I bought this second hand, it is the best lens i have in my arsenal, i use it mostly for my astrophotography with a tracking mount, no other lens can compete with it atm in the 50mm range.
I love how thorough your reviews are, i bought the canon 55-250mm and the decision was made easy after watching your review. Brilliant 👍🏻 and nice choice of image samples
Christopher, I like that UA-cam channel you mentioned too, but I really don't understand where Kai is coming from, saying this lens is not bokehlicious. I consider it plain awesome (just like it predecessor's was), except of course in situations with extremely busy backgrounds, but that is common for EVERY lens. Great review - and great channel. I love to watch your unbiased reviews. Keep up the good work.
I know this is an old test now but, I just bought this lens and am using it on my Canon R3, The image quality is superb and the focus is lightning fast
Chris, can you tell whether its bokeh is really good for 1.4 or not? I mean, I have read people say that it's blur is very 'busy and sharp'....So should I upgrade from the Canon 50 1.8 STM? Is it's bokeh better than Samyang 50mm 1.4 ? Also is it's autufocus better than 1.8 STM?Really looking forward to ur reply☺ty
Wow what a review! As of December 2020, this lens still has the No.1 best DXOMark for Canon 5D Mark IV of 39, second comes Zeiss Milvus 1.4 at 35! That is a clear 4 point lead in the front .. Wow! Can't say the same of other Sigma lenses but this 50mm seems like a catch in 2020 especially a good 2nd hand one for Canon DSLRs lovers.
Dear Christopher, I just love your elegant and very useful reviews. I have been following them for some time now and I would like to ask a question about this great Sigma lens. Would you recommend this lens for shooting indoor sports? Would it be a fast lens for photographing high-speed movements, like the ones in Crossfit and weightlifting? I was considering Sigma 85mm but in my Canon 70D it could be a little bit tele for the environment of a Crossfit box.
Hi Chris, I have a question. Im using 80D with Sigma 17-50mm F2.8 & Canon 50mm F1.8. Should I buy Sigma Art 50mm or 85mm ( for portrait)? The way I understand that is 85mm may little tight with 80D but will benefit down the road when I use full frame Thank you in advance!!
So I have this lens for about a year and it truly delivers sharp images, absolutely the sharpest lens that I own. Though.. I am going to sell it. I came to discover that sharpness isn't everything and I noticed that it was kind of a drag taking it with me, the lens is too heavy and bulky.. I didn't shot as much pictures with it as I wanted because of the weight. Now I would be all over this lens if it came in a lighter form factor but that would probably be physically impossible to achieve for a manufacturer.
Dear Christopher what do you think, is that lens good for new Canon 90D 32mg censor? I'm considering to buy folowing Combo for 90D body: 18-35/1.8 and this 50/1.4 lens for portraits.
Would you recommend this or the 35 art? I heard that the 35 art gives some distortions for close up portrait. I have the 6D and planning to do portrait and just general purposes. I've used the 35 art but never this one.
Hi Christopher, Great review!, my only cocern is if I get the same problem as you did regarding autofocus. Is that something that I can fix myself with the canon 5D Mark iii? Thanks in advance!
Hi Christopher, I have two questions please. The first is you said you had to alter the front focusing in your camera, does that mean it isn't compatible with the hub? Also, like yourself, I shoot both full frame and cropped sensor, do you think this lens will be good enough when used on the 7DII to make purchasing an 85mm for the 5DII redundant? I know the cropping in a camera isn't the same as a longer focal length but because of the distance I will have to zoom out with my legs in this case the case for a '1 lens 2 focal lengths' has slightly more validity. I've not used 'normal' focal lengths much before as most of my photography has been landscape and wildlife, but unfortunately due to deterioration in my health I've been driven more indoors. I'm also having a slight upturn in demand for corporate, commercial and family portraits albeit on very small scale as its all I can manage. Thank you in advance.
