I love that you use the definition of 'niksen' as an example. To us (dutch people) it is such a normal thing. When someone asks us what we'll be doing this evening, it's the most normal and natural thing to just say: "Oh I'm just going to have a nice evening of doing nothing (lekker niksen)." And the response will almost always be positive.
Such a simple and beautiful concept. We need a phrase / concept / word like this in English so our culture understands what it means to slow down 😊 thank you for watching
Yeah maybe, but that can be hard to do for many people. Many things have doubled or quadrupled in price the last couple of years. That's basically the same as losing half to three quarters of your savings. I guess saving money is still a good idea, but am not so sure. If it's going to continue to be devalued like this then maybe it's better to just spend most of what comes in on a more short term basis? Hmm...
Loved hearing you use the word 'niksen' :). Great pronunciation! Too bad here in Belgium, 'niksen' is often used a bit on the negative side, like : 'Shouldn't you be doing anything productive rather than sitting here doing nothing (niksen). I think we would all benefit from a slower world.
4:59 *Dolce Far Niente* 6:08 *Niksen* Being 🇳🇱 Dutch 🇳🇱 , I never actually thought about the word "niksen". But you're right, it indeed means "to do nothing". My first time to know you Sophie. You are young, pretty and smart when thinking differently with the majority. I like your channel and all of the video images and your presentation.
Thank you for opening up this topic. Most people are eaten by the earthly bound behavior of always in a rush, overuse of gadget, and all the destructions made us separated from the true meaning of our existence. We need to stop or paused for a while and just listen to your inner self dictating us "I am here, let's talk, I need a break," is a reward and a chance for you to relax, paused, and enjoy the natural beauty of nature. In silence we are entering into a new dimension of our lives, be it in a gradual progress as we enjoy the rest of our lives. Thanks for sharing this evocative video.
Thank you for this reminder to slow down. Last week I started eating SLOWLY at the recommendation of a nutritionist. It has changed how I feel after I eat, even without changing my diet at all. I look forward to expanding this slowness into other daily habits.
I was born in The Netherlands. When I was young and friends would ask "what are you doing?", I would answer "Niks!". Niksen is the Dutch explanation of doing nothing. Since being in the UK, I have forgotten doing nothing. And I have picked it up again. Now I can't see people rushing around. Being busy for being busy. It looks good to impress other with the answer I am Busy. Try to change this to Nothing. It is the best way of living. Your mind needs it. It makes your life very enjoyable.

Thank you for introducing me to the term niksen. There's such a big impact on my wellbeing during the periods it's absent from my life and I've never known how to explain it to anyone
I thought it was such a cool word and concept :) I'm glad I could share it with you. I think it's cool that we can look to other cultures and language to find the exact word to express how we feel. Thank you for your lovely comment.
Thank you for this video. I've had (it used to be worse though!) a sense of guilt when doing nothing. With your video and the understanding of my body and mind, I really feel that this is one of most important things for me now: living slowly. And I deeply believe it would be beneficial to everyone. Thank you for showing this to all the people ou there. ❤
i released an album last month and the next day told myself, "how soon can I get the next one out!?" However, I've found myself so burnt out with this mentality and knew I needed to slow down. Loved the vibe of this message. I really savored this reminder

My doing nothing was riding a motorcycle up Mt Haleakala . Such a peaceful ride. It was not a race. It was to slow down and take in the beauty. The journey and the destination were one. In a sense, I'm still there. It is still with me.
I just want to Thank God for creating you and your parents for raising you and your husband for being your best friend... with so much Love in you , you are so selfless and you sharing what’s working for you so that we can better our lives, whenever you say “Slow living is for everyone “ I believe you because I practice that and it works for me. I believe that happiness comes from within not from materialistic things and other humans. I turned 29 in June and I changed my life for me, it’s all about me and for me. I am always happy and I’m not faking it , I am happy with what I have and grateful for each day to be successful. I am healthy and that’s my wealth. Thank you so much for your kind contribution to this beautiful world.💚
Great video. I like the metaphor of a busy life is always running to the finish line. Most of us find ourselves running to a finish line in a race that we didn't even know we signed up for. We wake up one day and find ourselves with a jam-packed schedule that we never would have designed for ourselves purposefully. Your video reminds me of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), much of which is practicing mindfulness. Thank you.

Thanks for "Dolce Far Niente". Its so ccol. We don't have this concept in Asia. Life here is all about deadlines, pressure, KPA, etc...... I'm begining to see the sweetness side of life. Luv the video.
‘Sati’ or mindfulness, living in the now…actually originate from Asia. Buddhism, Taoism embraces the concept of relaxation, enjoying the moment…etc. In my native country Vietnam, people do live like the Italians. But I imagine it can be quite competitive in countries like Singapore.

Sometimes people see doing nothing as being lazy and insult you because of it but the truth is doing nothing is more important and interesting than most understand you can really connect to a place by just sitting Idle the part of our brains that want us to do something is just the primitive part of our brain the animal part of our brain so to say but we humans have the ability to go beyond that part of our brain due to our more complex human part of the brain
I agree with you Jeffrey. I find myself feeling more inspired and creative when I take the time to pause and zoom out of my life for the moment. It seems like a waste of time, but it has been a way for me to grow and understand the world.

I’m always so confused...who are these few people that have “disliked” this video! 😂 We need more videos like this! Beautiful! THANK YOU!
Thank you so much for your kind words Marie :) I am just thankful that they at least watched it haha! Happy holidays to you
Sometimes people see doing nothing as being lazy and insult you because of it but the truth is doing nothing is more important and interesting than most understand you can really connect to a place by just sitting Idle the part of our brains that want us to do something is just the primitive part of our brain the animal part of our brain so to say but we humans have the ability to go beyond that part of our brain due to our more complex human part of the brain
I agree with you Jeffrey. I find myself feeling more inspired and creative when I take the time to pause and zoom out of my life for the moment. It seems like a waste of time, but it has been a way for me to grow and understand the world.
Yeah, I guess really an acceptance slow down life...😀
😁❤
