It really says a lot about the quality of the writing and characters in this game that it can bring out such honest emotions and reactions in the player.

I don't know if anyone mentioned it, but Soldier's peak is worth going back to. Especcially for the party chest. You can store items in it. And not only that, it will also upgrade the tier of your gear to suit your current level.

@@LieraPlays Yes, but you need to reload the game for it to work. It won't work if you just put something in there and try to take it back out again.

I will never forget the first playthrough I did with the natural bodies mod (nudity mod because I hate that ugly underwear) not realizing the default male mesh was in an...excited state. So I get to Ostagar and see Cailan strung up, standing at full attention. It really ruined the moment 😂

Hi Liera, great video. Return to Ostagar is a great little dlc with cool armor and weapons to boot.
If no one's mentioned it, the mage's chest requires the key u get from the hungry prisoner in the cage u can find upon first entertaining Ostagar at the beginning of the game. U have to pick the right dialogue options when talking to him to get the key.
U can also return to the area where u took the Joining and recover the Chalice u drank from.
Also noticed that u seem to regret leaving Leliana behind but, and I apologize if I'm repeating something someone's already mentioned, u can change between ur companions without needing to be in camp or leaving a zone to travel on the world map. I unfortunately have no idea how to do so on PC as I play on console, but opening the Radial menu while not in combat allows me to do so.
Finally wanted to mention, if no one else has, that if u return to Wardens Keep u'll find a chest that u can use for storage and if u place armor and weapons inside it then save and reload the game the armor and weapons inside will tier to ur level (so steel weapons would become silverite if ur at a high enough level to have that tier available).

Funny thing is, I did get the key, and it was quite... unique :D Not sure what happened to it, or maybe I just walked past the chest I needed.
Don't worry about repeating what others said! :) I do forget that you can change companions on the fly, it's stuck in my head that I can only do it at camp. I'll do better!
Oh I got the chalice btw. Right at the end :)

As far as switching out party members while you're exploring an area, there is an icon along the top called Party Management or something similar, that should let you swap out party members. So in this case, you could have swapped out Sten for Leliana.
Return To Ostagar is actually a really nice book-end to the prologue and especially the events that occur in the early part of the game. Not that there is ever a "best party" (at least as far as I'm concerned), but you pretty much had the most relevant party for this DLC. Or at least the members who have the most things to say about what had happened there in the beginning and what was happening there now.

    • @LieraPlays
      @LieraPlays  2 місяці тому

I don't know why i have such a mental block against switching party members without going to camp. I know it's possible and perfectly acceptable as long as the button is available, but my mind never goes there unless I'm in camp. I blame BG3.