It should still be compatible with Sigma's hub. As for 50mm on APS-C or 85mm on full-frame - it's really up to you! It might be slightly better to have 85mm on full-frame - if it's the 85mm f/1.8 (or 100mm f/2) then you will get just a little more background separation, and the benefits of using a full-frame camera as well, of course
Hi , I have this lens with nikon d750 - pictures are sharp , clear , full , but the lighting which i need to make my pictures better, im looking for some good lighting for furniture photography shooting / indoor and outdoors. Recommend some good lighting. Regards
Hey Chris! I have watched pretty much all of your videos and they have helped me a lot to decide what lenses I should buy, I bought the Canon 24-105 f4 L and a Tokina 11-16 f2.8. I am a grat fan, and I just wanted to ask you one question that I'm pretty sure you get a lot, Where do you get your lenses for review from? Are they borrowed, do you own them, or do you rent them? I was just curious about that, thanks =)
Hi Chris! Awesome review! I was wondering, between this lens and it's 30mm 1.4 art counterpart. Which would be better for general use and portraits on a 70D?
Christopher what type of clear filter do you recommend putting on this lens? Do I need a ultra slim to prevent vignetting at F1.4? or does it not matter?
Hi Chris! I love your reviews! I'm planing to buy my first dslr the Canon 760D when it cames out in April, but I can't decide which objective is better for portrait shooting this one or the 17-70mm sigma DG OS HSM Contemporary. Could you help me to decide ? Thanks!
Excellent Review, as always. I just bought the Sigma 50mm and had a little heart attack when I heard the autofocus on my C100. I combed the internet for an example but barely found a thing. Was gonna return it when I checked out your video and am so grateful you provided an example. Thank you so much. Also, are you still using the lens, and how has the performance been? Thank you again for all your reviews.
Just to test and move on. If you're using continuous AF then you will probably be hearing some clicking as the lens microadjusts. That's common for a lot of lenses that don't use a stepping motor autofocus system (STM)
Did you test the zeiss 50mm planar f1.4 ze? If you don't, try it. I enjoy mine for about half a year now and I would live to see how it compares to the compition. Excuse my English. I am not a native speaker. :)
Hi Chris ! I do have a ( Canon EOS 550D APS-C ) & would like to purchase this lens as they say it takes really sharp images, would you recommend it since I'm using APS-C ?? What I'm using at the moment is the EF 24-105mm f4 L IS USM, comparing the two which one is best ?? Thanks
+tonizuz It depends on what you to shoot. I started out with a 600D and a 50mm f1.8. I switched to the Sigma 30mm f1.4 and was really glad I did -on APS-C 50 was too narrow for general use. If you want to go wider still and don't mind the size/price, the Sigma 18-35mm is crazy good but will dwarf your camera.
Hi Chris! When I saw your review two years ago, I had forgotten the count of the number of times I had watched your reviews. They are just awesome. Need your help for my portrait photography and little bit wide angle coverage. I have Tam 85mm SP 1.8. Can you please suggest me which lens to go for (5d Mark iv) . This Sigma 50 mm 1.4 art lens or 24-35 F2 art lens.
I was wondering if i should buy this lens. I have Sony A58 that has APS-C sensor. So im not sure what should i expect from this with my camera body. I am considering to upgrade for a full-frame at some point. And was going to use a prime lens for a portriats and some item shots. Sony has some own lenses but most of them are too expensive for me, or the cheap ones are too noisy for my taste. Im asking because i could get this lens as used and its in good condition but im not sure. Any thougts ?
+Jaymes Harris Full frame is great. I would actually suggest the opposite as Jaymes Harris. Lenses will last a lot longer than camera bodies, and the investment staying power is high if you keep your gear in good working condition. Camera bodies age out and completely lose their investment value constantly because of technology growth, but some lenses actually end up appreciating in value. I've always gone by the rule that you should spend at LEAST as much on glass as I would on a camera body. I've consistently bought full frame Canon or Nikkor AIS glass (with canon EF mount converters) and it hasn't steered me wrong yet. Lenses can make our break your gear capacity. Creativity first, as always, but when it comes to camera I'm a 'lenses first' proponent.
Had the sigma 50mm Art, first copy would not auto focus and 2nd copy same problem. Also, the short throw on this lens makes manual focus at infinity difficult....you hit about 1/5 times.....no confidence in nailing focus manually (on lens), different if on LIVE VIEW....but even then, throw is way too short. Went with Zeiss Milvus 50mm f1.4....way better construction, sealed, color matched lenses, better micro contrast and better edge performance. It has a very nice manual focus.....but if you're not into landscape (sports, etc), it's not for you.
