I was really impressed the way the movie was put together from a couple of episodes of the tv show The scene on the ocean with when they were going to Cuba blew me away
my favorite film of all time.. so underrated ! the flair the feeling the atmosphere is unique I have never had this feeling again watching movies. I think its one of the misunderstood masterpieces in film history.
Since kid i love the soundtrack of this movie thanks to my dad who watched the movie and used to listen to its soundtrack. I used to imagine the movie would end with this song without wathcing it because it makes me think about life and its so relaxing. Now, I am 20 years old and finally watched the movie and couldn't be more satisfied with the end of this movie...Amazing.
I agree with all the sentiment from other comments than this is an unappreciated masterpiece. It easily sits within my personal top 10 films. Mann is often criticised for favoring style over substance, but surely he can be forgiven when the style is this good. No shot in this film is throw-away and every frame exhibits pure artistic beauty. Mann is a genius at crystalising the urban landscape and through his hyper real, expressionist lens he makes Miami the most beguiling and arresting it's ever been on celluloid. At its heart the plot is a fairly simple one; a drugs bust. However there are a multitude of moving parts which keeps the film breezing along and which dovetail - with the help of the tightest of editing - into a highly satisfying whole. The film has been accused of being far removed from its source inspiration, but this could not be further from the truth. Much of the film's story line, and even entire sections of dialogue, can be lifted straight from season 1 episode 15 'smuggler's blues'. Gina's ultimatum to Trudy's captor in the film is an homage to Crockett's famous lines to a kidnapper in season 1 episode 9 'Glades'. Many have also said that the relationship between the leads in the film was misjudged and lost the rapport of what made the tv series so great, when in fact Jamie Foxx and Colin Farrell capture the absolute quintessence of Crockett and Tubbs. Yes they don't talk much, smile much, or even look at each other much, but they are a true partnership. They are like a well oiled machine with each knowing the other is the best at what they do, each knowing how the other works and each willing back the other up without hesitation. Tubbs is '100 per cent with Sonny' and Sonny is likewise. Go back an watch perhaps the most famous scene from the tv show - the drive along an open stretch of highway to 'In the air tonight'. Crockett and Tubbs barely speak at all, but perfectly convey the unequivocal trust they have. Anyone who says the film is unlike the show is either not a true fan or perhaps not familiar with the dark, gritty realism of the earlier seasons. Back to the film's ending and we see a brilliantly executed conclusion that manages to illuminate Sonny as the icon we know him to be. Here is a woman and the possibility of a type of happy, care free existence. The male with a strong code is a Mann protagonist mainstay, but when these men stray from their system, their code, they become lost. See Neil McCauley in Heat, Frank in Thief, Vincent in Collateral. Crockett manages to remain on the right path however. He knows his relationship with Isabella is an illusion, built on a fabrication of identity. In the final moments it is made clear that the true relationship of the film is Tubbs and Trudy's. Crockett knows this and he also knows who he is. He is willing to accept that his code may mean that he is alone. And so in a moment of gloriously understated heroism enveloped by those final frames of him disappearing into a mundane nightscape; he goes back to his partners. Back to the job..
Yeah this is my favorite film man and I don’t even try to explain it to people anymore. I just say watch the director’s version. I can’t even explain how many relationships have ended and we both just knew time ran out. Shit my life is littered with them. Maybe that’s why this shit hit me fairly deep. Bomb ass movie here
This song is so epic. This scene, the Lance Armstrong "live strong" commercial, the trailer for the Brave One. Get's me stoked every time! I remember playing Spec Ops on Xbox 360 and heard Glasgow Mega-Snake and I freaked out haha
No doubt at all this is a masterpiece. But that it hasn't got the recognition it deserved has a sliver lining in that those such as us that know how good it is can enjoy it without it ever going mainstream ....
The original ending was to be filed in Paraguay, but infighting between members of the cast and the director forced the producers to scrap it. Specifically Michael Mann & Jaime Foxx were not getting along because a number of issues with production. The original scripts ending had Isabella killed by the drug lord, who then is given up by Jose Yero as part of a deal between him and Crockett to let him go, which would become a point of contention with Tubbs. But all that was scrapped for a more mundane ending written on the fly. If you look closely, the final scene where Crockett is walking into the hospital is actually the same scene where he negotiated the final drug with Jose Yero. He's wearing the same clothes, has the cell phone in his hand. Michael Mann just created a hog posh of edited movie scenes with the music from Mogwai; cause he didn't have the time to write a new ending and bring in the actors for additional filming.
Where is Miami Vice 2? Foxx+Farrell said they'd like to make it...and the 1st film made a profit. Mann said that if he could get a great story line he would make a sequel. I gotta find out how to write to him-
Would be hard to find a studio to budget a sequel for a film that barely made a profit, let alone one with a director like Mann who will blow pass budgets. Farrell, Foxx, and Mann, would do it in a heartbeat even 12 years after it was made, but the money will never be there.
Yeah studios wouldn't budge on providing a budget for another one nor do I think Michael Mann would be up for a sequel to one of his films, have we ever seen a sequel to any of his other films? Even if they bomb at the box office I think they are underrated masterpieces. I wish he'd make more films.
+mobbaddict I'm glad they changed it, this ending is perfect, it was the perfect ending to sonny and isabellas relationship with some quality lines and the music gives it that hard edge which the original series had.
A great track in itself, for the ending of a wildy disappointing movie. You're better off re-watching "Smuggler's Blues", on which the script is heavily based!

