- If you’re new to cinema4D, you’re probably wondering what kind of hardware you’ll need to learn it. A bit of an involved question, so let’s dive in and answer these questions:
Is it possible?
What’s the experience like?
Mac vs PC - what’s the difference?
Do you need a desktop?
Starting off, is it even possible to run, let alone learn cinema4D on a laptop?
In short - yes, absolutely:
Still frames on physical renderer - Absolutely.
Animations - can be problematic. Definitely slow unless you're running something top of the line.
Access to third party renderers (Redshift, Arnold, Octane and Corona)- Dependent on hardware, Mac is limited, PC is not.

Hey folks! If you're interested in Cinema, I just released a 25 minute guide on how to learn it and my experience doing so. Link in info card :D
Hey Matt! I love to see your take on M1 Mac Vs PC on cinema 4D
I'm so keen to do that but I don't have acess to either Cinema or an M1 at the moment! As soon as I do in will
This is exactly what I was begging to find out. Thank you :)))
Sooo helpful! Thank you so much for this straight forward honest info.
really enjoyed this video, helped me out! thank you
Most welcome mate!
It was so the advice I was searching for!.. Thanks a lot!
Most welcome :-)
I lived in New Zealand for a year, I smiled when I saw Auckland!
Your video gave me hope that animation is compatible with traveling at least at the first stage :D Thanks for sharing!
Hello Matt thanks you for the video, today what’s you recommend me for take laptop wich good budget ? Thanks you so much !
thx for the good information :)
Thanks Matt, really informative. Could you design on a high spec MacBook and then send off to a render farm? As in, is all the power needed for rendering, not necessarily the designing?
what do you think of the mac NOW, with the renderers now supporting mac? i really would love to know
Matt Kander is possible to make this 1:34 using Cinema 4d with Imac 5k without Redshift for example? Cheers
Great !! Thank You 👌
That was Very helpful thanks o/
Most welcome Treicy!
What if I already have the Mac 2019 i9 32 RAM 5500M 8GB will it effects anything bad on my Mac?
Hey I have a QUESTION..
Ok. I have an IPad PRO 2020, and i would like to use it like a graphic tablet for my laptop BUT I DON T KNOW WHAT COMPUTER TO BUY.
I m gonna use programs like AE, CINEMA 4D, RESOLUME ARENA, toon boom, Adobe illustrator, premiere, animate
For animation 2/3D and video mapping. So what about a MacBook Pro with Radeon pro 5300M ? Or better a Windows laptop? With this one can I use my IPad like graphic tablet? Thank you
Thank you very much.
Very insightful video of a topic that I have been thinking about!
Quick question: I already have a Macbook Po [2009]. How much can you push the Mac to create on C4D? You mentioned that you can create styleframes with no hassle on Mac. What about really short animation sequence?
And how is your C4D work looking like now? All the best!
I don't know how you possibly could. It looks as though you need a Metal capability and that was not introduced until 2012 I am upgrading my late 2011 17" Macbook Pro today for that reason despite it having dedicated graphics card.
@@KafkaShoppe Well, good timing! Thank you.
Just finished watching the Apple M1 Chip Event and it showed swift working of C4D on them! Hope its true and really works then this new batch of Macs would be Super!
Totally true! On macbook render time is too long... if you have lots of objects will run slowly. I learned with a macbook pro then sold it. I have the zephyrus g14 now and, this guy is much better than was my macbook
Hey Bro, Asus zenbook pro duo 15 OLED(2021) or ROG zephyrus pro 15 gx550..which one is better for cinema 4d??
So What do you suggest now? m3 max Macbook pro Pr gaming Laptop?
Hey fam can u teach us how to install cinema 4d for MacBook retina 2018 please 🙏?
Hi Matt, just let you know that the link of HP Laptop deets doesnt work.
I watched your video so I ask you for macbook pro 16inche i9 32ram graphics 4gb 5500 what do you think about this laptop with cinema 4d and after effects
As I said in the video - i would not recommend an apple laptop for cinema4D work. If you have one, you can get by with the physical renderer but I would never purchase one specifically to use for cinema4D.
Have you try eGPU like razer core x + nvidia on mbp?
I haven’t but as of Catalina - Apple are dropping support for nvidia hardware which sucks. So this won’t be a viable option moving forward
Thanks for the video! Do you think I can use Cinema 4D on this notebook? (Notebook Acer Aspire 5 A515-52G-50NT, Intel Core i5-8265U, 8GB, HD 1TB, SSD 128GB, NVIDIA GeForce MX130 2GB, Windows 10 Home, 15.6´)
You could but it wouldn't be terribly performant. It would be ok for stills and some light motion graphics stuff, i'd encourage you to download a trial though from maxon's website and see how you get on!
@@MattKander Thanks!!
Hey,now there is m1 cheap. Macbook can support gpu renders like redshift on m1 cheap
Thank you! Best wishes to you in your 3D journey 😁 I used to model and do some simple animations in cinema 4d. I agree you don’t need crazy setup at the beginning.
