Pretty good Dave. I've been trekking and reenacting for 40 years. There are a few things I would do or say differently...but you were basically spot on. I have aquired or made the most historically correct stuff I could research. In the period...wool was called "flannel". A sleeved waistcoat..( weskit dosent appear in venacular until LATE 1760s), was called a "flannel jacket". Wool leggings of english Stroud wool or flannel ..in red or blue...was the preffered legging of the eastern woodland tribes. They were sewn TIGHT to the leg using sinew and not removed. They literally WORE off. A fingerwoven wool garter..beaded and quilled, was the usual below the knee tie-off when used by an indian. Many accounts of white colonists adopting this form of "indian walking dress"..as coined by a very young 1750's George Washington or Christopher Gist. As I said...you did a good job explaining to the aspiring newbee..! I'm not critiquing your video...just embellishing..lol. I'm a stickler for authenticity as I have refined my handsewn gear over all the years. Trying to emulate as authentically as possible. But I am welcoming to all who try....always help...never hinder. Carry on soldier..
great videos.. sure wish you was back on cable tv thanks for the videos. I learn something new everytime I watch ya dave. I think a lot of people need to get outside and get back to the basics.
I often tuck my pants into my socks in the brush. Keeps bugs and tick out. This style makes sense in the woods and brush and also provides great ajility not snagging on sticks etc. I always wonder if this old fashion followed function rather than just simple fashion and i think it does
thank you Dave. verk intresting. i like the old stile and also to go light weight. i learn a lot from you and för exempel Ray Mears and som others who theaths very well. Mikael from Sweden
Folks, please understand that with youtube de-monetizing outdoors, shooting and survival channels such as this, it has become necessary to gain sponsorship for these videos. Good production values are not cheap. I basically have given up on having bells and whistles on my channel for this reason. I will tell you that Dave uses the products he advertises and they work very well. Duluth for instance is one of my favorite pack and bag companies and MANY will agree with that. To sum up: be nice, dave has to make a living too and these videos are free training that you have to pay for elsewhere.. its worth the extra time.
Hey , Dave . I've been watching your vids for a while now . they're great , but, they're not suited for NW Oklahoma . I've got a place right next to some public hunting . You're welcome to come down and shoot some videos . Feral pigs all year .
Transporting an invasive species like a Russian boar into Missouri? Are you fucking crazy, fat, lazy, stupid, rich, or what? But, like most Trump supporters, I'm sure you don't mind a Russian boar mingling in American Affairs at all.
Nah. Mr Urban responds with understandable frustration at a meaningless rant shoehorned into the comments section attached to an educational video allowing us a little window into the lives of the men who opened up America. Try to get on please and enjoy the content.
have you checked out the videos of a Young Man who goes by the UA-cam channel Nick post? young man is a breath of fresh air and does an outstanding job.
FOr those who want to learn more about the fur trade between 1810-1840, Terry C. Johnston wrote a 9 book series about the era. It's fiction but it is laced with a lot of real world research and really fun reading
I lucked out and was able to find an old OD green wool military sleeping bag at a Goodwill. Would that be more or less effective than just a blanket? The blanket would be more versatile, but which would be better for keeping you warm while you sleep?
Good info on the clothing. Dave have a question. I watched your beaver hide prep. Have you did a video On deer hide for use for Blanket or whatever? If so I missed it. Cliff
Hi Dave. Im re watching alot of your videos. I am really interested in the 1800s cival war era woodsman. I have seen your videos about the bush pot i even own one of yours, but i recently came across the "mucket" which seems to be a 1.5pint bush pot that soldiers used normaly made of tin. I am surprised they were not used by the woodsman/longrifleman, or that ive not seen you speak about them. Is there any reason? I think its funny that the design is now being produced and sold all over the internet in stainless and even titanium, but its not a new design at all.
And steel was really expensive until the Bessemer steel process was invented. Those knives wouldn't have been anywhere near an eighth of an inch thick, dude. It would have been more like a 16th of an inch thick.
Terribly disappointed to see any affiliation with John McCann & Survival Resources; I had a awful experience when dealing with John McCann & will never shop at SurvivalResources & advise others to take their business elsewhere. However, I've been a long time fan of Mr. C, subbed to SR Mag for years, & have made many successful purchases & interactions with the Pathfinder store & its employees!
You can't just drop a comment this general and try to steer others to your way of thinking. What does an "awful experience" mean? What happened? Did you try to work it out? What was the response? I have had only positive experiences with Survival Resources and would recommend them to anyone without hesitation. The bushcraft / survival community may have a great number of members, but the number of reliable vendors is very small. I truly feel that Survival Resources is one of those vendors. If you have something specific to gripe about, let us know. Otherwise let it go and keep it to yourself. Peace.
Say, Dave, how do you make those single leg pants that the Indians wore? How do you make the leather chamois that goes in your crotch? I think it's the flaps that are part of the chamois
That intro song sounds like something a guy whose daughter has a black baby, whose wife has a mobility scooter, and who claims that Israel is their greatest ally.
This was the golden age of wilderness outfitters XD

