Today we look at how I’ve selected my personal carry revolvers, and what makes them optimal for my personal uses. Hey, I still have a Patreon, and money is cool: / gunnutsmedia
I’ll totally disagree with you about Taurus revolvers. Or at least the Model 85, which I’ve had for a couple years. Shoots well, more accurately than I can shoot it, and has been extremely reliable.
Took my first deer in '17 with a 49yd double-lung-shot with my Taurus 608 357 magnum. More Taurus/Rossi revolvers in my corral than any other rname brand.
I love my Taurus 605 .357 mag! Just got a Barsony OWB holster that holds it tight to me and my shirt falls perfectly over it for casual carry. If I am suited up, I usually deep conceal a Shield .40 in a Veddar belly band.
@@bkbutcher It's the only gun I have had break on me (the transfer bar sheered). Free four week repair job at Taurus and its been fine since. It was my first revolver, and usually the one I train people to use, as it's weight and ported 6" barrel makes 38sp a pussy cat and 357mag a thrill. Congrats on the holster, I got some universal cloth hostler off eBay that works when there isn't a scope on it. :)
I'd go Ruger Sp101 2.25" 357 over anything any day unless I feel like pocket carrying with small pockets. When the time to shoot actually arises, you can't beat the power and stable shootability of the Sp101.
I agree with the Ruger 2.25” SP101! Total package right there! That plastic LCRX revolver with a hot load is a disaster waiting to happen and I don’t trust shrouded barrels either!
Love my SP 101s. I have a 2.25 for carry. I also have the 4.25” for my farm gun. I absolutely love the 4.25 SP 101 for knocking around on the farm and woods carry. I might jump for the 3” one day after this madness settles down.
I totally agree. For what it is intended for, no other revolver compares. I consistently place 2 inch groups at 7-10 yards. I can't ask for any better than that. It has the most amazing trigger! I have mastered staging it to get that single action accuracy in this DAO firearm. Plus, it is a breeze to conceal carry in the DeSantis IWB leather holster. I forget it's there.
I have two revolvers for edc. One is a Taurus 85 in .38 Spec. with a trigger job, and I have to deliberately mis-aim to miss with it. The other is a Rossi 69 in .32 S&W Long with a trigger job and warmed-up handloads. Both have served me well, and both have gotten me out of tight situations.

I have a Taurus Tracker 627 4", .357, 7 shot. It has never failed me and is great to shoot. I have carried it concealed but wouldn't recommend it, it's still pretty big.
I really like my Taurus 856. Six rounds of 38, nice trigger and after approximately 2300 rounds later its proved its reliability. My constant companion.
+Raghnall Mac Aodh They have them. When they discontinued the SP101 briefly and brought it back they were only making the 4.2 inch guns, but they brought back the 3 1/6 inch barrel model. I've got an older SP101 in 3 1/6 inch configuration, which were just the old .32 H&R Magnum guns with the chambers reamed out for the longer .327 Federal Magnum. But they are out there, they are available, and it definitely is one of the sweetest carry revolvers I've come across. Little rough around the edges but it's an excellent caliber, very versatile, and easy to conceal.
Both work, it’s just a matter of personal preference. Everyone wants to be tactical, i tell people to be practical. The most important thing is having a gun that you can use effectively, and carry comfortably, those are more important than magazine capacity or caliber, some guys think they need to carry a Glock 17 with 3 extra mags on them, if you are comfortable doing that than great but I’m not, and I’m not that worried about how many rounds I have on me, I’m perfectly comfortable walking around with a revolver and 6 rounds of 357 mag or 38 special, if I ever get in a situation that requires me to shoot more than 6 rounds Statistically I’m dead anyway. I think a single action 45 colt is an excellent home defense or vehicle gun, again if you can effectively and comfortably use it.
I was trained with a S&W Model 10, with a 6" Barrel and carried it as my Duty Weapon for 10 years. I love Revolvers and I sometime carry my S&W Model 638 snubby in a pocket holster which I am comfortable with as a self defense gun. I also carry my Glock 43 or my Ruger LCP II in a pocket holster. I am thinking of adding one more revolver to my collection and it will be a 6 shot all steel gun but I have not yet decided on a Model or make. I will always have one or two Revolvers in my collection!
