I am a 71 year old Hippie who has loved music my whole life and I now never start my day without my coffee, Ibuprofen, and La and Chi. all I have to say is:"You guys GET IT!"...Jack
I can relate!!!
Me too! 70 here:.love these guys
@@suesebree8670 !
So true! 69 yr old hippie here.
69 and me too.
Tommy Johnston on lead here....a MUST listen is Blackwater with Pat Simmons on lead! They were amazing before MM and amazing after. Enjoy! Thanks guys
I second Blackwater, it’s a banger.
I doubt Michael MacDonald could have done Black Water better in any manner. It's perfect with Tommy Johnston!
much better before MM !
The Doobies rule and this is my favorite of all the great music that have put out
"Another Park, Another Sunday" is another fantastic song by the earlier Doobie Brothers..
To me, this is their anthem...when they play it in concerts it is so uplifting with EVERYONE standing and singing can't get nothing but a good feeling all over!!
This is the song that started it all. In the summer of 1971 I think. I was going in to my freshman year of High School. Every song, takes you back to a certain time in your life. Music is a time machine.
Thanks guys
I remember when my entire family would pack into the old station wagon to go on vacation and all of us would sing every word of Black Water and Listen to the Music!❤❤
From California. You can hear the banjo as well in this song. They can play any genre and make it their own. I prefer the pre-Michael McDonald days, but I don't dislike their music when he came on board, it just necessarily took on a Steely Dan vibe. The Doobie brothers and Steely Dan have a lot of interconnections musician wise.
Wasn't it Jeff Skunk Baxter, another Steely Dan alumnus, who suggested Michael McDonald to the Doobies?
@@reddoxx4754
Yes. AND THE DOOBIE BROTHERS INVITED MCDONALD TO JOIN THE BAND TO REPLACE JOHNSTON.
He didn't just barge into the Doobie Bros studio one day and proclaim "Boys, I'm TAKING OVER LEAD VOCALS!!" as so many infantile whining dweebs are portraying it as, wetting their knickers and getting their panties all in a twist.
As of 19 years old the 70s had the best music hands down 🙌
I love Tiran Porter's bassline in this tune.
In every tune!
Just saw them last week; they still sound great. An all-time super American band.
Isn't it great that so many of these bands and artists are still touring and performing well? I love that!
I went to their farewell tour concert twice. Once in 84 and once in 85. Glad they are still on that tour. They need to come back to OKC.
The Michael McDonald injection was simply adding gas to a bonfire that had been burning fir some time. Doobies have put out tons of great tunes. One of the all time best bands. Go deep, young men. The hole is deep and wide.
The Doobies were very different when they started out. Amazing musicians, writers. I prefer the older tunes. I was just listening to "Without You" from "Captain and Me." Interesting that they were from San Jose, CA, with the smooth country vibes in a lot of their tunes. 2 drummers in this amazing band (actually 3 for a spell!)
I listened to them as a teenager in San Jose but I forgot that's where they started.
I started to remember all the agriculture in the area (ex. San Juaquin valley) and it's no wonder the DBs had the country influence. @@324cmac
The Captain & Me is a masterpiece. HOF material all by itself...
I believe "Without You" was the flip side of the "Long Train Runnin"" 45 rpm single on Warner Bros. Records which I still possess. I played both songs equally. I preferred the band before MM.
@@tommarin3468 Hey Tom, Agree! So many hits, a lot of the great tunes are often overlooked, Road Angel, Eyes of Silver, Another Park, Another Sunday......It's cool that your moniker is "Tommy Chong" meets "Cheech Marin." 👍👍
I prefer the pre MM days also. The entire "Captain and Me" album is awesome!
South City Midnight Lady is probably their prettiest song. Beautiful pedal steel played by Jeff Baxter of Steely Dan fame and Pat Simmons takes the lead vocals with his beautiful voice. A lovely song.
I agree. I've been recommending that and Dark Eyed Cajun Woman every chance I get.
Check out ‘Black Water’ for a cool, southern soul acoustic with fiddle. Huge hit.
The Doobies were originally from the South Bay... San Jose to Santa Cruz hills.
A perfect song
The 70s were amazing. I grew up listening to this great music. I remember hearing this song playing on the radio in the kitchen and Me and my Mom would dance to it. ❤❤❤❤❤
A timeless classic that still sounds fresh today
Im 77 & more great music came out in the 70's.
I saw them when I was a kid back in the mid 70s. The wife and I just saw them a couple months ago. They are still amazing!
Hey guys. With the passing of Robbie Robertson today can you listen to his song "Showdown at Big Sky" off his EPIC solo album. He was a founding member of the iconic The Band.
A great classic song by the Doobies, one of their biggest radio hits. San Jose - 1970 guys. 🔥
Are you from SJ? I am.
Best before Michael: "Take Me In Your Arms". Best after Michael: "How Do The Fools Survive". My memories of them are mostly before Michael. It's what I grew up with.
My first concert in '75. The Outlaws opened. I'd just missed Tom Johnston, he was out with an ulcer. But the Stampede album was my favorite back then. Neal's Fandango is one of my favorite songs from it.
