Ammonia-based solvents are quite dangerous when used in the manner you describe in this video. Check it out, people. Fireplace glass has a structure and chemistry rather different from safety, window or oven glass.

David, thanks so much for this information. Will definitely look into it.

@@FieldGuidetoDIY you got this. Ammonia reacts chemically with this kind of glass, rendering it susceptible to a process called ‘etching’ in which the surface is permanently marred. In some cases, the glass can fail. Spectacularly.
Easy-Off and Windex both contain it. Acetic acid (vinegar) is cheap like borscht and takes soot off no problemmo.

You may be onto something, nothing has cut it so far!

That fire place is not burning correctly, that’s why you have so much soot built up on the glass and interior of the combustion chamber. Log patterns are very specific and should be installed per the manufacturers specifications.
Really seems like you’re starving it of oxygen. Check your vent and intake to the furnace. Also, clean the main burner.

and NOOOOO!!!!! Oven cleaner, Windex and any ammonia based cleaner should NOT be used to clean fireplace glass. I learnt this one the hard way.
