  • Advertising: the rattling of a stick in a swill-bucket? Welcome to the show where the stick rattles back: The Hard Sell. Adverts from history, treated with the respect they deserve.
This episode: Movie Premieres on ITV are Brought To You by humdrum on-set vignettes, genetically engineered adorable couples, mad goldfish, moustachioed twats and, most memorably, nightmarish mockeries of movie stars talking absolute bollocks with their mouths full of corn starch. Return to a time when Doritos came in beef flavour for reasons beyond the realm of normal human understanding.

I think the oldest vhs recording i still have (somewhere at my parents) is an itv/ytv recording of enter the dragon from about 1990 or 1991. I do remember it having the 89 generic ident. Ill dig it out and share it one day

Didn't ITV have a Quality Street sponsor at one point? Remember Goldeneye had it. With the classic line from the exorcist replaced with 'You're mother sucks toffee fingers in hell'. I had no context to that at the time and it just confused me.

Probably a Christmas season sponsorship or something.

Didn't the goldeneye premiere have the goldfish quoting random movies too?

@@whatamalike I have a VHS with the recording with the Quality Street sponsor. Not sure if it's premiere. Guessing shown around 97/98 cause I remember playing the game at the same time

Oh yes I was going to ask. They referenced at least Jaws, James Bond and Alien.

Motorola are still going. I have a Motorola smartphone. It boots up with HELLOMOTO, and yes it's absolutely fucking annoying.

By far the best film sponsorship stings were Stella Artois' sponsorship of FilmFour.
As for those Clutch Cargo Doritos stings... they'd have put me off Doritos.

Agreed, the Stella Artois ones were suitably vaguely classy. I think the first Diet Coke batch was good. The Doritos ones seem like a weird extension of those First Direct ads with random objects overlaid by the logo and phone number.
Going to try and find out who voiced the Toyota goldfish.

There is scope here for another video on ITV's idents for non-premiere movies during the mid 1990s. Particularly the "Widescreen Experience, sponsored by Phillips" bumpers during that transitional period where everything was being broadcast in 1.85:1 widescreen whether it was appropriate or not. So anything in 4:3 or 2.35:1 were _still_ shown in their wrong aspect ratios!
And also I particularly love 1994's series of films focusing on female characters, the "Leading Ladies, sponsored by Lillets" strand on Saturday nights! Which was probably meant to be empowering and progressive at the time, but are rather crass now! (Though I still love my VHS recorded copy of Working Girl in that season, which rather appropriately goes from the sponsorship intro to the opening titles of the film set to the song "Let My Rivers Flow"!)

I loved the movie set idents, found the courting couple ignoring the film insipid, and *HATED* the ones with the moving mouths on pictures. So it was an inexorable descent for me through this period of ITV. And then they pretty much stopped with advertising premieres (or premieres at all) by the 2000s.

I would add that the thing that I particularly loved about the 'film set' idents from 1993 and 1994 was that in the advert breaks that came during the film after these brief live action bits, there was also a bumper screen showing the title of the film in its original logo form isolated on a black screen with just the clapper board logo in the corner. That for me (probably unintentionally on ITV's part) added an extra sense of all the films being grouped together thematically that I really loved. That continued into the 'insipid apartment couple' years but something was lost when it was just the sponsorship bit going straight into the film.

Was there any connection between the Diet Coke trailer stings with the effervescent younger couple and that ad campaign in a couple of videos on your channel with the motel and the inflatable Frankenstein?
