I am an older gentleman, listening to music throughout my life. Aldous is a young artist who completely fascinates me. She had me from the first moment as I watched the video Bliss, knowing exactly what she was doing--drawing from the film Apocalypse Now. The scene meant a lot to me as a teenager in the 70s. Now this song, I am pleasantly reminded of the under appreciated songwriter Harry Nilsson, specifically his album 'The Point'. I remember checking the album out from our local library as a kid. I loved it. I still do.

Ima fan of her as well and will look up Harry Nilsson as per your coment. Didnt he run around with Lennon back in the day? Looking foward to new music exploration. Thanx..

Connecting Aldous to The Point is charming. Another older gentleman who knew the kid-capturing genius of Me and My Arrow.

Until he was recently in the spotlight in "The Worst Person in the World", I wasn't aware of how many good songs (some I already knew) he had written. And I can totally see the similarity here

Her hypnotic allure leaves me speechless. It is not possible to adequately describe the experiential exoticness of the one, only and utterly astounding Aldous Harding. Maybe.

This song presents the painter entering her atelier, pulling open a curtain and testing out her brushes, her palette...

What a awesome thing to have an artist force me to relive a time when I learned how important music is and how it felt to understand what the song means to me. Your my new Elvis Costello.

    comfortably avant-garde
My ears fell into order when the words came in, bringing order to the marching melody like gravity to ripples in water.
Ardently I read the lyrics and in it I see a longing for something bigger than any hand.
Remembering the title, I think of all the things I still want.
    Great song and great album!

There's no other songwriter right now more exciting than Aldous Harding. She's doing astounding work that I don't think is getting the level of attention it truly deserves (and honestly, that's probably a good thing as it affords her a particular space to do what she wants without enormous pressure). What I adore about her music is that she's not doing work bathed in nostalgia (meaning, some other artists in the "indie" scene, for lack of a better term, seem obsessed with re-capturing the 70's and 80's); her sound is entirely her own. There are influences, but more than anyone else, she has her own voice - and she has a gift for MELODY, which so many songwriters seem to have forgotten about. This album is just a masterpiece. I expect her next record to be totally different from this, if she's in another headspace with it and that's fine. Whatever she does, I'm a fan for life.

Wow! This was a huge slap in the face. A slap handed to me by a flying wooly blue whale with fins oozing with rhododendron honey and confortable 80's blankets while it rains outside. Life is such a wonderful miracle.
Right now i'm in my unfinished straw and clay house, in the south of Portugal. The straw walls are covered with plastic because there is a storm going on right now. Lightning, thunder and water that appears to be falling from the sky. All the empty windows are covered with the plastic so i feel like i'm in a cave. Because i'm using recycled outdoor canvas there is this strange huge accordionist staring at me - he's printed in the outdoor canvas for some summer festival but summer is gone already.
Of course i drew rotten eyes and black teeth on the accordionist dude so he looks even more surreal. I just wish the dude - the real dude, the accordionist, wherever he is right now - could borrow the vision of the printed dude for a second, and also listen to Miss Harding playing, just for a few minutes. His intelect would have trouble digesting it all.
There are wet clothes and blankets hanging all around. Just one lamp. Strange drawings everywhere and a dog skull on the empty window sill. Sometimes i peak into the unfinished floor - it's a stilted house. I fed the wild cats and they found refuge under my house, right over the rockwool. You should always wear a mask when working with rockwool but the cats don't give a damn, they just make their paw kneeding ritual and curl over it and purr.
I set my broken tent on top of the mezzanine because my love is arachnophobic and there are spiders all around. But my love is far away. We normally spend two weeks without seeing each other because i have this house to build and she has theather costumes to finish. Distance could suck, but distance is actually a wonderful way to be reminded of everything we love about our love. Also, now i’ll go draw like a motherfucker because i want to make beautiful things for my love’s eyes to feast when we meet again. Life as an avalanche of sweet surprises.
Why am i writing this on the comment section of a youtube video? Because, it’s a youtube diary thing i do sometimes. In ten years time someone will like this comment and i’ll be magically transported to this moment of my life. These are tough times. No more money, practically no job, a house to build, a dying car, an injured gallbladder that i can’t afford to address right now. But, there’s love and good friends around, a veggie garden, cats purring under the house and the fire of human imagination burning, always burning. And this album. All is so cool. Hope all is cool with everyone else.
Thank you, Miss Harding. You’re welcome to drop by anytime.

i like this song, there is a lot going on and it kind of builds in construction as the song moves on. aldous is a work in progress and is hard to define and yet there seems to be a lot of reference points, which great artists seem to embrace. the kinks, hunky dory, o- superman et al. can't wait to see her live, righto mod paul.

Cut it up, put it in my hand
You've become my joy you understand
Got a little colour in the pan
    I love it
    Hands on heels
    A way of life, philosophy
    Ennui
Can see no point to send to me
    Up in the medley
Waste of time, they don't care the least for me
    Seem miles away
    Come back
Come back and leave it in the right place
    Come back
Come back and leave it in the right place
    Hands on heels
    A way of life, philosophy
    Lick my instep
I miss the funk it leaves on me
    I have the energy
No one look' and a canny fucking fill
    Don't lie to me
    Come back
Come back and leave it in the right place
    Come back
Come back and leave it in the right place
    Come back
Come back and leave it in the right place