This is my absolute favorite song EVER! In my entire 57 years, this has never failed to put me in a better mood after hearing it. If anyone ever asks me to show them (happy), I would play this song. Thanks for the reaction.
I would play Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey
What a great vocal liine "Gonna Dance the Blues Away"
Saw em twice well before Michael McDonald .
Did not disappoint .
Early Doobies = Gold Mine .
The flange descent was epic.
One of the Doobies best songs on my top list. Thank you for the review guys.
They're from San Jose...I was living there and going to amazing shows all around the Bay Area like Fillmore West and Winterland in SF, a lot of shows in Berkeley and even saw the Doobies open for Santana at the fairgrounds in San Jose. In that era the music seemed to be the driving force for everything! Love your channel guys
This may have been the first song I heard by the Doobies. It got released in 1972 when I was in college in San Jose, Ca. The band is actually from San Jose. I saw them perform in a small club called The Bodega right before they hit it big. During the intermission several of the band members wandered through the crowd and we got a chance to talk to them. Great reaction, guys. Take care.
I was in Middle School, oh man the groove. I had a very diverse middle school and everybody was jammin to the Doobies.
Another Park, another Sunday is another great song by them
Doobies just make me happy.
Great start to my day, La, Che and the Doobies! Thanks gents…love the head bobbin! Doobies are from San Jose..
That bass line sure does walk a fine line.
Pride of the South Bay... SanJose, CA pre- Silicon Valley as a kid, the only time we ever went to San Jose was for the Flea Market... I remember hearing garage bands in every neighborhood ...late 60's early 70's Doobies captured that feeling in my memories... the hair stood up on my arms the first time I heard that chorus! Nowadays this song gives old rockers like me happy tears.... Great reaction, thumbs up, thanks guys!
'Saw them "over the hill", in Santa Cruz. Outdoors, a bennett concert for Niel Young's ranch, if memory serves. Their music matched the times - magical. Thanks, DB's -
The San Jose Flea Market! What a great place. Canival atmosphere. Great memories.
Barryessa?? ( Sp 😂)
the bass line in this one hooks me in, every time.
Best reaction channel I've seen so far. You get right into the song without hesitation, your insights are right on, you don't pause and rewind 40 times in a song, and there isn't a need for an over-analysis of anything. You simply enjoy the music. Spot on - keep up the great work!
When they merged with former Steely Dan guys, Jeff Baxter and Mike McDonald, they updated their sound and proved they could be soulful. Tom Johnston came back and they returned to this sound. Both were relevant.
They do it all now! On tour you see Mike backing up Tom and vice versa. ❤
Nope. Imho, McDonald was not an upgrade.
They didn't really "merge" with Steely Dan. After the Pretzel Logic Tour in 1974, Fagen and Becker basically disbanded SD because they disliked touring and wanted to concentrate more on the studio process and move closer to jazzier records. Skunk had already guested on a few Doobies albums, and as a guitarist he wanted to keep touring etc so the Doobies made him a permanent member. McDonald had been singing backup vocals on SD's 74 tour, and then when Johnston had "issues" Skunk recommended him to come in as a lead vocalist/keyboards.
@kbrewski1 Spot on. I spent time with Skunk, and regatding his joining the Doobies, he said he left SD (he didn't ha e to leave --- he was a founding member of SD with Fagan and Becker. Skunk was not a guy brought in to play with SD, unlike other SD musicians. Skunk was as much a founding member as Becker and Fagan. People seem to either not know this or forget. Anyhow, Skunk left SD; it wasn't disbanded. He wanted to tour, not sit in a studio. So, he jumped in with his old buddies in the Doobies! After Skunk joined, he brought in Mcdonald when Johnston had some health issues.
You know a band is serious about music when they have dual drummers
April Wine wasn't too shabby themselves!
When I saw them in the 70s, they had 3 drummers. Middle drummer raised higher, others-one on each side. There were times when they played in complete sync- same hand gestures, same twirl of the sticks. Same beats. It was FASCINATING!! AND MEMORIBLE!! And the sound... extraordinary. 😁✌🏼
@@olly8
Wasn't one guy just on bongos? Not 3 drum kits.
Genesis, Allman Brothers, King Crimson, to name a few.
@@kbrewski1 Nope! 3 full sets of drums & drummers. You don't forget something that awesome ✌🏼
Another one of my favorite groups I am definitely a 70’s music lady
Thank you Doobie Brothers🇦🇺
My god I can remember hearing this on the radio for the first time! I’m not surprised it’s lasted the rest of time.
Hands down one of my favorite bands...you can't go wrong with the "Doob's" 😏 They had some really wonderful singers as well as fantastic musicians in the band. That's a combination that's hard to find with harmony bands, especially. Here another suggestion for one of their songs that features Patrick Simmons singing as lead vocal. "The Doobie Brothers - Black Water (Official Music Video)" This was fun thanks
Man, nice throwback to they days of 8-track tapes, bell bottoms and my Camaro SS. I have always enjoyed the Doobies.
" Taking It To The Streets "
Yes the Doobies were brilliant before, during & after Michael McDonald!
