    This was very interesting but I did notice you didn’t answer the question of if a woman can work in the shops and a man can work in the bakery or kitchen. I’m guessing by omission the answer is no.

      Oh boy I totally forgot...
      Male and female roles are clearly defined on most if not all Hutterite colonies. And perhaps it's being born into this environment that sets the stage for teenage years if you will. However, we have had female students choose electrical or carpentry courses over home economics courses, but I've never run across a Hutterite male wanting to take home economics or cooking courses although some of our men do love to cook and are very good at it. I guess the long and short of it is that it would depend on the colony or individual.

      @@gisellewaldner9406 How is nurturing one's intellect going to lead to pride (comment below)? If a man lifts a car off a child, would you not let him because it might lead to him then being prideful? I doubt it, I believe you would honor the man's strength and be very grateful that he saved a child's life. A nurtured intellect might one day save your child and quite possibly millions of children. Sad that the responses below are so rigid.

      @@InvisibleVisible793 Hutterite colonies aren't prisons, you know. If a Hutterite person prefers to live in the world, that option is open to them. I certainly understand why the world isn't welcome to take over the colonies, however.

    Your school experience is very different from the colonies where I have taught for 5 years. I live in Alberta, and the students do not complete to grade 12, or have the chance to go to post secondary. Also, there are no computers in the local colony schools. All the English teachers are certified, and members of the ATA. They all come from off the colony.
    I loved my time at 4 different colonies. I made some very good friends, and now that I have retired, I go back to visit quite often.

    I think your education system is eviable. I learned art from an ex soldier who survived the Vietnam War and so we had to listen to that kind of music which was not good as you can well imagine. I think children have to thrive when in a Christian teaching environment. I did have an awesome home-ec teacher who was very old school and we were taught etiquette and sewing and some cooking and baking as well as cleaning. Her name was Mrs. Himby. She died before we went back for Junior yr. I'll never forget her. Mrs. Bonjour as well. Awesome teachers. Giselle- this is random, but I just wanted to tell you that I was listening to a podcast the other day. They said a study was done that having fun while doing hard work actually leads to better results. A group of doctors were given candy and asked to solve a problem. That group of doctors quickly solved the problem and more! Another group of doctors weren’t given candy spent a long time figuring out the problem while the others resolved it quickly. Not that the candy itself produced better results, but the fun it created. The point being.. having a fun, child-like (not childish but child-LIKE) approach to life is actually more productive! The reason I’m bringing this out is I see that in you! You have fun while working hard. Vlogging-while hard work I am sure- is allowing you to see the beauty in the life you have. Never allow anyone to condemn you or make you feel less than for making life and work fun your way! “Unless we become like little children we will not enter the kingdom of heaven.”

    Thanks Giselle. I still wonder how decisions are made about higher education that might be less applied and practical. I think you said that artistic education would be decided by the colony. I guess my question is: is the decision made on the basis of whether the education someone wanted to take would be useful to the colony or just to the individual? For example, you are interested in the brain and, I think, psychology. Could you study to become a psychologist? What if you just wanted to know more about psychology without becoming a clinician?

    You skated right over the gender reversal issue. That's OK. I can understand how difficult of an issue it must be for you. I suppose that's yet another reason why some people chose to leave. For those of you who stay, it seems like a wonderful way to live, and I honestly envy you for it. As long as you aren't cruel to those who wish to live different lifestyles, I see no problem. Trying to make a community perfect for everyone is a fools errand.

      I live in the Red River Valley of Manitoba and do business with at least 7 different Hutterite colonies. Gender roles are well defined without deviation. Women perform domestic duties and men do the rest. Most women do not drive and never obtain a driver’s license. It is common for women on farms in Manitoba to participate in every aspect of farming including operating farm machinery but Hutterite women typically do not. Hutterites will cite biblical reasons for this division of labor. In reality they have a large enough population to operate with distinct divisions of labor whereas others must take advantage a much smaller labor force as generalists, regardless of gender.

    Wonderful video, very informative. I was surprised to learn that your school provides education through grade 12. I thought I had seen in an early video where children went to school until age 15. I know some people will assume that children don’t learn as much when they attend a small school but in some cases it’s just the opposite. I’m an old lady (77 years old) and my first five years of school was in a one room school with one teacher and eight grades. Instead of learning less because the teacher had to teach eight grades I learned more since I wasn’t held back by other children my age. Do you know what percentage of children in your colony graduate high school? Thank you.

      You can teach evolution theory and tell children it's a theory and an option but that their school or colony feels the truth is in the bible.
      That's what I was taught in school in the 70's and 80's too.

