Honestly yeah. I like beer because to me, it tastes good. I like pot because it eases my mind and helps me decompress from a lot of stress and anger caused by chronic depression, and Post-traumatic Stress Disorder. But hearing someone calmly explain, in the most non-bias way possible why they don't, and NOT be an asshole about it? Pretty fucking based.

Lots of people use because it numbs the pain of being alive. They look at you funny because the majority of people suffer to the point of feeling the need to numb it. Such as getting surgery. For instance I cannot make it without weed. I’ll self harm or do other erratic shit to suffice my addiction to feel something. So we look at you funny because you’re different. I cant relate to someone who doesn’t have to numb their pain, because clearly you haven’t suffered as much as me. We aren’t going to see eye to eye. And if you truely just have suffered balls to the wall sober, then congrats, but I find it highly unlikely than anyone can suffer to the point of ptsd and not end up using substance at some point, or coping with an unhealthy behavior, even if you are able to put it down. Long story short, we look at you funny because there is a clear and obviously massive gap in life experience. Trust me, you learn a lot going through the ringer with drugs, and that’s knowledge your never going to have. (Albeit maybe a good thing) because some people never learn and never grow.

Okay, I know probably no one will give a single crap but I have been in and out of addiction million times all before turning 20 so I'm giving myself the right to speak here. This video made me tear up. I personally started drinking to deal with potential bpd and depression. Not to mention stress from school and homophobia/biphobia. Almost my whole family has been an alcoholic or is related to someone who drank profusely.
Over the summer of last year (2021 to be more specific) I fell into a deep despair of a shitty workplace, bad relationships, and sexual trauma. I won't go into deep detail here but it obviously messed me up big time. So I turned to the most obvious "solution": alcohol. At 19. It eventually turned out so bad that I had to literally warn people from making me drink. I had to cut a lot of people off for forcing me to forget my morals.
This year I had a relapse. Arguments, almost getting kicked out and struggling with accepting myself followed by me coming out to my parents. I eventually pissed off to Germany but believe it or not, a couple of beers were what kept me basically "alive".
I still struggle. I currently am not perfectly sober while typing this out but I hope one day I can fix this. That I can somehow leave this unhealthy coping mechanism behind me. That I can express myself and my emotions without having to numb myself beyond recognition.
I'm sorry for writing a straight damn essay here. But maybe this is the right place to let this go.
    Thank you

Hi from a straight edge metal punk guy! Very similar story to yours. I never drank. Ok, I tried few things early on but didn't stick with me. In early high school days my metal buddies were demolishing themselves with can after can of beer. I was out of sync for a while and I felt bad for not having the desire or need to blend in with drinking. For a while I got peer pressure stupidity, even from my own parents, but after I while I got even more opposed to it 'cause I saw it as a form of social conditioning. At first I hated that shit, but then I understood it as a form of my own little rebelliousness and I wore it as a badge. Next stage, I dropped the idea that I'm in any way, shape or form, superior to anybody else because of my stance on substances. Now, I'm pretty regular dude of 36, I can hang with any kind of crowd, drinkers, smokers, straighters, and I don't feel out of place, not because I'm really not, but because I stopped caring. I don't preach, don't bother people with my own stance on this, I just do my thing. I remember all of my parties, am sane and able, don't have hangovers, issues that go with alcohol use (be it health related or other general reasons) and I like myself having some control over myself (not too much control, being a control freak isn't good :)). So kudos to you. I sense that we are rare, especially in metal community.

My wife has never drank in her life, not once. She just thinks it's stupid and irresponsible.
Me personally I only ever drink on special occasions, parties with my friends which only happens like once a year, my wedding, wedding anniversaries etc.
Any other time I prefer not to drink, I'm rarely in the mood and as you said most of the time it's unnecessary when other drinks just taste better anyway.
You are definitely right about people who just drink for fun and have no meaningful hobbies.. I honestly can't imagine life without hobbies..

And even lately I havn't even wanted one anymore... It's amazing how quick you loose that desire once you just make that choice to give it up. My husband was borderline alcoholic and he found a youtuber named Sober Leon that helped him out. His drinking was the main thing that actually caused us frustration as a couple and it was not an example either of us wanted for our kids. I gave into the pressure to drink as a young adult, good on you for standing your ground! It's weird how people almost take it as a personal attack that we've given up a vice and have bettered ourselves. It shows you how insecure people really are with their own drinking issues...

2 months sober here after drinking for 17 years, and I can agree with pretty much every single thing you've said here. It took me a long time to really see the forest for the trees, and I'm never going back to how I was. I was one of those "party" metalheads who felt like part of my onstage persona was being drunk and obnoxious, which I thought equaled "funny and entertaining", but now I realize I was just acting stupid and people were more just laughing AT me, not WITH me. Now my health is improving, my weight is dropping like crazy, I've got more energy, no more headaches/hangovers, and my emotions are way more stable. Hell, my music output has increased drastically as well; I honestly don't know how I was putting out music before at all when now I want to write stuff just about every day.
People who pressure you to drink with them are just trying to drag you down into their misery, even if they don't consciously realize it. My advice to ANYONE who is curious about alcohol is just simply: Don't do it, It's absolutely not worth it. Best case scenario is you end up hating it and never drink again. Worst case scenario is you get addicted and you start craving it for the rest of your life. Alcoholism is a very slow, sad death, and it affects everyone around you as well as yourself.
If someone wants to have a drink or two once a week or so, then whatever. But NEVER make a habit out of it, and don't ever feel pressured by friends or family to drink just to fit in.