I’m a fan of you for a long time. Every review of you is super useful for me to decide which lens should I buy. Now I’m a little bit confusing between this lens and Tamron 45mm F/1.8 SP. In your opinion, which one will you chose for all purposes?
Thank you so much for your fantastic review on this lens!! I recently bought this lens too, and I am using it on my Canon 6D body as well. However, I do have one question regarding the use of this lens. With such a big aperture and so few auto-focusing points on Canon 6D, how do you manage to get your subject in focus while you are doing a street shooting?
Dear Chris, Great vid again. Many thanks. I really appreciate your recommendations. I myself considering selling my canon 50 1,4 ( favourite) and 85 1.8 ( which I use rarely) and invest in a sigma 50 1,4 art. I need fast focusing as I am doing concert photography in low light, and events photography. Do you think I will not mind? thanks
Hello, I'm considering buying the Sigma too. I now have cheap 50 1.8 from Canon and I struggle with autofocus here. When it's a little bit dark I just can't get a properly focused image. As I sometimes shoot some proms or weddings inside, this is a huge issue. Did you buy this lens? Are you happy with it in this manner? Thank you!
Hi I have just bought the 35mm version , I'm thinking MAYBE to swap for the 50mm , would you say there is much difference in sharpness enough to swap or not ? , this was after watching your 10 sharpest lenses video , I know the 35mm was 7th and is a great lens and I do like the 35mm focal length ,also I'm thinking of getting the samyang 135mm f2 from that review as well although I do like the look of the canon version from flickr pics even though was rated lower from your video but will prob go for samyang for price and still looks very good ,I was torn between 135mm focal length and 85mm but after research I think I prefer the 135mm focal length ,which is great as is cheaper lol anyway , great videos , very helpful , thanks , p.s I may not get the 135 yet as have a 1ds mark II and prob need a canon 6d for higher iso ?
@@christopherfrost Hi Christopher , thank you for the reply ,I think I will stick with the 35 as I have the canon 50mm 1.8 II I think my next lens will be the 135mm Samyang . I was just reading how good the canon ef 24-70mm f2.8L II is , and was thinking would it be worth but I would really like to stay with primes , I am just a hobby photographer only been doing 6 months but have learnt A LOT thanks to the internet and great videos like yours , I started with vintage lenses , like zeiss from prakticar cameras and also zeiss from medium format cameras adapted to my canon 1ds mark II (before 500d) trying to get best quality for low price ,anyway thanks for the reply , it seems every time I find a lens I find another one for more money , haha , I only started with £140 invested now I'm upto a £1000 but I have some good gear just trying to get a complete set I would be happy with and then take lots of photos I think the sigma 35 and the Samyang 135 will fill my needs, although I am slightly torn between 85mm Samyang and 135 but I think the quality of the 135 is better and I think I prefer that range , anyway sorry for the long message , thanks for your time thanks :-)
Great review indeed, I do have one question.... how do you know where to adjust the focus on your camera, ( I still don't own the full frame...) thank you again for your wonderful reviews! Best wishes from Uruguay.
Chris, thanks for the review. Having used both, in your opinion which lens is optically better, the sigma 50 art or the 35 art? I know that they're similar, but I have seen conflicting views on this, and I can only trust your eyes :) could you share your thoughts with us? Thank you!
This lens completely blows Canon's 50mm f/1.2 L lens out of the water, and it's half the price! The only downside is that it's definitely a heavy 50mm lens, so something to consider if one wants to travel as light as possible. I always used to think of Sigma as a lesser alternative to Canon's L-series lenses, but I've certainly come to see now that a red ring doesn't mean it's necessarily the best lens.
Hi Great video. For my 70d if I intend to get the 18-35, how much will I cry if I got the outgoing Sigma 50mm 1.4? If you were in my position what's your opinion?
Sorry, if I buy the old sigma 50mm 1.4 would I regret it. Because I want to get the 18-35mm and 70-200L iS If I get the new 50mm 1.4Art I will not be able to get the 18-35mm. In your opinion should I just get the new 50mmArt. BACKGROUND I shoot video (church services) with 18-135STM and 30% stills-night,street,landscapes,weddings.events I have sold all my lenses
Many thanks, I did decide to get the s18-35 and I will probably get the old sigma 1.4 after looking at numerous RAW Images and trying it out myself. Keep up the good work. May it prosper you and bring you Good Success.
