    This is an incredible video and the beat review on UA-cam by far.
    So many racquet reviews just tell you how amazingly stable, powerful, control a stick may be but they never really address who is best served with a racquet. This video gives a full on breakdown of 3 distinct play types and what racquets work best for each.

    Love the video and it really showcases the dramatic results that can come from making racket changes. We've actually seen this twice in the last 5 years with Fed and Joko.
    In 2014, Fed debuted his new racket and had limited success until he had to take time off for knee surgery in 2016 which turned out to be the best thing that could have happened to him because it not only gave him time to heal from knee surgery and back to full fitness, it also gave him time to get used to that racket. The result? Seemingly out of nowhere, he came back to Australia after about 6 months off and shocked the world with a brilliant performance against Rafa in that Epic 5 set final coming back from 1-3 down in that 5th set to win the title. We really saw for the first time, that nuclear backhand that Rafa simply had no answer for.
    Fed went on to win 6 more titles that year including Wimbledon and 3 M1000 titles and reclaim the #1 ranking. Well into 2018, I would say Fed was playing the best tennis of his life and I absolutely believe Fed v. 2017 was a better player than Fed v 2007.
    The takeaway for me with Fed changing rackets is it takes time for a player of his caliber to fully see the results.
    Let's talk about Joko. In 2015, Joko had arguably the best season ever in the ATP winning 3 out of 4 GS titles that year and he carried his winning streak through the
    2016 FO - his 4th GS title in a row - The only male in history besides Rod Laver to accomplish that.
    His winning streak took a toll on him, however, and a serious elbow problem developed which would eventually require surgery. Joko played the rest of 2016 and did really well but in 2017, he was a shell of himself winning only 2 small titles and he finally hung it up that year opting for elbow surgery.
    Joko recovered beautifully from elbow surgery but when he came back in 2018, he added one more element to his game
    that is not talked about; he retooled his racket. Although he's using the same racket, he made 3 significant changes:
    1. Increased length
    2. Decreased lead tape
    3. String pattern changed from 18x20 to 18x19
    The result? Well, not good out of the gate as he started the 2018 season 6-6 losing in the 1st or 2nd round in 3 out of his first 6 tournaments.
    At Queens, something shifted and his new game started to emerge and made the finals losing to Cilic but then an earthquake happened and the great Novak Djokovic came on like a tsunami winning Wimbledon and the USO along with 2 M1000 titles.
    What happened?
    He's got more power and better control with this racket. The string pattern has yielded devastating results because he can generate more spin and
    for me, that has resulted in a staggering amount of deep shots where he's pinning his opponents over and over again on the baseline.
    His backhand is the best in history. There is no debate there but his forehand has become equally devastating because he's hitting his
    corners deeper and with greater consistency. The new racket has also allowed him to generate better angles on his serve.
    Here's the scary part: We are seeing an upwards trajectory in Djokovics game. He's only going to get better as he continues to get used to his racket! He has won 5 out of the last 9 Grand Slams since Australia, 2018 and since 2015, he's won 10 out of 21!
    There is no longer a question of IF Novak will catch Rafa with 19 Grand Slams and Fed with 20 Grand Slams, the question has now moved on from when and how many he'll end up with!

    WoW - great video Jonas!!!
    And I really can't remember, Rafa using anything but his Aero. But, as you explained it was made specifically for him & I do recall that. Shows how long he's been playing & that we all get used to seeing Rafa with his Aero. Of course, Roger switching sticks was huge news, but in the scheme of things wasn't all that long ago as per Rafa. Novak, seems more inclined to switch up & try new equipment, just like we've seen with his game, partly due to injuries, partly due to just wanting to gain an edge on his rivals.
    How lucky tennis fans are to have all 3 of them playing at the same time. All champions, all with totally different characters, all with different games pushing each other along the way.
    Thanks. :)

    @Sean-xs1zp 4 роки тому +18

    6:38 spin rate comparison is very interesting. RAFA has 20 inches more net clearance and more spin than Roger but only 3 inches more bounce height....Anybody knows why?

