There's Zero Valve Lash on my Holden 308 - Wrong Pushrods?

  • Before I start assembling my Holden 308, another one of the tests I'm doing is checking the valve train and rocker geometry. Lucky I did, because I've found that there is variation in the free-play or lash, from barely enough to none at all, without any preload added via the adjusters. What's the solution? I'm not sure yet...

Hi Stace - thanks for your video
I think pre-buying pushrods is a bit of a lesson that everyone has to learn
it is much better to wait until you can put everything together and then measure the length you need
Can I suggest that you set the adjusters on the rockers to the middle of their range and then use the mid-lift method to get the correct push rod length
    Good luck - have fun
will look forward to your next video 👍👍

Thank you, and yes, what a lesson. The pushrods came as part of my cam kit, which was supposed to save a bit of money, but now costs more! 😂
Yep, I ended up setting the adjusters mid way to get a better pushrod length... then there's the trick of how to measure a pushrod's length...

Great videos. Try putting the lifters in a container of oil and leave overnight and they will prime

Thank you! I had left them in oil for longer than that, but it seems maybe they'll only truly prime with oil pressure? Not to worry, I'll soak them all for a week, likely, before final assembly.

Lots of chances to learn things I never expected, on account of the little problems along the way. Fun, though.

Noice. Are you rebuilding it yourself?

@staceonwheels I might just put the v8 in and hope it's OK. The ute is getting a complete makeover, which I'll be doing all the work myself.

Stace Why Do I Get The Feeling You Have Inherited A Mix-Match Engine And That's Why Nothing Works ???

Very interesting idea... it was running before I started messing with it! Personally I feel like it's just small variabilities in each component, adding up rather than cancelling each other out.

im a newbie but was wondering if the valve seat made the extra play "? say if there was a variation in depth taken during valve grind?

    • @staceonwheels
      @staceonwheels  17 днів тому +1

That's certainly a factor. The valve seats were professionally machined, with new valves, so the valve stems could be sitting higher and tipping the rocker arms more over the pushrods, giving less freeplay... 🤔
