  • Maestro played by Jinkx Monsoon was so fun to watch, they gave us some clues about Ruby's birth and who might have been there.

Doctor Who often has a lighter campy energy, but Space Babies and The Devil’s Chord are definitely on the more extreme end of that spectrum. The show also goes to darker and serious places, including episodes later in this season.

Doctor Who has always been bonkers. What's important is that it delivers fun and occasional tears.

This episode ties back to the 3 specials that were aired prior to the season, November and December 2023. The reference to the Toymaker comes from those episodes.

Yes the premise of Doctor Who is meant to be all about the fun of being able to travel all of time and space, but the serious episodes are built towards slowly through the season. I’m loving your reactions so far. I’m so excited to see your reaction to episodes 4,5 and 6 😊

I love this episode. Maestro is glorious. The whole season is anomalous for reasons that have not been made entirely clear, yet, and musicals numbers are not usually a thing. I would have been happier with the song and dance number if it were a better song. I had no problem with the town celebrating the return of music, like in Footloose, celebrating the return of dancing to the town.
Doctor Who has always been sort of a mix of genres. You can be in some space fantasy on a foreign planet a million years in the future or in some gothic horror story in the 19th century. Your emotions will run the entire gamut.

There's Always a Twist at the End is actually very subtle foreshadowing

So im guessing theres a teist at the end of the series? Dont answer that haha

    • @RutabegaNG

I don't know that I would call it subtle. It was random enough that I figured it's got to be foreshadowing something.

So, without giving spoilers, the last time the Doctor defeated one of the Gods, the God's residual power remained for a short time after, and the right people could take advantage of that. My take on this ending is the Doctor did tap into Maestro's residual energy, and had 18 years of missing music to fast track. The song at the end is primarily twist, but it does also have hints of many other musical elements from those "musical wilderness" years. So my thoughts are the Doctor used that song to fast track music back to how it should have been in 1963.

they said in a behind the scenes video the banishing of maestro and the release of music back into the world all at once was the explanation for the musical scene

Maestro was the best thing about this episode but yeah the musical number at the end felt a bit goofy. I guess it could be seen as all the music coming back into the world.
This season definitely starts to get more serious from the next episode onwards, but yeah in general it feels lighter in tone than the 2005 version, which had its silly moments too.
Btw the Doctor used to travel with his granddaughter Susan back when the show started in 1963 so that’s why she gets a mention.

      Maestro was phenomenal!!!! 😍😍
I dont mind silly moments. I actusllt like it but i guess this one is on Disney so maybe they made the beginning light. But i eill welcome a more serious tone for sure hahaha
The 2005 one is definitely on my list 😁😁

My daughter is a major fan of Jinkx so obviously this was her favorite episode ... till 'that' episode came along.(can't say cause of *spoilers*) Even though I like musical numbers, this one was not my favorite. Yet I do have to say, every episode from this season so far, got better and better - for me that is - and I hope it will be the same for you. And ofcourse, after when established if this show is indeed your cup of tea, and in waiting for the next season, you might want to dive in the first series starting with 'Rose'.

I agree with you I liked the episode and the Maestro right up until the Doctor broke the fourth wall and the ending really took me out of it it was unnecessary after the defeat of Maestro they should had cut it there with the Doctor and Ruby leaving the TARDIS for the next adventure and left it there.

Yes!!!!! I already dont like musical numbers but this one felt like there was no reason for it. It was so out of place.

This is the episode i have real issues with - mainly the dance number at the end for noreal reason (as said in other comment it's being taken as music flooding back into the world, i m less convinced).
Maestro is a great villian and for me the high point of the episode.
The song that annoyed Maestro will make morev sense if you've watched the church on ruby road - which i think you sad you have done now.
Fo me the gags aren't working hthis season - they do usually get sprinkled in the show to balance the seriousness of most of the stories but the show can tackle just about anything comedy, drama, heartbreak, hortor, mythology but not until now (really) musicals....
There's a few easter eggs dotted around this episode
    - the old woman at the piano is June Hudson, the costume designer on the show during the 4th doctor era in the 70's...
    - playing the piano during the twist number is Murray Gold, the show's composer
    - and the 2024 scene echos a scene from a particular 4th doctor story about which il'll not comment further ...
Loving the reactions and hope you did see Ruby Road and continue to start back from Rose in 2005...

    • @AnotherReactionChannel_

Yes i watched it this week end and im getting more context from it. Im mad i didnt know that the christmas special was basically episode 1.
That musical ending was not for me at all hahahaha. Even if it was about music coming back....it felt just placed there for no real reason.
Maestro, what more can I say im in love. They really brought this episode to life for me.
I am planning on watching the okder doctors on the channel. I have heard they have more of a serious tone so im looking forward to that. I have a feeling that since this doctor seems younger in age and its on disney its a lot lighter than the others seasons maybe?
Thank you for watching im glad you like my reactions....im slowly getting more comfortable with them. 😆

    • @binrotheheretic8174
      @binrotheheretic8174 8 днів тому

Yes, theres a feeling that they've deliberately made the doctor lighter for the disney audience - theres an explanation but it would be a spoiler 😀
Ruby Road feels like a decent (but by no means the best) episode 1 of an era so Space Babies was a real disappointment - but having thought about it, i think they've deliberately done it for an initial win of the "typical" disney audience.
This series does get more serious as we go along😀
One thing i forgot to mention is that i think that chord John & Paul play to vanquish Maestro is i think supposed to be the chord at the end of the Beatles song "A day in the life" - famously i believe the longest recorded piano chord ever.
BTW have you noticed something other than the doctor/ruby/tardis that's in all 3 episodes so far by any chance😀

Maestro was so cringe for myself and my wife. The overacting was ridiculous. Space babies was worse than this...but either way, Maestro felt very out of place for Dr. Who. I really wish they had toned the acting down a few notches and cut the music / dance routine.

    • @AnotherReactionChannel_
      @AnotherReactionChannel_  5 днів тому +1

I totally agree with the music routine at the end but the fact that Maestro was so over the top made it so perfect for me. I live those kinds of vilains, when they feel almost cartoony.

    • @Goblin1986p

@@AnotherReactionChannel_ There is definitely though a difference between over the top performances and overacting which is what killed it for me. Like for example Neil Patrick Harris absolutely killed it with some over the top performance of the Toymaker but he made it work with really dialed in and controlled acting.
The Maestro performance seemed like they were trying too hard. It felt unrealistic and more cheesy to my wife and I. My wife made a comment to me that it felt like watching a performer at a Halloween haunted house that is REALLYYYY trying to play the part but its so obvious they are acting that it loses its immersion.
As for the entire series, yes, I like the cosplay type episode if that says anything without spoilers.

@@AnotherReactionChannel_ Maestro was definitely written to be this over the top. The character was planned already but largely written for Jinkx Monsoon based on an extreme character she plays in one of her shows that Russell T Davies went to see. Since you liked her, if you ever get to see one of her shows I'd highly recommend it, her voice is incredible, and she's hilarious. She's on Broadway at the moment, but does do world tours.