I carry a RIA M206 .38spl. I am really happy with it. I have carried 1911 .45 while a boarding officer and Baretta 92f while an MP. The M206 trigger in double action really surprised me. Very smooth. The pistol came with the smaller wooden grips and with the larger black grips which allow my paws to fit. I have found out that a speed loader is difficult to use with the larger grips so I use strip loaders. Not as fast but take up a lot less room in a pocket and doesn't rattle around while in the pocket.
What about the Ruger SP101? It is heavy, but is also the most controllable 357 magnum small frame out there. With 38 specials, it is just fun to shoot.
Anyone else notice the smooth trigger operation and speed of the Ruger GP100 Match Champion? That is one smooth revolver, smooth operator, or both. Amazing trigger control! Please share your training tip for repeating the DA trigger so smoothly and so quickly. BTW I’m new to your channel and love the content as I am new to revolvers.
I use an LCR 327 federal. I wish they had the exposed hammer when I purchased it. I also wish it had the adjustable sights. Having said that, it hits close to point of aim with 32 H&R magnums and 327’s our to 15 yards. The recoil isn’t bad, even with moderate 327’s. I like the short barrel because it does fit in jeans pockets.
I carry a K6s DA/SA in 3" that I obtained way before WSHTF. Super reliable and after 500 plus practice round in .38 special and .357 magnum is my go to revolver.
I'm 5"10"" tall, a small to medium sized guy (175 lbs). I can easily carry my N-frame S&W 625 45 ACP 4" barrel revolver concealed, provided I use the right holster and dress around the gun. My favorite CCP guns are a 4" S&W 66 and Taurus 617 (7-shot 2" barrel), the S&W 66 on the left hip, and the Taurus 617 on the right hip as primary. I occasionally carry a Glock 19 (left hip) as back up to the Taurus 617(right hip), mainly to keep myself familiar with carrying autos. The reason the Taurus 617 is right hip primary is because the 2" revolver is very fast to draw from concealment and land a first round hit center mass. In my bi-monthly practice sessions I shoot 100 rounds. 80 rounds are fired, as single shot "draw and fire, hit center mass". 20 rounds are fired in 10 cycle rounds of double-tap. I practice this way because "1st hit center mass" is critical to survival IMO. The reason for the 4" revolver as left hip back up, is for a long range shot if needed, say a scenario of a mall mass shooter with AR15, across the plaza from me. The S&W 66 4" barrel is superbly accurate fired single action from prone position out to 100+ yards for me, (as also is a Taurus 66 7-shot 6" barrel I've been testing IF I can get a holster to effectively CCP it!!). I'm not fond of carrying the Glock 19 as backup due to its very poor long range accuracy compared to the S&W 66/ Taurus 66. I'm about to retire the autos for CCP carry in all honesty, as the autos cannot give me what I want in a back up gun, namely superb long handgun range accuracy.
I do own a J-frame S&W model 60 .357 revolver. It also came with a 3" barrel and an adjustable rear sight. It isn't exactly a "snubbie" revolver since it's a little too heavy at 24 oz, but still concealable.
Great video...we’re a dying bread we are! The LCR is nice in 3in. but IMO if you want to carry a 3in. revolver the S&W 19 carry comp in .357 is the one to use! If I’m not carrying my M19 my M10 snubby is by my side!
"99 of people would be perfectly served with a 5-shot revolver." Yup. Unfortunately 67% of gun owning civilians fully buy in to tactical fantasies and misguided illusions of being a hero. And things like practicality having taken a back seat to an industry that is cranking in big bucks fueling "operator" envy. This crap has gotten ridiculous. And thank you for helping bust the myth that revolvers are really only appropriate as "beginner's guns." Whenever I hear some millennial gun culture 2.0 flat brim say this, all I think is - "keep talking and you'll tell me everything you don't know...." ;-)
Ha ha! I can just picture one of those 67% who dream of having medals pinned to their shirts, having a news anchor shut up and nod like a bobblehead when they speak making them world famous and being surrounded by beautiful blonds and stacks of cash.
