In Polish there is a phrase "moja duszko" which means "my soul / my little soul" - today it is old-fashioned and sounds vintage, but I think it is beautiful. :) I believe someone in today's live chat mentioned some similar word in another European language, it was Croatian if I remember correctly. :) I love to find similarities between different cultures! We all do have many things in common. :) Also, I am very impressed by your translations of folk songs, yet, I don't know what's the magic behind it: when you sing Hungarian originals it moves me much more than English versions. So I dont know how exactly I got to your channel, but I am thrilled to hear about Hungarian things. My great grandma came over from Hungary with my grandpa during a certain window of time around WWII. However, neither of them shared a whole lot about their life there or our family history.
It's so odd to hear these melodies in English - it's something that doesn't sound at all weird in our regional languages (Romanian and Hungarian in this case), but it's like listening to an Irish folk song in French - beautiful yet confusing.
I love your folkloric singing you have such a wonderful voice when you sing, I enjoy hearing how it would legitimately sound sung in its native language!
Oh, I learnt 'Hol háltál az éjjel, cinegemadár?' a bit differently, both the lyrics and the tune. It is nice to hear another version of it. :) Also, galambom was the first one that came to my mind when I saw the video's title.
Lovely video! In old finnish folk songs there are "heila", "heili" and "hellu" which simply mean the person you are dating. There is also "lemmitty" which means the person you love or make love with. It comes from the word "lempi" which means love, fondness and sexual tension as an magic power. Another pet name is "mielitietty" which can be translated as favourite one or just a sweetheart. I also love the word lover ("rakastaja") because I think that love is more important than social relations. And by social relations I mean that words spouse, girl-/boyfriend, wife, husband etc. tell the listener how society sees the couple but doesn't really stress enough the feelings between them.
A very good point you make! I'm 40, my "boyfriend" is 51. Now it seems awfully strange to call him my "boyfriend" he is definitely more than a boy!! I don't like "partner", "significant other", etc etc for exactly the reason you say, it doesn't convey enough of the feeling and emotion that we share in that relationship. Well put, thank you 🥰

Hungarian language is one of those things to me, it is so familiar but yet so foreign. As a romanian living in Transylvania, I am accustomed to hearing it spoken or sung but I don't understand one bit of it. And as a lover of languages it frustrates me that it's so hard to learn this language since we have such a history together... I like seeing you create this content that shows your cultural background and it makes me wonder if I will ever be comfortable with showing more of my cultural background online... @@PrettyShepherd Oh as I child I didn't register any problem. When I lived on the countryside (5-6 yo) my best friend was a romani girl and we didn't need words to play. Me and my partner were house-hunting before the pandemic and we were really attracted to the Harghita/ Covasna areas where many many people speak Hungarian. Both of us also love languages so we got excited thinking that if we move to one of those areas, it would be the perfect excuse to learn Hungarian. Only that, in lockdown we googled some hungarian for beginners books/ classes and got really discouraged haha. The many unusual letters and sounds, the structure of the phrase... it all seems so daunting. My partner is very interested in history, she is now obsessed with the History of Transylvania and the Austro Hungarian empire and it was always one of her big regrets that she wan't introduced to Hungarian language as a child growing up in Cluj, so because of this, she can't access certain resources because she doesn't understand the language. Sorry that was long :)

Not sure gonna find pet names, because portugueses usually hide who is the subject of their affection in their folk songs..! 😅 One word that I do remember is "trigueirinha", it's in a diminutive form, which indicates tenderness, to refer a woman with a tan, darker skin color. Literally means "little wheat". My husband calls me avelã = hazelnut because I have brown hair and eyes 😆 I will keep researching !! And we definitely want a dance video this year, Anna! Think about it! ♥️
I loved hearing both versions! I can understand some Hungarian still but I've lost a lot of it over the years (hard to practice when you can only talk to yourself, haha). Having both versions helps to fill in the gaps and made sharing it with my husband fun! My grandmother was Mexican and often called me Mija/Mijita, which literally means daughter/little daughter. But she would also call me ceilita mía (which translates to "my little sky" but is closer to "darling/sweetheart" in English. I know it originates from a Mexican folklore song called "Cielito Lindo" which means "beautiful little sky" but is meant similarly to ceilita mía.). The first stanza goes: De la Sierra Morena, Cielito lindo, vienen bajando, Un par de ojitos negros, Cielito lindo, de contrabando. (From the Sierra Morena, Little darling, is prancing down A pair of little black eyes, Sweet little darling, is sneaking by.)

