Awesome. This is really tasteful and informative. Thank you so much ! Empty mind films rules. Nobody else makes accurate, beautiful martial arts documentaries anymore. But these guys put their hearts in it. Man I love the stuff they make. The rest seem cheesy, shallow and MTV influenced.
the point is they don't teach qi theory. qi happens, but instead of searching for it, you are just feeling what happens inside you. you don't categorize it, you just explore. generally the deeper and more internal something is, the harder it is to categorize and describe in words, at least i think that's where master wang was going with that.
Qi represents the connection between the mind and body, so it is indirectly present in all arts whose goal it is to strengthen that connection. I think the narrator is implying that the concept of qi and its cultivation is not included in Yiquan's teachings.
to explain further, yiquan doesn't get caught up in talking about qi , but their qi/jin is developed much like many other internal martaial arts. i recall it said that the yin aspect of yiquan is not exoressed by most of it's people, only the very best can express this aspect too. still they sure can express the yang aspect of fajin, very well. sorry about all the typos in my other comment. i type with 2 fingers & a thumb usually lol.
Peng Si Yu who was one of Wang Xiang Zhai's students was able to do the standing meditation all night no sleeping just meditation. now that is impressive!
They have pushing hands. Tai Chi also have pushing hands. Wing Chun also have sticky hands. This kind of hand-to-hand sensitivity drill is like a trademark unique to Chinese martial arts.
yeah, of course they fight - san da/free fighting is one of the core components of Yiquan; it just didn't get across very clearly in that clip. They're even amongst the first cross trainers, incorporating other martial arts including boxing, well before it was popular. Nice video - thanks for posting.
Those punching bag we saw in Yi Chuan Clip had different purpose for training, not for speed & power practice but more like testing out issuing jing/internal strength.
I'm consider lucky to met Jimmy Hoew in M'sia though I'm consider late at 40's for picking up M.A, one need to touch their hand to understand what internal art is all about. U can feel that u r under control with the opposite "ELASTIC" strength but at the same time the force can be PENETRATIVE though u may not c thru eyes
again the focus is different but very effective the method is in strengthening Yi so much that it moves and shifts the body's complete alignment to the heart mind's will(yi)
@lordtains It's not Taijiquan b/c it's Xingyiquan when you do the movements. Yiquan actually comes directly from Xingyiquan... Zhan Zhuang is most definitely used in both Taijiquan and Xingyiquan. Yiquan is a standing point, while Xingyiquan is the parent form.
coincidentally this style is somewhat popular in japan and has some offshoots there as well. Does anyone know of another rare style that is hard to find about? it's called nature fist or natural school boxing?
I Chuan is the core of structural integrity , free flowing movement and "natural" chi cultivation..the standing makes your root really connected but your arms are soft until discharge and then KABLAM............see ya !
beginners do 70... advanced stand as long as they like, up to two hours and only then start practice testing & explosive force, pushing hands, boxing the bag, sound test and free fighting. So time becomes timeless
"In Yi Quan there is no reliance on Qi..." 1:52 INCORRECT Wang Xiangzhai developed the qi kung system, mind/intent boxing system from Hsing-I. The system is intent and qi. -and where the mind goes the qi follows.
Maybe u r misinformed, since when did Master Cui learn Sanda/M.thai ? The modern Yi Chuan during & after Yao family is they adopted the effectiveness of BOXING approached in the 30's as they are one of the few selected people to be train for olympic games in the 30's but the China team never make it. ( If i'm correct )
comentator said theri is no reliacne on qi, it's obvious he didn't realize what he was saying at the time. focus on the mind allows for qi/jin to be useful in fighting 7 fajin of course. that's why the public often has misconceptions on so many things now imho.
For MA enthusiast who never hv the chance to test out those capable Master, my suggestion is find one try him and any of them who r willing to touch u hv to be gd, only those talk but never allowed others to touch r questionable, from there u will understand what is the diff btw Internal Vs External speed & power. Cheers!
What a different way of viewing things. Controlling your mind - still somewhat a strange concept in the US. No use of chi? No fighting? (at least not yet, maybe) So, it's a form of meditation maybe, like Tai chi or Qi Gong? It might still make in the US if someone want to try and bring it over! ;)
There commentator was correct when he sd yiquan does not practice chi theory. If you read the later writings of Wang zhenzhai (founder of yiquan), you will see that. Also all of the teachings of master yao his successor. Standing everyday will only help if you study with an yiquan master. Otherwise, the door is closed.