Hammer 67 - maybe 95% of people would be perfectly served with a muzzle loading pistol. That’s why I carry an 1840 percussion muzzleloading dueling pistol with a JP Enterprises hammer spring kit, Geiselle Tac trigger, SpeedFleet ramrod, and Crimson Trace laser grip. If you can’t get it don’t with one shot, you just can’t shoot. Repeating pistols are for kids who don’t know what they are doing.
@medicalmarijuana4all My glock 43x and cz rami have never once jammed or stove piped and I clean them every 800 rounds at the range.. Thats a myth and as for OP I love having 15+1 because its a lot more fun at the range the chances of me using my gun in a defensive situation is almost none. also shooting is my hobby.
I own a Taurus .357 poly protector and a ruger LCR. I will say the LCR really does have an amazing trigger. But yeah, Taurus shoots just fine, just a little bit of a heavy trigger, and it’s a bit stacky.
Good info, thanks. More to the point, folks, even in the absence of live fire, the difference in the simple gun-handling skills we see here between most self-proclaimed internet revolver experts, and someone who actually knows how to run a wheelgun is striking. Caleb is an example of the latter. The difference at the range would be even more striking. This comes from many thousands of rounds downrange during focused practice sessions, and many hours of dry fire. The pressure of competition doesn't hurt either.
I really don’t understand the whole concept of safely reholstering your gun. Why are you doing that in the first place? I check my gun to make sure it’s good to go, put it in my holster and then hook the holster to my belt. When I need to remove or adjust my holster or gun I simply remove it all at once. Continuing to draw a re-holster a weapon is just asking for a negligent discharge.
Caleb, I really enjoyed your video on canceeled revolver carry. It are showed me some vary important points to cunsider. However I am on a vary limited buget and the one gun that I own and bought for persunal partection is a High Point .45 chambered in .45 automatic colt. Now I have shot this gun quite a bit and am able to, at this point, hit a five gallon bucket with multiple rounds filled with water at a distance of thirty feet or so consistantly. And, and what I like about the five gallon buckets I buy and use from Home Dapot is they are self sealing. Amazing !! When you hit them with bullets they do not leak.......not at all. Which makes them great for targets cuss you can keep on using them over and over and over again. The only thing I don't like is the hard recoil my gun is. So I am saving up my money and I am going to buy one of those three inch volvers that you said was good. Anyway, thanks Caleb. Signed, Doug.
Note: he is talking about the original .38 Special model, which holds 5 rounds. Ruger has also released the LCRx 3 inch in .22 Magnum which holds 6 rounds, and .357 Magnum which holds 5 rounds.
I have the 351c hammerless 7 shot 22mag. Put a ClipDraw on it and also the Ergo Delta grip which is awesome. I have a home range. Love shooting it. Plenty of power. The trigger is good and Yes you need all 13lbs to make that rimfire to fire. Best gun to carry. I also have the SW327PC 8 shot 357.
I carry a model 329PD 44 magnum and shoot 44 Special Honey Badger shells. A 6 -shot light weight scandium framed great gun. And I pocket holster carry a J frame +P 38 Special rated back-up revolver.
Caleb, Hello Sir...you mentioned want a revolver in .32 magnum that held 6 rounds. May a suggest to you Charter Arms Professional in .32 magnum, it holds 8 rounds. It has a 3" barrel. It is such a sweet gun. I'm 5'7 185 lbs and conceal it easily. I have speedloaders for it, but usually use stripper clips. It's a tough gun, and .32 magnum is almost right up there with .38 special per the USCAA testing of the rounds using FBI gel blocks & criteria. I am so happy with the gun. I'm a former LEO who carried S&W 357 #19 while on duty. I really missed a wheel gun so when I found this C.A. .32 magnum it really made me happy. I still love my Glocks 26, 19, & 10 mm's, & Kahr's, but this .32 H&R Magnum really brings back fond memories. Did I mention that the gun is beautiful & very manly. I subbed to your channel, may do the Patreon thing. Be careful out there....