A few come to mind in Lombard (regional language of Italy): la mia spusa (my wife), la miã bela (my beautiful one), la miã inamurada (the one I'm in love with and she loves me back). In Standard Italian we also have "il mio amato" (my loved one), "bambolina" (little doll) and tesoro (treasure), though the latter is still widely used. Often couples have their own pet names, too. My gf and I use "topolina" and "patatona" meaning "little mouse" and "big potato" 🙈
Thank you, dear Anna! This was lovely as usual. In the southern US, we often call our sweetheart our, "Shuga Buga." Which is really strange. It's meant in an endearing way. It can be used for a child or friend as well. It comes from Sugar Booger, which is just awful. Lol But it is pronounced in a more casual, rhyming way.
My favourite vintage-y one is tricky to use as a name, but easy to give as a compliment, and that "You're the cat's pajamas!" and my father uses "my Dove" for my mother, and "my little dove" or "Dovey Darling" for me. I'm also very fond of "Mi Gordita" which is apparently a Spanish pet name that means something like "my fatty" or possibly "my little fatty" (depending on who you ask, Chileans, Brazilians and Spanish people have all told me slightly different versions/translations) which I LOVE as a pet name!

Aww I love this! One pet name in Ojibwemowin (the language of a North American tribe around Lake Superior, the Ojibwe or Anishinaabe) is niinimoshenh or niinimoosh. It is often translated as my sweetheart, but it more literally means my cross-cousin. Cross-cousins are first cousins whose parents (the ones who are siblings) are opposite gender, your mother’s brother’s child or your father’s sister’s child. Traditionally this cross-cousin would be of a different clan, and therefore marriageable. (Parallel cousins, when the parents-who-are-siblings are the same gender, are more like a sibling and cannot be married even if they are different clans - your father’s brother’s child, or your mother’s sister’s child. The names for these cousins are much more complicated, referring to the gender of each person and even whether they’re older or younger than you!) Also, I love the flower names! I collect Ojibwemowin plant names, and I love learning about folk names for plants in any language.
I love the practice of calling someone “lover” I had a great aunt, one of my favorite people, who would often greet people with the phrase, “Hello lover!”

My favorite pet name I learned in the Czech Republic: malý broučku (broach-koo). Literally it means little beetle, but it definitely is like a gender neutral "my little ladybug". Also, before I clicked on it, I totally thought this was a video about what to name your dog or cat. XD

How about bogaram (my bug) or csillagom (my star) in Hungarian? Sometimes they are used by parents or grandparents for their children. And in Serbian: pile moje (my little chick) pače moje (my duckling), dušo (my soul), sokole (falcon - for men), zumbule (hyacinth - usually for men), zlato moje (my gold), mila moja/mili moj (my sweet).

Anyway in Italy we have a lot of terms to refer to our beloved ones. Most of them are picked from local dialects, such as "moroso" in northern Italy, which is a sort of a shorter way to say "amoroso", a rather old fashioned word that means "person who loves". They often use this second word "amoroso" ("amorosa" for a woman) in centre Italy, particularly Tuscany (where ancient words are quite often used in everyday speaking), to say boyfriend/girlfriend or sometimes just a very nice and dear person. There are also so many other words to say boyfriend/girlfriend in different dialects such as zito/a or cummari (Sicily and southern Italy), fancello/a (Sardinia), toso/a (northern Italy), spuso/a (centre Italy) and so many more! ! Not sure gonna find pet names, because portugueses usually hide who is the subject of their affection in their folk songs..! 😅 One word that I do remember is "trigueirinha", it's in a diminutive form, which indicates tenderness, to refer a woman with a tan, darker skin color. Literally means "little wheat". My husband calls me avelã = hazelnut because I have brown hair and eyes 😆 I will keep researching !! And we definitely want a dance video this year, Anna! Think about it! ♥️

I loved hearing both versions! I can understand some Hungarian still but I've lost a lot of it over the years (hard to practice when you can only talk to yourself, haha). Having both versions helps to fill in the gaps and made sharing it with my husband fun!
My grandmother was Mexican and often called me Mija/Mijita, which literally means daughter/little daughter. But she would also call me ceilita mía (which translates to "my little sky" but is closer to "darling/sweetheart" in English. I know it originates from a Mexican folklore song called "Cielito Lindo" which means "beautiful little sky" but is meant similarly to ceilita mía.).
The first stanza goes:
De la Sierra Morena,
Cielito lindo, vienen bajando,
Un par de ojitos negros,
Cielito lindo, de contrabando.

