      We use cattle panels. We have arched them over raised beds, and we have used them on the ground (standing them up by wiring them to to metal fence posts). Definitely recommend trellising for beans and peas and cucumbers. I'm going to try luffa gourds this year too. I do like the look of teepees - maybe someday!

      We are growing peas vertically. Our south fence is metal panel so they climb that. Id like to grow squash vertically at some point but we just haven’t gotten the setup yet. I like the idea of the teepee but we are in a dry climate so we have to irrigate everything or it would die. Rows and ditches for water work best for us.

      @@kathybaker1926 - My experience with the luffa this year (I'm in Iowa - Zone 5a): I planted the seeds directly in the ground in mid-May. The vines have grown profusely. I have had to cut them back several times so they don't take over the entire garden. They make a great screen, and will need a strong support. The cattle panel anchored in the ground with the metal fence posts has worked well - standing up to some gusty storms we have had this summer. We noticed that we haven't had as many blossoms as you'd think - it's like they have put all their energy into vining out. I'm not sure there is any fruit on our vines. They are so thick - it's possible there is one or two buried, but I doubt it! I have since learned that they have a really long growing season (200 frost free days). So next year, I'm going to start them indoors early and transplant - and plant less of them!

    We use cattle panels, but they are supported by regular wooden fence posts with gate hinge screws so that the panels are resting directly on the screws. That puts the bottom of the panel above the ground, making it easier to get to any weeds coming up - it also increases the usable height, although the beans usually need to be trained to "jump" the gap between the ground and the bottom of the panel.

    Enjoy your thoughts. We live in northern Alberta. We use hog panels for our peas that are hung on rebar with half of a chain link as the hook. Great for being able to reach through to pick and more rigid than chicken wire . We use the same idea for cucumbers and squash. For pole beans we took 2 x 20' rebar bent into a wide u shape and stick them into the ground. Makes a 4 legged teepee with the ridges so the beans won't slip and there's plenty of growing height. This works well for snap peas too.

    I have a few vertical setups. I have one bed along a 7 ft tall fence (bed is raised 1ft so that gives 6 feet to grow), which has tomatoes at the front and pole beans at the back, and twine attached to the fence and tomato cages for the pole beans to climb onto. The pole beans reached the top about a month after sprouting so now I'm training them horizontally. Since I'm barely a month in, I wonder how they'll look in September...
    Then there's a bed perpendicular to the fence where I put a small tree trunk in the ground at the end of the bed and connected twine between the trunk and fence so that it forms a grid the same height as the fence. I have cucumbers, pole beans and sunflowers climbing there. The pole beans are wrapping around the cucumbers and twine, so they're helping hold the cucumbers in place.
    And I also have an a-frame I built out of large branches and scrap wood and twine that I'll be using for my cantaloupes. I might get some cucamelons going up that a-frame too. Or maybe more pole beans.
    I'm also considering building a vertical structure for my Black Beauty watermelons since those are only 4-5 lbs. And maybe for my butternut squash. And maybe for a fall crop of peas. And maybe for cucamelons in another area...
    It's my first year planting a lot of these things and I'm coming to realize that pole beans grow really fast. If you're doing the 3 sisters method for example, you should probably give your corn a 1 month headstart over the pole beans, especially since the pole beans seem like they get still get started fine in the partial shade of an older corn plant and catch up soon enough. I'm not growing corn but I do have the pole beans growing up the cucumbers, tomatoes, sunflowers, and will also have some growing up on okra, so those are all kinda the same idea. Could also try the same with sorghum or amaranth. But I think with all those, you want to give the plants with thicker stems an approx 1 month headstart over the pole beans. Maybe have bush beans at the base if you want an earlier harvest of green beans, or plant an early harvest of pole beans at the base of your pea trellis (since peas will start dying off from the heat right as the pole beans take over).

    Drill holes thru 1x2s and tie with twine at top. No wire to hurt your hands. Twine thru other holes in 1x2s support your beans, cukes, etc.

    Growing black beans, red beans, green beans, sugar snap peas, and cucumbers on cattle fencing panels as trellis. We cut them in half and use them vertically to about 7 feet tall. I have done malabar spinach on a similar teepee system in the past. We have very strong winds here in Missouri, so strength is an important issue.

      Hi Julia. Your comment was very interesting as I am growing wax beans and malabar spinach for the first time this year.
      The beans are supposed to be bush beans, but they are looking leggy still. The malabar spinach is still in the starter pot.
      Do you think that six foot bamboo poles are tall enough to accommodate the beans and the spinach?
      Thank you in advance for your opinion.

    • @juliadizmang2614
      @juliadizmang2614 Рік тому

      @Anne-Marie A They will both grow as tall as your trellis, so they will get taller than the top until gravity pulls them back down. For me, 6 feet is a good height because it's hard to harvest if you use much taller.

    • @MelissaKNorris
      @MelissaKNorris  5 років тому

      You can try those, especially if you have them on hand, the beans might slip down them and if that happens, you could try tying a zip tie or maybe even some knotted twine around the poles (if they don't slip down) to give them something to hold on too.
