      @trackshun 8 місяців тому +27

@@matthewsmith1909 well, application is everything, however, the F series engine actually began in 1990 in the accords. The F series engine began as a SOHC non vtec engine. Starting in 94-2002, the accord had vtec, ulev vtec ETC. still sohc. Also in 94, was the first DOHC for the f series, nonvtec, worst f series block. Then in 97, the F20B DOHC VTEC engine came out, people says it’s a doengrade from H, but you can make more reliable power off a stoxk F20B than H22/H23, yet you eouldnt go too far with it being swapped in a heavier car like an accord compared to a civic, since it was a 2.0L and the accords carried 2.2 & 2.3L. Which brings us to the year 2000, with the s2000 being the first inline 4 all alluminum block. Soon after in 2001 in the civic si, we saw the k20a3, the first K engine. Crvs and what not had them too. Base civics had D series and eventually R.
Now after your history lesson of the F, let me explain why it is the best engine at least until the F had competition with the K20A true vtec engine (k20a, k20a2, k20z3).
My idea of “better” sticks to the heart of the Honda world. Obviously you wouldn’t swap a Sohc non vtec engine into a bmw or nany drift capable car, but in an Eg, you can beat an integra type r with a tune on that F series.
F series have always had so much torque. The most power you’ll see on any K series that is N/A is 222hp from the FD2 type r. Highest on an F20C/22C is like 20 or 30 horses more. So that alone tell you that the F series engine has better performance and capabilility CLEARLY. In the 90’s, the F series engine was the only engine with true Iron sleeves in a cast iron block. Honda did this so that the engine would literally last forever. Cooling and block strength has always been a key feature in an F series engine. Most H & B series engines are closed deck or semi closed. The F is open which means more cooling, and the walls are still strong because of the iron sleeve. The block on the F22’s and F23’s also had the girdle of a K series from 1990-2001 BEFORE the K came out. The heads flowed more than any B or H series. And to think, a base Honda Accord from 1990 has the capability of a performance engine that wasn’t available yet. Now given, the sohc throws it off, but having a sohc whether it be non vtec or not is literally all subjective unless of course you want a Honda engine in a nother car brand. The F & K series engines since the year 2000, are the same in reliability, period. There are always 3 main differences though. 1. The flow of the head 2. the pulley system & layout, the fact that the F is for rwd car so the engine mechanisms are generally a bit different compared to a fwd/awd and more suitable for the engine the car is for. 3. Engine measurements and details such as discplacement bore compression etc.
So, the F series throughout it’s history has been the most RELIABLE, EFFICIENT, STRONGEST. Best sounding too lol if I could rev my sohc f series to 9000 i’d be dreaming.
To answer your question about why the K series is swapped more, there’s a few simple answers. K series are ffaaaaarrrr more common than the s2k F series. K series is far less expensive to work on let alone buy parts for and build. You can buy a honda element block (k24a4) for FREE and a base 01-05 rsx/civic si head (k20a3) slap em together, upgrade your fuel system, and truly? Make about 300-400hp for reliable daily use. With a budget of honestly $1000 max including a turbo kit that can withstand that amount of power, and yk excluding what extra costs you need for the car its going into. Plus, why not swap a kseries in everything. The F20/22c is a diamond, the K series is Gold. In all aspects as well.
Side note: if you want the best supersport package type of build when it comes to hondas, I reccomend using the K20A EURO R engine or an s2000 F engine.if you’re building an older civic, swap an F20B in it if not what I just told u.
An Accord, do your best to put a v6 J series in there lol. Anyways

@@MrFrambooise Through intake manifold and cylinder head port design, combined with valve timing, each intake stroke is able to draw in more air than is naturally able to inhabit the space without being forced in. Volumetric efficiency is a measurement of how well an engine is able to draw in air relative to its maximum displacement capacity. So a 4 cylinder 500cc engine operating at 100% VE will draw in 500cc’s of air over its full 4 intake strokes. Most modern (post 1990 ish) engines operate around 90-93% VE in stock form. Anything above 95% VE is considered very good, anything above 100% VE while being naturally aspirated is insane.

