- "Peg"
I've seen your picture
Your name in lights above it
This is your big debut
It's like a dream come true
So won't you smile for the camera
I know they're gonna love it, Peg.
I like your pin shot
I keep it with your letter
Done up in blueprint blue
It sure looks good on you
And when you smile for the camera
I know I'll love you better
Peg
It will come back to you
Peg
It will come back to you
Then the shutter falls
You see it all in 3-D
It's your favorite foreign movie
I like your pin shot
I keep it with your letter
Done up in blueprint blue
It sure looks good on you
And when you smile for the camera
I know I'll love you better
Peg
It will come back to you
Peg
It will come back to you
Then the shutter falls
You see all in 3D
It's your favorite foreign movie
Then the shutter falls
You see all in 3D
It's your favorite foreign movie
Then the shutter falls
You see all in 3D
It's your favorite foreign movie

Steely Dan's ability to achieve musical perfection so consistently was uncanny. Top shelf song writing and arrangements.
Trevor.
I totally agree. The production on their tracks is superb.
Plus with the best session musicians around they can't go wrong.
This is close to 40 years old and it still sounds fantastic.
Just wonder how many of todays music will still be played
40 years from now?
I'm not sure there is anything uncanny about it because they absolutely demanded it. Perfection or nothing is how they rolled from what I've read.
Steely Dan is also among the few groups that have never had their SOUND duplicated. Those boys were just, flat mean!!!!!
Everything is a piece of cake after the first half million hours of concentration, effort, and determination.
@@85geoffm Donald Fagen and Walter Becker insisted.. As it should be...
I am a 30 year bass guitarist and this is one of my favorite bass lines throughout any song I have ever heard. Just so groovin' bass by Chuck Rainey, just so amazing!
Yes Sir!
I literally listened to this song 20,000 times and I can listen 50.000 more…..best song of the seventies
Literally, one of the greatest tracks ever recorded. Just a beautifully arranged piece of music. Absolutely perfect.
Fax one of the best 80’s songs and that’s saying something because I wasn’t even born then
@@yeti752 I was born a little later but you also should check out some of their other music as well but to me this is one of my favorites by Steely Dan 👍
Correct
No argument here 👌🏾
I absolutely agree, one of the best tracks ever recorded...❤❤❤❤
I typed in Peg isolated tracks.....McDonald's vocals with layering was unbelievable. There was so much going on.
You Can Definitely Hear Michael's Voice Over Everyone! Was This Before He Went To The Doobies? 🤔
I throw this on whenever I’m slightly down. Phenomenal!
DEFINITELY ONE OF THIER BEST SONGS OF ALL TIME.
The musical talent on these gentlemen….
Who's still listening to this 70's Classic in 2024?
Me.. fr fr.. July 2024. New Zealand. So classy groovy.. classic. Love melody. Gets me happy.. bless yall. 😊❤
I was younger than 5 years old, but I remember this as a like 2 year old.
❤❤❤❤❤Never gets old!
One of the most cooking tracks ever made. As a musician, it has everything I want. Aja as an album is unsurpassed.
Ikr best cooking track ever
So true. Amazing and I don't throw that word around like so many people. With a hi fidelity turntable and sound setup, it's mind blowing.
This is the perfect song
This is a *perfect* song. When it first came out, it was my favorite song as a 12-year-old, and I still _never_ tire of it. The best pop songs are a blend of familiarity and surprise, and "Peg" has the perfect balance of both. When you first hear the chromatic descent of the intro, you don't know where it's going to stop, and when it does stop, it goes to what's nothing more than a blues progression with the simple yet clever idea of preceding each chord of the blues progression with it's relative IV chord -- it's just genius.
Writing a pop song that can stand the test of time (44 years and counting!) is no small feat. Donald and Walter (and the amazing studio musicians) hit it _way_ out of the park with this one.
This was one of my favorite albums of the late 70's,just great music 🎵 fantastic band
There will never be another band that can produce this kind of sound.
No. Not ever.
Donald Fagen and Walter Becker strove for perfection in the studio which made their music sound so naturally beautiful.
never is a very long time. There will be another band that will be as good. You just might not be alive to hear it though.
