So, is this a facility to allow privileged white kids to play with new world monkeys?
Maybe I'm naive, but I thought these centers were for the rehabilitation of these monkeys. The policy was, I thought, to keep contact with these animals to a minimum.
These kids seem to be just wanting to play with monkeys. The last thing you want in the wild is for these monkeys to seek human contact.
I was a soldier in the Panama Canal zone, in the early '70's. Once while shooting our pistols, one of us shot a howler monkey. I thought this was despicable, and the monkeys tried to mob us, on the way back to the jeep. Throwing things from the trees, such as fruit and feces. Which I would say we thoroughly deserved it or worse. This is why I don't think the way these kids are interacting with these monkeys is proper.
Just my opinion. I know how miserably inhumane humans are and can be. I studied biology and vertebrate anatomy in college, and was a law enforcement officer. So, I’ve seen some stuff. This is why I wonder if this facility is doing these monkeys any good.

Hey there. I am super appreciative that you care about animals and their well being at the level that you do. We did look in to this group's details and how they run and after deliberation we felt good about visiting and supporting them through donations. You should google La Isla De Los Monos in Iquitos. They do a great job with saving abandoned babies and rehabilitation. A handful of these monkeys were rescued from being 'pets' in really sad circumstances. I appreciate your concern! If only everyone cared at that level and the world would probably be a better place.

I'm going here next year and unsure of whether to stay for 2 nights or just go for the day... the monkeys are my only interest really but I wouldn't mind doing other things as well. Would you recommend doing what you did?

I am so excited for you! My time at LIDLM was something I will carry with me for a long time. We stayed for two days and one night and the monkeys were my only interest too. Gilberto will probably set up some tours for you to do here and there any they are worth it. Other than visiting with the monkeys there isn't much else to do on the site, so getting out for a few hours is nice and then it's amazing coming back and having your new monkey friends recognize you and celebrate that you've returned. You will still have loads of time to spend with the monkey friends. When it came time for us to leave, we wished we had done two nights. I almost cried leaving the monkeys because they were such an amazing experience HOWEVER I was so excited to get back to a hotel in Iquitos and shower. If you're willing to allow them to, the monkeys will climb all over you and in turn you will basically at all times have a light layer of dust or dirt or mud on you because the monkeys are a bunch of crazy messy guys. I also am very prone to getting mosquito bites and I got eaten alive! Bring a TON of bug spray. Have a great trip!
