In any case I grew a thick skin and calloused knuckles having to walk home past the public elementary schools. However, if you were working in the Italian area of Toronto, I think there may be more bigotry with workers. I think that's why many thrive in construction/general labour jobs ... or night jobs cleaning when they dont have to be around people. Just a couple thoughts (based on generalizations of course).
No way. The only fear employers back then might have had is that some Portugese working in Canada were illegal immigrants. They could have been afraid their business might get raided, fined or shut down by the Feds. But beyond documentation, what could anyone possibly have against Portugese.