@@g.j.koster1986 Like Heat and Collateral this was a good movie. Not what I expected . I thought beaches and playboys and fast cars like the TV series but this was good film. Make in 2006 it could be released in 2026 and still look and feel right
Love the fact that even though Sonny has lost the woman he loves, he still gets to the hospital to check on his partner. Perfect music too.
That shot of Tubbs and Trudy holding hands is so damn touching man, this movie is underrated as hell.
An underrated masterpiece. The score is perfect. It rings with the sad repetition for the lives we desire but can never obtain.
Beautiful.
Mann is the master at movie endings.
One of the best ending to a movie ever. Simple and yet so beautiful
If this film had no relation to the tv show it would have been received a lot better. This film is is such a stunning visual experience

The ending sequence is a dream, never happened. Implication both women died, one in the hospital the other in the shootout.
There was a lot of things wrong with the production of the movie being related to the tv series wasn't one of the problems.
How so?

Watermelon The series was even better.
Totally agree, movie is amazing
For this reason I love mogwai
By far my favourite movie of all time. Not close. Criminally underrated.

This was a good film and the sound came damed close to emulating the 80's feel!

I love this movie! My favourite one. I like the way the MM do it. It´s unique. Master piece!
underrated movie

This song is so dope. Good film. Had the misfortune to carry such a heavyweight title. Didn't stand a chance from the beginning.
+Francis Rodrick It could have a chance if it were marketed properly. I didn't even know about it until I saw it on cable-
This is one of my favorite scenes in film. Thanks for adding this.
Work of art. loved it, still do.

I had heard Jamie Foxx left after some gunfire near the set and refused to shoot outside of the US after that
love this song!
Only Sunny can pull off a sad goodbye for a pretty woman
A very "Miami Vice" ending similar to the TV show
Masterpiece of filmmaking
Damn, wish I could sit like that with Gong Li on the beach...
Fuc--n movie rocked
It isnt the best MM movie but is better than the serie. Mogwai is awesome.

No way it is better than the original.
Collateral alley shooting scene, many scenes in heat was directly taken from mv 1-5.

the best love scene of all time , all movies , porn included !
is it me or does this version of auto rock sound different, anyone know which version this is?
I like the ending as it is but the original ending from the first screenplay might have been much more melancholic:
_INT._ _CYPRESS_ _HOUSE,_ _BEDROOM_ - _CROCKETT_ - _LATER_
_asleep._ _The_ _moonlight_ _is_ _silver_ _tinged_ _with_ _green._ _Someone_ _else_ _had_ _been_ _in_ _the_ _bed_ _with_ _him,_ _but_ _he_ _is_ _there_ _alone,_ _now._ _Crockett_ _wakes up._ _He_ _looks_ _around._ _She_ _was_ _there_ _and_ _now_ _she's_ _gone._
_He_ _gets_ _out_ _of_ _the_ _bed_ _and_ _looks_ _out_ _to_ _the_ _ocean_ _and_ _the_ _jetty._ _The_ _boat's_ _gone._ _She's_ _gone._ _Sonny_ _Crockett_ _looks_ _out_ _the_ _window._
_THE END_