    >"you should know me better by now"
I really don't know what you mean. XD Oh, wait... totally unrelated fact but a squirrel just passed by my window with a funny look on his little furry face! Well, I'm sure it doesn't mean anything :)
    >0:08
Funny... I don't remember Orzammar being that cold and snowy, quite the opposite in fact as the whole place is heat up with lava. :D
    >0:14
As lovely as Jerry is, you couldn't find a squirrel? :)
    >2:34
Just be happy it's not a chamber pot. Who knows, maybe Avernus has a sick sense of humor :D
    >7:58
Thing is, the special thing from Duncan that you may indeed find as a gift for Alistair is not even at Ostagar. It's part of the vanilla game...
    >11:21
If you say that because your character is an Elf, Andraste did fought for everyone. Well except the Dwarves because they were never really interested in human affairs so the whole thing with Tevinter was not really a consideration for them although they lost trade revenues in the events and that was possibly their biggest grief, but these were quickly replaced with trade with Andraste's followers so all in all, they kind of shrugged the whole thing off...
Shartan was an Elf with an Elven army, and he fought at the side of Andraste. When the Chantry finally turned against the Elves and created the Circles to "pen" the mages, Andraste was already gone and in no position to object to any of that. It's almost certain though that both animosity against Elves and Circles of Magi came from people misreading (quite voluntarily) the words of Andraste. A lot of people tend to do that, taking sentences and twisting them until the result fits their own conceptions and view of the world, and damn the consequences.
Dalish don't revere Andraste, but even them acknowledge her as a hero that played a big role in putting an end to the slavery they suffered at the hands of Tevinter. And they don't blame her for what happened after that because... she was quite dead by then.
So yes, I think everyone included the Elves agree on the fact she fought for everyone, even if the reality is often more complicated than that. I mean, her crusade didn't really start with the only goal to put an end to slavery. She wanted to kick Tevinter Magisters' asses first and foremost. Liberating the Elves (at least a lot of them) was a fortunate side-effect.
And by the time of DAO, slavery is still pretty much a thing in Tevinter. Only slavery on a global scale was halted with Andraste's crusade.
    >28:26
The banters between Wynne and Alistair are the best here. Especially tailored to this DLC. And Dog has some reaction too. Although he doesn't talk, he participate occasionally.
    >31:15
The quality of the armor and weapons you find in this DLC depends on the level you are at when arriving at Ostagar. For the best results it's preferable to do the DLC when you're level 20 or above; you can get dragonbone quality. The reason why Cailan's geaves are only red steel is because you're around level 15.
That or you have to use a mod like The Winter Forge allowing you to upgrade the material quality of your favorite weapons and armors (I wouldn't recommend it on a first playthrough though because it impacts too much in terms of gameplay but it's a very nice mod for later playthroughs).
    >35:27
The worst part of it is that once the DLC is over, you cannot go back to Ostagar again so any chest you cannot unlock will remain locked forever... or until your next playthrough at least.
However, you didn't notice that the party picker button is always available here (not greyed out) so you can switch companions in this DLC almost at any point. You could have brought Leliana back to confront those horrible locks. :)
    >35:47
That was always a problem in DAO (and to a smaller extent also in DA2). The interaction triggers are not always were you expect them to be. When you don't seem to be able to interact with something and think you should be able to, the only solution is to switch to tactical view and try again. This way the trigger should be visible. You'll have this problem quite a few times in Awakening too.
    >36:45
I think Cuddlebear has seen worse by now. He even killed some other mabaris since he joined you.
    >38:52
Well, maybe it's for the best that you're not able to pick the locks on the other chests :D
Oh and, by the way, by finishing Soldier's Peak you gained a storage chest in which you can put the stuff you don't use but don't want to get rid of. That should free up your inventory. Although your hoarder spirit might not agree with the idea. "Yes, but if I leave that thing I never use here and I suddenly need it just after? That could happen! And that would be awful!" :D
Don't worry, I'm kinda like that too. :)
    >43:31
It is harsh and if Cailan hadn't been a king, not having a child wouldn't have mattered. But this is the monarch game and through history one of the main goals of a monarch was to give an heir to the throne. It's the reason why Napoleon divorced Josephine to marry the daughter of the Austrian emperor after all (possibly one of the greatest mistakes he ever made, maybe he deemed it politically necessary but emotionally he never truly recovered from that; "Josephine" is one of the last things he said just before dying, that kinda speaks volume).
The only thing that gives me pause here is that Eamon assumed that the problem was with Anora, not Cailan, like if the inability to produce a child always fell on the shoulder of the woman. It's the kind of thing where two people are involved and both can be a problem.
    >44:45
That blade is described in great details in The Calling because it was gifted to Maric by the King of Orzammar and he killed a great number of darkspawn with that blade. Darkspawn seem to be repulsed by its mere presence and striking them with it cause them great pain.
The runes on it are supposed to glow blue when it is unsheathed... Certainly one of the best weapons ever created in the Dwarven forges, although its precise origins are lost to time. It's ancient at any rate. It's also supposed to be dragonbone but there, due to your level, you just got the red steel version.
    >47:12
Ah, the lack of a rogue and her ability to detect traps before it's too late. Let that be a lesson: never get rid of Leliana. :D
    >47:52
Uh, no. It was the trap. The ballista fired but it was way off. And both Alistair and Dog were out of its sight at that moment, hidden by the wall. Interestingly you didn't trigger the trap yourself.
    >48:35
Although this is possibly grating on your nerves (all this inaccessible loot) I can say that the stuff in those locked chests is basic enough. I know, it's no comfort when you're a hoarder :)
    >"Maybe it's best to be a rogue yourself".
I played both and I still prefer mage. But of course there are ways to turn a mage into a rogue (at least for the purpose of opening locks). In other RPGs that's called multi-classing, in DAO it's forbidden, but there's always the console. ;D
And then there's Inquisition where each class has its own "thing" to do so you systematically need one of each class in your party, but it's a matter for a much later date...
More to follow... again... I know... incorrigible :)