Got my 18-35 from SLRHUT for £500 including taxes and free shipping, it arrived in 3 days from USA. I'm loving it. The day it arrived I had a family in house portrait photo-shoot booked. After much testing all morning I found it sharp, but inconsistent at 35mm. But after incamera micro adjustment it ended up being the main lens for the evening shoot. I have been getting 99% percent accuracy. I took 92 shots with this lens, of the couple in their living room with 1 YN568 speedlight rogue flash bender, silver reflector and a jelled rotolight LR48 LED for tones and mood and I deleted only 2 images(because of framing not the lens) IT IS THAT GOOD. Great light conditions make this king of the cropped(samurai sharp). I can boldly say after a week it's better than the 50mm f1.2 on my 70d. I. Had nothing to correct/edit in Lightroom 5 except framing. Workflow time cut by half. I delivered the images... An easy reference for my work... Video it's crispy(I will do more video tests)... Gwaaaan Sigma, big ups SLRHUT.co.uk
Does this lens have focusing problem? I bought the sigma 35mm 1.4 art, it has huge problem with focus issue. Also I want to ask is there other 50mm you would recommend? I'm using the Nikon 50mm 1.4, but it's not very sharp.
Hi Christopher, Without concern about the focal length, which lens sharpest between sigma 50mm f1.4 DG HSM ART and sigma 35mm f1.4 DG HSM ART in widest aperture? thanks..
Just got this lens in 2018. I wonder if there has been any quiet engineering updates to it to address some of the CA you mention. Even so, it's going to be my go to for portrait work until I can afford a full frame setup. The Canon 50mm f1.4 is in bad need of an update. Better optics, better coating, and either STM or nano-USM, and if possible IS. If they did this and kept it around 400-500 USD, it would be one of the best selling lenses they ever made. Even if it was 600 at release but then rebates and incentives got it down into that price range, yeah, it would sell. Canon might not be impressing lately, but if there is one thing they are good at it is making inexpensive but effective lenses.
I don't mean changing the optics, I'm talking about engineering. The longer anything is manufactured the easy it is to make it, and as time goes on engineers sometimes come up with little tweaks to the setup that can improve the way the item works. For lenses this will usually result in a more recent copy outperforming an older copy, but usually just in some minor way. It might be a bit sharper, or quicker to focus, or less CA, less noisy, etc. I'd be sure that Sigma is no different than anyone else, and these little engineering updates don't usually end up as new versions, they are usually quiet about it so that people don't freak out over not have the most recent revision in spite of it not being anything of real circumstance. Then you have shit like Canon releasing a mkIII of the 70-200mm and literally telling everyone that it really isn't any different optically. Or the converse of that where they replaced the dodgy IS module in the 17-55mm F2.8 without calling it an update (another lens in need of an update). The fail rate on those was pretty high in the beginning, now, I don't really hear about it anymore.
I haven't heard anything I'm afraid - maybe get in touch with Canon, I'm sure they'd be happy to tell you if they've quietly improved any of their lenses.
This review and DXOMark's ratings on this lens pushed me to buy it. I shoot a lot at 50mm on an APS-C Nikon, so this lens will be replacing my Nikon 50mm f/1.8.
I bought and used 3 of them back in the day but all sent them back. They were all over the place with focusing. Couldn't get the calibration right either because it had massive front focus at random times... when it nails AF, it's so sharp but 40-50% of the photos were unusable. It sucks.. no other lens has better sharpness than the Sigma when it focuses just right. It's been 2 years since then... Perhaps I might get one again with the newest Firmware updates from Sigma.
Just like to say you would make a great salesman as I’ve now just ordered the sigma 😂guess I’ll have to give my partner who’s just starting to get into photography my recently bought canon 50 mm stm which I just don’t like the tacky scratchy cheap feel to that lens so I’m now awaiting delivery for the sigma looking forward to playing with it on the R6 👍👍👍
Just snatched one of these for $300 US. Been using it for a couple weeks and the ONLY issue I can realize it's the focus scale window has a small crack in it.
It depends on how your lens is focusing really, it'll be a bit different for most lens / camera combinations. I just played with the AF fine tuning until I got it right :-)
Thank you for this new video.....wow yor words are a temptation for my wallet....I woild like to own this amazing lens. Chris did you ever tested the Rokinon 85mm 1.4?