Double Entandre time…..I’m listening ❤️🎶❤️😎
This is feel good music. Takes me back to senior year of high school.
Great pick guys I mean how can you hate this song it gives off joyous vibes
I love all the Doobie Brothers lineup’s, great music from them all…
Iconic classic.
Tommy wrote this late 60's or so as a protest song. He saw race riots, anti war riots, war in S E Asia, war in the Middle East, political assassinations here and abroad. Listen to the lyrics - - what the people need is a way to make them smile it aint so hard to do if you now how ................. listen to the music
Cruisin smokin a doobie music in the early 70's..
Where are the Doobies from? They're local guys - they grew up in Santa Cruz mountains! Loma Prieta to be exact, way up there in the hills. They wrote a song about their beloved mountain home, it's called Neal's Fandango.
doobies are soul bro's
First saw the Doobies in late 72 or 73 at the Salt Palace in Salt Lake City. They were opening for Three Dog Night and nobody had ever heard of them. They blew the roof off the place and two weeks later Listen To The Music hit the airwaves.
Toulouse Street blew me away. Amazing songs on that LP. Good times, revisited.
They’re from San Jose ! I went to high school with Pat Simmons who wrote and sang their classic, “ Black Water”. That’s a southern rock MUST!!! He wrote it in high school!
He showed you the written song Black Water in HS? Why did they wait so long to record it? Pics or it didn't happen. 😂
My party band straight up!!!
A perfect song.
I remember hearing this on the school bus😮
I believe they are from San Jose. You might enjoy their song "Neal's Fandango," which mentions Santa Cruz and Loma Prieta.
This is a classic. This music lifts you spirit and soul. Thanks again for a great reaction fellas. Much appreciated.
Their finest song.
Tom Johnston is one of the most underrated song writer/guitarist of all time.
I was raised on this song….it was on the radio a lot in the 70s
The Captain and Me is a fantastic album
My favorite DB song.
The Isley Bros did a great cover of this song .
Michael McDonald was basically a studio musician before he joined the Doobies helping them to keep going when their main writer/singer left the band.
He was on Steely Dan's last live tour of the 70s in 1973/74. Not a bad place for a 21-22 year old to cut his teeth.
Thanks guys, great reaction! These guys were my first show at the age of about 13 or so. Pablo Cruz opened for them. Another pretty good band you guys should check out, although not on the level of the Doobies. Thanks again!
LOVE Pablo Cruise
Pablo Cruise is a kick (_I_) band!
My first concert, too. Don’t remember who opened for them 😂
Without You is major sound coming from your speakers by them.
San Jose, California! . Michael McDonald filled in after Tom left for personal reasons for a while. Sometimes I do concerts with everybody! Haven’t seen them once live in the Rodriguez, I am not kidding when I say, there’s no drop off!
Great Reaction, guys! Love the Doobies!
Great jam. Great musicians.
Thanks!
Titan Porter (backup & bass player) from Los Angeles. Most of the others are from San Jose CA.
Long Train Runnin’, Black Water are two of my other pre MM favorites.
They are very smooth and cool. I could really chill, listening to the music (no pun intended). You folks were right about the acoustic guitar adding to the music.
They were fantastic
Another absolute Classic....!
I'm sure you know "Blackwater"... But would like to hear it with you guys...!
Just saw the Doobies last night at the IL State Fair. Great show!
The images you get are of country settings in your head! Very unique!
Saw them live at the forum, new years ave 1978, 79. Eddie money opened for them. Both bands kicked ass. Glad you are liking the early stuff.
Class act. The Doobies had 5 albums and 8 Top 40 hits pre Michael MacDonald.
Feel good music
A timeless song/message. Rock on.
Great bass line by Tiran Porter!
They started as a biker-band in the Santa Cruz mountains but were formed in San Jose. Their version of "Jesus Is Just Alright" is more than just alright. "Another Park, Another Sunday", "South City Midnight Lady", "Ukiah". are also great songs that don't quite get as much mention as some of their other more popular tunes. Tom Johnston had some health issues for a year or two and had to step away from the band. He was very happy MM stepped in to "keep the train rolling" until he could return.
The bassist is great.
Best I can recall not a bad song on their first 3 albums
prime Doobies with Tommy driving the bus...
sad news about Robbie Robertson yesterday, maybe you guys could venture to check out some of his work with THE BAND
if ya haven't heard them i promise you won't forget them! Cheers
Smooth 🎙 🎵 🎶
I know this has nothing to do with this reaction. But I have sayRIP Robbie Robertson. Would love to some music from the Band. La and Che you should check out the group that changed the sound of music with Music From The Big Pink. You will not be disappointed.
You need to listen to the title track to this album, Toulouse Street. It'll give you an even greater appreciation for their music.
This album Toulouse Street, and the next three The Captain and Me, What Were Once Vices, and Stampede are flawless albums. You can listen to them all the way through and each song is great. Definitely a set y'all should add to your music collection.
I got to see them in concert a few weeks ago and they are still amazing both with and without Michael McDonald. Excellent band!