My S&W 642 revolver is the only gun of mine that jammed up so bad I had to take it to a gunsmith. None of my other pistols have ever had an issue that couldn’t be resolved with a quick rack of the slide. That’s over the course of well over 5k rounds. That being said, I do occasionally throw my 642 in the loop as a pocket gun.
Revolver is the best utility gun available. Best carry piece overall. Two minor drawbacks, thickness of cylinder when concealing and limited ammo. Otherwise, what’s not to like?
I got a Taurus 85 bought it in 1989 carried it as a duty weapon back in those days the Sheriffs Office didn’t provide firearms you had to provide your own never had a problem with it also have a Taurus 1911 never any issues with it.
I've carried a Colt Agent (the aluminum framed Detective Special) for years bought both a Charter bulldog and sig p938 to replace it but still carry using 158g xtp non +p. like that you carry a sa/da most gun guys will tell you DAO or a bobbed hammer better because it reduces snag risk and final I think Ruger make a sp101 in 327 mag federal that can chamber other 32 calibers like the 32 h&R mag great video by the way
Idk exactly what problems you have had with taurus but they have definitely stepped up there game in recent years. I have the Judge and i havent had any issues and it is super fun to shoot
He's probably right about the 3" LCRx... I have the 1.875" version and it's awesome too - but it requires a lot of practice to get good with it. However, I also have a 4" .357 Taurus Tracker as well; it's great, but as he's said - enormous for a concealed carry (😅)!
You can still put your thumb over shaved off hammer while your putting it back Into holster I don't like exposed hammer it might snag if you have to draw with one hand while other arm is keeping someone at bay
Hi Caleb ... I am very pleased with the Hogue grip for the LCR for greater grip control of the revolver during shooting! Check it out 👍🏻 Ruger LCR/LCRx: Black Rubber Tamer Cushion Grip without Finger Grooves - Sku: 78030
I carried my Grandpas Smith & Wesson 686 4” in .357Mag for about a year just to see what it was like. I actually learned a lot about conceal carry just from that particular weapon. Not fun to conceal carry, but the lessons learned are valuable. I’ve gone back to my Glock 26. I do occasionally switch to my Glock 19 but since I traded my Gen 3 26 in for the Gen 5 I haven’t carried the 19. I know most of the changes weren’t massive but that little Gen 5 feels so good for some reason over my Gen 3. How do you feel about the Gen 5’s Caleb?
I wouldn't shoot .357 out of anything smaller than a GP100. With my old shoulders, I need the mass to soak up the recoil. I handled a 22 lcrX the other day. The trigger for a 22 was really nice. I'm thinking about that one.
Ok I own and shoot, among others, a Taurus model 605 Protector Poly and it’s a great shooter. I have found it to be accurate, extremely easy to conceal and has never misfired. Yes, SOME manufacturers produce trash but to say all guns from Taurus are trash is simply disingenuous and frankly WRONG!
Ruger must have heard you... Just picked up my Ruger LCR 327 this week. Not planning to shoot 327 ammo in it, probably just 32 short/ACP/long/H&R Magnum. Haven't shot it yet - probably going out to the desert for a day in another week to give it a try. Might try getting CCW with it in 8 months if I can get in enough training time to feel comfortable with it before then, but I'm in California, so it's hard to say if that will go through. I did hear new Riverside sheriff is pro-CCW, so it might. I'm new to guns - just a couple years into them at this point, so this seemed like a good mid point between my 22 grandpa rifle and the 9mm bought a year ago.
I've written the CEO at Ruger on their "Tell the CEO" option suggesting a six shot, 3" LCRx .38 for all the dinosaurs still roaming the earth that would likely carry it because they can't CC the weight of model 10's, 13's, 19's, 15's and the like as much as they'd really prefer to. Make options with and without adjustable sights. I like your FIB mug.
my older Js have very nice triggers. my 351pd has the crappy trigger you have. but even with that you can still have misfires, so the heavy pull really is not needed. i still have misfires when I by bulk ammo, but when you by , like CCI or other quality you dont have that problem. the older Js in rim fire had nice trigger pulls and again, quality ammo always went off . but cheap bulk ammo ....well you know.