Still listening to this in 2023 just heard it played the local Tescos
Dont you just hate it when that happens.........
The Michael McDonald layered harmony background during the chorus is outstanding. The bass guitar is excellent. I don't want to overlook Fagan's vocals. Saw the "Classic Album" segment on AXStv, last Wed and made me appreciate this album more then I did as a kid.
My absolute favourite Steely Dan track I love 99% of them but this is the best Michael McDonald's vocals are insane.
The whole arrangement is flawless ! Steely Dan 4 life ..
No question, one of the greatest songs of all time.
This song along with a few others from the 70's takes my breath away. I get caught in this nostalgic feeling and transported back in time to my youth and literally forget to breath.
I actually died a few times when Gaucho & Aja first dropped. I still go under on a good listening night.... depending on the "product" available as I listen.
Amen!!! Weather starts warming up put this on you get to feeling yourself ...it takes you to a different time
Literally…
one of my favorites Cant get enough of this very addictive song
Check out "A Steely Dan Bedtime Story" on the first "Do it Again" video on UA-cam in the newest comments.
Does anyone hear the genius Michael McDonald doing background vocals? He's amazing. Love the song too. Awesome quality!!
All in 3D...foreign movie
at2sher Until you said that, I didn't notice he was singing on this.
It's kind of weird but if you look up Michael McDonald background vocals on "Ped" you can hear them, but it sounds like merged tracking. But it's still cool. Check it out :)!!
Mattes Cog He made it seem flawless, like it was done on the 1st take. Feels like they said, "Perfect, record that and on to the next masterpiece!"
Every time I'd listen to the song I'd always thing wow that high Peg sounds like Michael McDonald. I can't anyone else hitting that note so I did look it up and sure enough and yes I image the backtracks were very complex the way the voices (including his) weave in and out of the chorus.
PEG is my absolute favorite song by Steely Dan; it is part of the sounds-track of my youth.
Thanks for posting this.
green earings and josie are also excellent MJ
and the most complex,,,
+Mustafa. I would go with Haitian divorce for my fave track but I love this one too.
TOTALLY... my fave too!
@siniastz great for my Autistic brain ;)
i was a child of the 70's. and this music use to come on the radio 70's & 80's. think about that.. just the musicality.. A+.. salute steely dan
That guitar solo gets me everytime.
Mustafa Jackson MANNNN same! Just incredible
Its fits so perfectly
Mustafa Jackson every time absolutely perfect and loosey-goosey
Did Walt Becker play the solo on this cut? I know these guys were perfectionists and had someone "better" play a lot of guitar parts, including solos, on their albums. It sounds like Jon Herrington to me, but I really don't know.
i thought it was Jay Graydon.
Forty so years later I know I love this song better ❤
The rhythm section on this track is just ridiculously good. What a groove.
This has always been one of my main songs I love this from 9years old I'm 55 now still listening
L'un des plus grands groupes ! L'une des meilleures chansons ! Génial ❤
One of the GREATEST songs ever made!!!
Listening on an iPhone, the production is so good I can smell the guitar.
This right here!!! I love this song so much!!
Bassist, Chuck Rainey!👍🏾🎸💙💯
Josie and Peg still two of the songs I always play before the movie in my theaters. They seem to be timeless audience faves even after 30+ years in the business.
rest in peace Walter. Thanks for the music.
melodymakermark rest in paradise Walter soul brother
Love his guitar playing. Hate his driving.
@MrSlantwise ah!!! I like to drive myself
melodymakermark Find gold once, like here
After all these years and hundreds of listening their records I still shiver when I hear this song. 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
Me too!
I liked Steely Dan when I was young (turned 16 in 1978). Now they are amongst my all time favorites. Sheer perfection.
I love all the complex chords and jazzy key changes. This song is criminally short in length!!! And let's not forget Michael McDonalds beautiful close harmonies, screaming guitar solo from Graydon and Marottas more complex than it appears on the surface drum groove!
all that plus a fantastic bass line...
Mmmmmmm McDonalds
The song is amazing in any era. I'm a Progressive/Metal fan but this song, as well as many of their others, always reach me. Also being someone that plays guitar and sings this songs complexity is beautiful to me.