Wtf, why are there so many ads?
Good vid. Very informative
Video starts @2:50 after 2 minutes and 49 seconds of commercials
It would be nice if you would answer the questions that your fans are asking here!
Same with Self Reliance Outfitters...they never answer my emails!
Another great video, Dave. I really enjoy watching your videos. Just subscribed to the channel. I learn by watching.
Beautiful bone handle knife!

3 mins to get to the actual video is a little steep ...
The cost of free info. and entertainment. I'm cool with it.

swingintrees: Dafuq is this rant of yours all about?
exactly

@11:14 Man I hear that! My left ankle is murder sometimes and I think of them in the old days just sucking it up like Men.
have you checked out the videos of a Young Man who goes by the UA-cam channel Nick post? young man is a breath of fresh air and does an outstanding job.
I don't see how they kept from freezing to death with no more than they had

Do you think that buckskin frock coats we're very prevalent back in the 18th century?
I lucked out and was able to find an old OD green wool military sleeping bag at a Goodwill. Would that be more or less effective than just a blanket? The blanket would be more versatile, but which would be better for keeping you warm while you sleep?
Duluth just gave away your true age! :) You look pretty good for a 130!:)
Good info on the clothing. Dave have a question. I watched your beaver hide prep. Have you did a video On deer hide for use for Blanket or whatever? If so I missed it.

What are some good books to read about the frontiers man??
I wish I could delete comments missing the point of valuable education from an experienced teacher
And steel was really expensive until the Bessemer steel process was invented. Those knives wouldn't have been anywhere near an eighth of an inch thick, dude. It would have been more like a 16th of an inch thick.
Good stuff. Thanks for sharing. What's the name of the song ?
Dave can you recomend some titles I can buy that are written by frontiersmen , ive read woodcraft by George Washington Sears
If you did where did you buy these kinds of clothing?
Hi Dave
Was your bone handle knife made by ML?
Steve buckskinner 54 no, it was made by codi lundeen....😂. Just kidding, Dave knows what he's doing
What is (Altenburg ) 12:25
very interesting but the adds put me off.
Commercials suck... Trying to force feed viewers into horse crap we don't need. I'm here to learn people ! Not shop !!!!!!
you're getting great free information. to me, that's worth a few ads.
nice work and info thanks... ? the black hat... what style and where would you find it?

Possible that others have had good experiences with Mr. McCann.

I always liked your vids but not with these adverts!!
just skip em
This channel got millions of views 10 years ago, I guess the notoriety has worn off. Just goes to show, It's not what you know, but who you know.
Yeah the commercials outweigh the actual information. I'm done watching. It was fun.
Well, the Info. was free by the way.......
My time isn't free.
Well seeing as this was filmed for TV....the commercials are needed to help pay for the time slot.
Hey, my girlfriend from college in 1999 called, and she would like her capri pants back, Dave.
hurts me to see that cat in a trap. I love kitty's so its heartbreaking.
That intro song sounds like something a guy whose daughter has a black baby, whose wife has a mobility scooter, and who claims that Israel is their greatest ally.
Remember the U.S.S. Liberty!
2:20 - That's possibly the worst voice I've ever heard used in an advert. So much vocal fry I feel like I want to vomit.
