What I always find astonishing is Dr. Sen's capacity of recalling exact names of persons and books and events from several decades ago. I came to know from the commentary of the book that he did his PhD paper within one year but he had to wait by protocol for 3 years to be actually accepted. It is a tragedy this universally revered professor wasn't listened to by our present government and instead was mocked by our "non matric post graduate" prime minister that his preference was for "hard work over Harvard". What a vast intellectual difference between Dr. Manmohan Singh and Mr. Modi! How humble Dr. Sen's statement was " It is not important to win Nobel prize but to make a difference in people's lives" (paraphrased). The Pratichi trust that he established with his prize money came up today with their findings that the "Kanyasree and Duare Sarkar" programme started by Mamata Banerjee had a significant impact in people's lives. You can draw some parallel with Tagore in this respect. While Tagore's Nobel prize money went to build Santiniketan, Dr. Sen's money is being mainly utilized thru this "Pratichi Trust" in doing splendid work about primary education in eastern India and India as a whole. As Dr. Roy requested, we shall wait eagerly for Volume 2 of his memoir.

Amazing interview of a giant of an intellectual. Dr Amartya Sen is eloquent and clear in speech for his age . Very interesting! I will read his book sometime in the near future. His views on religion and politics is compatible to mine. I wish the present government gave his ideas some attention.
It is a pity that a journalist of a stature of Pronnoy Roy should have hinted at winning a prize as the goal of a researcher who is in reality a truth seeker. Sen very effectively discounted the comment saying it's not a good idea to do a prize -oriented research.

I read almost every book by Prof. Sen I could get in my twenties.. Argumentative Indian Development as Freedom India Development Participation (along with Jean Dreze) Idea of Justice The uncertain glory.. And I feel he gave me a unique perspective which I never had. Will highly recommend his books, if you haven’t already tried one.
Prof Sen best known as an astute polemicist seems to be an equally ambidextrous dab hand at the anecdotal genre. His lovingly often humorously portrayal of a Bengali middle-class family like his own in the backdrop of lively Calcutta of his youth is sure to pull at the heartstrings of many a soul of our generation. Inevitably that dreaded elegiac question, always at the back of our head raises its ugly head,- where did we go wrong? Only an incisive mind of Prof Sen’s stature,-his health and frailty of age permitting, may have some definitive answer. May he live long and hopefully find some time to apply his mind to this vexed question searing in many of our minds.

Wonderful interview, only thing I always fail to understand that a philosopher like him does not care to drive deep into the minds of people who has a different opinions than him, the reformation of Suu Kyi of Burma might have some deeper reason than just military force and politics, specially when you know that she is a strong personality. Perhaps you don’t know some fact what she knows? Another thing a being logically balanced, Congress did not use instruments of suppression ? You must know more than I know sir.
Suu Kyi's intolerant outburst to the minority community is well documented by BBC long before she yielded to the charm offensive of the junta. She compromised her stated moral position too in the process of her grab for power. About her later transformation, Prof Sen is absolutely correct. Maybe his earlier assessment of her as a courageous, strong friendly sort of person, etc was wrong.

Four life long suggestions to any central government in India 1. Divide all states which has more than 25 district into two smaller states. Right now it is crying need of the hour to Divide UP in 4 parts. 2. Give each person Rs 10000/pm ages lies in between 35-55, whoever does sterilization. 3. Give 100% free education to all 10% toppers from any board or university for the next academic session.( or may give full course scholarships) 3. Make English as the national language. It will be easy and quick to adopt by each and every Indians. 5. Make it mandatory to be a graduate for any candidate to fight any election..
India needs Bengali economists and not Gujrati economists. In the last 7 years, Bengali economists have made Bangladesh richer than India and today it does better in Most Social indexes also.
