Mister Foster is very astute in saying it was a great experiment and we can learn things. One of the things we can learn is that cars are not very stable over 25 mph when they steer from the rear! Any slight oversteer and the car wants to go sideways! Before I got my architect's license I was able to attend a 2 day workshop given by Mister Fuller and it was quite a learning experience and I respect his contributions to technology tremendously.

Maybe Bucky wanted people to slow down and take a more natural course on nature, I don't know. Everyone's talking about high speed and it really gives off the idea that speed equals greatness and that's not always true. Most of the accidents by car are caused by uncontrolled speeds and high ones could lead to death. You could see the fact that the car was a handfull at high speeds or you could take it as a warning Bucky left to our interpretation.

the vehicle was initially to be a 4D transport, flying vehicle! the 'car' was to test the transport's ground taxiing ability. = experimental. If more had been built it could have been further improved and refined.

I've no idea where you got the idea that it handled well at high speeds. It would be more accurate to say that it handled well in certain regimes at high speed. Any skidding due to road conditions or driver error would be VERY difficult to deal with, perhaps even impossible, given the gear ratio of the steering. What it really needed was steering available at the front wheels and the ability to lock and unlock the rear wheel (with steering) to retain the remarkable low speed maneuverability.

Well I have plenty of tail wheel aviation experience...and I am here to tell you that the center of gravity is completely utterly different than in an aircraft. You would do well to study the construction, and view the films of the Dymaxion car operating at high speed. before blowing your warning horn so loudly. Perhaps this is why airplanes don't have horns !

I'm always amazed by how people look at this car and say it's bloody brilliant. There's no doubt that it had some quite clever ideas incorporated but it had some glaring faults. One of them was that it drove and handled like a bag of shite. Anyone with any aviation experience could have told old Bucky that it would be handful at speed. It's a groundloop waiting to happen with all that front overhang and rear wheel steering. Some relatively simple changes would have made a big difference.

Raulddd92, if Buckmaster didn't intend the car to be driven at speed then that makes the aerodynamic body meaningless. At low speed aerodynamics have very little effect on performance, stability or economy.

Foster is talking rubbish. All the publicity this car got at the time was all second hand. No one ever road tested it independently. Fosters claims of top speed, fuel economy, even seating capacity, are total fiction. The car only had four seats, film of a dozen children piling out were shot from the side so they could climb in the other side! With the centre of gravity behind the front wheels and ahead of the rear steering wheel the cars natural inclination will be to swap ends, as taildragger aircraft, which have the same C of G arrangement, do. The cars we drive today have the C of G behind the steering wheels and ahead of the rear wheels, meaning the car is naturally stable. Imagine a dart. Weight at the front, feathers at the back: Naturally stable. The Dymaxion is a dart with feathers at the front and the weight behind. How do you think that would fly?

+Karl Bassett a car with 4 seats can easily fit 12 kids in it ...

+Karl Bassett Were talking about a car that saw a fraction of the development that other cars had. Given proper development, it could have been great.
