Hey there, Opeth fans! "Ghost of Perdition" is coming soon. You all really undersold this "growl" thing. I mean, I don't think there IS a word for what this guy can do. But a huge thanks for introducing me to this band. Looking forward to hearing more from them. :)
Yeah this song is from the era where Opeth were still doing progressive death metal, however this record was mellow break from it (it was meant to be a double album Deliverance and Damnation but the record label made them publish it separately). Nowadays Opeth do rock progressive, It's one of those band that never do a bad song.
This is from their "clean" record in the middle of their progressive Death metal phase. Although the death metal may seem off-putting, songs like Harlequin Forest, Ghost of Perdition, Hessian Peel, etc. Have plenty of clean vocals along with his Miakel's growls and are arguably more beautiful than the purely clean stuff.
I'm really glad you enjoyed this song. It's one my personal favorites. Most of their other work has growling vocals which is surprising since it is the same singer.
@@MusicCatsandCoffee Yes and No. Amazing like Corey in the ability to sing in multiple styles. But his growling isn't Angry Corey. It's a little scarier than Demonic Corey, lol.
@@victorlojero8318 a little? There is a tiny amount of singers that can have something on Mikael’s growls in Ghost Of Perdition, Master’s Apprentices or The Moor, and Corey is definitely not one of them through he is good
great band... totally been a constant in the genre, barley under the radar in mainstream throughout their career . I think they like to be just under the surface
Soft Opeth - Harvest, Burden, Windowpane Heavy Opeth - Blackwater Park, Heir Apparent Soft and Heavy Opeth - Harlequin Forest, Bleak, Ghost of Perdition - start here
So, if nobody has said it yet, Mikael never really learned to read music, and so he wrote this stuff by sound/feel. There's a lot more than just minor chords going on when you get into opeth, as they have a pretty unique approach to harmony. They use lots of interesting chord voicings (think, playing the notes of a chord in different arrangements, like taking the c in a c chord and playing it an octave up or down), interesting choices of bass notes played under the main chords, use of diminished chords (diminished doesn't sound like it wants to go anywhere, but still sounds unstable. Often associated with sounding creepy). They are by no means the most out there in terms of music theory complexity, but they have a very interesting approach. They also make great use of silence, and space in their arrangements.
This was the first Opeth song mentioned in the comment section of any of my videos. BUT because of this, Ghost of Perdition was a shock to the system, to say the least. I'll be posting that one next week. :)
I was gonna say that, too. Hell, I didn't even remember that song :( Kind of a deep cut, but still a great song. You can hardly go wrong with Opeth, it's all great and all so different.
It sounds very reminiscent of Porcupine Tree, I could hear it from just listening to the song, but checking on wikipedia real quick confirms not only did Steven Wilson produce this album he actually wrote the lyrics to this song, and honestly I wouldn’t be surprised if he played the solo at the end too. If you like it then I would recommend Porcupine Tree for sure.
I just found your channel and I’m really enjoying your videos so far and look forward to more! Subscribed! As for Opeth I think you will really enjoy a lot of their songs! Windowpane, the first track on this same album is my recommendation
This is one of several collaborations Opeth/Mikael did with Steven Wilson. If you don't know that name, don't worry, a lot of people don't, but I would recommend checking out his solo work and the band Porcupine Tree.
Opeth - Burden This is a must. Then may be you can listen The Drapery Falls. Great combination of cleans and growls. Also one more song from their latest album, 'Lovelorn Crime' from In Cauda Venenum.
Hey, I saw you mentioned changing chords from major to minor etc. Try the song Burden by Opeth, a wonderful song which utilizes this technique of changing to parallelle chords
I loved when you were breaking down the lyrics and you said “I don’t wanna get dark here”. I mean, it only seems to be about someone kidnapping children and burying them alive in the woods, and in the first verse their fathers are returning from their search unable to find them, yeah nothing dark here lol
It's hard to go wrong with Opeth, but since you are coming from Slipknot, I could recommend some of their heavier stuff. Blackwater Park, Deliverance or My Arms Your Hearse would be good options :)
Whoever recommended this, thank you! I'm a lifelong Opeth fan (okay since 2003) and I get tired of Ghost of Perdition always being reacted to. More clean Opeth!
Opeth top 5 band in my life. Swedish band. They can be super heavy and progressive and complex and on the other hand super sweet and beautiful and delicate. Wonderful group. The opposite from them for example would be a song like Bleak. Heavy. Growling vocals. Its shocking listening to the complexity of this guys range.
Lot of good Opeth songs already have been recommended, but I’ll add Master’s Apprentices, The Moor, Demon of the Fall. I’ll also recommend Wintersun Sons of Winter and Stars, Time, or Land of Snow and Sorrow. Liver rehearsals at sonic pump studios are good quality videos of those songs.
I’ll add Faith in Others and River off Opeth’s pale communion album. Also Porcupine Tree is another band worth reacting to. Steve Wilson of Porcupine Tree has produced several Opeth albums and you can hear some influences back and forth.
ive already suggested one song from Starset with Frequency which i cant wait to see your reaction to it i would like to suggest another one of their songs called Bringing it down. they're one of my fav bands Top 5 actually up there with Slipknot. just so u know Starset is a space rock band the singer name is Dustin
Hey, just a heads-up. If I get the same message from the same person, I am far less likely to take the song into consideration. I have over 125 song suggestions right now. I appreciate your passion, but rest assured, I got it the first time. :)
LOL. Well, hello. Going in blind is part of the fun of it. Sorry if that goes against your reactor criteria. To my knowledge, never said I was proud. I like pushing play with absolutely no expectations. Have a great day. :)

