’t watch a lot of TV, so downsizing the screen size worked.

I’m glad you agree about the importance of flooring choices, and I love that you were creative with your solution!
❤😂 Thank you! "If you don't want the comments don't post it!"
Garrett you are delight. ❤😍😍😍
Thanks so much!
I think the thing I dislike most, is when people decorate their home
“Costal,” when they don’t live anywhere near an ocean, a gulf, or body of water.
😂
Me too, from Maui!
I suppose they must crave it. I have lived by the sea all my life and can't imagine not being in sight of it. If they desire that beachside life - good for them.
No …to scalloped edges, no …to ruffles, no …to fabric curtain hiding the area under the sink and no …to plastic “greenery”😊
Enjoy your Sunday Garrett ✌🏽❤
Thanks! Same to you.
Perfect segue every single time!
I love red brick houses and believe me they hold up and look a lot better than the old stuccoed houses. I hate stucco.

Garrett, you're not just a designer but a true entertainer 😂
Thank you!😊😊😊
Love you, Garrett!❤

Recently I've developed sciatica & currently on medical leave. Bar stools are now a big No No! I sold the two bar stools I had back in the summer

I painted 1950s pine paneling in my house and it looks so much better than “old man cabin look”
I have the Dayna stools from Ballard Designs. Love em. I a traditional decor lover.
I made it and only a few moments late. But the brownies are in the oven.😊
Yay! Thanks for your support.
Personality? You've got it!
Thank you!🤗🤗🤗
Thanks so much You’re videos are always spot on Been struggling about painting wood trim and fireplace in 1949 home Glad I didn’t!❤️
You are very welcome! I'm so glad it helped!
I didn't take our shag but my mom had vacuum so you could see the lines. Total OCD! 💀 My home has Oak hardwood 🖤
I just struggle with trying to make my home not look faded and old and I love that you give such good advice. ❤
Thanks for your nice comment!
Several of my neighbors load up every space on their walls with art and decor. Looks like an art gallery and not in a good way.

I don’t like them over fireplace..and that’s where mine is! So I made it huge on purpose.
Bonjour Garrett my dear it is always a pleasure to spend time with you , you have wonderful ideas and you’re honest enough tell like it is voila❤
Merci beaucoup! 🙏
I see a designer on utube who painted her fireplace black. She also painted a whole room ( ceiling included) black
I was looking at condos last year. The condo had a huge brick corner fireplace….it was painted white along with green stippling dots. 😮
🤨🤨🤨
Sorry I’m late 😊thanks for sharing ❤
Thanks for watching!

Fantastic video as always. Sorry to be late to watch today. It's my baby's Sweet 16 today and we were busy celebrating her.
Happy belated birthday to your daughter!🎂 Thanks for watching.

Thank you for another enlightening video. What is the name of the music in your opening? Love it.
Thank you! I don’t know as it’s a music track amongst many from UA-cam studio for creators to use if they like.
I don’t like barstools nor dining benches that don’t have backs on them. They are not comfortable.
Lord Farquad vibes 😂 love that wit🤩
🤗🤗🤗
Why have wood or brick if you are going to paint it, just put up plastic.😆 Nothing looks more shabby than chipping, pealing or dirty paint.
Great point!
It's rude!😂😂😂
Sheesh I was expecting them to be watching something else. Shrek of all things 😹 Truly, Shrek is love, Shrek is life.
Shrek is awesome!
well that sounds good But i have only 1 place in Lvroom to put TV. can’t afford cable, room strange arrange, don’t get reception in any other room on deck 1. 😢
I understand. There always exceptions based on need and what’s possible.
Would you also recommend placing the pole away from the windows? 😂
