You guys have done an amazing journey(not over at this point) and it reminds me that trekking into the unknown is about dealing with pain and stress and you have to embrace it otherwise you are done. This was one of the challenges faced by the English during the Franklin expedition and the Inuit called it perfectly by commenting that the English didn't know how to starve, which was a normal condition for the indigenous peoples in the Arctic. My wifes ancestor was Chief Factor James Anderson and he was tasked by Lady Franklin to go in search of the Franklin expedition and his diary account of the trip to the Back(fish) river is astounding. I found a copy of it in my late father in laws records and it blew my away. The contrast between how the indigenous peoples travelled the country and the Europeans methods are staggeringly different. The natives travlled light and fast while the Brits dragged heavy sledges laden with over a ton of food and gear and overloaded birch canoes. The search actually found the Franklin expedition. Some of the team saw masts poking out of the water but because it was so late in the season they were afraid that if they told
Anderson they would lose the weather and perish in the cold, so they kept it to themselves and it was only many years later that the story came out. No paper canoes for you guys. If that had been a FRP canoe the result would be quite different.👍👍

I used to work in mineral exploration up by Nain at Tasisuak Lake. Beautiful country! Lots of bears! Labradorite is the calcium end of the plagioclase feldspar series. That’s what’s gives it the blueish colour. Awesome trip guys and great editing on the videos. Loved them!

Pinning the canoe and slipping on the rocks are two reminders that safety is of utmost importance. The way they travel in the Yukon is you travel such that you reach your destination, how long it takes is irrelevant. Those experiences you had probably focused your mind a little more clearly. Definitely humbling to the ego but an education for the mind. Great video, great adventure and a group that was able to absorb the ups and downs of a wilderness expedition.

I was on the edge of my chair watching this episode. It must have been really rough enduring all the pain and suffering that you guys went through. It is a testament to your resolve to see this trip through to the end. The Labradorite reminds me a little like finding Jade or Opal with the colour and such. I hope you brought a few samples home with you. You never know it may be quite valuable to maybe sell and finance your next adventure, I have to say that I am totally amazed with that canoe as I thought that it had actually split in two when you where showing one shot of it when it was on the rock. Looking forward to the next episode especially with the teaser you posted in your comment.:-) Tom

The whole scene leading up to the pinned canoe was really well done. The editing and music conveyed a real sense of peril. I knew what was coming, but the reality of how quickly things went south and knowing how high the stakes are; it was terrifying to watch. That could have easily been me at some point out in the bush. Glad to see how the Esquif held up, gives me a little comfort having a T-Formex canoe myself.

I was taught if there is any doubt about the rapids, take the trail. No one ever drowned on a portage. That day could have been a lot worse than it was. Happy all turned out ok. You guys did a fine job on the boat wrap. You recovered your outfit, and got your boat unpinned. I wish you would have filmed how you did that. Z-drag? You had a lot of boat visible and stayed close to shore which was good too. There’s no shame in pinning a boat, getting bested by a river that’s been moving since the beginning of time, leaving a boat because you don’t have the skills to recover it, there’s a little bit of shame in that. I don’t know how to attach a photo of how MAINE Guides tie in gear, but it’s rock solid, I just don’t know how to send it to you.

I wasn't thinking too clearly while all of this was going on. I had actually completely forgot I was filming with the GoPro on my head which was the only reason we caught all of this. I ended up turning it off at some point not knowing how long it was going to take us to recover. Once all the gear was out of the boat it wasn't too difficult to flip the canoe with 3 of us working on it.