Hi Chris, I've got a quick question for you. I'm switching from my old APS-C Canon to the Nikon D750(Full Frame and way better). I was 100% sure I wanted a 50mm 1.4 because I do tons of portraits and the images you find on 500px.com if you search for "Sigma 50mm 1.4 ART" > Category: People are outstanding...but! I've heard a lot of photographers saying that the 85mm is still the go-to lens for portraits. What do you think about it, given that Sigma is said to come out with a 85mm 1.4 ART and there's probably a 135mm in the works too(filling a gigantic gap in Nikon lineup that everyone always envyed Canon)? I mean, I've seen some great results with extremely creamy bokeh when shooting "close" to the subject and even a bit further with this lens, the only thing you seem to loose is the facial features/background compression...which is good and gives bokeh that smoother, silkier look but I don't know. I'm still pretty sure I want this Sigma(as I'll get the camera and only one lens until I really learned it well, so that means months) but there's this little voice in my head right now saying I might consider 85mm too...but I don't know yet, I could always get the 85mm 1.4 ART from Sigma when it comes out if it's on par with the 35 and the 50 but would that make sense to have two, so close lenses for the same thing?
+AndreCorner 85mm is slightly preferable for portraits, and very preferable for head shots, if you're shooting full-frame. I actually prefer a 135mm lens - I'm currently using a Samyang 135mm f/2 and getting lovely results :-)
Christopher Frost Photography Thanks Chris! One thing I love tho is the "3D effect" I see so often in this lenses portraits. Check these 500px.com/search?q=Sigma+50mm+1.4+art&type=photos&categories=People&sort=relevance And expecially this 500px.com/photo/98250037/alone-by-manuel-preiß I mean, with the 85mm the backgrounds would be more "big" and the facial features more flat right? I know it's something typical of the 85mm but these shots shows the look I'm looking for, which is something an 85mm would limit right? On the other hand I also love telephoto compression and bokeh but 85mm is less for what I was used, so I think I'd wait for the Sigma 135 ART(which is said to be in the works) to get the same mm which Canon users seems to love...the 85mm feels like a half way to me, but I don't know if it makes sense and if the examples I linked prove me correct, I'm still figuring out.
+AndreCorner The 85mm will 'flatten' your subjects face more and give a more out of focus, compressed background, whereas the 50mm will include your background a lot more in the picture :-)
+AndreCorner I wouldn't be so quick to assume that Sigma will be pushing a new 85mm soon. They already have a very good non-Art offering that I doubt we will see improvement on. The 135mm though - like you said, there is a big hole for Nikon users, it seems like a no brainer. Perhaps they haven't released a high aperture Art lens longer than 50mm yet because of autofocus reliability issues.
Brendan Tonkin true that, the fact that you need a dock and most ART users has it makes it quite clear they have some stuff to solve, but to be honest first party lenses aren't always perfect either and they don't provide docks anyway.
Nothing beats the Leica 50mm F2 Summicron APO. Not for another few months anyway, of course! Though, it does cost more than 5x as much, with a stop less light. But, you don't get much better optically than a good F2...
I am interested in landscape photography and I need quite a wide lens and I am interested into getting a Nikon camera. I want the absolute sharpest wide angle lens. What do you recommend?
learning music video production. i bougth canon 5d mark iii. do i need this lense or canon lense for my video production. like how many lense do i need to start up video production. help please
+zion darl Different lenses for different purposes. e.g. you can't zoom with a prime lens, although they allow a shallow depth of field and got a nicer bokeh. If you want this look, then go for it. If you want to use different focal lenghts, you may take a zoom lens or you have to buy several prime lenses. Maybe you should visit channels for videography and not photography. But in the end it all depends on you and what look you are going for.
I bought this second hand, it is the best lens i have in my arsenal, i use it mostly for my astrophotography with a tracking mount, no other lens can compete with it atm in the 50mm range.
That’s nice to see as just bought one and looking forward to trying it out at astrophotography with the R6👍👍
I love how thorough your reviews are, i bought the canon 55-250mm and the decision was made easy after watching your review. Brilliant 👍🏻 and nice choice of image samples
Despite being a Canon lover, I have to admit that this lens looks and feels much better then the canon f1.4 50mm.
Canon badly needs to update the 50mm f1.4
My toilet rolls look and feel better than the Canon EF 50mm f1.4. It's not a high bar.

