  • How did you sleep last night? Perhaps you slept strangely. Sleepwalking, sleep paralysis, night terrors and hypnopompic hallucinations are among sleep disorders known as ‘parasomnias’, and they’re far more common than we think. This talk Alice explores the presentation of parasomnias in history and culture, and will emphasise how important it is to talk about them. Dr Alice Vernon is Lecturer in Creative Writing at Aberystwyth University, where she teaches students the fundamentals of storytelling. Her research specialises in the history of medicine and Victorian parapsychology, and her debut non-fiction book, Night Terrors, was published by Icon Books in October 2022. She received her PhD from Aberystwyth University in 2018.
Alice's research primarily involves the history of medicine, with a focus on Renaissance anatomy and Victorian parapsychology. She is particularly interested in the cultural and scientific depictions of sleep disorders such as sleep paralysis, lucid dreams, and hypnopompic hallucinations.

As someone who suffered some of the most extreme cases of night terrors during a kid, this was fascinating.

Cheese actually contains a naturally occuring opiod called casein. Opiods/opiates can cause extremely vivid dreams, hypnogognic imagery, and sleep paralysis. I know from first hand experience. Cheese might be capable of inducing those things too though, idk.

I have had sleep paralysis and I think it was related to acid reflux. I got helicobacter and it went on for a very long time. When the acid came up it woke me up in the middle of a sleep and I was completely paralysed. I was terrified. When my acid cleared up so did the sleep paralysis . It appears to happen when sleep is disrupted. I have had the worst experiences with someone on my back and doing terrible things to me. I had to move my toes to get out of the trance and pray that the thing would go away. It was honestly the worst time of my life. I don’t know if it was the stress of feeling terrible or waking mid sleep.

In 1979 I remembered to look at my hands in a dream. Everything fell away and I was lucid.
As far as I can tell, I exclusively lucid dream since then. I don’t believe that I can have a nightmare. I don’t remember any since then.

Second That. I have NO nightmares. But I can have frightening demonic encounters. At first, they scared me. But after a few incidents, I learned a) I can do an "instant recall" into my body, when they "stab" or try to kill me, which prevents them from harming me and b) most of the lesser demons are very weak. They are rude, mocking, and aggressive, but when it comes to a fight, they lose big time. When you repeatedly take them down, you get confidence. You can stand your ground against 15 of them, but I don't like massacres, so I usually withdraw. There are higher-level entities you don't want to mess with. But there is a good chance you can escape them. I think nightmares are induced by demons to feed off our energy. When you develop a certain degree of skill, you can sense them when they come near you, go lucid, and then cope with these parasites on their plane of existence. So they don't get to the point where they can start feeding on you, and your nightmare problems are gone.

Too many terrifyingly movies today influence dreams, thought about it before she also mentioned it.
However as a child I used to often dream about fireballs falling from the sky, went on from about 5 to 13.
Eating well before bed, especially a steak helps me rest well. Best time for the body to replenish itself with natural complete whole food.

Sometimes healthy people (I mean, without a disease or illness that can affect sleep) we say: I can't sleep well
But our sleep routine is awful or even people don't know anything about it.
When we try to follow a sleep routine, everything seems to improve❤

I don't know if anyone has sleep paralysis before nightmares like me. My sleep paralysis is a little different from other people. At least in Turkey, other people cannot only move and speak during sleep paralysis. I hear, see and feel sounds in addition to these. I give my imagination that mine is a little different :,) the last time I had it 10 minutes ago. this time it was extremely simple. it went away after I could move my foot. for a moment I thought I would experience action again, I was scared.
I have heard that this situation is generally more common in people who stay in dormitories as children or adolescents, and when I asked the people who experienced it, I saw that the majority is like that.
The next time it happened again in the same months and I heard a voice (there was a girl who laughed loudly in high school, I heard the voices of other people in the class, her voice being more dominant. they were not saying anything specific). my sleep paralysis adventure continued to come in a different and more effective way over time and after a while it started to decrease. it must have come probably 30 times until this time. it took a terrible form when hallucinations were added later.
My religious culture teacher said 'you may be seeing this nightmare with the effect of a vitamin that is missing in your body'.

I used to have this sleep paralysis so frequently that it made me dread sleeping. It was a terrible experience.
As a Christian, it was even more challenging cause talking about was a sign of a lack of spiritual maturity or at least that's how I felt.
With God's help. How? His word. I let go of the fear of the dreams. So at some point, when I have them, I don't struggle to try to wake up, I just consciously wait it out. It not comfortable cause mine comes sometimes with this strange feeling of me being electrocuted.
Long story short, four steps I would suggest you take if you struggling with this.
      1. Get close to God. Understand that Jesus died for you so you can have life abundantly and peace. He has all authority so nothing can harm you.
      2. Sleep paralysis does not have to be more than a dream. No matter how strange it is or feel. It's just an harmless dream. You better believe that.
      3. If you have it, once you awake let that be the end of it. Don't let it ruin your day or emotions.
      4. Sleep early if you can. A good bedtime will do you a lot of good. Bedtimes are not just for kids. We adults probably need it more.
For me, sleep paralysis it's an insignificant phenomenon that I don't give as much importance to as I used to.
I hope this helps you sleep better.

I have suffered the terror paralysis a couple times. But my worst dreams were like a short repetitive loop played over and over.
A dream, could take the form of me...
chasing a ghost up and down the floors of our house, over and over. I would attempt to yell at the ghost in my sleep but only slurred speech. Until my wife would wake up to me yelling and swearing at the ghost.
or being stuck in deep water(another paralysis subject) outside my town's harbor surrounded by floating nuclear missiles only I could disarm. But I could barely move my hands.
The worst dreams for me though are the mundane, repeating an action over and over. Something simple like moving the same chess game piece on a game board, in an identical manner, over and over the entire night, until it drove me insane.
I would be wrecked and exhausted waking up. And I would lose my ability to sleep for a day or two. Once went three days working 12 hour shifts with no sleep. Day three I didn't even remember driving to work.
Waking dreams, mundane or horrific, are what nightmares are made of.

Call Jesus! He will come and rescue you! The demons doesn’t have any power over you when you accept Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior.
Luke 10:19-20 (NIV) “I have given you authority to trample on snakes and scorpions and to overcome all the power of the enemy; nothing will harm you. However, do not rejoice that the spirits submit to you, but rejoice that your names are written in heaven.”
