Just did this with our lead Porsche Tech at work about a month ago. He didn’t think it would work at first, but I came out and did it for him. Didn’t know it was a common thing to do, I just thought of it. It’s pretty sweet and saves a ton of money for euro diesel owners and helps the environment a bit at the same time. Win-win.
Thanks for the tip. Obviously the nice thing about the small bottles is that they are 100% sealed, so no spilling is possible. Please explain where I get this wrong: To use your funnel, you (1) screw it in to the DEF screw nozzle, (2) fill the funnel with DEF, (3) push the funnel down as normal and watch the DEF flow into the tank. Eventually you get to needing less than a liter, so you (4) fill the funnel as normal, and (5) press it down. No longer a closed system, (6) the weight of the DEF in the funnel (actually, air pressure on a larger surface area than the hose) will push the fluid through the hose once the tank is full, and I presume you'll see fluid simply circulating through the funnel, out of the hose and then down into the tank, and this is your clue that the DEF tank is full and to stop pressing the funnel downwards. Correct? Also, this makes putting the vacuum hose on and turning it downwards is a MUST.
Also if you are a road service tech. The 2.5G DEF bottle, once thoroughly cleaned out, is AWESOME for keeping a few gallons of ALL fluids. I keep 2 jugs each of coolant, motor oil, ATF and 4 of hydraulic oil on my rig. Plus my 5 gallon buckets.
That looks really handy! I once had to refill adblue on a benz E class, the previous owner failed to do so and spilled adblue all the way around the tank in the trunk. Ofcourse he waited a few days to get to the garage and it became like a weird crystal but i have never had any skin irritations because of it though...
Absolutely love how at least 80% of the commenters are well aware of the ChrisFix jokes. The universe feels a lot smaller and friendlier at moments like this, you know.
For my VW‘s if I ever needed to add oil etc., and if sometimes I can’t find the stupid funnel I’ll just cut up a water bottle at the base of my Leatherman take the cap off tippet upside down and Wala, works like a charm.
Thanks for the video! So much cheaper to buy the one small container and then the larger 2.5 gallon containers from vw. Saves big $ for cayenne diesel ad blue top offs and refills. You da man.

Recently bought a 2013 Touareg TDI and have been looking to do this mod myself. Where have you found the bottle for $5? Everywhere I've looked, they are about $15.
Random question. Does VW use a different version of this than commercial trucks? Reason I ask is I know a lot of people don't know what DEF or AdBlue is. If it's all the same you can get it at the pump at most truck stops now. It's usually a lot cheaper around $2.75 a gallon.
Cheapest place to get DEF is a truck stop where they have it at the pump. It's a pain in the ass because its typically with all the big rigs and you'll have to pay in side to get them to turn on the DEF pump - but a fill up costs 5 bucks instead of 20. Also you dont waste any plastic.
I wish they made bigger reusable containers like that. I'm able to take the top off without breaking the neck so I could refill them but the containers are small.
We used to do this may years ago, but the DEF would still want to splatter out as we pushed down on the bottle. When that happened we pushed down with a shop rag spread over the top of the bottle's open end which seemed to reduce on mess. Now we just sell as many of those bottles as the vehicle requires. Despite diesels never being popular in California, they are now even less so, probably due to diesel gate. I've never understood the "fuel economy" rational for buying a diesel when the cost to repair these cars far outweighs any fuel savings that can ever be realized. Just my observations.
It's actually a lot less expensive to maintain many of the diesel vehicles vs gasoline vehicles. In Europe this is shown to be true, maybe in America they don't know how to work on diesels or overcharge? I've got a 35d X5 and all the techs say it's one of the best engines BMW had, little to no maintenance.

VW started using it in 2012. I think some diesel trucks used is before that. but its a newer thing within the last 10-15 years. There may have been vehicles before that.
So maybe you have the answer or know the answer to this question. Both Mercedes and VW/Audi had diesel engines in the states and all used the AdBlu liquid. However VW and Audi engineers were able to give the customer the AdBlu tank and a spare tire. Why couldn't Mercedes engineers figure out to do the same? If you had a diesel Mercedes, you did not get a spare tire in any form.