It’s legitimately refreshing to hear about another metalhead that’s also always been against drinking. Specifically the current drinking culture. Honestly, I’ve always seen it as a complete waste of time and one of the worst methods of escaping your problems.
It was kinda difficult when I was younger seeing some of my friends become so engrossed in the whole idea of getting drunk every week, spending a huge chunk of their paycheck on beer, and waking up with a terrible hangover the next day. They also became kinda boring as all they wanted to do was go to a bar. I wondered “What happened to going to a new restaurant? Going to a concert? Going to a movie? Playing a new game? Awesome upload 🤘 My best friend is a hardline straight edge metalhead I met in high school. He aligns a lot with your views here. I and many friends started smoking weed in college, but he hasn't left my side while staying true to his own values. I can't ever imagine calling him immature for his conviction. An absolute legend of a man, his kindness and his will are both bountiful and to be respected.

Each individual has his/hers own personality and character. I'm 40 years old, and was a heavy drinker until I was 30. Obviously, drinking is bad for your health. Very bad. That's undisputed. That being said, I can honestly say, the stories, the memories, the epic episodes, that I gathered, thanks to those wild and intense party years, always involving drinking with friends and girlfriends, are something that I treasure very much. Also as a metalhead, playing in bands, and having like-wise groups of buddies. And it was not just the "wild stories." Also, cool, relaxed and deep conversations, having drinks at night, listening to some calm music. To each his own, some people are happy joining a monastery. To ME, personally, to paraphrase Jon Nodtveidt from Dissection: Open yourself for Chaos. I mean, I know it's the super fluffy duffy 21st century, but we're still metalheads, right? Alcohol is an important part of Metal music, for these reasons. James Hetfield, Dave Mustaine, Dimebag, Lemmy, etc. Hetfield and Mustaine stopped at the right time. I'm sure they treasure all the drinking memories as well. In any case, nowadays, with the intense internet social media, people simply don't need to search for the thrill anymore. Everything is available on-line, chatting with friends, dating girls, music albums, movies, etc. If it's good or bad? It's a matter of perception, I guess. Probably both. I think everything and everyone is becoming too tamed in my opinion.

I love seeing a video like this. I am almost 23 and have also never drank. Ive taken probably less than a dozen sips of alcohol throughout my life and I have yet to have a drink I like. I decided not to drink cause I have a very addictive and extreme personality and I know any drugs or alcohol I would go wayyyy overboard with. People tell me I will change all the time or that I'm avoiding alcohol to feel superior to other people. Its sad that just because I am choosing to avoid something that I know would ruin me gets so heavily judged and misconstrued. I had a good friend tell me they didn't trust people who wouldnt do drugs or alcohol cause "they must be hiding someting". My family didnt have any abuse issues when I was growing up either, this is an entirely personal choice cause I know how I am with things and taking things to a level of extremity thats not ok. I also have a very outgoing personality and I have never struggled with social anxiety so I still love going out with friends to dance and meet new people and all that jazz. All my best friends drink and thats no issue with me cause they can all control it. They never care that I dint drink, actually they love it cause I am always down to DD and nobody feels like theyre missing out :) There arent many of us out there who chose to not try any drugs or alcohol from day 1 so its refreshing to know other people get the same shit for it. I totally agree its so annoying having to constantly explain myself to the "why dont you drink" question. So over it

i grew up in a small town. drinking and drugs was all everyone i knew did. from very young ages even, it wasnt strange to see a 15 year old on speed. i've never done drugs, hated they way their ruined their lives. many people have tried to get me to do drugs. luckily i am stubborn as fuck and the more you tell me to do something the less likely i'll do it.
i did struggle with self harm at that time. and drank alcohol for a while. but really strictly only at parties. somewhere in my process of quitting self harm. i cought myself replacing it with alcohol. the moment i noticed that i stopped drinking too. never drank another sip of alcohol since. i've been sober for 12 years now. but i really hate answering people why i choose to be sober. i have good reasons. but you shoulnt even need good reasons to want to live a healthier life.

It’s true, you find out quickly who your real friends are when you tell them you’ve quit the party lifestyle. The ones who are still doing drugs and drinking don’t wanna hang out with you anymore or want anything to do with you. I used it to suppress all my trauma and emotions that I didn’t want to go through or deal with. The worst part was I became Nihilistic with Narcissistic and Sociopathic Tendencies. Once I quit all that, I no longer am any of those things. Metal music,my girlfriend and a lot of talk therapy saved me from that hell I put myself in. Alcohol and cigarettes had to go

For me, I think it's because I'm a super-taster, so alcohol just ruins any drink it's in. I never seen the point or purpose of "getting drunk." I'd rather be coherent and able bodied than all the negative side effects drinking has. It's super expensive compared to other regular drinks, has no health benefits, and everyone I've ever been around who drinks or does drugs are just worse off in every way. Great vid lad, glad to see someone openly make a video about this subject. I might have to do something similar for my audience and watch the metrics.