    I miss mine !! 😢😢😢
No matter what anyone says... that engine fit that body PERFECTLY.
The scalpel behavior of the S2000 was perfectly matched to the peaky NA engine.
You really have to drive one to understand what it is all about...
And when I say, "driving," I mean ALL the way to the 9k rev limiter.
When you KNOW by heart when "V-tec kicks in, yo !"... you can reliably predict when the rear starts to slip.
STORY time : I once switched rides for a quick drive with a friend who was the owner of a Citroen dealership. She handed me her barely broken in C4 Sport, which had a variable turbo in and some racey "stuff" from factory (special paint/stripes, seats, rims, spoiler, etc.). After switching, I cranked it to its maximum and found a little lacking in the top end and had to shift early... but it was relatively torquey, so I had some fun.
About 5 minutes later, we stopped at an emergency lane (back roads so not illegal) and she told me, "I... mmm well, your car is MUCH slower than mine"... to which I answered, "how far on the RPM gauge did you push it?" Her answer didn't surprise me : "I shifter mostly around 6,000 rpm"
I smirked and said, "ok, now... this is a Honda engine and you NEED to rev it. Don't worry, that's where they start to breathe. Go all the way to 9,000"
On the secons try, the drive was much longer. She didn't stop for anything... including the bakery she loved so much. Upon arrival to her home, she got out of the S2000, closing the door gently, and staying kind of... silent. She had finally discovered V-tec. 😉

My dad and I drove my F20C around with a real-time gas analyzer sampling the exhaust.
It turns out that the big torque boost that happens between 6500-9000 rpm corresponds not only to a different cam in the engine, but also a step change in the air:fuel ratio. The car is blowing 6% carbon monoxide out the back at 7000 rpm, which says they're running it really, really rich when they hit that HP peak.
Burning C gets you 394 kJ per mol of O2. Burning H2 gets you 572 kJ per mol of O2. So going rich of peak gets you more power per given amount of air going through the machine. It also drops the peak temp before ignition, which reduces the tendency to detonation and makes it possible to run higher compression and so get more of that heat energy into the crank.
I'm not sure how they managed this in a production engine, and still hit their ULEV emissions targets. There may have been some test engineering going on.
That also explains the black exhaust tips, and how I managed to melt the catalytic converter. Apparently too much time over 6500 rpm!
I loved the noise that thing made.

The compression ratio was around 11.7 to 1, which is high for a production car. The head also flows really well, which mskes s huge difference especially at high rpms. And lastely the vtec. I love my k24a in my 8th gen civic si. At 8,000rpm an few bolt-ons with a tune makes 250hp. With the low gear ratio 6speed it's a blast on the back roads.

@@huskkyy2872 the k24a2 or jdm k24a are were its at for na. If your gonna boost the car then k20. But for just daily driven with no turbo I'd definitely say go k24a 100%. The added torque down low put you in the seat and pulls way harder then a k20 with bolt ons. And if u do the k20 oil pump kits that's available for the k24, it will spin 9,000rpm of higher if u get springs an cams. I run my k24a to 8k without the k20 oil pump upgrade with no problems. And I don't miss reving higher at all. Smack the next gear and it pulls really hard. Ask around an most will agree with me if they have had both a k20 an k24.

@@huskkyy2872 The K24A2 TSX engine should be a *lot* cheaper than the RSX Type S, so you may as well go for that. I prefer the 2.0L myself as it is more revvy and its characteristics feel more Honda-ish as you can wind it out more, but the 2.4 certainly feels (and is) faster in lower rpms.

BluePrint Engines is going to release a Iron 4 cylinder 3.4 liter using a single LS3 head, or Ford Windsor head. The LS3 configurations is good for 340hp/500ftlbs N/A. Light turbocharging will easily make 475hp.

The record holder was actually the JDM F20C, higher comp and 9125rpm fuel cut. 125hp/L.
I had one. Problem is the bores go out of round after a track season or two and parts are expensive and balance/tolerances are very tight due to RPM. For me, LS any day. F20C is great but not if you want to beat on it hard.

F20C head is still the highest flowing factory head that I've seen out of Honda, although a ported F20C head and K series are essentially equivalent, and the i-VTEC and engine availability make the K series the ultimate win still imo. There was a time a decade ago when F20Cs were all around for $500 an engine.

I never liked the F22 nearly as much as the F20 due to lower rev limit. I did love the K20Z3 in my Si. For a cheap little economy car that thing made a nice noise and revved so high compared to its rivals like the GTI, Focus SVT, etc. and it was bulletproof.

If you owned one long enough, you know that the F20/F22 is eventually going to have thrust bearing issues which will cause crank walls, or piston slap due to the Fiber Reinforces cylinder walls ovaling. Then comes the issue when you want to build the bottom end, you cannot hone fiber Reinforced Metal Sleeves so you will have to sleeve the block with steel cylinder inserts. If you have a machine shop you trust, which there aren’t many, rebuild the engine, if you don’t, swap the F for a K24a. Draw back of the F series is that it was only made for the s2000 so parts are dime a dozen and the aftermarket support is no where near as plentiful as the K. With that being said, go K, that’s the route that I choose. Hope this gives current and future s2k owners some insight.
