Big, Angry Keramas - 18 April 2019

- The forecast for the biggest swell of the year was a raging success, thanks Magicseaweed, Surfline etc..
There was no waiting around for the swell to fill in with big heavy lines already hammering Bali's East coast first thing in the morning. The surf cam was grainy in the early light, but it was obvious that the new swell was here and it was straight and organised.
What I arrived to was a very different looking Keramas to what I'm used to seeing. Not a single air reverse in sight. Not many turns at all for that matter. Survival was a priority for most, but there were a few guys drawing some aggressive lines and plenty of big pits were pulled into.

Great videos...love that there's no music except the waves and some voices...and I like watching people paddling out , caught inside , trying to get out , wipeouts....the whole reality of a surf session...great work and keep it up 👍

Shheeeesh. That lineup is ridiculous. Usually spots like that thin out heavily with conditions like that. The surfers in Bali are more dangerous than any of the bigger swells.

Yeah, I was out pupukea once, duck dived as deep as I could and the wave still slammed my head on my board, my teeth went right thru my lip. Stitches afterwards.

I suppose that having a channel is why the crowd was that thick.
Lots of detritus in the water too.
There's a competition for Japanese pros about to kick off, so they were all out there free surfing. I wouldn't expect such a thick crowd on a day like this.
I'd love to see more vids of you just driving around. Bali is such an interesting place

This is a weird question. I've swum but never surfed yet I ride a skateboard slalom more than tricks, goofy foot n can only turn left, will I ever be able to learn how to surf. N don't hate me cause I love ur wavez...
@@starzbloom2454 Having a skateboarding background is probably going to help a bit. To get to even an average level takes years, but if you really enjoy it you'll get there.

@@starzbloom2454 That's just going to have to be trial and error. I have a friend who couldn't surf lefts for years, then he spent some time at a few left handers and he eventually figured it out.

Man, sweet waves but those locals gotta be polite as hell letting that lineup get so jammed... not in South America, somebody would've paddled out with a machete for discipline lol

It was a day before a surf comp so it was particularly crowded.
Yeah coz without tourism those locals would not be able to afford surfboards. Would be stupid to bite the hand that feeds you.

Man, that crowd, unbelievable. And to think that only a few hours later, and hours drive away, I was surfing solid 8 foot + perfection with only 4 others out.

on the 18th I dive to Nusa Penida, in the middle of the trip I saw a big wave at 9am
Kind of day someone gets killed. Just the critical take off, the very crowded conditions, the slamming shore break, doesn't even come close to resembling and nice surfing vacation.
My last surf months ago i crased the riff a bit)
anyway....i love keramas surf and hallo to keramas camping ground ppl....especialy for me best place ever.

Did that first crew make it out, the japanese looking guys and girl in white? Looks like wave selection was very important, lots of average rides and the odd bomb in between. But that crowd😣
its the kind of thing that would be of real interest you'd think, but 99% of all surf vids edit out paddle outs, sets approaching, paddle in's ( to the wave ) even pop ups half the time - I tend to just switch off after a few mins

This is still essentially a storm with lots of fairly heavy wind gusts and boiling rogue sets
It's a rather rare occasion when swells of upwards of 6.5 feet line up clear and glassy in these here parts of the world
4.5 to 5.5 ft forecasts, when matched with the textbook definition of those heights IRL are the optimal size for perfect surfing conditions in Bali
So that's why it was solid 8 foot plus and perfect where I was surfing on another part of the island on this same day?
Yep, it was a proper ground swell, just the local winds having the final call on conditions.
Gotta wonder what Nusa Dua was looking like this day
