  • Did you know that type 2 diabetes can be reversed with dietary changes?
And did you know that it can be done not by changing how much you eat, but by changing what you eat. Changes in food composition instead of quantity accomplishes this. Specifically it’s a very low carb diet, better known as the ketogenic diet.
What's the most important thing in losing fat?
Calorie balance is the most important element in weight loss. As the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention puts it: “If you are gaining weight, you are eating more calories than your body is using.” Calories play a big role in controlling your weight

Great. Keep it up. Just be careful when you get to you ideal weight. On Keto you gain it back as quickly as you lose if start eating carb. I lost 55 lbs on Keto but gained 40 again in only two months. Going back on it again.

@@Marta_is_here to lose weight on keto ie to put my body into a state of ketosis, I had a daily intake of 21g carbs a day. I was starving all day and couldn’t eat hardly any of the fruit and veg I love. I lost a stone and a half in 2-3 weeks and put most of it back on when I resumed normal eating - still healthy though. My stomach felt good on it because I’m carb-sensitive but my belly fat increased on the diet. I’m menopausal and belly fat is the very last thing I need when I’m struggling with menopausal belly, not to mention to cancerous aspect. Also the undue pressure on the liver worried me.
It is such an imbalanced diet I don’t see how the Doctor can be recommending it.

I and my husband, both in late 70s eat unprocessed food. We grow hydroponic veg on our unit terrace, mostly greens and tomatoes and capsicum. We eat early in the evening so we actually fast for 14-16 hrs depending on our breakfast time. We both exercise and both have lost our Covid weight gain, around 4kgs each as our exercise venues were closed for 2 yrs so we were reduced to walking. Our sugar treat is non dairy dark chocolate of an evening, 6 squares max. We are healthy even though we have age related body issues but insides are A1.

I have been seeing the creator of the South Beach Diet, Dr. Agatston. His new book is called the Keto Friendly South Beach Diet. The change in my labs has been profound. Insulin resistance level went from medium to low. My Triglycerides dropped 100 points from over 160 to the mid 60's. and they have been high for decades. Even my Cholesterol dropped 40 points. This series of talks is done so well, it could very well put docs out of business. He says what I have been saying to patients since the 1990s. When I'd say the most common form of diabetes (type 2) can be cured by dietary intervention, not only would patients get angry-- other medical professionals would object. Despite my coaching and advise on what to eat, patients would refuse to remove sugary processed foods and blame me when they still had diabetes. Sending patients to Certified Diabetes Educators helped but it would still fall short of the mark.

My internist always pushes the keto diet. I've lost 20 pounds by staying under a recommended calories on MyFitnessPal. I just try to lose 1/2 pound a week. If I stay under the calories, then I lose weight. If I don't stay under the calories, then I don't lose weight. If I go over the calories too much, then I'll regain weight. Recently added in exercising & bumped up some sugar intake. Sugar helps give me a bit of extra energy to move, then the exercise is helping me to improve my stamina. So... I try to use the sugar bump for the walking / jogging program. I'm not trying to lose weight from the exercise. -- I can try some more keto style meals, but doing keto is too much restriction. You can't even eat a banana on those type of diets.

Minimally processed means food in its most natural state. Think cuts of meat (leaner), real butter, whole fruits and veggies, olive oil, nuts and seeds not cooked in oil. Stay away from any grain that has been stripped, trans fats (highly processed vegetable oils), anything with added sugar or has a list of ingredients that is more than three items. If you need bread, try Ezekiel bread. It’s sprouted whole grains so it’s minimally processed.

0:50 "Not by reducing calories" But they *did* reduce calories. Enough to lose 28 lbs. They may not have done so deliberately, but removing carbs removes calories. So how are you so sure the improvement is due to the lack of carbs and not due to the sustained caloric deficit? Switching to a plant-based (i.e. mostly carbs) diet has the exact same effect. So does living off junk food from the convenience store, while strictly maintaining a caloric deficit a la Mark Haub. Even ED patients put on the "potato diet" (eating nothing but potato for a couple of weeks) experience the exact same effects despite eating nothing but carbs. Disappointing.