Thank-you for this excellent review, Christopher! I just picked up the Sigma 50mm 1.4 Art Lens for my Canon shooting, and love it!
I just order that Sigma 50mm f1.4 Art lens....Next week i'm gonna get it... 500€ cheaper than Canon 1.2L and still more sharper than Canon =)
Dear Chris, Did you have any problem with autofocus accuracy when using this lens on your 6D body?
This is such a good lens, I love it. This next to the 35mm and 85mm Art lenses of Sigma.
The colour rendition of skin tones are just 🤯🤯.
I dont understand how corners are less sharp in 70d than in 6D ....shouldnt it be vice versa as 70d is a crop?
thanks for the review, how does it compares to the previous sigma 50mm f1.4 you tested 3 years ago ?
Don't take Kai too seriously he's just a fanboy.

Great video Chris! Quick question I purchased the Sigma 50mm f/1.4 EX DG HSM last year so is it worth upgrading to this Sigma 50mm f/1.4 Art lens? Thx
If you like to pixel-peep (like I do) then yes!
Thank you for responding. I am going to order one.
i have this lens too. i love it! i too is looking at the ART lens my self .. might end up getting the 35MM art first
Dear Christopher what do you think, is that lens good for new Canon 90D 32mg censor? I'm considering to buy folowing Combo for 90D body: 18-35/1.8 and this 50/1.4 lens for portraits.
It should be pretty good but I can't guarantee anything!
Hi Chris,
How much does it breath comparing to the 40mm?
I currently have the Sigma 20mm 1.8, would you recommend me adding the Sigma 1.4 Art 50mm lens?
Would you recommend this or the 35 art? I heard that the 35 art gives some distortions for close up portrait. I have the 6D and planning to do portrait and just general purposes. I've used the 35 art but never this one.
Any 35mm lens would be a little bit wide for portrait photography on a full-frame camera
thank you so much for all your hard work - SOO helpful! also I love your collection of Christian books! are you a C.S. Lewis fan too?!
Hi Christopher,
Great review!, my only cocern is if I get the same problem as you did regarding autofocus. Is that something that I can fix myself with the canon 5D Mark iii?
Thanks in advance!
Rodolfo | Redhouse Yes, the 5D3 has AF micro-adjustment capability.
+Christopher Frost Photography Thank you Christopher, I truly respect your opinion and appreciate your help.
Hi , I have this lens with nikon d750 - pictures are sharp , clear , full , but the lighting which i need to make my pictures better, im looking for some good lighting for furniture photography shooting / indoor and outdoors. Recommend some good lighting. Regards
would this be a great portrait lens on a Canon 70D?
Great Review, I am really looking forward to your comparison.
Hi Chris!
Awesome review! I was wondering, between this lens and it's 30mm 1.4 art counterpart. Which would be better for general use and portraits on a 70D?
Anthony Apostol For portraits, the 50mm. For general use, the 30 or 35mm
Christopher what type of clear filter do you recommend putting on this lens? Do I need a ultra slim to prevent vignetting at F1.4? or does it not matter?
Any decent multicoated filter should be fine I think
Been waiting for this!!!
When I saw this video a lot time ago, I though that having this lens was a dream for me, and now in 2 days I will buy it, life it amazing XD
Hi Chris!
I love your reviews!
I'm planing to buy my first dslr the Canon 760D when it cames out in April, but I can't decide which objective is better for portrait shooting this one or the 17-70mm sigma DG OS HSM Contemporary. Could you help me to decide ? Thanks!
For portrait shots you need a lens with a wide aperture. So, the 50mm f/1.4 is perfect
Not still using it, I'm afraid
Christopher Frost Photography were there any issues or were you just using it long enough to test and moved on?
Just to test and move on. If you're using continuous AF then you will probably be hearing some clicking as the lens microadjusts. That's common for a lot of lenses that don't use a stepping motor autofocus system (STM)
Thank you so much and thank you again for all your reviews. They are very thorough and informational.
Did you test the zeiss 50mm planar f1.4 ze? If you don't, try it. I enjoy mine for about half a year now and I would live to see how it compares to the compition. Excuse my English. I am not a native speaker. :)
I'm considering reviewing it :-)
Thanks
+tonizuz Take a look at my reviews on both lenses, and you'll see how they perform on APS-C :-)
If you need wide angle then 24-35 would be the perfect option really. The Sigma 24-35 is a big, heavy (but excellent) lens
Thank you Chris!