    • @marcantonios1066
      @marcantonios1066 4 роки тому +1

      To my knowledge net clearance has the most to do with RPM, not net clearance. Fed still hits with nearly 4000 rpm on that forehand, and his racquet head acceleration tends to be pretty significant on that side, so I'm guessing that's why the ball still gets so much work put on it. Maybe has something to do with his grip too?

    Great video and info. Regarding the gripsize I was playing with size 3 earlier and no overgrip. Now Im playing with size 2 and an overgrip. This way Im able to grip (and maintain) a really "full western" grip, the more and harder I go for a shot the more western the grip becomes, sometimes even beyond "full western". The normal forehand grip is around western, but of course I do slice on the forehand too when needed. Im playing with Head Prestige Touch MP, I great racquet. They are customized with a lot of lead and really head-heavy balance (actually even around 34.5 cm strung), but thats the way I like it and I think it suits my game. Every time I try any other racquet Im shocked how light they feel and how much easier they are to "whip with", Im not saying its a bad thing but it feels strange for me. My personal opinion is to go with a as heavy racquet you can handle and swing properly without stressing your arm that much so you feel "pain" after 4-5 hours of use. A too high weight that you are not able to swing fast and good enough will just ruin your game, and likely also your arm in the longer run. The line is fine, and it takes time (years for me) to find what seems to suit you. Please also remember when messing around with lead that it is poisonous, and add no more than 5-8 g at time. And dont mess around with strings and stringtension at the same time because then you have really no idea what really made the differnce (lead, other strings or tension), Stick to your regular stringing, and when you have found what you believe is the right racquet weight/balance than you can try to change strings and tension. Actually I did not bother to experiment with strings and tension (tension took me 3 years to find what works best for me, strings was easier since I honestly more or less only played with RPM Blast), I stick to my regular strings and tension since I never had any arm issues, but Im not saying that I after playing 10+ hours of tennis weekly that I do not feel some "muscle fattigue" in my hitting arm, but it does not hurt at all when playing, usually the fattigue can be felt after you have stopped playing :D.

    Cool video, Tennisnerd. I've often wondered if any/all of the major tennis racquet brand manufacturers could or do currently develop certain models that are very much like the competition. For instance, I'd be curious to know if something like the old ProStaff would have a comparable model among say the Prince tennis racquet lineup, or is that something specific to Wilson, hence guys like Sampras and Federer naturally gravitated to Wilson by necessity, Nadal to Bablolat, and Novak to the Head series.

    • @thebeardedgolfer9819
      @thebeardedgolfer9819 4 роки тому +1

      hiwayman981 Most racquet companies have over the years, lots of comparable models. I personally have a collection where I could pull out 40 racquets from 10 different manufacturers all from the 80’s all trying to be similar to the ps85, with all kinds of adds like silica and ceramic. Most normal humans can’t deal with the ps85 realistically and so as is normal practice now the are a selection of more manageable choices to fit each player just a few less options back then.
      Imo very few of the the attempts from other brands feel quite as good as the early prostaff lineup as far as those small 85 midsize, which is why they all died off. Again, imo the early Head Prestige was the other best feeling/playing midsize.
      I have heard there are arguments that the RF97 and many other companies offerings have some significant hints of the Head PT630/280/PT57a which some would argue is the greatest bone stock retail racquet of all time. Perhaps the pro stock Wilson H19 specifically and H22 were some of the comparable rivals in direct competition.
      Another quick example of copying rivals for example was the original Babolat Pro Drive Roddick made famous and the simiar Prostaff Ncode Tour (hole that is the right one) in bright green nobody really saw. Very comparable playing characteristics, but with no superstar player just fizzled out.
      So many set up options, even the prostock racquets with retail paint jobs, which are way different than the retail counterparts, are delivered to the pros light and strong and after lots of mods play so different, hard to wrap ones head around how companies reverse engineer then keep discard what the learn and then apply, without getting there hands on a specific pros racquet and looking at all aspects.
      Poor tech guys looking for fractions of a percent improvements each year. I wonder if after trying for almost 30 years, they ever just sit back in there chair, gaze at the PT57a and shrug there shoulders and say” It’s perfect.”