Thanks so much! Just getting started but really enjoying it so far!
Matt Kander well I guess you like it huh 😅 happy you found what you like. I remember you were an iOS Dev not that long ago. But I’m also learning new stuff getting myself into music finally. So excited for it as well!
@@TheZazatv I'm not an IOS dev yet - currently working on that. The cool thing about IOS is the AR kit and how a lot of the cinema4D stuff can translate across to that. So i'm hoping to be able to bring the two disciplines together to create some really cool (although very niche) content lol good luck with the music Simon :D
Im using macbook pro 15 mid 2015 do you think it's better to add eksternal gpu or upgrade it into other laptop with gtx inside? I don't know why but my macbook couldn't support octane render. thanks you 🙏
Watch the video - all of that is covered and explained :)
The 2015 MacBook Pro does not have thunderbolt 3 ports, so connecting an egpu through thunderbolt 2 is quite tricky and slow. So an egpu for the 2015 MacBook Pro is not worth it.
So basically, if I am using Mac Intel Iris pro then I can't use any 3rd party plugin like Arnold, octane, etc? Is it fine to render without any if it right just to execute stills or simple motions in Cinema 4D? Thanks
You can use Arnold CPU, the standard / physical tenderer and Octane just released their beta for Metal!! So you if you’re cool with using beta tech then you could use octane
Matt Kander that sounds good man. Thank you. Will update you on this
In general, that is the case. If you already have the mac you can use the "pro render" here:www.amd.com/en/technologies/radeon-prorender
Jaime Duncan thanks bro
Can i using mac or macbook for rendering 3d using octane?
Octant just announced a beta for the metal api in the last month! So it’s not production ready but yes you can now render with octane on Mac!
What if you get a MacBook Pro 16 running Bootcamp with an eGPU??
With that money you can buy a flagship PC setup and a laptop for casual work
Why choose the complicated and expensive path
Im using macbook pro 15 inch 2015 and the octance render cannot working properly, can you suggest me what to do?
You have to be on the beta im pretty sure to get access?
In case you have missed it, Octane now is officially available for Macs.
2021 - redshift working on mac with AMD GPUs or M1 graphics. It's not that good as Nvidia GPUs I guess but it's works fine.
Do you think 16gb is okay for Cinema 4d?? Im getting the macbook pro m1 16gb
Great video Matt! Can you do a video on learning Blender vs C4D on a macbook?
It’s very similar! I’m just about to release a video about my whole process learning cinema4D tonight. Would love for you to check it out!
As for blender and MacBooks - I found cinema to be more taxing than cinema. Any questions and I’d be happy to field them
Awesome! I'll keep an eye out for that :)
I'm assuming you meant to say Cinema' is more taxing than blender?
I dabbled in both softwares (just very basic learning) but found the shortcuts in blender to be a bit harder to navigate on mac. However, do you think in the long run blender is a better option program wise for a mac user?
@@pranavi.s yes! Ahh, long term cinema is really expensive. I can’t afford to keep up the subscription as it’s a hobby for me and I switched to doing some work in blender instead.
Try both! I personally prefer cinema, and if I could afford it I’d stick with it
@@MattKander Yes totally agree! I was able to finesse a trial for a couple months - but considering this will probably also be a hobby for me, I wonder if it's best to invest more time in to Blender for the long haul. Subscription models for softwares suck lol
Not even “looking at you adobe” anymore - almost every softwares moved to a subscription service lol
I mean, just go with what you have. Personally unless it was an active hobby of mine, I’d just stick with blender so if I don’t do mograph for a month, I haven’t blown through 160 euros or whatever Maxon are charging now. A lot of the concepts are shared between the two so you could always switch back with a little effort.
Also uploaded the new video :-)
He’s not lying , we bought a Mac for cinema octane it didn’t work we switched it out for a windows
2 months off with skillshare in the description! Cheers :D
Buying a laptop just to “give it a try” is quite pricey. I think c4d has a free trial, but then you need to pay for a subscription after. Most people who don’t have any experience in 3D modelling and only want to give it a try won’t be able to afford to buy a new computer and a c4d subscription. People on a budget, I would recommend learning blender as it’s free to use.
Hey, so I never said you should buy a laptop to give it a try. Not at all. My recommendation in this video is to download the free trial and see if it works on your current machine. If it does, great, if not then the rest of the video still stands as a recommendation on what type of laptop you'll need.
Is that even a question? Of course! You can do everything on a laptop. :)
I heard render farms are cheap.
Mmm, I mean not really lol they're quite expensive imo depending on what you want to render
absolutely NO - M1 User expiariance here....
Macbook pro 16 i9/ 64gb ram...+ cinema4d + corona render = fucking rock stable laptop for cinema4d and renderings!
Everything faster for stills you have cheap top render farms:
1. RanchComputing etc
Video is not good....
never use unstable idiotic OS ( like windows ) for serious payed jobs!
Corona lol
He’s wrong
What am I wrong about?
Very uninformed video
Me looking at my MBP 2020 with bad eyes right now🥲