    3. I just don't really care to drink

I was straight edge from 13 to 31. Definitely motivated by punk and hardcore, not just sober without that context. I found my gf in bed with a longtime friend and started drinking as a hissyfit over it. I became a bad alcoholic almost instantly. Five years later, I was drinking a whole bottle of whiskey daily (old crow, 13.99). That's like. Idk. 400 dollars a month? Got fat, red face, loner, shit attitude.
I got sober again for my kid. Quit when she was a year old. She may not get a happy, successful father but she gets a sober one instead of a waste of a man or nothing at all. I still don't do any dangerous drugs, although I use sleep meds, anxiety med, etc for viable reasons. The label "Straight Edge" and all the hc culture baggage isn't important but sobriety by any name is powerful and important.

Fuck that,I really enjoy my solitude and I have a lot of free time for my hobbies.I went to black metal concert one night and I was probably the only guy in the entire bar who didn't drink or smoke ,thinking to myself -screw that,I'm here just for the music. The best way to treat an addiction is to never start with it,...

As someone who has struggled with alcohol and drug addiction since I was 14 and to this day I'm still on and off in my addiction, I absolutely respect and understand you. Alcohol is such a slippery slope and there are some people who can just drink once in a while, there's other people like myself who can't. Sometimes it's better to simply not drink because you never know how your mind and body are going to react to it, I was addicted ever since I tried the first sip of alcohol and quickly I started doing drugs too. It has destroyed my life not just socially considering that I've hurt my family and friends, but also my body. I have very poor cognitive skills from taking drugs and drinking in my most crucial developing years.
The fact that someone would ask you why you don't want to drink is wild to me.

I've sworn off all recreational drugs, including even the most "tame" like tobacco. I've many reasons for it myself. One's that I'm religious, another is that I have many addicts in my family and I've seen first hand how addiction ruins lives, and also because I just want to keep my mind completely sober after having experienced multiple psychotic episodes from 2017 to 2019. My brain already has problems, and I fear even the most tame of "mental lubricants" could worsen my condition.

This is my frist time viewing your channel, but as someone with a drinking problem that desperately wants to find a way out of it, I can say I am so glad that you never picked up the habit. My dad drank and I swore I never would. He wasn't abusive, he would just yell and had hyper tension and probably bipolar (which I have). His passing just before I turned 18 sent me on a path straight to it. It's no excuse, but I think it's a big part of why I started. You are 31. That's still pretty young. And you CAN get away from drinking and rebuild your health. I completely gave up alcohol shortly after my 50th birthday. I had really screwed up my life thru alcoholism and alcoholic behaviour patterns. Finally gotten into bad serious trouble, after so many lucky escapes. It was life changing. Horrible. Humiliating. Scarring. I made a sacred promise never to drink again. I meant it absolutely and the feeling of relief after making that decision was indescribable. Nine years later on and I will still never touch it. You have a lot of insight into why you drink. All I can say is act on what your heart is telling you. You still have the chance for so much life ahead of you. When I was hammered and blacked out and delusional, it only took a few seconds to do stuff I so regret now. And the consequences are instantaneous. Life is still hard - which is just life. But it is at least real. I drank to escape and loved drinking on my own, just listening to music. People and responsibilities got in the way, unfortunately. Find your way out before you find yourself pushed into a darker place. You don't have to end up hurt, crushed and discarded.

Today I dislike the person I was then and appreciate who I am today more than I did back when I was still drinking. It was not an easy road but I'm proud of walking the path I did and of the person I am today. I hope my comment helps.

i love alcohol and have many good times with it but i have some friends that don’t drink and no one pressures them too. they genuinely enjoy watching us get drunk and get lost in music lol. but to each their own

Nothing wrong with not drinking. I'm allergic to alcohol so I can't drink.

I don't drink that often anymore. Smoking is way nicer and plus i hate hangovers.

great video man, I for one love beer and love tasting different beers, I for one had my fair share of incidents where alcohol was the main problem like one summer where i was a drunken wreck, ended up laying on the ground and my friends would text me saying that they would end up telling my parents about it and quit hanging out with me since I'm running their fun
another one was at a company dinner, i drank a lot of beers and i ended up sitting alone and I didn't hang with the coworkers cause i didn't want to be making a scene, later they were helping me out by getting me home, the day after i had a major headache, luckily i took a painkiller and I was able to go to a concert later so i decided for next time not to drink so much, be more sociable and drink more soda and water and not so much beer

I 100% agree with the point you made at 6:45 - 6:55 ... I drink and do other things, but I always manage to keep my finances under control, more than most of my peers, anyway. People are always asking me for money, even if they have jobs and earn pretty much the same as me. It's because they abuse alcohol and other substances so much that they end up broke like 3 or 4 days before their next pay day. They don't understand that they have to SAVE FOR THEIR FUTURE!!!! It bothers me how many people can't see alcohol and substance abuse as a cause for their own financial problems.