    If the objective of the vlog is educating about the Hutterites way of life, you should answer all the questions and in full. For example Q16 - your answer was: "leaders are voted into their positions" but you did not mention that ONLY the MEN are voting for the colony leadership positions such as the colony Manager or Minister .... Q26 - are boys can learn cooking or sewing - no response because the answer is most probably NO and the same is if a girl would like to work in the shop (i.e. as an electrician or plumber) - no response because I assume the answer is NO. So please, in the future give complete and accurate information or don't show questions that you are not interested to answer....

      google amish baskets hutterites-vs-amish they have a great blog about the differences and similarities, both groups have a patriarchal belief system, women cannot vote on such matters. Most jobs are very gender specific but never say never, as the needs of the community always come first before individual pursuits, so if a colony needed a woman to do traditional male role job, she would probably be assigned to that job. The mix of males and females on the colonies means that most jobs can remain gender specific. While that seems restrictive to us, people choose to live their lives on the colonies of their own free will as adults, so it seems to work for them. There are so many ways to live and I find it so interesting to learn even if that lifestyle is not for me.

    Personally, with the way the public schools are going these days, I would think that it would be a good idea for the hutterites to not use the public school's curriculum. I live in a very woke state and I feel like I have to pay for my kids to attend private Christian/Catholic schools because of the Woke ideology. Wokism is a threat to Christian morals and the Hutterite way of life because it is antichristian in its roots. I know I don't want my kindergarten and first grade students to be learning about gender theory. I would like to think that the Hutterites wouldn't either.

      Wasn’t Gregor Mendel the founder of the modern genetics? And didn’t that happen in the 19th century?

    • @megangreene3955
      @megangreene3955 6 місяців тому +2

      @@f2karin I don't know about that, but I do know that they were not teaching about many different genders in public schools in the nineteenth or twentieth centuries. I am a product of the California public schools from 1985-1998 + three years of junior college. It was not until my required gender studies class in junior college that I was subjected to gender theory. So, no, they were not teaching students about "preferred pronouns" , LGBTQIA+ studies, or anything of that nature in public schools in the 19th century. The readers from that time period (I own an entire set of them) are mildly Christian in nature. They have some stories that are overtly religious. Public schools did not outlaw school prayer until 1962. So, every morning, school would start with a Protestant hymn and the Lord's prayer. Girls wore dresses and pinafores to school and boys wore trousers and button down shirts. There was no mention of cross dressing or transgender. Girls were forbidden to play with the boys at recess and boys could not go to the girls' side of the playground. So, no, it doesn't matter that some dead dudes like Alfred Kinsley and others thought up these theories because it wasn't until the 21st century that such theories were being actively taught and promoted in the public schools.. and even more recently that this trickled down into the primary schools.
      The Catholic objections to public schools in the 19th and early 20th Centuries was not that they were teaching things like gender theory and other subjects which violate the fifth , sixth and ninth Commandments of God. However , it was because they were trying to turn Catholic children into Protestants with their daily Protestant Bible study, their school prayers, and the readers which were, in the beginning of the mandatory schooling, overtly Protestant. Later , in the middle of the 20th century, it was because the public schools were teaching a form of religious indifferentism. So, Catholics set up their own schools to teach Catholic faith and morals to schoolchildren. They allowed Protestant children to attend on a limited basis (when there was space available) and exempted them from the religious education portion of the curriculum. This remained true until the late 1960's when Catholic schools started resembling Protestant Christian schools or even public schools from the mid half of the 20th century.
      I pay for my kids to go to the Catholic school because they still speak about sex only from a biology perspective in 8th grade and do not touch on sex or sexualities or gender fluidity in the primary school level.
      Your comment led me down a rabbit hole. I found out who Fr. Abbot Gregor Mendel was. His work was concentrated around plants and the different genomes of plant species found in his monastery. Fr. Abbot Mendel was a Catholic Augustinian friar had absolutely nothing to do with LGBTQIA studies or with woke ideology. What's more, all of his scientific papers would have been read and possibly censored by his ecclesiastical superiors within the Augustinian order. So, you can be assured that if his work passed the censors, that it was free from anything that would contradict the moral and doctrinal teaching of the Catholic Church. Furthermore, his works would have been studied at the collegiate and graduate school level and not the public or private primary and secondary school levels.