He is a god.
Opeth is really super scary stuff 😂, at least their first 8 albums, you should check out The Moor by Opeth
Got it, thanks! :)
Try Ghost of Perdition by them. Absolute destruction and beauty at the same song. Masterpiece!!
Got it, thanks! :)
Hours of wealth from Opeth's Ghost Reveries!. Amazing calm song with superb vocals from Mikael. Nice reaction!.
Got it, thanks! :)
Great reaction! That is a mellow song from them. Let's go for the big hits!!
Opeth - Ghost of Perdition has it all what Opeth is!
Got it, thanks! :)

Oh! This song glides so well into the next one, that up until now, I thought they were the same. Feels very weird stopping there

Kind of like a Corey Taylor situation? :)

Now that I've heard this growl, it's a LITTLE scarier than Demonic Corey? Oh my. I thought I was in Hell itself. :D
if you really like that maybe "Moon Above Sun Below" is the right choice
Got it, thanks! :)
Soft Opeth - Harvest, Burden, Windowpane
Heavy Opeth - Blackwater Park, Heir Apparent
Soft and Heavy Opeth - Harlequin Forest, Bleak, Ghost of Perdition - start here
Add The Drapery Falls to soft and heavy section, and The Grand Conjuration, The Funeral Portrait, The demon Of The Fall in the heavy section.
I will look forward to more Opeth reactions :) It would be fun to see you explore the other side of Opeth
Stay tuned!
I can only hope that death sounds so fucking awesome when he comes to finally visit me...hopefully a long time from now.
Hey I found a random person on youtube reacting to one of my favorite bands 🥰🎶🤟
folklore please
me love you long time 😋
I don't see that one recommended much. The whole album is super underrated. One of my favorite albums.
Got it, thanks! :)
Opeth's Ghost of Perdition or Harlequin Forest would be 2 good ones with a nice mix of heavy and light
Got it, thanks! :)

The Black Plague comes to mind with this song
Probably the most unusual first Opeth song ever, love it though!

Opeth - In Mist She was Standing \m/ early Opeth is the best
On the list, thanks! :)
Forests of October is also an epic track from Orchid
Also The Apostle of Triumph & Twilight is my robe

My favorite album by Opeth 💚
Do they have albums that AREN'T concept albums?
@@jettrainbowovertly, yes.. everything except MAYH & Still Life
"Opeth - Deliverance" is one of their best songs, i would recommend the remixed version from 2015: v=_PMPj5Smfy8

Greatest band of all time, imo.

You'll never guess what song reaction I filmed today! HAHA! :)
@@MusicCatsandCoffee 😂 Eating my words right now! I look forward to watching. Classic song
Den Standiga Resan is a great mellow song from Opeth. It's sung in Swedish and is Hauntingly Beautiful. Give it a listen. Also the song Pyre. 👍👍
