I actually used to live in the levelland lubbock area. Before I started playing guitar me and my family went to the buddy holly museum in lubbock and I actually got to see that guitar but I never thought anything of it until I actually started playing guitar.

Did you know "The Big Bopper" wrote "White Lightning" that George Jones had such a huge hit with? (Learned that from Dion, yes Dion & the Belmonts. He was on the same tour, on the same rickety school bus, they put them on! He said Buddy & Richie 1 from Texas, 1 from So. Cal. were miserable in that unforgiving cold.[I was born in Iowa, worked in Fargo, across the river from Moorehead MN, which was their next stop] so the guys decided to let Richie go, some say he won a coin toss. Buddy rented the plane & pilot, from what Dion said.)

My dad grew up in Dallas, only a few years younger than Buddy, even looked a little like him. When I had mowed enough lawns and busted enough tree stumps out of the yard in the summer of 1980, my dad finally decided that he would pitch in the last hundred or so for a good quality guitar. I wanted a Les Paul first, but second was a Strat... I ended up with the the Strat at dad's insistence. I wonder if it would have been the reverse if Buddy stayed with the Les Paul:)

One ever knows! He could’ve upgraded to the 53 LP which was more playable... but history is as it should be, methinks.

Buddy Holly accomplished more by the age of 22 than most mere mortals do in a long lifetime. My brother was stationed in Clovis in the 90s. The #1 attraction is Norman Pettys studio where Buddy (and Roy Orbison) recorded. I didnt know that he started on an LP. Great stuff!

Thanks! I was actually setting out to do a video about Buddy’s strat and I came across the Les Paul. Figured it would be a clever way to kind of do both at the same time. I found out about 24 hours ago myself.

If you notice on the neck and middle pickups the pickup covers on the bottom are broken. He would strum so hard that the upstrokes eventually broke those covers at that spot.

I have several bio books on Holly. I recall reading in one of them, that he had one of his guitars stolen from him. Another story, related how when a fan raved to him about what a fine guitar he had, holly shocked him by gifting him with it. Wonder whos got them now.

What an amazing story!!! I figured the weight of the Les Paul was the reason for changing, cuz I did the same thing in 1993 lol!! But I did keep the Les Paul Studio. I’ve always loved Buddy Holly but until today, I had no idea that he had owned a Les Paul guitar or played one if only for a short period. Thank You 🙏 for these amazing stories!!! ☮️❤️☮️

in the 1950's musicians didn't tour with spare equipment like all bands tour with now, in many cases they would have only one, maybe 2 guitars. gibsons have always been known for having weak headstocks on their necks which break easily, fenders don't have that problem due to the way the neck is designed.

    • @bluesingmusic3443
      @bluesingmusic3443 3 роки тому

Definitely a bad break angle on the neck. I regretted not buying an LP in 1978 when I got my 1st job out of the Navy. It was $600. Now the more I've learned, the less I regret it.

    • @bluesingmusic3443

One of the most. Actually the 1st song called Rock n Roll was "Rocket 88" in 1951. Guess who's band it was? Ike Turner!!! I'm friends with his daughter on FB (she's a knock out by the way). She's not Tinas daughter. She sent me the friend request when I said what I said to you about her Dad in some forum. Ike Turner is the Father of Rock n Roll, Little Richard, & others came 4 or 5 yrs later. Elvis is still the King. But I loved Buddy because he wrote & played & sang most of his hits.

Y’know I’ve always hated strats. I don’t think they’re bad guitars, I just never clicked with them. So went to watch this video thinking “why would you swap to a strat, Buddy?! Team Les Paul all the way! Snarf snarf”
Then I watched the video and it reminded me that early 50’s les Paul’s were actually kinda crap and playing a strat at that time would’ve felt revolutionary. Like, wow I can do all this cool shit with a strat and it doesn’t fight against me or break my back?
    You win this round, strat...

Grrrrrrrrrreat upload...UA-cam , this is another channel that needs your help with exposure to more guitar and music enthusiasts, run with a real passion for sharing and educating, which surely is the YT ethos in a nutshell...I had a Gibson Sonex with a single strap button on the back of the body, it had a poorly repaired neck break...probably due to the single strap button on the back...and it didn't quite tune up, I think it was made from granite and lead and met it's fate in a true rock star moment, and went flying through the window of a second floor appartment with the lead and and half a dozen Boss FX pedals still attached....I REALLLLY wish I had it now but what can ya do.

I can forgive him for buying a Strat (They were new & most definitely "eye candy") but to choose an LP over a Telecaster. I'm stunned I tell you stunned. Now I'm not sorry I gave away my mint condition Coral Rerelease of his Greatest hits on vinyl. (Bought it 1980 I think, gave it to my Mom who was a huge fan. I never played it, she never played it. It's now the property of my baby sister). Shocked I tell you, shocked. (Even though Tommy Bolin called the Strat a Tone Machine, even if it had (in his words) a "sticky neck", once I played that old U neck Butterscotch black guard Tele in that recording studio in Atlanta, I knew. The guitar I rented to do a demo,(a rather pricey famous brand) kept cutting out. The OLD man at the board said he had "an old guitar" in the back, would I like to try it. When he brought that beauty out, literally blew the dust off it, handed it to me, as I secretly wiped the drool off my chin, tuned it up...what a sweet tone!!!! It rang like a bell. I was hooked, still am. When I bought my old girl, I gave my Strat away. Im thinking it was early 50s model by the huge baseball bat neck. What a beauty. Sorry I'm still in shock.😮

Dion has a video about Buddy's last Strat. Very cool info, from some one who was actually there.(I had "Abraham, Martin, & John" running through my head last summer. Looked it up, forgot it was Dion, found the vid of him talking about that ill fated tour. An interesting guitar with lots of myths is Eddie Cochran's Gretsch. Turns out Bobby Cochran, Steppenwolf's 5th lead guitarist is Eddie's great nephew. He got me straight on where the guitar really is. Believe it or not I was briefly room mates with his brother in law, in the Navy. Bobby confirmed that too. Bobby is a great guitarist.

@@TheGuitarHistorian Another mystery is why the Fender electric guitars that he was playing had rosewood fretboards on them when the film was supposed to be set in the 1950s. Fender didn't start using rosewood until 1959 and they only had maple fretboards up until then. That's part of why Buddy's Stratocaster had the construction that it did.