      But isn’t wokism against any discrimination? And to know about discrimination you need to be aware about minorities. Isn’t it to learn empathy and equality? We did so very wrong things in the past even Catholic institutions did. There is many evil stuff in the Bible tho. And the sexuality isn’t told in school it isn’t inherited it’s not even a choice it ain’t a sickness it is given by nature. You can say it is a challenge but you can not vanish it. Of course I am not happy about to get to know that my child was learning about the sexual organs in elementary school and about sexual abuse… We have learned both the evolution theory in biology and the creation theory in religion class. In the ninth grade you can choose between ethics and religion. My kid has chosen ethics a downer for me cause I was raised in an Ecumenist household dad is catholic and mom lutheran. We was raised lutheran but we know also the catholic rituals. So for an European the issues with the curriculum is a forgein topic cause the curriculum is written in the law. If students fail the exams cause their teachers choose to get off the curriculum then it’s the principals fault. In Austria you have the right to homeschool but your child needs to go to the school to get an externist exam about the whole year in every subject. I don’t know what is threatening more, the knowledge about a minority or bad grades.

    • @megangreene3955
      @megangreene3955 6 місяців тому

      @@f2karin First off, as an American, we have the right to choose to educate our children according to our religious beliefs. Wokism is not about respecting all races, but about teaching a hatred for people who are of European ancestry based on the fact that some Europeans chose to enslave others. It is about making white people make "reparations" for the crimes of their ancestors even though they themselves have had absolutely no part in enslaving anyone or in segregation. This hatred is a direct violation of the fifth commandment which forbids all, anger, hatred, revenge, murder and bad example. It also discriminates against Christians by calling the Holy Bible hate speech and by saying that Christian beliefs are extremist and violent. This is despite the fact that violent behaviour is definitely prohibited by the fifth commandment. It is because we believe that God made two sexes and not a plethora of gender identities and that marriage is between one man and one woman.
      The Catholic Church did not do anything wrong by trying to stamp out heresy and to drive the Muslims back who were kidnapping Christians, selling them into slavery, and r£ping their wives. They did not do anything wrong with obeying the biblical mandate to go out to all nations and preach the Faith, baptising them in the name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Ghost.
      Wokism is also about forcing children to learn about graphic depictions of gay sex even as young as primary school. It has nothing to do with preventing sexual abuse. It has everything to do with celebrating the homosexual identity and forcing it on four, five and six year old children on up . The belief is that children, even at the youngest grades in school, are inherently sexual beings and capable of consent. That is absolutely not what Christian morals teach us. The 10 commandments and the new Testament teach us that anyone who looks at another to lust for them has already committed adultery with her (him) in his heart. The sixth commandment forbids all immodesty with ourselves or others and reading bad or immodest books and newspapers (or websites). The ninth Commandment forbids all impure thoughts and desires for anyone who is not your spouse. Therefore, showing a small child a picture book about the gay pride parade and men in BDSM fetish gear offends against both commandments. Having older children read books with extremely graphic gay sex scenes does not help them, but hurts their moral development. It also violates the parents rights to teach their children their faith.
      The basic curriculum should be English language arts and English grammar, maths, sciences, and history. It should not include any references to political agendas. It should not include LGBTQIA studies at the youngest grade levels, and it should not put parents in a position where they are being lied to by the children's teachers and school principal because little Johnny changes into a dress and goes by Vanessa as soon as he gets to school while the school covers up the fact that he thinks that he's a girl in the wrong body. They also cover up the fact that female students have been sexually assaulted in the girls toilets by males who claim to be transgender.
      I do not homeschool. I pay to send my kids to Catholic school. At that school, children are taught reading, writing, English grammar, maths, science, music, history and Spanish. As well as Christian doctrine. There are both public and private schools in the United States and Canada. Private schools are allowed to teach their students according to their church's religious beliefs. Public schools outlawed any form of school prayer, religious instruction of any kind, and ethics class as well. Students are forbidden to read the Bible on school property, to say a silent grace before meals, or engage in religious discussions. Teachers have been sacked for displaying Christian images, speaking about the Christian origins of Valentine's day, or taking a knee after a football match, Or for expressing their religious beliefs on their private Facebook page. So, I chose to pay for schools that I know will not be reading books that offend against Christian modesty and have pictures of sexual fetish gear that are written for very young children.
      I have absolutely no problem with biology. I am not opposed to my 8th graders learning about human anatomy, where babies come from, and what happens during puberty. I am opposed to my six and seven year olds looking at gay pride picture books and learning about "preferred pronouns" and gender fluidity. Those things have absolutely nothing to do with biology or preventing sexual abuse. Kids can learn stranger danger from their parents. They can also learn right from wrong. I am teaching my little kids about the 10 commandments, the traditional Catholic Baltimore Catechism, and tutoring them in reading after school. I am not their main teacher anymore, but I am there to impart our family's religious beliefs and to help them with the subjects they need extra help in.