    Great vid mate, Very informative and interesting,
    i have a RF97 with VS touch 57 mains and 4g 54 crosses. This is a hard racquet to master. No way can I play a comp with it but I love practicing and hitting with my kids with it. (Not literally hitting my kids with the racquet by the way, lol)
    I can totally understand why the RF97 is a best seller but I believe so many people could be playing better tennis if they demo’d a tonne of racquets and find the perfect one for them, but marketing is a powerful thing i guess.

    Rafa's original Aero Pro Drive also has the wolfer system in it which has rounded grommets at the top, around the hoop and in the throat of the racket to increase the strings movement at impact therefore increasing more power and spin! Many racket companies have copied this when the Patent ran out. Federer uses leather power pads to get the same effect.

      If you like mid head size racquets, any old head radical mp (before graphene era) is worth trying. Microgel and Liquidmetal Radical MP are really good, although they feel a little different from each other:
      www.tennis-warehouse.com/reviews/hmgrad/hmgradreview.html
      www.tennis-warehouse.com/reviews/lmrad/lmradreview.html
      If you're not sure of what to get yet, try testing as much as possible or even buy used racquets.
      TW also has a "Similar Playing Racquet" feature (twu.tennis-warehouse.com/cgi-bin/similar.cgi), which might be helpful to understand what plays like the racquet you're familiar with, but in the end it comes down to what you test and like.

      Good point! Rafa plays 2, Fed 3 and Novak 3 with two overgrips (4). Rafa uses a smaller grip to be able to rotate the racquet faster and use the wrist even more. Federer also likes a faster wrist action but uses the Eastern grip which works better with a proportional grip size. Novak has arguably the least wrist action on his shots and the more complex backswing. Based on height and hand size, they could all have used a 4...

      It's the backhand and the consistency, I'd say. Also mental strength. When the power hitters hit Rafa off the court, they really have to be on and do it quickly. Novak's backhand can handle Rafa's crosscourt forehand better than anyone else, and he can hang with Rafa over 5 sets and still win (with much more difficulty on clay in that scenario).

      Correct. It's a custom mold that doesn't have a matching retail version, tho there might be a very similar frame in the current lineup. Generally the way I look at it is a pro stock is a mold descended from an earlier top-spec retail model that an era of players got used to. These players want to keep the frame they've grooved their stroke with, so that racquet "lives on" so to speak, in the firm of a pro stock model. Even newer pros joining a brand will pick from the pro stock catalog, since these are frames the players can expect to be in production for years to come (available to pros only, of course).

Collectors, fans, coaches, players, organizers and more. I have been lucky to own, borrow and use many, many pro player racquets over the years. I work hard to try to bring interesting information to the audience because it is a passion. I could do a lot more income-bringing activities than Tennisnerd (and this is definitely not ALL I do). I simply love connecting with other tennis fans and players online and in real life. There are a lot of knowledgeable people on tennis forums that provide interesting information about racquets and gear. I suggest anyone who is interested in that to head over there as I don't know it all and have never claimed to do so. I do Tennisnerd out of passion, not to "steal" other people's knowledge. The two terms are not mutually exclusive. He is an all court player because he is a threat from baseline to net and everywhere in between. He is an attacker in the sense that he is usually looking to pressure and rush his opponents by taking the ball early and hitting aggressively, rather than waiting for a mistake.

    Nice video. I think all of the pro rackets has been customized so what you can buy in the market is close but not what they play with. I agree with your characterization of Fed and Rafa. I don’t agree with Joker. I don’t think he’s an all court player. He seems very uncomfortable at the net. His overheads are shaky. He is more a positional baseline defender. He plays a lot of steady ball, just waiting for his opponents to make a mistake and when gets into a good position, he will hit a winner. None of his ground strokes are intimidating. He use to be a more aggressive baseliner before his arm surgery, attacking every angle by redirecting his opponents power and it was more interesting to watch but he had to change his game because his body couldn’t support that strategy. Because his current style is to grind out points, I personally find it hard to watch.