.22 magnum is marginal as a self-defense caliber. Ought to look at the Colt Cobra 2" which can accept up to 38 spcl. +p. If you need more power, look at the Colt King Cobra.
I have a Charter Arms 357 mag pug and this guy is full of Sh*t! It is a great little gun that I can conceal easily and the thump out of that 357 is REAL. so is the recoil that's why I carry 38 special in the gun and a speed loader with 357 magnum shells! Just in case! The only downfall is that it starts losing accuracy at about 50 yards for me. but I never could imagine engaging someone at over 50 yards with a carry gun because I don't look for trouble but i'm prepared for it when it comes knocking on my door! For Open carry and (Hunting) . legal in Mi. I carry my S&W model 29 and a 44 magnum Marlin Lever action rifle! with those I can take out any threat in North America, Human or Animal, at up to 150 yards!
The Sp101 deserved a mention
I’ll totally disagree with you about Taurus revolvers. Or at least the Model 85, which I’ve had for a couple years. Shoots well, more accurately than I can shoot it, and has been extremely reliable.

I love the Model 60!
Great video...we’re a dying bread we are!
The LCR is nice in 3in. but IMO if you want to carry a 3in. revolver the S&W 19 carry comp in .357 is the one to use!
If I’m not carrying my M19 my M10 snubby is by my side!

"99 of people would be perfectly served with a 5-shot revolver."
Yup.
Yes beginners can start on revolvers, but the small snubnose revolver is a experts weapon.
@@dsbiddle I know your response is tongue-in-cheek, but I think my point still stands.
Good video, will help in deciding which revolver to buy for conceal carry! One question. What kind of watch are you wearing ?
Who's duck is that in your hand?
I LOVE my very smooth, and reliable 7shot, model66, 4" Taurus .357. But go ahead and pay double for a name.
I own a Taurus .357 poly protector and a ruger LCR. I will say the LCR really does have an amazing trigger. But yeah, Taurus shoots just fine, just a little bit of a heavy trigger, and it’s a bit stacky.
Thats what im saying...taurus revolvers are awesome...the guy just wants to spend more money on the name...
I love the “Dear Ruger...” letter!
Love my Ruger GP100 with 5 inch barrel in 357 magnum.
That's my EDC with 2 speed loaders and 2 quick strips.
Out.
what holster do you use? been disappointed with the holster options for my 5"
Caleb, I really enjoyed your video on canceeled revolver carry.
Spittin facts ! Subbed
Kimber k6s is the best carry revolver for me.
Note: he is talking about the original .38 Special model, which holds 5 rounds. Ruger has also released the LCRx 3 inch in .22 Magnum which holds 6 rounds, and .357 Magnum which holds 5 rounds.
Other manufacturers also have 8 round 22 mag options. Starts to be quite tempting at that point.
Good video what holster was that for the 3 inch LCRX
the sweet spot would be the smith and wesson 686 plus 3inch 7shot or the new model 19 carry comp
I picked up the 19 carry comp and I love it lol
i think the sweet spot for a revolver to conceal would be a 4" barrel. just add the extra inch because of the increased recoil on most revolvers
I wouldent day plenty of power or that it'd the brd tgun to ccw.
I carry a model 329PD 44 magnum and shoot 44 Special Honey Badger shells. A 6 -shot light weight scandium framed great gun. And I pocket holster carry a J frame +P 38 Special rated back-up revolver.
Hey, a revolver lover AND a fellow Brown Coat! Subcribed!
Thanks for your input! I have been meaning to really test some Charter Guns and see how they hold up
My S&W 642 revolver is the only gun of mine that jammed up so bad I had to take it to a gunsmith. None of my other pistols have ever had an issue that couldn’t be resolved with a quick rack of the slide. That’s over the course of well over 5k rounds.
That being said, I do occasionally throw my 642 in the loop as a pocket gun.
I’ll stick with my Detective Special.
