Apparently if you find the special golden coin, you and one other get to go visit King Charles’ chocolate factory

    Chesterton's fence comes to mind.
Knowing how to think is vastly more important than knowing what to think.
'Don't know, vote no' is a perfectly reasonable position.
Especially in the last referendum in which information was intentionally scarce.
Questions and valid criticisms were ignored or actively dismissed without qualification.
The 'Yes' campaign was a highly emotive but otherwise vacuous, insult to intelligence.
The spectacular failure of which, was a shock only to those with their heads shoved so far up their own echo chambers, independent critical thought seems like an aberration anyway.
The damage they have done is a conversation in of itself.
As a person of indigenous/Irish heritage endorsing the British Monarchy is not something that comes easily or that I would do lightly. But for now, our ties to the UK, even if largely symbolic, provide grounding and checks the power of our government.
Australians are typically moderate and deeply cynical of authoritarianism, bureaucracy and wowsers of any stripe. They aren't the loudest voices in the crowd but they all vote.
Our increasingly bourgeois left-wing is rapidly becoming disconnected from their base, unfit for purpose and ready to self immolate at any moment.
You want as many checks and balances in place as possible during the shift that is well and truly on it's way.

Yes you are right I do not care about the Royalty's as I belief that this is no longer relevant for Australia. We would be better of improving our democracy than fraternising with the idea that there is a Queen or King above us. This does not mean that it is not right for England and having good relation is ever so more important today.

Re the voice. You say apathy. Perhaps our people voted NOT to divide the country...

no the royals dont cos the uk citizens tax money. the royals generate wealth and that all goes to the government and they get a small percentage of that calculated wealth to pay for everything they do or have.

Actually expected Australia to become a republic after Lizzy kicked the bucket. It would not surprise anyone 🤷 and it would not have been just Oz either. *Barbados* did it two years ago after all.

Reducing the voice referendum defeat down to apathy is either disingenuous or naive at best mate, especially considering there was significant support early in the campaign... before it turned into a crazy stretch that would upend all of civic law.

"do you still throw spears at each other?" - I do remember spearings occurring in NT sometime in the 1970's / 1980's - was it really a bad question?

    • @fledermauseimglockenturm7655
      @fledermauseimglockenturm7655 6 місяців тому +1

No, it was an entirely reasonable question.
Certain tribal practices are exempt from or have special provisions applied to Australian law.
Spears are used in certain punishment and dispute resolutions that can result in injury or death that would otherwise be criminal under Australian law.
There are many Australians that are unaware of, or would find these practices shocking.
I can't blame Prince Phillip for being curious.

Reconciliation is not dead - but changing the constitution to recognise a distinct group is not good for all. have a voice, have a treaty - parliament can do that - just not via a constitutional change.

Two criticisms. First, apathy is not an emotion. It is the lack of emotion or care. Emotion is also how apathy is most effectively treated. Second, changes to the constitution do not require a referendum. Only the votes of the federal parliament and the state governments are required. Sound undemocratic? It is. But western countries were not created to be democratic, democracy was shoehorned in later.
I do think apathy is a problem. It's an indulgence really. It's a substitute for real courage and hard work
