How can anybody not like this scene? It was only present in Coppola's Redux version, but the examination of Vietnam's past in the French scene is one of my favourite parts of the whole film. The tension it builds is incredible here.
Yeah I love how the dinner table starts calm and orderly but everyone leaves bc no one can agree. Great little distillation of the conflict and a great contrast to the first meal scene we get where its a silent agreement whats happening.
This is the French Plantation scene, from the French-dubbed version of this movie. As such it loses all the impact it had in the original English-language version, where only the actual French guys, and Chef, speak French, not Sheen and the rest of the guys. Furthermore the plantation owner reverts to English when he talks face to face with Sheen.
You're right in a sense.but leave the french speak french.not only.look 1.34. The style of the uniforms.and the posture.another vietnam.and before u.s. troops.leave a bit of history to whom it belongs.that bit.
I love how the French sequences were shot and scored, although I didn't see the narrative purpose of any of it being in the film. Redux is interesting but nowhere as effective as theatrical.
Because Colonel Kurtz repetively assaulted the plantation several times. French had it and wasn’t sure of American patrol boat is working for colonel Kurtz
Its supposed to be about Vietnam's history. Each stop on the Nung River had something to say about Vietnam, this scene represents ghosts from the past Meeting Willard. Its not clear if they are real or not, its highly possible that the entire sequence is Willard's dream. It also serves as comparison between French and Americans - both refuse to leave lands that don't belong to them. It also makes the theme of the film about going back in time more significant - from modern US Army, to French colonialists, ending at primitive tribe with Kurtz as leader.

Watching the smoke disappear to reveal the French standing there on the ready is one of the coolest movie scenes ever.

elle est génial cette scène ,les français qui arrivent comme des fantômes du passé sorti de la brume

Having watched the redux version, I think the theatre version I grew up with is crap by comparison. This portion is essential.

French looks intidimating.
It is! Colonel Kurtz attacked their plantation several times. Plus, it give Chef a purpose as he can speak French and save his crew life.
Jay "Chef" Hicks is very important in this part. He literally saved his boat mates.
