  • Wally asks S&S Marketing Manager and shovel guy, Bruce Tessmer, to show how easy it is to kick start a Harley-Davidson motorcycle with an S&S Super E carburetor. One kick! Really!

    The real secret, never ever buy an old Harley from a guy without asking him to show you how he starts it cold. Write down what he says or film him doing it. Every old bike has it's procedure. Ignore it at your peril. My old shovel wanted primed with a couple of throttle twists and two to three kick throughs without the ignition on. Then you could turn on the switch and kick it to life. If it popped or farted at you, go in the house and have a cup of coffee, come back out in thirty minutes, apologize and try again.

    Nice to see someone who kicks the traditional easier way by straddling the bike. You don't have to raise your leg so high and if it kicks back bad enough you land on the seat. Less sprained ankles too.

    This is awesome, thanks for posting! Bought a '77 XLCH ironhead recently with a kicker and electronic ignition, and a Super E Shorty carb. Guy who sold it to me had a bad knee and never used the kicker. Been trying to nail down a consistent starting procedure to no avail. Turns out my bike is just like this one, got it on the first or second kick consistently now! 🙌

      If he never used “ the kicker “ - then how did the previous owner start it then ?

    thank you for the demonstration, a problem that i noticed with the super E however is when you want to start the bike in a semi warm state, personally i run the super e on 2 of my bikes and a buddy of mine has one to, and those are pretty solid carbs for performance no dought, however kickstarting a bike is not the stronk point of those in our oppinion, worst case is when you are at a gasstation and don't nail the first kick. You gotta turn off fuel imediately and kan be there between 30 seconds an 5 minutes kicking the shit out of a bike. Personally I don't understand what the carb wants, if you screw up, even when the bike is cold. In my mind the s&s is very sensitive and unforgiving. The best bike I had up to this point is my 49 pan with a linkert. It can sit for months on end it will always start even if I mess up the starting ritual. Same at the gas station, if i mess up that first kick it will work on the 2nd or 3rd eventually.
    Maybe you can shed some ligth on my issue, maybe I am doing something wrong, but the problems I just stated are throughout my frindgroup some already switched to a delorto because the just start so easy, but I really want to keep my s&s because the run so good down the road

    The crucial thing is to wait 20 seconds after the two squirts before kicking it. Hence the intervening ramble. It would have saved me a hell if a lot of trouble if that had been mentioned!

    The thing is I never owned a Harley that was not a kickstart. To me having an electric start would be like a super luxury

  • @trfisher78

    I have a 1997 Softail Heritage Springer with a Super E. I also installed a kick starter. Some days I can kick start it cold and others not. It seems to kick start easier with little or no kick back when it's a little lean however it tends to "diesel" when I turn if off. At rich it kicks back hard, blows smoke out of the carburetor and floods the plugs before they can fire. I was hoping you might have some tips for me.

      Assuming that you have an S&S Super E, the technique is still the same. The real key is to make sure your intermediate jetting is spot on, and that the idle speed and mixture are set correctly. If your bike is hard to kick, you may want to consider a longer kicker arm or some cams with longer duration! Also, if you are running an electronic ignition, some of them do not kick start well. Some electronic ignitions have a kick start mode that fires on the first crank revolution. That helps!

    • @slowpokebr549
      @slowpokebr549 9 років тому

      S&S Cycle, Inc Aint that the truth with the electronic ignition. I went back to points on the sporty. I thought electronic would be an improvement, that was a joke. But, we're running a CV on it with good results. My apologies to SnS. It had an old E on it that never would stay in tune. I've got no beef with the design, can't get much simpler, it was just worn to a nub.

      slowpokebr549 May we suggest that you send the remaining "nub" to the S&S Service & Speed Center to be rebuilt. They can put in like new condition at a reasonable price. Contact an S&S Dealer!

    I've tried this technique over again along with some other methods, but to no avail. All I get is kickback even after setting my static timing. I have a 1979 fxs 80 with a super E. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

    What jetting you can recommend for 80" Shovel, L3s cam, 9.5:1 CR? It starts well when cold, but when hot or barely warm cant start at all... Points ignition, and 0.028/0.70 jets now, S&S air cleaner, stock FLH exhaust.

    • @SSCycleInc
      @SSCycleInc  7 років тому +1

      Your jetting sounds about right. Make sure your idle mixture is correctly set. That is really important for starting. Also, do you have that phenolic insulator block between the carb and the manifold? If not, your carb could be boiling over! Check your float setting to make sure it's not too high. Another thing to check is that your mechanical advance is not sticking!

    • @T9117ZM
      @T9117ZM 7 років тому

      Thanks for your answer! Yes, I have that phenolic block, this is new carb and air cleaner kit, float level is checked also... Maybe just need more idle mixture adjustment. I have this screw at 1 1/2 turns now.

    • @SSCycleInc
      @SSCycleInc  7 років тому

      Take a look at this video. The idle mixture adjustment is at about 3:55.
      ua-cam.com/video/3iYqyM-B0d4/v-deo.html
      You can't just set it a t1-1/2 turns. That's just a starting point.

      Initial things to check.
      1. Is you're float setting correct? See the S&S instriction sheet.
      2. Is your fuel inlet needle and seat shutting off correctly
      3. Are you actually running a stock cam? Long duration cams can cause gas to blow out the air cleaner at full throttle.
      4. Does this bike have drag pipes? They and make the situation in point #3 worse.
