She had the same addictive cuteness and charm as Annette Funicello. But, Melanie had a 'pretty girl next door' sweetness that drew you into her plaintive world, made you feel as though she knew that you were personally searching for your own answers; comforted by her companionship through her music. She is a beauty, indeed. An angel in human form, with a perfect smile that told you that she was your trusted friend.
I love all of your songs, but the “Nickel Song” is definitely a favorite! Here’s hoping you’ll sing it at your online concert this Saturday January 30! Can’t wait!
Thank you for posting this little known gem of a performance. Melanie combines elements of the 1950 Teresa Brewer hit with her own composition in a masterful folk/jazzy/scat way. Beautiful innocence with a sultry undertone.
My highest love devotion, respect to Melanie. Perhaps more than any other artist whose self~written songs made me believe in the music, and in her. I even began to believe in my Self, as a Musician, from learning her albums at age 11 on...Melanie, you are the best Folk~Stinger I ever found, to my tastes, and I sure do hope to see you perform in person, and thank you up close. You gave me attitude, chords, and poetry just when I needs it so much. Thank you!
you should check out the Miley Virus video version of "look what they done to my song ma" with Melonie singing backup. it's actually pretty good, and I'm sure Melonie needed some cash, because people ain't buying tears anymore. I sort of hate how condescending Miley treated her, but overall it sounded good. ...and Melonie looked pretty good too, for being even older than I am. I didn't even know she was still alive. ...by the way, no matter how I tried to spell Miley's last name Google spell kept changing it to "Virus", not my fault, I gave up after about 10 minutes, maybe Google knows something we don't? .. or is Google purposely altering my words to control the world?
San Francisco wanted be what Melanie from Astoria Queens was; flower child innocent without losing the urban smarts. Rolling Stone came east and never left. NYC isn't doing so good now but I still like listening to you sing.
Wow I'm sooo glad to find this, I subscribed right away, Melanie if you ever read these I'm 19 and we're studying about you and some others from that time but you're hands down my favorite, I hope to see a concert from you sometime, live would be great but online will do, much love Desi💕💋
I remember this episode from the "Mike Douglas Show ".This was back in 1976,she was very pretty (still is, if she's reading this ), she looks like Linda Ronstadt, they could have been twins (although Linda is from Arizona ).This is one of her lesser known tunes.
"Brand New Key (The Roller Skate Song)" was #1 in the US near the end of '71. But, yes, those were the only Melanie songs ever in heavy rotation. "Look What They've Done To My Song, Ma" got some decent radio play, too, but not a lot. Some of our finest musicians and songwriters are a little Country, a little Rock 'n Roll, and a little Folksy and did indeed find it tough to become as well known as they should or could have in any one radio station niche in the US. Many of these artists flourished greatly overseas from the US where their music was simply referred to as 'American' music and not attempted to be pegged into any particular genre of music. What we refer to as simply Country or Country and Western here in the US is also often referred to overseas as simply American music.
We had a light rock station in Los Angeles - KNX-FM - that had her in regular rotation. We were lucky. The problem Peter J describes above was solved by that station. Great station to do homework to (I was in college).
@@peterj2439 In Los Angeles, KNX-FM was the answer. A lot of good artists who did not really fit a niche were played on that station. I got into a lot of artists that I would not have heard, otherwise, thanks to them.
It was a strange time. Musical genres were changing so fast that it made your head spin: Auditorium rock, glam rock, punk rock, disco, MTV.... Somehow, Melanie remained true. Her later albums were brilliant, although she is best known for her early work, which is true of many musical artists of the era who developed a career of their music. Though not big hits with a great deal of airplay, the songs and performances abide. They were trying times for musical artists. No one true to their muse was spared.
I wonder ... Did Merv's producers ban the 2nd verse of the song for being too political? And did Melanie add "I'll do anything for you ..." as a protest (that went over their heads)? But she did slip "to fix a lot" into the ending. Or am I overthinking it?
I'm 63 and have loved her music since I was a teenager!
Absolutely the best female voice in her era, hands down, and definitely the cutest. The only female vocalist who could scream it out with class. Love!

She fills up the stage... all by herself. That is the definition of and entertainer.
I love Melanie. I've been a fan since 1970. The looks, personality, attitude and of course the voice

RIP beautiful Melanie. You are missed!
I have all her albums and have been in love her with since I was 12

If you look for the Miley Virus video, it's the happy hippie version. Not the regular vid.

It’s nice to see her standing up.

Lesser known? Hardly!
She has Linda Ronstadt beat by miles.
Doin a mash up in the 70s! WOW
RIP Melanie
can I quote you on that ?...-i need a 'Dime'...lol
⭐
Love her... I wonder if she ever got to chill out with Janis Joplin?
She outclassed that drug addict.
Ob es so oder so oder anders kommt.

I don't think any radio station played any of her songs except "Lay Down". They could not figure out if she was country, rock and roll or folk.

Peter J bitter bad and ring the living bell got some play here in Tennessee around 1973 - it was on many juke boxes

look a 12 string by the piano.

Need a little help once in a while you know..
Well I don't mind that their luck
But it seems like they always win
Everybody knows that game is fixed, the poor stays poor, the rich gets rich...
Pour quelques centimes je te chante une chanson version fr
Mike Douglas is supposed to be a pro, he shouldn't point-out performers notes. :-)
He was just teasing. Mike Douglas was a successful singer himself, before he became a much more successful talk show host.
Please, get over it

Good question. Half of the song, and its true grit were excluded.
This makes no "cents" lol, but I've never liked not liking a song this much