      >1:01:57
"A lot of them" in that case actually means a tiny fraction of their forces. But we'll keep that for when you reach Orzammar, which will happen eventually, someday... Right? :D
In any case that's what armies do. You conquer a strategic location and if you have the manpower for it (and darkspawn certainly do) you leave forces to guard it. The last thing you want is the enemy finding a way to get around you and grab you from behind without you noticing because you left no one there. Ostagar is a choke point between the Korcari Wilds (where most of the Darkspawn emerge from the Deep Roads for this Blight) and the rest of Ferelden so that makes sense to me that they would leave a force there to protect the access to the staging area where their forces gather and prepare for the final assault. What doesn't make sense to me is that they didn't leave an even bigger force than they did.
Human armies also have logistical reasons in mind. You seize that kind of location, better to use it to store and organize the delivery of supplies to your soldiers on the front lines. And of course in that case you need a real force to protect your supplies and the people managing them. Not sure that applies to Darkspawn though. It must in some way but possibly not as extensively as us.
Darkspawn in Honnleath (where you found Shale), those were puzzling. The village had absolutely no strategic value whatsoever and was too small and with too little protection to serve as a depot for an army. So leaving forces to guard it had no meaning. It's doubtful the Darskpawn knew that Shale could join you, which would have been the only reason for them to stay there and try to prevent that. :D
      >1:03:44
Orzammar is your place if you want to see darkspawn of all types including more shrieks than you care to find and some type of darkspawn you don't even know exist. You can't swing a cat in the Deep Roads without hitting a darkspawn. Not that I really want to swing a cat anyway! :D
There's a reason why old Grey Wardens go there to die. They know they will inevitably find darkspawn and they know they will be systematically outnumbered.
      >1:09:20
Because you're a hoarder, remember? XD
      >1:09:46
I don't think we're mentally seeing quite the same image there haha Not having ever been in Orzammar, you have possibly never seen a "nug" but you eventually will (they're a big thing with Leliana and when you get to Orzammar you need to talk to her -- inside Orzammar, not outside). I don't even dare to imagine what you've been thinking with this "Nug Crusher". Please, don't tell me you saw "Nut". :)
      >1:12:53
That's part of the Qunari discipline. Even if you're fazed, you pretend not to. Don't show enemies your weaknesses and all that. :D
      >1:20:36
That interaction always crack me up. You have to hand it to Wynne, she hides her cards pretty well. Just looking at her, and the way she generally talks to you, you'd never guess she was so into that kind of things (it's not the first time she broaches the subject with Alistair). Although to be fair she's far to be the only older woman I know of interested in younger men... sometimes much younger. And somehow it's always the ones you think the less capable of entertaining the idea. :D
But, oh my, I cannot even begin to think of the reactions to this talk across a part of the political spectrum if the situation was reversed, with Wynne being a man and Alistair a woman. Instant Armageddon!
      >1:22:20
Anyway, Duncan's sword and dagger are not the gift Alistair expects. Could have been but they are not. On the other hand, Maric's blade was his father's and it already killed its fair share of darkspawn so it's only fitting.
      >1:23:20
It's a standard random gift that dog has a chance to find no matter the location. Not linked to Duncan or the DLC at all. He just happened to find it now. :) For some reason I always offer that ball of yarn to Sten because of something Leliana discusses with him. It seems he could use it for... training purpose. haha
      >1:25:37
Well, things come around don't they? Here you are at the end, eventually finding the beginning. Fitting... :D
Oh and it's a gift for Alistair, obviously, just not THE gift he expects to remember Duncan.
Anyway... you're finished with the DLCs now. No more left to get distracted with (at least not during the main campaign, they are plenty left for after). I'm sure you can find something to distract you again though. Quite a few possibilities still. Morrigan's mother, Sten's sword... Oh, and a High-Dragon that is still pretty much alive, looking at you with glee and thinking "She'll never dare". Not to mention a number of side quests still pending... your journal is full of them...
Shoot! I shouldn't try to give you ideas for distractions! You already have enough as it is! :D

Isn't that the common assumption during those times though? And during modern times too i suppose haha. I can somewhat understand it during their time though due to ignorance.

      >due to ignorance
I'd say that it's more due to the certitude of some males that nothing can be wrong with them. I'm not talking for all of us but certainly a part of us are still pretty much thinking that way.
      >Orcs are near at hand! :D
Something like that. haha In fact precisely like that as the runes on Maric's blade only glow in presence of darkspawn or the darkspawn taint. And the precise color is described as "sapphire" because of course, just saying blue wasn't enough. It's a special magical sword after all! :)
That makes one think that the dwarves forged it especially to be used against darkspawn. So the sword could be as old as a thousand years -- as the dwarves encountered the first darkspawn long before the first Blight was even a thing. Nobody really knows. It possibly had originally a fantastic name too, but that was also lost to time. So since the day Maric found it in the Deep Roads and King Endrin in Orzammar subsequently refused to take it back, it became just "Maric's Blade" (Maric had a distinct lack of imagination it seems).
For some reason though the runes glow yellow in the game which is not in line with the lore. And the "weakens nearby darkspawn" property (which should be similar to Miasma but always applied to the blade and only for darkspawn) is sadly bugged and never worked in vanilla. I'm afraid that the blade in the books is more fantastic than the one in game... Still very pretty though -- "sexy" Zevran would say XD
      >Well...
If that's supposed to leave me guessing then the job is done. I could guess wrong you know! :D
