Europe's energy supply under attack | DW Business Special

  • Russia is squeezing the EU’s gas supplies and two key pipelines appear to have been sabotaged. In this DW Business Special we discuss the security of Europe’s energy supply.
OPEC+, which includes Russia, this week announced it was slashing oil output: a move that is likely to increase fuel prices in Europe. Has the EU left itself vulnerable to the decisions of unfriendly nations? Does Europe’s future energy security depend on EU member states sharing their supplies?
We answer these questions and more with the help of Olga Khakova, deputy director of European Energy Security at the Atlantic Council's Global Energy Center.

@Philip Leech “Europe walked right into this with their eyes wide open”
It’s an economic war against Russia, and the very “ammunition” to use is the actual existing trade itself.
If it wasn’t for these trade, what would you sanction Russia with?
Do you think sanctions on Putin’s daughters (who are safe in Russia) was anywhere effective??
We know EU sanctions on Russia are hitting the target. Putin’s speeches in June and July on their entirety was slamming EU mostly on sanctions but also supporting Ukraine, by contrast he only criticized USA 2 times, for standing by Ukraine and USA quantitative easing (go figure).

Europe destroyed a lot of the US manufacturing sector, it bragged that it was going to replace the USA as the worlds dominant power, it said the Euro would replace the USD as the world standard, it used the EU to enforce its ideas, it used NATO for its defence and wouldn’t pay its contribution, when Trump said it was not paying enough the EU said it would form its own army.
Now the EU is seen to be the paper castle that it really is. It’s manufacturing sector is on its knees, and will probably wither and die. The Euro has collapsed. The EU is in disarray and member nations are going seperate ways in energy security. EU standards like USB-C are being ignored, there is a war on its doorstep and unlike the US it still isn’t offering Ukraine much help.

Russia was far more likely to have done this for the following reasons. First, they want to drive a wedge between US and Europe. Second, the money argument doesn’t work as the US is already sending all the supply possible to Europe and doesn’t have capacity to send more. Third, an extension of 2 is the US already was getting what they want, the pipelines were already not flowing and there was about a zero percent chance of that changing any time in the near future. Fourth, one of the pipelines was not destroyed. The US would have utterly destroyed all of them and left none able to supply. Fifth, Russia immediately says they can supply gas through the undamaged line. Sixth, the line that happens to not be damaged is the line that Russia still wants to get certified. Seventh, Russia wants higher prices for the gas that they are still supplying as the price has been dropping and they are not doing the volume they once were. By a long shot they are supplying far less, hence the combination of the 2 is a huge hit to them.

Why are they not pushing tidal energy? There has to be a fortune of electric just waiting to be captured on the shores of Europe. Some times I wonder about beauracrats. Perhaps it's because they are milking the money markets on wind and solar and don't have enough tidal turbine shares just yet. 🤔

Tidal energy schemes suffer severe damage from corrosion and fatigue damage and are often destroyed by storms. It is extremely expensive.

Just like with all the other renewables it will cost more to build and maintain than the energy you can get out of it. Renewables only worked if you have cheap natural gas. There is no alternative when it comes to the energy density.

Change DS/DT>0 to DS/DT>infinite>0. That way Europe will be energy dependent. si you have PhD figure that out.

All news channels bring on experts that I don't know from a bar of soap. Then I am forced to listen to terrible audio from the guest who answers your questions in some way.
Where is the value proposition of a news channel when a report is only hard work to listen and comprehend.
I expect you to do the hard lifting. Pick and interview experts. Distil the answer and present it in a comprehensible way.
Bringing some random in on a zoom call is hardly watchable TV.