Hard to find 😢
@@Sweet_T4uRIA M206 may not be as elegant but they seem like a viable substitute at 1/3 the price.
Congrats. They listen to you. Just picked up a Ruger LCR 327 6 shooter.
“A man walks down the street in that hat, people know he's not afraid of anything.”
That 3” lcr is huge.
It’s just the LCRx with a 3” barrel, it’s actually really small. I have no trouble carrying it, though I have since gone with the DAO LCR in 327
J frame and a taurus 85 here at home i chose the taurus over the j just sayin
605 here
I just bought a stainless Ruger SP101 in .38Spl. How does it compare with the newer LCP, especially the trigger?
SP101 is a great pistol. Hands down
Revolver is the best utility gun available.
Yeah, this guy is clueless. Basically what he's saying is if you don't own a Ruger or S&W you ain't shit.
Whatever facts this guy's using, exist only in his mind.
My Taurus revolver never gave me problems!! It’s actually my favorite carry gun
Love my Taurus 65
I have a taurus 85 and im perfectly happy with it stock. No fancy gee-gaws and doo-dads to add weight. Not that its a bad thing.
Why would you leave the Ruger SP101 out of your list. It is every bit as good IF NOT BETTER than a J frame.
Never go wrong with a Ruger revolver. The Smith lightweights are kinda cheap looking.
A quality gun for sure and available in 6 shot 32.
Got any holster recommendations?
You can still put your thumb over shaved off hammer while your putting it back Into holster I don't like exposed hammer it might snag if you have to draw with one hand while other arm is keeping someone at bay
Ruger makes the SP01 in 327 Federal, 6 shot.
What do you think is the best pocket carry pistol?
can you put the link what type of gun it is ?
Good info
My EDC is a 3" .44 special 5 shooter...
Hi Caleb ... I am very pleased with the Hogue grip for the LCR for greater grip control of the revolver during shooting! Check it out 👍🏻
Ruger LCR/LCRx: Black Rubber Tamer Cushion Grip without Finger Grooves - Sku: 78030
I just grabbed a Colt King Cobra 2" carry model as my Glock 43X backup gun. Its such a beautiful pistol that I almost dont want to shoot it lol
They’re fine
A bean flip to the eye is my choice!
Yes, SOME manufacturers produce trash but to say all guns from Taurus are trash is simply disingenuous and frankly WRONG!
absolutely I carry ether a snub 38 or a g3c and have absolutely no issues with ether one. different situations call for different carry methods
I hate you lol i was waiting for you to make a video like this since day one soo much awesome in this video.
What are your thoughts about cutting a defensive revolver for moon clips?
I am not a fan, I’ve had too many problems with moonclip guns over the years.
Chiappa makes an awesome small frame revolver, but pricey.
What's your opinion on backup guns? Do you think a 2" LCR or LCRx .38+P would make a good backup gun?
Definitely! I think the hammerless would be my choice for an ankle gun.
It would make a great primary too.
So no cap-and-ball revolvers?
And yes, I know that there are some double-action models in that type.
For some people that may be fine. It's a PIA to maintain. I think for most of us we want a cartridge gun.
dont be dumb lol
I want a 3” LCRx in .327 bad.
Try the s&w trr8
my older Js have very nice triggers. my 351pd has the crappy trigger you have. but even with that you can still have misfires, so the heavy pull really is not needed. i still have misfires when I by bulk ammo, but when you by , like CCI or other quality you dont have that problem. the older Js in rim fire had nice trigger pulls and again, quality ammo always went off . but cheap bulk ammo ....well you know.
.22 magnum is marginal as a self-defense caliber. Ought to look at the Colt Cobra 2" which can accept up to 38 spcl. +p. If you need more power, look at the Colt King Cobra.
I wish I could carry a GP-100 Match Champion. Carrying a 4 inch medium/full frame 357 is challenging. Especially in Texas in the summer!
thats a crazy gun to carry
Whats the name of that locker your using
Very informative. Thank you. O have been contemplating getting a carry revolver but was stuck between 38 and 357. I think you just solved my dilemma
Good video.
