    I went to Beijing December last year. What shocked me was how clean the air was. Years ago Beijing was one of the most polluted city. Now its so clean. Talked to the locals and they said the government put in effort to clean the city couple of years back. Banned coal burning, shifted/closed down polluting factories, all motorcycles and public transports runs on electricity etc..

      They started the whole environment protection initiative across the country in 2017 iirc, a ton of inefficient production capacities were shut down and violators were fined and prosecuted. I was working in the cement industry for LafargeHolcim back then so kinda experienced it first hand. We had to spent a ton of money on emission and dust control to meet the standards.

      @spadeysay6846 3 роки тому

      I'm actually quite surprised that what you said is not often explained that way...other than that chinese people are very direct with what they say. Maybe because in China, the common use of NiHao when you meet someone is a little different from what many other overseas chinese use, ie in direct translation as "Have You Eaten?" Which is exactly the sentiment you mentioned. The historical link to the scarcity of food in China in earlier times is the explanation for that.

    Hi Nico. New to your channel. Thanks for telling everyone about China. I think, to change the twisted views about China imposed by Western media, we need people like you to share your real experience. Just a few observations from a Chinese living overseas for a dozen years.
    First, I think the one thing to hammer into anyone who's not familiar with China is how "big" China actually is. That would explain a lot of shocks. I still remember, when I went to visit UK as a high school student, we lived in a homestay family. The homestay lady asked me one day "Is China as big as UK?". The point is the sheer size of China makes it very hard for a person to picture the country together if they do not live in it for a long time. For example, people talks about eating bugs, rats, bats etc, but trust me, most Chinese people don't. As to eating dogs, it is controversial, but my feeling is that more and more young people are against it these days. For a country of 1.4 billion people and a vast geographical area, you would certainly find all sorts of values, good and bad, forward and backward. That would explain a lot of the shocks you experienced as well. For example, telling a girl that she is fat, is definitely not socially acceptable. Also, it might well because of the language barrier and mistranslation. If the person did say that you are "fat", which you definitely are not, then that is a very rude person by any standard.
    Second, you should bear in mind that China is a country that got developed in such a short time at such a high speed. So there is a huge gap between the major cities and the country side. Even within the major cities, there are the super rich, the rich, the middle class and those left behind. Because of the size of the population, you will see a large amount of people within each of those social class. So people think, well, all my friends around me are pretty wealthy, so China must be very developed. Not true. That might be because you are in their social circle. Some people say, all I see is corrupted government and censorship. Not true, UA-cam is actually far better at controlling what people read and think. In the video, you mentioned squat toilet. That is one illustration of it. If you go to the public toilet on the street, you definitely will not find free toilet paper. But I guarantee that you will find top quality toilet paper in one of the highend shopping malls in CBD. Also, as to smoking, China has a huge problem for lung cancer and more people are quitting to smoke now. But I guess it is much harder to change the lifestyle of people over time and even harder to deprive the tobacco company of their profits.
    Third, Chinese have very strange complexion towards foreigners. That explains the friendliness you experienced (and the free beer). My view is that this has something to do with the policy when China is first opened up. I remember when I was in primary school (in the 90s), it was still not very common to see foreigners in China. So what we are taught was, we need to treat foreigners with respect and make them feel welcome. Literally, this is what we are taught. Back then, even now, there are privileges foreigners can enjoy in China. For example, there were foreigner only hotels in the 80s and 90s selling fancy food and coffee. To go there for a slice of cake was such a luxury for the family. I would say that is still lingering on today. When there is a foreigner, Chinese people tend to treat them with out of ordinary friendliness. But let's be real, they won't always treat each other as nice in life and no society can survive by being super nice.
    Lastly, I noticed some people say that you are gonna be labeled a double agent. I know it is a joke. But it is indeed politically incorrect (according to Western propoganda) to praise China in anyway. I will just refer you to Nathan Rich's channel for more information.
    Anyway, I have rambled on long enough. Have fun in China!

    • @Nicofilms
      @Nicofilms  4 роки тому +10

      Welcome to my channel and I hope you like it. I just want to say thank you for leaving such a long and thought out comment. It's really interesting to see people's views on things and explaining further some of the points I made. Yes, I think people just can't understand the sheer size of China and just how diverse it actually is. Most people have little knowledge of the country and what they see is usually swayed a certain way. When I came to China I didn't realise there was such a stigma as I had an open mind. By making UA-cam videos I come across comments all the time like this saying I am an agent, working for the CCP etc and I just think it's funny. Half the time it is from people who have never even visited this country. If you say something good you must be getting paid, if you say something bad it's the truth. I think my videos are quite objective and I literally try and show life exactly how it is for me and my personal experience. Hope you continue to enjoy my videos!

