  • The pixco focal reducer is cheap, but is it good?
    In this video I show how the focal reducer performs with old vintage lenses (Minolta MD) in comparison to a normal adapter. I test the performance for photo and video and show some things you have to be aware of, when using such a device.
    Filmed with Panasonic G7 and Pansonic Leica 25mm F1.4 lens.

    TJ, I wanted to thank you for what is probably the most analytical video I have seen on speedboosters, and certainly on the Pixco. I have Pixco's FD > MFT adaptor and am generally very happy with it. I have to say I don't "feel" like it is quite as soft as your tests show. BUT, I say "feel" because I have yet to be that analytical about it. It is possible my unit is somewhat sharper, as I hear many more costly brands of boosters vary in quality control from one unit to another. As the least costly unit, I'm sure Pixco can vary as well. This makes me both interested to do some tests on mine, and look forward to seeing your expanded reviews (so yes, I subscribed!) Thanks again.

      Yes copy variance can make a difference. But since I am only a hobbyist I don't have the time or money to test multiple copies. If you look at the tests at lensrentals even the Leica branded Nocticron has quite huge differences between worst and best copies.

    Unfortunately, Metabones is always better at the edges than any of these cheaper speedboosters. I have both Metabones and Pixco and can confirm that while none of us like to pay the Metabones price, you do get better performance for the money. However, if shooting portrait, these cheap speedboosters can be a great choice, because in the center, the differences are much smaller there.

    This looks to be a very good series, as I also have acquired (one) vintage Minolta lens, an MC 50mm 1.4. I didn't notice the little protruding prong until you mentioned it, but I have the non-optical el cheapo adapter that I use to connect to my G9. My MC lens after about 2.8 is sharp across the field of view. I paid a little more, wanting a pristine example, I ordered from an eBay seller in Japan. So Tea Jay, are you going to test all your vintage Minolta lenses? That would be a very fun and interesting series. Thanks.

      Yeah, the old lenses often perform best stopped down 2 stops or more is also my experience. I will do sample footage videos on the lenses and for some maybe even more detailed review and comparison against native M43 lenses. But this may take a while.

    Thanks a lot for sharing. Is there any chance you got do a tutorial on how to file down the apeture stalk without damaging the lens? I have this adaptor and the viltrox ef one also. On the viltrox I can't seem to get my rokkor lenses to focus to infinity, regardless of how much I rotate the glass element🤷🏽‍♂️

      I used a rotary tool kit with a cutting wheel on the aperture pin. I think this is the fastest way. You could also use a grinding wheel to file it down. Just make shure to put tape at the back of the lens around the pin that none of the filings can get into the lens.

      @@TeaJayPhotography Hi, Thanks for your videos. My focal reducer has just arrived, but I need to file the aperture pins down on my md lens but don't have a rotary tool kit. Do you think its safe to use a normal file if am careful and if so is there a particular file i should go for?

    Just got my Pixco, so far it looks like my 50mm 1.4 MC Rokkor PG on my Panasonic GF1 works without modifying the pin, every other lens I have is stuck wide open. By any chance you encountered an MD/MC lens that didn't need the modification?

      Hi, so far only my new MD 50mm F1.4 didn't need the modification.

    The focal reducer probably introduces some field curvature. Did you try focusing on the corners with the focal reducer?

    • @TeaJayPhotography
      @TeaJayPhotography  3 роки тому

      Hello, that could be possible. I did not test it yet but will do so when doing the next test shots.

    • @TeaJayPhotography
      @TeaJayPhotography  3 роки тому

      So I tested this yesterday and the focal reducer indeed does introduce field curvature. When focusing on the upper left corner, all corners where sharp and the center was soft. So as long as you want some blurryness besides your subject, it is ok. But you can't get evenly sharp images for instance for landscape shots.

    I bought it. The machining is a bit rough, and I can only fit it to one of my M43 cameras. Too tight both at the camera end and at the lens end. Even that needed some work to remove some paint and metal with a file. Not recommended.

    Are there any alternatives?

    • @TeaJayPhotography

      The zhongyi lens turbo should be better but are about 150 to 190€. I got one Nikon F to m43 used very cheap that I will test but I don't have any Nikon lenses atm. Also since it's another mount I can't compare them directly.

      @@TeaJayPhotography Didnt know that was an option, I def trust Mitakon glass a little more than pixco, while the pixco is cheap i would rather not have all that softness. Thanks! :D

    • @TeaJayPhotography
      @TeaJayPhotography  3 роки тому

      Tested the Mitakon today with an Nikon 85mm F1.8 and have to say it is way better than the Pixco. Doesn't have the field curvate problem of the Pixco. Will probably do a video about both the lens and the Mitakon Lens Turbo.