I don't quite get it. They do Zhang zhuang, at the exact same way Taijiquan does it. They do Pushing hands or Tuisho just like Tai Chi does it and their flowing movements are roughly the same. Taijiquan also uses visualisation to make the Chi flow, as well as relaxes the body and uses natural breathing to enchance it. Where is this NOT Taijiquan?
First off, Zhang Zhuang of Taijiquan is borrowed from Yiquan ;) There are no documented proofs of this practice being popular among TJQ practitioners before the middle of XX century (unlike Push Hands or forms). Push Hands however, made its way to YQ from TJQ, as part of the idea cross-polination happening mainly in Beijing at that time. Now, the "flowing movements" is quite a vague description that can be applied to many many styles of Chinese martial arts. Atop of that, take different history of development, absence of form practice in YQ and you'll see that thinking TJQ and YQ are the same is naive and coming from being aquatinted with both styles only superficially ;)
I love and practice the internal styles. My favorite being daitoryu. But until you can make the internal come out in a split second notice you will half to rely on your novice practice. Even so called masters have a hard time using pure chi. perfect the basics to understand the secrets. Basics are the way to superioridty.
Until u'll have touch Master Cui hand else, pls reserve ur comment. I practice I Liq Chuan in M'sia & I do know what Master Cui can do. Basically he had make a life out from Yi Chuan day in day out, no doubt he is in his 60's, mind u anyone should think twice b4 try him out as his issuing force can kill, u need to touch his hand to understand what I try to tell. Be open mind,
Sanda is nothing more but a very modern variation of wushu with diluted muay thai aspects. Kyokushin Karate do fighters also studied Muay Thai and copied the techniques. Sanda is like a diluted and very young version of Muay Thai Kickboxing. There have been coaches from China who studied Muay Thai before assimilating it to Sanda and other forms of Chinese kickboxing
They don't know real YiQuan!! And even do not listen to Great Master Wang Xiang Zhai (the founder) what he wrote about!!! All Great Master Kung Fu actually ,from my point of view, was written down already in his YiQuan KungFu poem in chinese characters. Only followers do not have enough wisdom to understand what his meaning. Totally wrong standing posture. Putting hands too high will lead to muscle tight, not relax if standing one to three hours. How to dig the real things inside our body through YiQuan because you are too tired? YiQuan is not training about muscles!! It is purely on spirit. Yi is somewhat as intention, special intention, from training no thinking during standing. (it is difficult to understand, I find an English better words to explain : Stand Sleeping ). Even, Master Wang's direct student like Mr Yiu (his best one) still did not understand YiQuan totally. Why YiQuan can explore great power and energy in combat? Why Great Master Wang only shows standing posture without moving one step when he demonstate his martial art in china? Why YiQuan theory said NO hands' attacking and defending methods. (it is no any skills or style on hands movement) in combat. But, most of the called YiQuan master teach moving methods, attacking methods, styles currently. They are totally wrong and all are stupid without knowledge!!!!! Qi is just only one small part in Yi. YiQuan is a road to explore our internal basic instinct continuously. It is not about Styles, body action externally. I can tell you when great Master Wang training in standing, he can listen and see thunder and lighting. He can feel the snow and ice all over his body, the fire burning his body, and finally his body melt into empty. These are all his real power and energy come from. To Great Master Wang Xiang Zhai.
I agree. Grandmaster Wang wrote that no movement is the best training. I am old (72) and in it for health and fitness. Combat does not interest me so I practice only bad duan jin and zhan zhuang for about an hour a day. I believe that if one is relaxed and attuned then self-defense is a natural reaction. The body/mind lets itself be attacked, but is not there.
@@rpullman You understand some. The truth is about our fear. Let me tell you, Yiquan is a spiritual training by illusion. Fear is one of the elements in perceiving the truth of Martial Art, and the truth of Life. This is what you want to know.........(the body/mind lets itself be attacked),but you will be there later because I tell you right now. The deeper the silence , the deeper fear appearing inside your heart, and make use of this.