      About the dog thing, the meat dogs are separated from pet dogs, they are totally different spices. The meat dogs are raised in farms, just the chickens and the pigs.
      Don't be so negative to everything, there are goods, bads, and everything in between in humanity. Who knows which comes next? You clearly have a smaller chance of getting a bad neighbor.

    People tend to comment on your body shapes or how you look today to show that they pay attention to you and they care about you as they have noticed the changes on your look. It’s with good intentions :) and it’s also an ice breaker to talk about what you’re up to lately

      Im Chinese and I never used to understand why Westerners say Chinese like to comment on your weight with the implication that they were being judged. I used to think, what're you talking about? Ive never experienced that.
      But then it dawned on me that they must've mistaken the care and attention as "commenting on your weight". People must realise that often when Chinese do that, it's not meant as criticism. They are, like the OP saId, showing that they care.

      They did build fully functional, concrete foundation hospitals with capacities of over 1000 in a week. There is no way, a western country could do that even in a year. Look at the US, their hospitals are overwhelmed, under staffed and under supplied. I doubt they could even erect a tent in the same amount of time as China building their hospitals. Yes, that would be more than one.

    I am from the US, and it's funny seeing how someone from the UK is shocked by different things than we'd be shocked about. A 3 hour trip is nothing for us in Illinois... We drive 3 hours for a day trip to the lake and don't bat an eye about it. This was something I found cool when I visited europe. I'm in France, and an hour train ride later I'm in Spain. And temperatures... We go from -40°f to 100°f (-40°c to 38°c) with no rhyme or reason. Sometimes it's 90° in October, and sometimes it snows in June.
    Differences in countries and cultures are always so interesting. Can't wait to visit china!

    Thanks to explain so clear to people that really do not understand china!! They only listen fake things fake news. Of course there are bad things as any country has, but one person who travel do not go a place to see bads, that' s enough in own country! Right? And what I see here is just north of china! Hope you can show many places from there, and thanks again to show people how is to be there, you tell by yourself! Thanks😍🙏🙏🙏

      Yeah I think there are always a lot of misconceptions about countries before you visit and then you are like oh wow that is totally different to what I imagined. You can never really judge a place until you've been.

    Honestly squat toilets aren’t that bad. The human body is designed to be in squat position & it’s how we did it since the beginning of time so there’s a bit of a natural instinct that kicks in when using them. That’s why toilet stools sell like crazy in the west! It’s the same concept just different set up. I’ve also always been more of a bidet person so when I moved into an apartment that didn’t have one & I had to start using toilet paper again, I really noticed how much less sanitary it is. I have to keep wet wipes nearby just to get a glimmer of the old days lol.

    Great video. How are you getting on with the language? Which place have you visited that has made you say “oh wow, amazing?”

      Thank you, I know enough to get by but not have conversations with people. It needs a lot of time to focus on it and unfortunately I don't have the time to commit. Honestly pretty much every place I've been in China for different reasons. The cities because they are so built up and modern, the temples and traditional architecture because they are so beautiful and the scenery is stunning. The landscape in Guangxi, Yunnan and Inner Mongolia were amazing we made some videos on these places. There are so many places still to visit though.

      @@Nicofilms I have great respect for people going to China and making a living there especially non Chinese people. That is a massive jump and commitment. How is everything going now in the midst of all this coronavirus pandemic? Suppose everything is slowly getting back to normality. Here in the UK the severity of the problem still hasn't really sunk in. Please stay safe and will definitely look out for your future videos.

      Yeah it was a big move and it is really hard at times, but we love it. Yeah it is starting to slowly get back to normal but the precautions are still very much in place so I think it will still be a while! Where do you live in the UK? I've been staying in touch a lot with family and friends and I think it's starting to sink in a bit more. Maybe now that Boris has it.

      I live in Canterbury, Kent. Originally from Malaysia. I’ve never been to China. My father was born in Canton. My brother and mum went a couple of years ago to tour and see the amazing sights. I would love to spend a few months in China to see the people and all the wonderful sights.