I much prefer McDonald on this as opposed to Bad Sneakers, which is not any fault of his - he's tremendous - has more to do with my preference for the construct of the song.
InflatablePlane yeah, I woke up with this morning with the chord they sing on the word "Peeeeeeeeeg"..that high note Michael McDonald sings during the word Peg. Its kind of hilarious, but in a very sophisticated way..
Legendary 💎
I think alot of todays' youth TOTALLY MISSED OUT on this Era of Great Music.....Especially STEELY DAN.
Donald Fagen and Walter Becker could never be replicated.
The recording of this entire album is just absolute PERFECTION!!!
Whenever I hear "Peg," I just wanna get up and boogie! That sets my dogs off, and they begin howling. What a mess! ha ha ha. Love this tune!
Your dogs have excellent taste in music.
HaHa!!😊
How can you not feel happy when listening to this gem??
bass player really rocking it wow top music and super fine session musicians !
Such a great piece of music. Makes me think of my beautiful friend. Peggy
It almost makes me sad to listen to... music like this might not be created at this scale or skill level ever again.
unfortunately, that may be true..
Very true
Granted. However, I've had a lot of fun listening to some of Big Big Train songs, they may not be at the level of Steely Dan, but their songs ooze quality.
You obviously don't listen to much jazz.
You are correct. It never will. There won't be anyone that close to perfection. RIP Walter Becker. You are truly missed by many.
Jay Graydon is off the charts with that guitar.Classic.
I worship this
Peg is bliss. Simple clear joy.
Such Memories..... I was 17....my girlfriend bought me this album......Awesome!!!
THE best album to come from Steely Dan! Walter Becker, yo since of blues was badddd!!!!
This is for my beautiful best friend of twenty six years she was a massive fan of these guys .I lost her four years ago will never get over of but smile every time I hear this and how much she loved them 💜
A tune of near perfection that i have played over and over in my lifetime and will continue to play
This is my 5 month olds favorite song. She will be screaming her head off we turn on Peg and she stops mid cry and starts smiling. Its really quite funny 😄. I love Steely Dan so looks like it runs in the family.
...its 4:30am in the UK, still haven't slept, just listening to old tunes from 70s/80s...🙄 THANK GOD FOR UA-cam!! 😉😂....👏🏽👏🏽👍🏽🖤
Would you say that this is your favorite Steely Dan song?
What you been taking 👀
Like the frosty outside of a chilled mug of your favorite drink, so cool.
RIP Walter Becker.................Steely Dan on heavy rotation all day
1977 11 years old and this was my jam, I use to say Heyyyyy it will come back to you 🎶🎶🎶 ❤ I didn't know they were saying Peg lol
I was 9 and I thought they were saying "Heyyyy" too.
Me too 🤗😎🤗
I think we ALL did lol
I was 6, and yeah... same thing. My dad was not an SD fan...so no album to drool over.
I just turned 13 yrs old in 1978 when I heard Peg for the 1st time and was hooked
My God, what some bass guitar!
Chuck Rainey at work here. Love his thumb slap!
drubedo Yeah man, they did a great job layering all the instrumentation. The bass is exceptional, adding the solid foundation while at the same time laying in some sneaky grooves that still maintain the flow and don't detract from the feel.
Undersung masterpiece. No doubt.
drubedo chuck Rainey dammitt
Yes I heard there were notes sneaked in amazing playing glad he in did it !!!
I didnt discover this band until i was in my late 20's I was hooked I met a guy in Belsize Park he needed a singer gave me a demo and left this on the other side..... just like an invisible gift
❤ way cool.
Relaxing & soothin, traveling music..
Love this here..
Greatest album ever recorded and arguably my favourite song of all time. Pure genius at work here.
this, and In the Court of the Crimson King by King Crimson.... greatest albums of all time. for sure.
How can you possibly pick a greatest album ever recorded? That's a very narrow view of music. Variety is the spice of life.
@@stretch54 yes but everyone is allowed a personal favorite and an opinion
@@gunnerglory He didn't say it was the greatest album ever recorded 'in his opinion'.
@@eddy71454 did he have to? The sentence implies heavily that it's his opinion and not the verified Oracle decision maker of all music ever.