My favorite "vintagey" pet name from my country is sugar cube or pumpkin. Pumpkin isn't a romantic one (infact it's mostly used for kids) but it is still very cute.

I love love love the translations. I grew up in Canada and my favorite songs (and the only way I ever successfully learned a different language) were sung in english and then in french. A few come to mind in Lombard (regional language of Italy): la mia spusa (my wife), la miã bela (my beautiful one), la miã inamurada (the one I'm in love with and she loves me back).
In Standard Italian we also have "il mio amato" (my loved one), "bambolina" (little doll) and tesoro (treasure), though the latter is still widely used.
Often couples have their own pet names, too. My gf and I use "topolina" and "patatona" meaning "little mouse" and "big potato" 🙈

Thank you, dear Anna! This was lovely as usual. In the southern US, we often call our sweetheart our, "Shuga Buga." Which is really strange. It's meant in an endearing way. It can be used for a child or friend as well. It comes from Sugar Booger, which is just awful. Lol But it is pronounced in a more casual, rhyming way.
My favourite vintage-y one is tricky to use as a name, but easy to give as a compliment, and that "You're the cat's pajamas!" and my father uses "my Dove" for my mother, and "my little dove" or "Dovey Darling" for me. I'm also very fond of "Mi Gordita" which is apparently a Spanish pet name that means something like "my fatty" or possibly "my little fatty" (depending on who you ask, Chileans, Brazilians and Spanish people have all told me slightly different versions/translations) which I LOVE as a pet name!

Aww I love this! One pet name in Ojibwemowin (the language of a North American tribe around Lake Superior, the Ojibwe or Anishinaabe) is niinimoshenh or niinimoosh. It is often translated as my sweetheart, but it more literally means my cross-cousin. Cross-cousins are first cousins whose parents (the ones who are siblings) are opposite gender, your mother’s brother’s child or your father’s sister’s child. Traditionally this cross-cousin would be of a different clan, and therefore marriageable. (Parallel cousins, when the parents-who-are-siblings are the same gender, are more like a sibling and cannot be married even if they are different clans - your father’s brother’s child, or your mother’s sister’s child. The names for these cousins are much more complicated, referring to the gender of each person and even whether they’re older or younger than you!) Also, I love the flower names! I collect Ojibwemowin plant names, and I love learning about folk names for plants in any language.

For the petnames, I really love the lily of the valley one, it's just so pretty !! My favorite petname in Spanish must be "mi vida", "my life", it's so simple and yet so demonstrative, I just love it. It's not limited to lovers, you can call your children or a very (very) close friend "mi vida" too

My favorite pet name I learned in the Czech Republic: malý broučku (broach-koo). Literally it means little beetle, but it definitely is like a gender neutral "my little ladybug".

How about bogaram (my bug) or csillagom (my star) in Hungarian? Sometimes they are used by parents or grandparents for their children. And in Serbian: pile moje (my little chick) pače moje (my duckling), dušo (my soul), sokole (falcon - for men), zumbule (hyacinth - usually for men), zlato moje (my gold), mila moja/mili moj (my sweet).

I liked hearing the English translation along side the original version. As an English speaker I was able to hear more of the emotion in the words when hearing it in my native language.

Anyway in Italy we have a lot of terms to refer to our beloved ones. Most of them are picked from local dialects, such as "moroso" in northern Italy, which is a sort of a shorter way to say "amoroso", a rather old fashioned word that means "person who loves". They often use this second word "amoroso" ("amorosa" for a woman) in centre Italy, particularly Tuscany (where ancient words are quite often used in everyday speaking), to say boyfriend/girlfriend or sometimes just a very nice and dear person. There are also so many other words to say boyfriend/girlfriend in different dialects such as zito/a or cummari (Sicily and southern Italy), fancello/a (Sardinia), toso/a (northern Italy), spuso/a (centre Italy) and so many more! !
