The wild fact that this carnival and the Witchlight carnival’s stories are intertwined is wild! Would love to see a video expanding on this story in the future!
I did not realize this troupe could travel to domains that closed off thier border. Strahd, I hope you are ready for a carnival. This seems like a great way for players to catch thier breath without destroying the atmosphere that you built up.
Strahd has a bargain with the Vistani where they are granted unmolested free passage into and out of Barovia. Isolde also has a bargain with them, as they act as her couriers and suppliers. Do the math.
As long as you aren't too concerned about the Twisting and don't think for a second the carnies don't know what you're up to. Well, that and Isolde wouldn't let anyone endanger Carnival as a whole. But navigating those concerns could make for great roleplaying opportunities.
Same! I consider myself a huge Ravenloft buff, been reading Fraternity of Shadows for years, wore out my Domains of Dread hardback, have a Vistani character I've been playing for 15 years, and I had never heard of this domain. VERY happy to have this heretofore unknown hole in my knowledge filled!
I never considered it a domain, myself. At least back in 2nd ed. demons and devils had a warping 'reality wrinkle' in a radius around it, all having various effects; I just assumed it was a similar concept around Isolde.
The description of mysterious fliers appearing overnight on walls, people's tables and no sign of who left them is my favorite part. Been a while but I remember this being a good read written like you show up as a player, classic module.
Such a great domain that I've never been able to use despite having had the original setting material for more than two decades. The novel based on it ("Carnival of Fear" by J. Robert King) is one of the better Ravenloft side novels (those outside of the Strahd/Azalin/Soth books), and puts the cycles of tragedy and despair that the Demiplane of Dread loves to use on full display. [SPOILERS clarifications about the novel's end] Note about Hermos murdering Marie not covered in the video: it was more of a tragic decision based on compassion than anything else. Hermos was a gentle giant who loved and respected Marie, and to see her be forced to become the new Puppet Master pained him so much that he killed her to save her. EDIT: Isolde's curse is two-fold: that she may never find her quarry, and that she may actually be causing the Twisting, which is a reality warp effect that physically changes people who spend too much time in the carnival (i.e. near Isolde), transforming them into "freaks" that end up more-or-less feeling like they belong there and can never be normal again. I once played a blind staff fighter in a 3E one-shot in honor of Marie, the blind knife juggler/thrower.
I have read most of the dark domain novels. I am looking forward to this video. I'm going to have to go back to your channel and look for the others that you have done
great use of an Animorphs cover for the leopardwere btw. There are bunch of reverse-therianthropes in d&d - wolfweres and jackalweres being the most notable, besides Golarion's kitsune - but idk if leopardweres have ever popped up
I have read one of the novels associated with this setting. It was AWESOME! I'm glad to see Ravenloft making a comeback. The 2nd Ed version was pretty awesome.
Yay! More Ravenloft! (What follows is mostly rambling about my own head-canon.) I think of the Dark Powers - those responsible for the existence of the Domains of Dread - as being unfathomably alien and powerful entities investigating the nature of evil. (In game terms, something akin to the elohim of Pathfinder Bestiary 4; thematically, the Excalbians from the Star Trek TOS episode "The Savage Curtain.") Why only evil? Because there are so many different ways to be evil. It's a bit like what Tolstoy wrote: "All happy families are alike; each unhappy family is unhappy in its own way." Of course, the Dark Powers are purposefully left vague, so each DM can flesh them out as much or as little as they see fit. Another poster has made the intriguing suggestion that we, collectively, are the Dark Powers, having made Ravenloft for our own amusement. Happy gaming!
We definitely need more Ravenloft material. I love the setting overall. I get being in a horror setting for too long may drain your players or numb them to the effect the domain is supposed to have, but the idea / concept is so interesting. Also, it looks like you bought the Ravenloft compendium on DM's Guild. I am glad to see I am not the only fan of such an awesome reworked and compiled resource
Thank you. I've been trying to plan something better than the typical Haunted House for this year's Halloween adventure and you just inspired me. I'm not sure yet, brainstorming, but something along the lines of Tristan and Isolt being held prisoners in separate carnival parade wagons has turned them into evil anti-paladins until they're back together. I'm pretty sure I can come up with all sorts of creepy weirdness as the players travel in the carnival until they figure out they have to get the potion drinkers (drinkees?) back together to end the curse. For everyone reading this, it might seem early but Halloween happens fast. It is August 8th as I write this comment, it's time for DM's to start thinking about what to do for Halloween... In the meantime, happy gaming to everyone, may you have some weird and creepy games!
I love the use of the ruby from The Sandman. Perfectly in line with Ravenloft's nightmarish qualities and the scenario from which those images were taken.
Surprised you mentioned what Isolde is but not exactly how she affects the pseudo-reality of the demiplane itself. The full extent of the Twisting was one of my favorite touches, including technically innocuous manifestations like the creeplings.
I had an idea to homebrew a campaign that's a mix between this and curse of Strahd. A carnival castle the teleports to new realms, enticing travelers into its walls. There, it would be a carnival with wild games/shows but most of the workers would be undead (vampires). Most of the people in the carnival have glossed over eyes, and look to be from several eras. The lord of the castle would be a mix between Strahd and the dean from Blue Exorcist- almost like a Dracula jester. I'd like to get both these books, feel like I could make a pretty dope story out of them
Great vid, man. Really gives me some ideas for sessions. I'm not running Ravenloft but a post apocalypse homebrew and the appearance of a carnival at one of the fortified towns will be a great way to break up an otherwise somewhat bleak setting.
Everyone always says Spelljammer was the whackiest first party setting for D&D but to be honest Ravenloft was really the only one that felt like it had a wildly different tone from the other settings
It is ironic that quite a few months ago I ran a homebrew Ravenloft short campaign regarding the Carnival - though I made extreme amounts of changes and it was similar in name only. My caretaker was a Rakshasa named - Danda the Magnificent.
The carnival has become my parties oasis in the shadow fell. If offers them a chance to avoid shadowfell despair and gives them a way to leave ravenloft domains. Creatures I have used in the litwick market so far are sprites, recaps a green hag. And a protean scourge.
Wow, this set could help with an idea I had. I was thinking of doing a campaign where everyone starts normal in the real world, then goes in a haunted house or hayride and is transported to Ravenloft or a Ravenloft-like spooky world. Perhaps this carnival could be the set piece of the campaign! Or at least part of it.
Really liking this video what with the Carnival's inclusion in the new book. Definitely interested what Hermos is doing alive in the domain, a trusted advisor of Isolde. Maybe if your campaign leads to Isolde freeing herself from Nepenthes, Hermos takes her spot?
An obvious reminder to DMs is you can feel free to make the truth about Isolde anything you want to if you want to shake things up and/or have players who know the written lore of the Domains Of Dread. Personally I'd love to run a story in Barovia where the latest reincarnation of Tatyana decided to try & break her fate by starving Count Strahd by setting fire to the villages in Barovia & attempting to kill every other mortal in the realm. More than simply forcing Strahd into starvation what would be the effect of his torment engaging in atrocities that would make her an even worse Dark Lord?

