    From California. You can hear the banjo as well in this song. They can play any genre and make it their own. I prefer the pre-Michael McDonald days, but I don't dislike their music when he came on board, it just necessarily took on a Steely Dan vibe. The Doobie brothers and Steely Dan have a lot of interconnections musician wise.

      Yes. AND THE DOOBIE BROTHERS INVITED MCDONALD TO JOIN THE BAND TO REPLACE JOHNSTON.
      He didn't just barge into the Doobie Bros studio one day and proclaim "Boys, I'm TAKING OVER LEAD VOCALS!!" as so many infantile whining dweebs are portraying it as, wetting their knickers and getting their panties all in a twist.

    The Doobies were very different when they started out. Amazing musicians, writers. I prefer the older tunes. I was just listening to "Without You" from "Captain and Me." Interesting that they were from San Jose, CA, with the smooth country vibes in a lot of their tunes. 2 drummers in this amazing band (actually 3 for a spell!)

    • @kbrewski1
      @kbrewski1 11 місяців тому +1

      They didn't really "merge" with Steely Dan. After the Pretzel Logic Tour in 1974, Fagen and Becker basically disbanded SD because they disliked touring and wanted to concentrate more on the studio process and move closer to jazzier records. Skunk had already guested on a few Doobies albums, and as a guitarist he wanted to keep touring etc so the Doobies made him a permanent member. McDonald had been singing backup vocals on SD's 74 tour, and then when Johnston had "issues" Skunk recommended him to come in as a lead vocalist/keyboards.

    • @LzCoda
      @LzCoda 10 місяців тому +2

      @kbrewski1 Spot on. I spent time with Skunk, and regatding his joining the Doobies, he said he left SD (he didn't ha e to leave --- he was a founding member of SD with Fagan and Becker. Skunk was not a guy brought in to play with SD, unlike other SD musicians. Skunk was as much a founding member as Becker and Fagan. People seem to either not know this or forget. Anyhow, Skunk left SD; it wasn't disbanded. He wanted to tour, not sit in a studio. So, he jumped in with his old buddies in the Doobies! After Skunk joined, he brought in Mcdonald when Johnston had some health issues.

    They are kind of like Van Halen when it comes to Michael McDonald and Sammy Hagar. Two different, yet very good sounds!!
    Rock on La and Chi. I really enjoy your reactions!!!👏👏

      Except the Doobie Brothers were twice as talented as Van Hagar.

    The groove of this band before Mike was amazing! Not to take anything away from post-Mike Doobies, but this iteration of the band is my favorite. This song, Long Train Runnin, Black Water, China Grove, Rockin Down the Highway, Jesus is Just Alright, and many others.

    This song always reminds me of my first dance lessons. They played this record, to get into the rhythm, by moving our hips. 😂❤

      If anything, I would call it their most overplayed tune.

    San Jose, California! . Michael McDonald filled in after Tom left for personal reasons for a while. Sometimes I do concerts with everybody! Haven’t seen them once live in the Rodriguez, I am not kidding when I say, there’s no drop off!
