People can get so fixated on the personal lives of celebrities, it can really place mental limits on their appreciating the possibilities of meaning and message in the art itself. Lol, I wonder how many people listened to Bohemian Rhapsody and wondered if Freddie Mercury actually murdered somebody? I also find it interesting (and quite annoying) how often UA-cam reactors listen to a song and automatically assume it's about romantic love, even when the lyrics are quite obviously not about just that. I guess everybody finds or projects their own meaning in and onto art. If what they're looking for is gossip, then I suppose that shows where their mental limits currently lie.

@@bertcompton Doesn't have to specifically be HER shitty boyfriend, though. It's a common occurrence for authors that fans assume that experiences that happen to characters in their books are really what happened to the author. They seem to wish drama on the artist. Imagination can be a powerful tool for both parties involved. Creative vs destructive in some cases. But yes, it's probably a rare woman who hasn't experienced that kind of shitty boyfriend, provided she dates long enough. Billie is addressing the bigger picture, but many fans are focussing in on her instead.
Damn that's how it feels when you end a relationship with a narcissist. Also that echo in the song really sounds like she's in isolation, adds more to the song.

Since no-one else has, Billie's said that Aurora's video Runaway inspired her to do what she does. That Runaway (2016 btw) is blowing up right now, just as Billie is gearing up to release her LP gives me hope for this effed up world.

Maybe the Devil reference is reflected in the desert scene, as in the story of Jesus being tempted by Satan (serpent imagery) in the desert for 40 days. An intensely poetic way to think about a highly toxic relationship.

The new album will be eclectic AF, much like the last one was. She's lulling us into thinking she gone all Taylor Swift acoustic, with this song and the snippet of the title track ... but there'll be bangers and tricks aplenty. She has a history of putting out weird-ass radio-unfriendly singles ahead of albums. It works a charm for her.

Overall, what she wants you to take from the song is that everyone has power and you should use your power in a positive way and not do something in a negative way like SA. Billie herself was a victim of statutory rape starting at the age of 13. Yeah Billie is really not a radio friendly artist. She has covered a lot of really dark topics but those songs are less popular (like “listen before I go” ), but still just as good as any of her other songs. A lot of people dislike her because of her dark topics. But she’s in a much better place now than she was before so her songs are getting less and less dark, and thus more radio friendly I guess. We’ll see on her new album.