One of the greatest albums. Almost every tune was a hit! Great crusin' or kick back to.
"Peg" is one for the ages. RIP Walter Becker.
Sometimes I just listen to Michael Macdonald sing "Peg".
Chuck Rainey's bass is absolutely perfect. Never leaves the pocket, but is so funky. I don't think it could be done any better.
Now this,.....is rhythm. An elite eargasm🔊🔊🔊🔊🎶🎺🎷📻🎶🎹🎺🕪🕪🕪🎤🎛🎛🎛🎸💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖
26 years old, my parents introduced me to legends like Steely Dan throughout my Childhood. Through the years this is still one of my all-time favorite songs, just absolutely does not get old!
Love, love, love this song!
LOVELOVELOVE!!!!
RIP Walter Becker. Great Song. Love Steely Dan.
Aja is still a great album!
Ruben Delgadillo one of the best ever!!
Greatness can never stop being GREAT! It transcends time.
Steely Dan/King Crimson fan? you sir have great taste.
I hear your amazing guitar licks Walter. When I was eleven ... I jumped around in the basement listening to this tune. You and Don Fagen Impacted my life. You'll always be with us. Thanks! RIP
It is an amazing song. Becker doesn't play on this tune though.
Sorry Richard Walter is not playing guitar on this.
That was jay on the solo but becker was no slouch.R.I.P MR BECKER
Brilliant piece of music. Perfectly crafted and executed.
Quite correct.
They themselves said they weren't looking for perfection: just the best that they could do....which to us, is perfection.
I was 13 years old when I first heard Steely Dan. Fell in love with them. Smoked weed n put this album on. Good times. Awesome music. Will always be my favorite. ❤️❤️❤️
this is my jam vocals are tight
Masterpiece!
Crazy how there were many guitar solos recorded in the studio for this song. This was the last one made before they picked it at the last minute. The soloist didn't even know they picked it until it played on the radio. So glad they went with this one.
Thanks for all the great tunes RIP Mr.Becker
Mirror, I was given this cassette tape at summer camp. At the time, 1978 Panasonic had a player that was state of the art. Cassette, it was blue if I recall. Polarizing memories that music helps keep with us for a lifetime!
Great memories - thanks for sharing ! :)
mirrorro77 Welcome ++
this song is very groovy, mean bassline 🕺🕺
The drumbeat here, is like, coming from another galaxy.
This is what I call a perfect song. Nobody in this world can produce this kind of song. It’s just absolute perfection.
This is why Rick Marotta is my favorite drummer
He is great. Would you say that this is your favorite Steely Dan song?
One of the greatest legacy hip hop groups sampled this song to great effect. De La Soul. They knew this song had layers.
Read an interview where they said their parent’s music collection influenced them. Three feet high and rising is still one of the greatest. ❤ I love them and I love the Dan ❤
Can't forget that the criminally underrated Prince Paul was their producer.
One if the great things about having a big brother 10 years you're senior in the early 70's was "" me 13 yrs "" him "" 23 "" Him taking his little bro too see Steely Dan, to mention just the dozen of other iconic rick bands of that era as well .. Zappa was my favorite !!!!
😪😪😓😫😫😫😫....never again. These days are gone. I'm so heartbroken. I was a little kid. 1970s music and times were the best ever.
Steely Dan, one of the most complex, talented and mesmerizing bands of all-time.
Perfection.my favourite band of them all,and I'm ENGLISH !
The Steely Dan invasion of England.
Rest in heaven to one of the architects of good sound
3 feet high and rising I love the Dan and de la soul 😍❤❤❤
A masterpiece!
Consistent excellence. I like every album they ever did and, in fact, they are the only (contemporary) group, on whose albums I can listen to every song. RIP Mr. Becker. Your absence is already being felt.
Classic and it will come back to you, how 'bout that !!!!!
the ultimate "geek" rock,
perfectionists to the extreme.
Musical genius.
This is the definition of tight!
this is one of a kind songwrititing
This album is super amazing I discovered this song on San Diego jazz station back in 2011 and I just been a Steely fan ever since.
The first time I heard them was in 1972 on an am radio station. I was nine.