Any thougts ?
kabobliha it will work perfectly however, i would consider upgrading your body to a a77 or a77ii before investing so much in a lens
Hi Chris, I have a Canon 80D, will this be a good candidate for portraits, or should I go with the sigma 50-100 art?
They'd both be great, in different ways. Watch my review of the 50-100 for more info
They're both amazing but I'm biased because I love image stabilization, so I'd go for the Tamron personally
the best review, congratulations!
50mm f1.4 art vs 35mm f1.4 art.
I was trying to figure out which has better image quality on my 5d mark 2.
The 50mm is very slightly sharper
Thank you so much for your fantastic review on this lens!!
I recently bought this lens too, and I am using it on my Canon 6D body as well. However, I do have one question regarding the use of this lens. With such a big aperture and so few auto-focusing points on Canon 6D, how do you manage to get your subject in focus while you are doing a street shooting?
MrNinainaide Just have to practice, really
Dear Chris, Great vid again. Many thanks. I really appreciate your recommendations. I myself considering selling my canon 50 1,4 ( favourite) and 85 1.8 ( which I use rarely) and invest in a sigma 50 1,4 art. I need fast focusing as I am doing concert photography in low light, and events photography. Do you think I will not mind? thanks
The Sigma will be an improvement :-)
than you for your answer. you are great
Hello, I'm considering buying the Sigma too. I now have cheap 50 1.8 from Canon and I struggle with autofocus here. When it's a little bit dark I just can't get a properly focused image. As I sometimes shoot some proms or weddings inside, this is a huge issue. Did you buy this lens? Are you happy with it in this manner? Thank you!
Nice review, looks like another winner.
Excellent review Chris! Just wondering how you shoot at wide apertures in brightly lit environments?
Just do it, really! If the environment is /really/ bright then you can use an ND filter
The 50mm is slightly sharper but really you should just decide it based on the focal length you need
Daniela Argandoña You need to have a camera with Autofocus Microadjustment as a feature. If so, it'll be in the menus
Thanks a lot! Christopher, I wish you a nice weekend!
Chris, thanks for the review. Having used both, in your opinion which lens is optically better, the sigma 50 art or the 35 art? I know that they're similar, but I have seen conflicting views on this, and I can only trust your eyes :) could you share your thoughts with us? Thank you!
Yasser Sultan I would say that the 50mm lens is a tiny bit sharper :-)
Christopher Frost Photography thanks, Chris! You're awesome :)
Hi
Great video.
For my 70d if I intend to get the 18-35, how much will I cry if I got the outgoing Sigma 50mm 1.4? If you were in my position what's your opinion?
I don't quite understand your question...
Sorry, if I buy the old sigma 50mm 1.4 would I regret it. Because I want to get the 18-35mm and 70-200L iS
If I get the new 50mm 1.4Art I will not be able to get the 18-35mm.
In your opinion should I just get the new 50mmArt.
BACKGROUND
I shoot video (church services) with 18-135STM and 30% stills-night,street,landscapes,weddings.events
I have sold all my lenses
Allan jere You should probably get the 18-35 just to keep your camera bag more versatile
For my 70D
This lens, or 18-35?
For general purpose, portrait and maybe some wedding here and there.
For general purpose, the 18-35
+Tans Jauharil or get the 35mm
Does this lens have focusing problem? I bought the sigma 35mm 1.4 art, it has huge problem with focus issue. Also I want to ask is there other 50mm you would recommend? I'm using the Nikon 50mm 1.4, but it's not very sharp.
I talk about focussing in this review. I've made a comparison video about 50mm lenses which you might want to see on my channel
Thank you for this. No lie, just found this online for 70 dollars. Getting it for my canon t7. So excited. Never had a sigma before.
70 dollars?! I hope it works okay
@@christopherfrost yeah me too haha, found it on sale.
what is the update on this
Hi Christopher,
Without concern about the focal length, which lens sharpest between sigma 50mm f1.4 DG HSM ART and sigma 35mm f1.4 DG HSM ART in widest aperture? thanks..
The 50mm lens
whether sigma lens has auto focus issue (back & front focus)?
