Yup, what the Godfather trilogy is, is "the tragedy of Michael Corleone". Tragedy in the classical sense that is. The guy who was forced to sacrifice his own hopes and dreams and become the monster he didn't want to be, and lost everything because of it. I think people are needlessly scared off of this movie. There really is nothing wrong with, it's a good movie. It just isn't on the god tier level of the previous two. That, plus the fact that Coppola did in fact agree to do it because he was in dire straits financially gave a lot of people a bad taste at the time. But as whole, I think it pays off to see all three.

The Godfather movies are great models for aspiring film writers. Rely on the classics that have stood strong for hundreds of years to write new screenplays. Coppola didn't want to make these films, but he needed the money and he could see the similarity between the novel to Shakespeare's King Lear. Part 3 relies the most on King Lear since all of the material from the novel worth showing was used up halfway through Part 2. As a result, Part 2 is more complex than Part 1 and Part 3 is the most complex film of all three. People who understand King Lear always love Part 3. People who don't understand King Lear are the same people who hate Part 3.

  • @erwinquiachon8054
    @erwinquiachon8054 23 дні тому +5

The incest is a reference to the Oedipal complex of King Lear. Lear's daughters married men who were like their father. Coppola's grandparents were first cousins, yet they produced healthy, hyper talented children and grandchildren who thrive today, while the Corleones failed miserably. That's why Coppola chose Sofia to represent both the Corleones and Coppolas, as a comparison of the two families. Sofia's real life success proves that her selection for that role was brilliantly correct. Part 3 was Coppolas best writing of all three films because it was ahead of its time. Coppola never wanted to be associated with the racist stereotypes of the mafia. He made that very clear in Part 3 by casting Sofia. Sofia dies in the film by the sins of the Corleones, but she continues to thrive in real life by the virtues of the Coppolas. Many people are only now starting to realize how smart Coppola's decisions in Part 3 are today.

She was instructed by her father to be herself for a reason. She represents both the Corleones and Coppolas so that her father could compare the two families in his final judgement. That's next level writing and artistic instincts. That seperates Coppola from most directors because the rest of them are not smart enough to imagine or achieve this level of artistic creativity and realism. He couldn't do this without Sofia. You can't have Winona Ryder or Madonna or any other actor representing the Coppolas as effectively or symbolically as Sofia.

Michael is a tragic figure. He never wanted the life. Tried desperately to avoid it. But in order to save his family (his father), which family is most important to him, he committed to it fully. His life went totally downhill and he lost his family. In the end, Mary’s death likely tore the family apart because it was Michael’s life which led to her death. Mary was not caught in the crossfire. The assassin targeted her to do the most pain to Michael. He prophetically told Vincent in the hospital “When they come, they come at what you love.”
Michael dies years later, old, and alone haunted by memories of the women who left him because of the family business.
Vincent took over as the new Don. There was plans of a Godfather 4 movie which centered around Vincent. But Mario Puzo died and Coppola didn’t want to continue without Mario’s help so the film plans were cancelled.

So the choices to try to become legitimate never really work out because of his background and the corruption as you get higher in the non criminal business world.. Which is an oxymoron, cause stealing betrayal and murder all take place in that world too.

Coppola released another edit of this ("Coda: The Death of Michael Corleone") in an attempt to make it more coherent. It didnt really change much. Sadly Sofia's performance isn't great (Winona Ryder turned it down - which was just as well cos she was rubbish in Dracula) and she takes the heat away from Garcia (very patchy performance). But the biggest issue was not getting Robert Duvall back and having to write Tom Hagen out of the script (echoes of not getting Clemenza back for part 2 and having to invent Pentangeli). And although Mary and Tony are 8 years older, Michael has aged at least 15+ years cos it's set in the late 70s. Makes no sense.
Most of the "bad guys" are a bit opaque but you were right that it comes alive at the end, when the basic point became clear - Mary was treading a dangerous path, and Michael knew it. Ultimately this was about Michael looking for redemption but the future Pope rightly predicted he wouldn't get it.
Ironically Sofia Coppola is in all three movies. As a kid she played Connie's baby at the Christening in part 1, and a girl on the boat arriving in New York in part 2. She has since become a better director than an actor.
Also - many of the incidents in the movie reflect real life. "God's Banker" was found hanging from Blackfriars Bridge in London, in mysterious circumstances. Two Popes died in quick succession at the end of the 1970s etc. And there was a scandal around the Vatican's banking affairs.

Since you said that you didn't understand, I'll try to explain:
Basically, Don Lucchesi (the man who you saw at 18:21 and 34:35 ) was the mastermind. He was working with the archbishop and the swiss banker and wanted to scam Michael.
They wanted to get Michael to deposit 600 million in the Vatican's bank in order to cover the money that they stole and tried to kill him so that he couldn't get control over the immobiliare.
Joey and Altobello betrayed Michael for Lucchesi.
The man dressed as a priest was an assassin hired by Altobello to kill Michael.

In the beginning of the film, Michael is being inducted into the fictional Order of Saint Sebastian. The Vatican does have a number of military and civilian orders that have their own perks and membership standards. It is interesting that one of the Corleone family is inducted into a Papal Order. In real life the orders are bestowed rarely and on men who are above approach and suspicion who have made significant contributions to the Church and society.
Vincent squeaks by on a technicality when Mary asks him of her father killed her uncle. Michael didn't actually pull the trigger. But I think anyone with a shred of honesty would say that yes, he did kill his brother.
Diabetics are more at risk for heart attacks and strokes.
The cousin thing: At one time it was not all that uncommon. All of the European royal families are related because of cousin marriage. I once worked with a man who was from a country not too far from you. One summer he took his eldest son and they returned to the father's native country. When the returned, the son was married to a cousin. I don't know if he had even met her before they were married. This was in the 1990s. The idea apparently was that any money, land, houses, whatever, would remain in the family. Of course, marriage between cousins also ensures that any recessive genes for diseases remain in the family undiluted, too. Hence the diseases that run through the European royal families.
Confession can be done in a confessional booth, but it can also be done in the same space looking at each other. Either way it is valid.
It is ironic and tragic that Mary died by violence just as Michael was trying to protect her from the violence of criminal life.
A long time ago, about forty years or so, I read somewhere that Mario Puzo thought about calling his book The Godfathers; a contrast between Vito and Michael. It is interesting that Vito left Sicily with nothing and when he died, he had a large family and many associates. Michael returned to Sicily and died all alone with nothing.

You don't have to rewatch this to catch anything you missed or to grasp the story better. There is nothing worth rewatching haha. Just watch Parts 1 and 2 over and over again. Way more rewarding!

Agree. I hate when the last memory of reactors is this one. Haven't watched part 3 in 20 yrs. Saw it at release. Didn't like it. Gave it one more watch a few yrs later to see if I was too harsh. Nope and never again