    Thank You Dr. Hansen,
I've been looking at different kinds of diets 9 (ways of eating healthier), and have been experimenting with different types of diets. It's not to lose weight, as I don't have much extra weight. It's to increase my overall health. I'll be 51 on Sept 2 and am now becoming more conscious about the things I eat. Cutting out salt and sugar as much as possible, and trying to eat less processed foods and not eating fast food at all. I love vegetables and fruit and have my whole life, but I know that keeping a healthy sustainability eating just fruits and veggies isn't realistic. I've stopped eating beef as I have found it really makes it hard for me to digest what I eat and I don't physically feel good after eating it.
If you could do more videos regarding different types of diets that would be greatly appreciated and truly helpful for me to reach the goals I have set for myself to achieve.

As a physician myself, Its horrifying to know that manufactured foods are much cheaper than many whole foods. Most of my obese and/or diabetic and cardiac patients tell me that they can’t afford to eat mostly whole foods, so they fill their bellies (and their children’s) with bread, pasta, and other cheap carbs. My GUESS is that intense aerobic and weight lifting exercise while on low carb, not ketosis, should speed up the process.
If your weight loss has stalled you may want to try adding intermittent, or preferably extended, fasting to your lifestyle. Dr. Jason Fung has great videos about the topic, some aimed at postmenopausal women.

There is a UA-cam channel and a book called mastering diabetes and basically they say that a diet should be high in fruits and even starchy vegetables and whole grains so long as the diet contains low low fat. They say that it is the fat in cells that prohibits glucose from entering the cells properly and it’s the high fat diet that causes insulin resistance not too much carbohydrate. That makes no sense! GLUCOSE is what causes diabetes, not fat! Why are you going to limit the ONLY nutrient that does not raise insulin? Insulin resistance is caused by too much carb. Beans/lentils are the foods most associated with longevity. The number one risk factor for having a stroke is not eating enough fruit. Even with leafy greens, dietary fiber intake on a ketogenic diet would be abysmal - which would be terrible for the microbiome. Red meat is a class-two carcinogen.
Going on this diet is a terrible idea. It does not cure diabetes (curing diabetes would be eating normally, without having to restrict carb intake, and having healthy insulin levels) and it increases CVD and cancer risk. I am disappointed that no mention of this was made in this video.

Its analogous to *curing* the inability to swim by avoiding large bodies of water. Solving the problem of being unable to swim would be learning how to swim. In other words, achieving carbohydrate tolerance.

@@arambarsamian6312 - Hmm, do you know that you CAN eat plants on a keto diet??? But coming back to your point, yes, keto FIXES it. What happens with insulin resistance? Well, the body can longer manage the amount of glucose in the blood. Cells are flooded with it and no matter how much insulin is applied, they won't absorb it. Do you know what keto does? For one, until your body runs out of glucose, it will consume the excess glucose in the blood, then the glucose stored in the liver and then the glucose stored in the glycogen in your muscles. Ok, no more glucose coming from food, the body will struggle a bit to understand what's going on, you will fee bad for a bit until the body learns what to do, burn fat for fuel. So all the glucose you need will be made in your own body and the rest fat and ketones will be used. So, after some 2 months like this, all your mitochondria will change into fat fueled mitochondria and everything will go back to normal, you don't need more meds or extra insulin. After some months like this, if you want to introduce healthy carbs and you know you can control yourself, you can. The big problem is that people don't know how to eat sensibly and they go back to the old habits that cause them diabetes in the first place. So keto WILL solve the problem, but afterwards you can't expect to go back to old ways without facing the same consequences.

dropped 120lbs in 9 months about 1.5 years ago. still fast 16 to 18hrs per day eating low carb. This stuff works.
But I think there is more to the story, as the relationship between different levels of exercise and fuel types (carbs, fats) hasn't been studied enough. Our ancestors were much more active than we are. I think that if you live a sedentary life, you should aim for zero carbs. If you live an active life and physically work hard, carbs may be necessary. But as Dr. Mike says, the key thing is avoid the over-processed foods: these are engineered to be addicitive and have no nutritional value. Our grocery stores sell mostly poison.