I'm just wondering how this becomes a threat to the players. Aside from hunting down and bringing back The Manbeast as long as you don't attack the carnies it looks to be a simple creepy carnival.
I think that's the point. It's a way to traverse the domains, but then if you start causing trouble they might not be pleased. But it's not a domain of dread like the others are, it's a slight reprieve from the constant threat of most of the other domains. It's creepy but they aren't there to cause trouble. Imagine you're in barovia, dealing with werewolves, hags and vampires, Leviathans in the lake, and then a carnival rolls up. You'd expect it to be another trap. Then again, solving problems for the carnival folk could present its own challenges. Maybe someone dangerous is hiding amongst them, well, someone more dangerous anyway. Or maybe you have to find that one dude's reflection and bring it back.
7:40 Well, truthfully... (Spoiler here) The Amazing Soulless Man (or Tindal, to his friends) thinks that is the case, but in truth, he has it backwards; he IS the escaped soul of a dark wizard named Tindafulus who botched one of his diabolical spells. Oddly, Tindal is a far more benevolent person than Tindafulus is.
What the Soulless Man's reflection is getting up to, no one knows. Hey, avoiding spoilers is one thing, but outright fibbing is another thing entirely. I won't spoil either, but the Carnival book, and the adventure in it, do make it clear what's up with the errant mirror self.
This domain seems surprisingly altruistic, for a dread domain. Actually, it dosn't seem evil at all, which actually makes me kind of suspicious of it. What dark secret are they hiding?
Correction (and spoilers ahead): . . . . Isolde isn't actually the Darklord of this Domain of Dread. The Darklord is, in fact, the sword she wields, which is intelligent.
I thought about doing an edgy body horror game. It would be similar to the Arcade Gun Cabinet, "Carn-Evil." It would be related to a character who had his mind scrambled from Lich mind wipe nonsense.
The wild fact that this carnival and the Witchlight carnival’s stories are intertwined is wild! Would love to see a video expanding on this story in the future!

The Amazing Soulless Man (or Tindal, to his friends) thinks that is the case, but in truth, he has it backwards; he IS the escaped soul of a dark wizard named Tindafulus who botched one of his diabolical spells.
Didn't know Ravenloft had Rattatas.
It's a surprising place.
Do “dance of the dead or spellfire.

Isolde isn't actually the Darklord of this Domain of Dread. The Darklord is, in fact, the sword she wields, which is intelligent.
Vampires can be seen in mirrors , but not in silver mirrors cause silver is bad.
Ee-soul-dah. 😂
I thought about doing an edgy body horror game. It would be similar to the Arcade Gun Cabinet, "Carn-Evil." It would be related to a character who had his mind scrambled from Lich mind wipe nonsense.
