- Today we experienced India's craziest sport, Jallikattu!
Every year during Pongal festival the people in Tamil Nadu host the Jallikattu event. This is an ancient bull taming event thats been around for over 2000 years.
We headed over to Avaniyapuram just outside Madurai City and had a quality day.
A local Tamil family invited us up to their rooftop where we had some of the best views in the house, they even invited us in for homecooked South Indian food which was incredible.
The Indian hospitality in Tamil Nadu is special 🇮🇳

@@EllisWR it served a practical purpose back in the day in case you did not know. Bulls were draft animals in the past and used extensively(there were no horses in south India) for transport and agriculture. This way strong bulls were selected and mated with cattle to produce strong offsprings.

Tamil culture is one of the oldest in the world and same with Tamil language. I am not a Tamilian but I respect the folks. Also, the current right wing extreme nationalist party who is in power at the Center tried to ban Jallikattu. But Tamil people didn't let go and fought to retain it. Hats off. South India is still better as the diversity is being given importance where as North is getting forcibly uniformed with one religion, one language, .... politics... resulting in dead langauges and culture.

A British guy named Francis Wyte Ellis who was a Collector of Madras in British period. He translates a Tamil literature named Thirukural to English. He loved Tamil language and researched it throughout his life. After his death he had a room full of old tamil written palm scripts He had been saved those for research purpose. Unfortunately those palm scripts are gone after him. To honor him many places in Chennai named as Ellis. If you want to know more about him search him in google. The roots of the Pongal festival Jallikattu can be traced back to over 3000 years ago. It is believed to have been practiced as a sacred ritual to honor the cattle, representing wealth and prosperity. Tamil people in the past who raised and took care of their bulls especially the bride's side, gave this sport as a challenge to our brave men that whoever controls the bull will be the bridegroom of their family. So Jallikattu has changed a bit from the past since the past once was the deadliest but we're practicing it to keep our ancient sport and tradition alive. Welcome to India and our State Tamil Nadu. Bro you guys should definitely go to the Andaman & Nicobar Islands or Laxadweep islands it's literally heavenly, white sand , plam trees , un touched or less people, blue water ❤. And North East for completely different experience than rest of India it's so cool , nature is beautiful , food is wonderful and it's not that known in the western media.
