Given that "consoles" are just dummied down PC's anyway, if Microsoft was smart (debatable after the total disaster that Windows 11 has been so far), they'd just make their XBOX systems into low-end PC's with some half decent graphics hardware. They're not going to be able to continue to "make money" selling crappy, instantly obsolete hardware, the real money is going to be in where they've been headed as they and SONY buy up gaming studios - selling the game software that people want to play. Look at the mainframe computer industry which went through this transition in the late 80's and early 90's. IBM doesn't make money selling hardware these days, they make much more money just selling software and consulting technologies and services. That's where the economic growth is, not in hardware anymore!
Microsoft did not purchase Activision blizzard because they lost the console generation that would be a stupid business move. They purchased it because Microsoft will need to swing it big money wallet around and acquire studio after studio after studio.
There is part of me that feels like it would be MS more than Sony and Nintendo. When I think of XBox, it's more US-centric than the other two whereas Sony and Nintendo have a more international feel in the game libraries -- granted this has changed over time, but still doesn't have the world appeal like the other two Also, to some degree, XBX-GP has Xbox Anywhere so people that have PC's can enjoy gaming without an Xbox. Only way that I could see having the PC/Xbox combination is people that don't want to spend upwards of 1000-3000+ for a system that can consistently do 2160p gaming but still have a PC to do "other things" outside of gaming with their Windows based systems. Nintendo's hardware sucks with their philosophy of "Lateral Thinking with Withered Technology", but so far, it has worked. Get older generation technology, sell it at a lower price and say something like "We don't tailor our games to the hardware, we tailor the hardware to our games..." and it's this kind of quoting that makes people think that the quality of their products is far higher than the competition. Even Reggie Fils-Amie once touted that the N64 was one of the most powerful consoles of it's era, but it didn't do well -- however, part of that was because they arrogantly believed that going to optical media was not the way to go -- and in that era...it was. It makes me wonder what Final Fantasy VII could have looked like if it was on Nintendo N64 and an expansion memory pak. Also Nintendo hedges confidently on locking down their games to themselves only. "If you want our games, you have to come to us and be all in." They barely (if ever) cross-license. The exception is mobile devices, but it's never really anything from their major IPs...and if they are, it's just a spin off (Mario, Fire Emblem as examples). Mobile devices are far more powerful than anything they churn out, but who wants to pay four figures for a device that may only last with 2-4 years of major updates. I don't care for Nintendo with their business practices all the way back into the NES era all the way today with them suing everyone left and right if you even lightly sniff anything that has to do with them. So....Sony will always have some sort of market share because Playstation. Nintendo will always have market share because of their walled garden and sticking to it no matter how hard it gets and knowing people have no choice if they love some of the titles/IP.
the switch only sold so much hardware because it was cheap and accessible, the PS5 launch was bottlenecked by scalpers and im willing to bet there are people still sitting on storage units full of PS5s they couldn't sell for the 300% markup they were aiming for. the Nintendo switch is not a good console, I have one and outside of Animal Crossing and Zelda I dont use it cause it sucks. the switch 2 might sell better than PS6 or Xbox generation alpha project zero 4 (whatever convoluted name they give it) but thats because the switch 2 like the switch is going to be built on hardware from two years ago and is going to be cheap and easy to mass produce. Sony will win because they have the games that people want to play. and for the record I do not own a PS5.
Well sony most likely won't succeed no one is buying their games hardly and I don't see people paying more then 500 for a console when they can just build a pc which plays all titles from each platform legally or not and nintendo will only succeed due to their ips and being primarily a handheld device and sony doesn't support their handhelds long and they sure as hell are not gonna release something as cheap as a series s
