Well no animal is killed here so I think that there must be no hue and cry being hindu we people should support our tamilian brother its their culture and they are very protective about it ..I am seeing many people here commenting negative about it but we have no right to judge them as it is not good to see things with our perspective..
This is how we play in tamil nadu.... Healthy bulls are identified and allowed to breed by this. Rest are taken care more to make healthier. And those bull ll participate on next pongal. Even our kids play with calf like this

It is part of tamil culture and it played in our state festival pongal in honor of the bulls who help the farmers in agriculture ....And it is part of our culture even if one hindu , muslim & christian etc we are all one as tamilians and Indians 💪💪🇮🇳🇮🇳
Rules are: the back bone of those bulls are called 'Thimil'. The participants need to hold that thimil for 10-12 seconds or hold till bull reaches the end. This is our tradition... 💝💝
It's the great event , which is held in Tamil Nadu on occasion of Poongal festival. Only in Tamil Nadu. It's Tamilian's thousand years old culture. We Hindu worship cow & it's progeny & treat them as our family members. jallikatu is their unique culture. From humanterian point of view ,it seems violation of animal rights. A petition had been filed to ban this event. Even supreme Court had ordered to ban it. But affter a strong & violent protest by tamilian supreme Court had to take the order back . It's thier culture & deep rooted to their sentiment. if i would ask stop killing cow or other animals by the name of qurbani then , would you listen to me ? Perhaps no , because it's your believe . hello friend , nice comments but i would like to correct you that pongal festival is not confined only to hindus. It is celebrated by whole of tamilnadu like onam in kerala and baishaki in punjab. It is a harvest festival, mostly our livelihood and economy is based on agriculture so after harvesting as a sign of thanksgiving we people thank those who helped us survive, like making pongal(its a south indian dish) for the sun, that's the first day of pongal and on the second day the second important one are the cows and bulls, cows are bathed and decorated and with bulls we play a sport called jallikattu. This culture is followed since ages in all tribes , this is our kind of celebration, how each of em celebrate might differ from palce to place. This is the reason why it got spread like wild fire. No offence but wanted you to know the concept, coz after this jallikattu protest the whole of india is looking at us as if we were some cruel minded who would torture their pets for fun or tamil pride. Tamil pride has nothing to do with this , hope you understand.
Yes pongal is a harvest festival which is being celebrated by all community people in Tamilnadu as like Onam in kerala. Also one more correction we did a non-violent protection right..
After seeing the negative comments down .i would like explain my north indian frds tat it is not cruelty act media&some coroperate peta grp potrated like tat .but actual truth tat they need to export cows &in india 90%cows are hybrid the milk we used to drink is not healthy...tiz fest is save cows from those kind of grps orelse u would see such kind of natural breeds only in zoo.so ppl before saying smtg have a research &make a clr view about it..dont just fall only into media spells..so understanding few traditions is diificult until u analyze it...

I would like to share my thoughts on this game. I live in Tamilanadu where this sport is being Played. In my observation i have came to know that this is a very old culture( about 400- 100 BC) of Having Bull vs Man fight and its mostly played in Agricultural areas of Tamilnadu.
In this Sport they bring the strongest breeds of wild bull to the arena and participants try to control the bull. Objective of the participants is to ride on the bull or hang on the hump of the bull as long as its is possible for him to do. The Most longest rider (in terms of time spent on riding or hanging) wins.
The reason behind practising this ancient culture is in ancient times when farmers used to control wild bull tame them for ploughing and breeding. Since then this culture has been practiced till today. Those bulls which calms down and Allows the rider to ride are tamed and used in Farms for ploughing where as those bull which remain violent and charged are used for breeding.
And its a belief that drinking a cow's milk which is been crossed by such a violent bull makes them stronger and its more healthy.
Its a very ancient game and in order to motivate people of modern age to play and maintain this culture for future lucrative rewards are given to the winner and participants. In most places they tie gold ornaments on the bull's horns and participants try to snatch it while fighting with bull.
It very old sport and very sentimental to a Tamilan.

Jallikattu is not just a sport, it's a centuries old tradition to preserve native breeds. Mainly Bos inidcus bulls are breed for Jallikattu, and it is an important ceremony for these bulls. After they are well-feed, and trained, they participate in the sport and depending on their performance in Jallikattu, they are picked for mating with cows, the breed lives on. Usually jallikattu bulls possess high producing healthy and strong genes so they are breed with traditional 'Naatu Pasu' (indigenous or native cow ) which is the indigenous breed of cows such as Ongole, kangeyam, Umbalacheri, and Kanchipuram breed that provides quality milk A2 variety. Gir, Sahiwal, and Rathi are also known to produce A2 milk. Also, when native bulls mate with pure breed cows, the cows give A2 milk, which is less in quantity but is full of nutrients, easy to digest for those who are lactose intolerant and allergy-free for kids. If don't understand it . search in Google what is a1 and a2 milk variety and its benefits .

It's a very ancient tradition. All the bulls r from ancient breed .It's a singn of " Bravery to win a girl " in ancient times. Also ,the bulls r very well taken care off. This is an annul event where all the Animal which r huge part of Agriculture r honoured ,protected. And native breeds r protected this way. Anyone who brings the bull down to the ground r the winner. Now days ppl win cash and other household articles. But ancient Tamil literature praises them as qualified to fight in any battle field with bare hands.😊 Tamils who raise these bulls take care of them as their own family member. It is actually not bull taming but bull embracing festival.. Who embrace (hug the horne) the bull for atleast 30 seconds or more will be the winner in that single battle.. Normally bulls don't easily allow people to hug.. That too in that huge crowd, its too hard to embrace.. Many rules are there.. Only one should hug at a time.. If no one hugs, the bull will be the winner.. As per the traditional belief, winning bulls will be used for reproduction while the winning guys use this opportunity to prove their braveness and impress girls for marriage..

This is part of biggest festival in Tamil Nadu, we call "Thai Pongal", that we are celebrating for the next 4 days. The time we pay respect to nature
for the harvesting & allow bulls (integral part of harvest) to play with its all mighty with human. If you had chance to visit Tamil Nadu, around mid of January, try to see this festival game.
Not as sports, that's why men are not even allowed to ware any protection, notice the people are in barefoot too, that the sign of respect, as in most culture, while praying people will be barefoot. And by rule only one person is allowed to tackle the bull at a time, but out of chaos & men competing each other's turn to attend the bull, you may see more person over the bull temporarily.
Rule is grasp the bull for 10 sec(colloquially we say "show your affection by hugging") or ride away the bull off the arena, so other bulls can be released. Sometimes when the bull is completely confused and not leaving the arena, then armature men will try to rope the bull to show the exit way out of arena.
As it is not a sports, the player are not paid, expect just on-the-day prize money, and never been trained or nurtured for health. In contrast, in fact the bulls are highly trained & specially nurtured & groomed all over the year. That's the way to keep the bull for breading. But those player usually discouraged by the family not to take part & never given special nurturement even on that day.
Remember the play will be for the whole day with 100s of bulls entering arena one by one, and those brave men will have to maintain their stamina & agility. Most of the time they take many breaks in between, but still its like a fully energy loaded bull & exhausted men.
If you notice the bull here in Tamil Nadu, the horn are perfectly shaped to point in front of its head, which is not the case with other bull breads we can see in Spain bull(horn are wide apart) and in US Rodeo bulls bread(horns are very short & curved back). In that sense I feel it is even more dangerous to tackle the bull, as its horn is in perfect position to defend or attack.
