The mainline Chima sets are actually incredible. I love animals so the animal motifs really appealed to me. The show was okay, but the sets are seriously overhated. Chima just had the bad luck of trying to replace the popular theme of Ninjago. I honestly think Chima had more consistent set quality than Ninjago. The sheer amount of animals trumps the amount of ideas Ninjago tries to repeat.
But chima couldn't make a really good tv show like ninjago, ninjago felt more unique compared to chima and connected to kids a lot more. In my opinion Nexo Knights felt a little more unique than chima, but still not the same as ninjago
The sets are really good, but there was a massive disconnect between them and the show. If you only looked at the sets, you'd see figures like the rotting zombie ice hunters, or Winzar who has a bloody scar and go "wow, this theme is WILD, I wonder what the show's like". And then see that the show's way too lighthearted and comedic. Unlike Ninjago which keeps a consistent tone between the show and the sets. Chima's failure to understand why Ninjago's show worked was it's downfall
Maybe, but I really don't like how the minifigs came out. With the helmets their eyes look sunken in and like the characters are tired, and without them their faces look too flat with the amount of detail they try to fit on a single minifig head.
I assume Chima's face printing under the outer head molds was a redundancy. If you lost the face, you at least had something. And even with the outer head on, the different eye expressions are nice.

I’ve been rewatching the show, and it’s not half bad. I’d argue the show has the best animation from Lego and some of the best character designs I’ve ever seen. The sets on the other hand absolutely suck. So many of them feel incomplete or are horrible rip offs. I mean the speedorz are all the same and originally costed $20.00.
I don’t really understand why Chima was hated I thought the sets were really cool in design and the wolf monster truck was definitely a great set in my opinion I really like the gimmick of its jaw moving
Ninjago lovers systemically shit on it knowing chima was supposed to replace it, they couldn’t handle that so they boycotted it and only got ninjago stuff, they evaluated after the 3 seasons of chima and realized the fans loved ninjago more and they made way more off it than chima so they continued ninjago. Makes me genuinely upset knowing that we should’ve had more. They’re talking about continuing it in 2024 though!
Chima is in the top 5 best Lego themes for me. The show is great too, and the sets are decent enough. I wouldn’t say it’s as good as Ninjago, Dreamzzz, or Monkie Kid, but it’s kept me more invested than Nexo Knights, Hero Factory or Mixels.
I remember there was once a Chima contest in the Lego Club magazine to win the entire collection of Fire and Ice Chima sets. You were required to build a defense that would protect Mt Cavora from the Ice tribes. Then you were supposed to send in a picture of your build for a chance to win. I spent ages making this massive and elaborate fortress and I was pretty confident that I could win. But I didn’t. Naturally. I was devastated. But then I saw what the winners made and I was like Oh. The "Fire Lion" set was something I quite literally begged my mother for as a child. My face on the day I finally got it... What will my kids be begging me for?
I actually miss those Technic Star Wars sets. I always preferred Lego when they went for “how can we work with what we already have” instead of “what new molds can we make for pieces”. That’s also why I prefer the classic Lego Star Wars that is less accurate over the highly detailed minifigs of today
Say what you will about Chima in terms of just the show. It’s nothing incredible to ride home about in terms of story and characters arcs, something Ninjago has proven superior in. And I think it’s safe to say that the developers made Chima BEFORE people demanded Ninjago back after the Final Battle, since those same developers worked on Ninjago. But in terms of the sets, specifically a large portion of the vehicles and bases for the tribes, I don’t care what anyone says - a lot of them spectacularly designed. Eris’ Eagle Interceptor, Worriz;s Combat Lair, and especially Crater’s Command Ship are amazing (the ship actually floats in the water). The concept was intriguing, it just left a lot more to be desired to get people interested in it as much as Ninjago.
@@muellmanni1678 yeah the hate stems from the show and ninjago cause when chima hit the shelves ninjago fans did all they could to stop chima and well the show wasn't that good Ninjago is truly the most toxic community in lego
Ok, major correction: Chima wasn't canceled because it was terrible (its sales weren't spectacular, but they were passable), it was canceled because at the time LEGO planned on having 3-year run "big bang" themes. They didn't expect that Ninjago would take off like it did, and planned Chima as its replacement. Part of the issue with Constraction figures was that the system was originally designed for Bionicle, and thus catered to that specific "bio-mechanical" aesthetic. Trying to make fully organic characters using that system was just not advisable, but LEGO themselves tried it anyway. Even for a 4+ theme, Jack Stone was pretty terrible. But I can't entirely blame the designers because the theme was LEGO's first attempt at a half-way point between System and Duplo. Still, 4+ designs had a long way to go before the relatively well-done (for a 4+ theme) Juniors Pirates series. LEGO Ben 10 was again an abuse of the Constraction system. Galidor... oh god... Granted, I feel people give this theme too much shit, using it as a scapegoat to claim that their favorite theme didn't contribute to LEGO's near-bankruptcy, when in reality it was the fact that LEGO had too many loss leaders among their various lines, with features that were more expensive to implement than what the set cost. Every set with motor functions or fiber optics was part of the problem, for one thing. But Galidor didn't help, seeing as it introduced a large number of specialized molds on top of the already excessive number LEGO had, all of which cost tens of thousands to make due to tooling costs. Technic Star Wars figures were just... _why?_