I can't remember which one focussed more accurately - I think the 35mm lens was more accurate
When manufacturers change the optics they tend to do an official re-release
Great sharp lens once you get the focusing sorted
I bought and used 3 of them back in the day but all sent them back. They were all over the place with focusing. Couldn't get the calibration right either because it had massive front focus at random times... when it nails AF, it's so sharp but 40-50% of the photos were unusable. It sucks.. no other lens has better sharpness than the Sigma when it focuses just right. It's been 2 years since then... Perhaps I might get one again with the newest Firmware updates from Sigma.
what camera did you use ?
Superb review!
Hi is this compatible with the canon t7i/800d
Definitely
Hello! Can a mic on top of camera grab that Auto focus noise, or just the internal camera mic
Unfortunately I have found that mics attached to the camera's hotshoe can quite often pick up unwanted autofocus noise
Just snatched one of these for $300 US. Been using it for a couple weeks and the ONLY issue I can realize it's the focus scale window has a small crack in it.
Great deal
Whould be interesting to see U revisiting this lens on 2020 cameras 😉
I like your desk camera clock
Hi Chris, your reviews are awesome. Can you please share settings for adjusting lens on 6d. Thanks!
It depends on how your lens is focusing really, it'll be a bit different for most lens / camera combinations. I just played with the AF fine tuning until I got it right :-)
How does this compare to the older Sigma 50 1.4 EX?
A lot sharper
Thank you for this new video.....wow yor words are a temptation for my wallet....I woild like to own this amazing lens. Chris did you ever tested the Rokinon 85mm 1.4?
I'm hoping to test more Samyang (Rokinon) lenses soon :-)
nice review, hope u do the comparison video soon
Check these 500px.com/search?q=Sigma+50mm+1.4+art&type=photos&categories=People&sort=relevance
And expecially this 500px.com/photo/98250037/alone-by-manuel-preiß
I mean, with the 85mm the backgrounds would be more "big" and the facial features more flat right?
Will this lens fit on a 77D?
All Canon mount lenses made since 1987 will work on your Canon APS-C digital SLR camera, except EF-M lenses
Nothing beats the Leica 50mm F2 Summicron APO. Not for another few months anyway, of course! Though, it does cost more than 5x as much, with a stop less light.
But, you don't get much better optically than a good F2...
Afraid this does beat it. Sorry.
I saw Southgate, Bath there! Do you live in Bath? It's historically picturesque and great for all lens types, depending on where you are in Bath.
I go there occasionally :-)
+Christopher Frost Photography Awesome! Thanks for the reviews and the like.
Another great video
I only wished you tested equipment other than the canon platform.
Maybe one day. I'm tempted by the new Fuji cameras but, I don't have any spare money right now :-(
Is there any chance for you to review the Otus in the future? Maybe a rental..? A comparison of these two would be very, very interesting!
No chance really I'm afraid! It would be super interesting, but even to rent, it would cost me a fortune, and I'm just a student these days
Alright. Thanks anyways for the reply!
Björn Willimzig I am planning a massive 50mm comparison video, comparing 6 lenses at the same time...!
Sounds great! :)
I have a t5i. Can this model adjust for front/back focus issues with this lens?
You need to read your camera's manual / check online to see if your camera features autofocus microadjustment
I have the 24-105 F4 and it pretty much stays attached to my D750. Amazing lens
I am interested in landscape photography and I need quite a wide lens and I am interested into getting a Nikon camera. I want the absolute sharpest wide angle lens. What do you recommend?
I don't know much about Nikon really. You should look into their UWA lenses
thomas smith 20mm 1.8G nikon or 14-24 2.8 nikon
Tokina 11-20 2.8
So Chris did you go and bought this amazing lens??or you just tested it?
Just tested, unfortunately!
does a lens like this perform well on a crop sensor? thanks
Watch the video😂
ye, digitalrevtv disappointed me when they hated this lenses, they are pretty fckin awesome
learning music video production. i bougth canon 5d mark iii. do i need this lense or canon lense for my video production. like how many lense do i need to start up video production.
But in the end it all depends on you and what look you are going for.
chrisbackstage and
I own this lens, i use it on my D850, it is amazing.
Can you make a video how to fix the back or front focusing issue?
Look up how to to autofocus microadjustments
Christopher Frost Photography Sigma has a USB dock for adjusting the lense also.
