@@dog_city it matters because genetics deseases can happen if you mix similar genetic material, if there are that much siblings, so close to each other without knowing. The offspring may meet each other and get together, and have other children who can be born with genetic problems without knowing it could have been avoided. And in a more unlikely setting incest can happen.

@@Eralen00 I doubt anyone would do that (though you never know), but a lot of people would resent the lawsuit due to its nature. Just look at all the people arguing against abortion by going “I was an unplanned pregnancy/the result of rape/a child with congenital abnormalities and my mother could have aborted me, but if she had I wouldn’t be here.” Like the idea of some stranger advocating for the right to exercise one’s reproductive freedom is almost a personal attack to them, because they know it could easily have been them. It’s similar in this case. It’s essentially a lawsuit that argues some of these people should not have been born. It’s not a pov I share or even a reaction that I really get, but it’s not a given that everyone would be able to look at it logically, without their emotions getting in the way. In that sense it is commendable.

@@EIizabethGrace he isn't "advocating for the right to exercise one's reproductive freedom" doe, he's advocating for some control in these clinics, he isn't saying "these people should never have been born", he's saying "these people shouldn't have been born, using my genetic material, as that can cause inbreeding, due to the carelessness and money-grubbing of a clinic", if these clinics had some morals (yeh a company with morals kekw), or some control, these people's mothers would still have gone to these clinics, and these people would still have been born, just not all from the same father/genetic material, in a relatively small area, where they can meet, and unknowingly inbreed...

    • @EIizabethGrace
      @EIizabethGrace 3 роки тому +18

@@hehexd5317 I guess it all comes down to how you view the nature human life in that sense, I guess. Any combination of eggs and sperm even involving the same people would technically be unique, so the child that would have been born of an entirely different donation would arguaby not be them. Which means the lawsuit would techinically, as one of them actually mentioned, be against their existence. It isn't irrational to think that.
The point is that, if you look past that first, instinctively off-putting factor, the subject of the lawsuit is actually the bio father, but even more so it's largely impersonal. It's about medical practice, biology, social issues, ethics and a bunch of other stuff going well beyond the existence of these kids as anything more than objects of the same. So I agree with you. I'm just saying not everyone really thinks that way, in my experience. Some people would prioritize the value-based notions above the rational ones and likely come to a conclusion along the lines of 'I see what's going on (or not, depending on how much they at least looked at it from a different perspective), but I can't support a lawsuit that states I shouldn't be here.' Personally, it doesn't sound very constructive, but it's not a given that someone would not think like the people in this video. Just wanted to point that out.

@@Happy-xi9hl sadly, no. Look up the story of the Habsburgs, they married into so many royal families that after a few generations inbreeding was unavoidable because everyone had blood ties spanning 1, 2, 3 generations back, and genetic problems started to appear. While in this current generation it's not that problematic, the problem is that these donor children were born all in the same region, as such, even if some move away and the like, the probability of most of their grandchildren staying around long enough to marry into the community is not that wild, and they could end with someone who's way too close gene-wise. Not only that but if this happened in the first place, there could be even more children in the future born from this unregulated moves, limiting the gene variations even more (let's say you have just 2 donors who had 20 children each, each child has 2 children, that means there's 80 children in the same area who are related and might no know it, now those grandchildren have children, and suddenly you have 160 people who are relatively close related without knowing. While the probability is low, not knowing the exact number and who was affected means you could indeed end up blindly marrying into the family). This means that 4 generations from now on, and without knowing the exact number of how many donations were manipulated, you could end with 4, 5, 6, maybe even more family lines crossing each other way too closely. The problem is not just the fact that there's too many of them, but also the fact that there's probably a looot more people in the same situation without knowing.

Edit: Sure, let’s say they marry each other and there’s no inbreeding effects for the first one or two generations. What happens to generation five or six? Or ten? A perplexing and untraceable string of severe birth defects within a single local area, seeing as people are most likely to marry people who live nearby.
Concerned parents couldn’t really figure it out until the doctors found out it was a genetic problem, and then the parents did a DNA test and found out what was up, and by then it would be too late. This gang of kids has saved future generations a LOT of unnecessary suffering, difficulty in life, healthcare money and more by discovering this problem before its consequences had a chance to reveal themselves.

Them marrying each other isn’t such a big problem though. The chances of genetic mutation due to inbreeding is low, especially first generation inbreeding. You usually won’t see effect until multiple generations of inbreeding in. The royal family had lots of inbreeding as a way to keep the royal line “pure”. Queen Victoria and Prince Albert were first cousins. You don’t see any genetic mutations in them. The only royal family I know that really had any genetic mutations due to inbreeding was the German royal family. But that’s because they inbred like CRAZY.

My mother was good natured and very well as a single parent. Yes it may be different where you are from, I get that point of view, but it is different for everyone. You can't stay together if you are always arguing and carrying on, it actually effects the child way more then splitting up. This is so freaking bad. In a long term, if they can't trace who are their donor-sibling, they might ended up married each other without knowing. Genetic disease might become more and more common since there will be less genetic variability. This is why unstandardized sperm donor procedure is bad.

I'm Irish too. Maybe it's an Irish thing but I met about 6 or 7 aunts or uncles that I hadn't seen since I was 5 years old, many, many years later, and my eyes teared up.
I didn't recognize any of them.
I felt like I was home and that I hadn't been home in many, many years.
I thought it would be awkward, and for the first 3 minutes I didn't feel any awkwardness, just made some light jokes and things felt normal.
"Hi, I believe you are my uncle?" I'd smile and shake their hand.
After a few minutes, and after I had met 3 of my uncles and 2 or 3 of my aunts, all within the first 5 minutes, I had to hold back my tears because of the feeling of home.
I didn't want them to see me cry and I didn't let them.
It got harder and harder until tears came out of my eyes, but my face had a smile, my voice didn't shake, and I did not let my mouth frown, although I wanted to cry from how whole I felt.
My father told me that my uncles told him that my aunts saw the tears in my eyes pouring out, and that they hid their tears, but went to the back of the house and hugged my uncles and they let their tears out and cried while they hugged my uncles. I assume they probably felt like they had found their long lost nephew.
I miss my aunts and uncles badly and it would be nice to move near them and near my father and mother. I am busy with life, but one day.
Family is one of my favorite gifts of life.

I believe people need to discuss personal, financial, professional, emotional and cultural things with their partner before they marry. Topics like adoption, IVF conception, physical challenges dealing with mental health/ addiction / financial issues will be discussed and talked out before getting married. So if someone found out they married their genetic "sibling", then it is on them.
THis could happen if the father was a player or kids were given up for adoption. One does not need only IVF kids to worry about marrying their genetic sibling. TO me this is just a money grab case.

One student I knew was dubbed a super donor, as he had high sperm counts, sought after features, and an impressive resume. I would not be surprised in the least to find out that he has thousands of biological children.

Some of that is around in smaller scales by undocumented adoptions and marriage out of wedlock. My boyfriend's family has a lot adoption, and I have no idea who the parents were of one of my grandmothers, but I know there was some indigenous guy who was likely the dad, making it so I'm related in some way to the people who were living hundreds of years ago where I now live. But who knows how many people may be related, especially where my French side was known for having 8-13 biological kids just from two parents. My grandpa grew up with 11 siblings. But if you go back far enough, I guess we'd all be related somehow, it's just how careful to be, and what the risks may be, and there certainly are risks.
